In Sailor Moon Cosmos, the final installment of the Sailor Moon Crystal reboot, Usagi and her friends appear to have entered an era of peace—until Mamoru Chiba, Usagi’s boyfriend, suddenly vanishes before her eyes. It turns out to be the work of Sailor Galaxia, a violent Sailor Guardian seeking to steal the Sailor Crystals from all the other Sailor Senshi. When Usagi is left without her usual allies, she finds a new one in Sailor Chibi Chibi Moon—who is later revealed to be Sailor Cosmos herself.
How Did Sailor Galaxia Rise to Power?
Defeating Sailor Galaxia will be Sailor Moon’s greatest battle yet
Sailor Galaxia was born on an unknown planet, a land torn apart by conflict and brutality. She herself was mistreated by the very people the Sailor Senshi were supposed to protect. Because of this violence, Sailor Galaxia came to despise humanity—especially her own people. One fateful day, she destroyed her home planet in mere seconds, having long viewed it and its inhabitants as worthless. She traveled across the galaxy in search of a new home worthy of her presence, but in her eyes, every planet she found was unworthy and deserved to be annihilated.
Through the words of Wiseman—an agent of Chaos itself—Sailor Galaxia eventually discovered the Sagittarius Zero Star, the home of the Galaxy Cauldron, the birthplace of stars. Alongside Chaos, Sailor Galaxia formed Shadow Galactica, a group of Sailor Guardians who either agreed to work with her in exchange for greater power or were forced to serve her out of fear. Together, they roamed the galaxy stealing Sailor Crystals and destroying even more planets. Their power grew with every innocent Sailor Senshi they killed.
Eventually, Sailor Galaxia arrived on Earth, where she stole the Golden Crystal from Mamoru Chiba as he said goodbye to Usagi Tsukino at the airport. Once the Golden Crystal was taken, Mamoru's body vanished before Usagi’s eyes. The shock of losing him caused Usagi to forget what had truly happened that day, and for a while, she believed Mamoru had left for the U.S. as planned. She encounters Sailor Galaxia again after Venus and Mars are killed for their Sailor Crystals, shortly after Mercury and Jupiter are murdered by Sailor Aluminium Siren, one of the Sailor Animamates. Sailor Galaxia even defeats the Outer Senshi, despite their efforts to stop her.
During this time, Sailor Moon meets the Sailor Starlights—a group of Sailor Guardians searching for their missing princess after their home planet was destroyed by Sailor Galaxia. Through their conversations, Usagi recalls the day she lost Mamoru and realizes it was Sailor Galaxia who took him from her. Sailor Moon and the Starlights later realize they must join forces to defeat Shadow Galactica—especially if they hope to bring back those they’ve lost.
When Does Sailor Chibi Chibi Moon Appear in Sailor Moon?
A mysterious little girl descends from the sky
As Sailor Galaxia begins her conquest of Earth, the clouds part and a beam of light shines down. A little girl descends from the sky with an umbrella, immediately searching for someone. With her powers, Chibi Chibi finds Princess Kakyuu. While the princess rests in her incense burner, Chibi Chibi uses her powers to make Usagi’s mother believe she’s her youngest daughter—a temporary way to stay hidden on Earth. At first, Chibi Chibi seems to lack her memories and appears almost like a regular child.
However, when the Sailor Starlights visit Usagi’s home later in the first half of Sailor Moon Cosmos, they briefly witness angelic wings appear on Chibi Chibi’s back. That’s when Chibi Chibi reveals she is protecting Princess Kakyuu—the lost princess the Starlights had been searching for. Later, while Usagi is at the park with Chibi Chibi, Sailor Galaxia appears in her civilian form.
In an instant, the world around them erupts into flames, and everything begins to collapse. Sailor Galaxia smiles wickedly as the planet burns, reveling in Sailor Moon’s suffering. Usagi finds herself unable to transform into Sailor Moon—but just when all seems lost, Chibi Chibi surprises everyone by using her own powers to repel Sailor Galaxia.
When Does Chibi Chibi Transform into Sailor Chibi Chibi Moon?
After that encounter, Chibi Chibi regains her memories and transforms into Sailor Chibi Chibi Moon. Alongside her, Sailor Kakyuu, and the Sailor Starlights, Sailor Moon sets off toward the Sagittarius Zero Star to face Sailor Galaxia. Their journey is long, dangerous, and full of obstacles. At the Desert River of Oblivion, they encounter Sailor Lethe and Sailor Mnemosyne—twin Sailor Guardians forced to join Shadow Galactica after their planets were destroyed by Sailor Galaxia.
Sailor Lethe nearly kills Usagi, but her sister stops her, hoping the conflict will finally end. As the two seem ready to join the heroes’ cause, both are killed by Sailor Phi—along with the Sailor Starlights. Princess Kakyuu later dies in battle against Sailor Chi and Sailor Phi—a devastating moment for the surviving heroes, including Sailor Chibi Moon.
What Is Sailor Cosmos’s True Identity?
Sailor Moon sparks hope in her future self
Sailor Chibi Chibi Moon does not fight alongside Sailor Moon when she is attacked by clones of the Inner and Outer Senshi. Instead, she urges Sailor Chibi Moon to deliver a message to Usagi: that even though this battle will be painful, she must endure. Chibi Chibi passes on the message, and through her grief, Sailor Moon gains the strength to overcome the threat. Sailor Chibi Chibi Moon also protects Sailor Moon when she finally faces Sailor Galaxia in her palace.
Just like in their earlier encounter in the park, Sailor Galaxia tries to provoke Sailor Moon, aiming to manipulate her emotions and loyalty to defeat her. To Galaxia, loyalty means nothing—she has no qualms about killing her own followers and even considers betraying Chaos once she becomes strong enough.
Unfortunately for Sailor Galaxia, her master has long intended to betray her. As Chaos begins to awaken, growing ever more powerful before Sailor Moon and Galaxia’s eyes, Sailor Chibi Chibi Moon decides to shed her disguise. In a stunning transformation, she reveals her true identity: Sailor Cosmos, the future form of Sailor Moon herself.
Sailor Cosmos hails from a future where Chaos has become Sailor Chaos, unleashing death and irreversible destruction across the universe. In her time, Sailor Cosmos loses all hope and clings to the past—especially to the choices made by her younger self. Now, in the form of Chibi Chibi, Sailor Cosmos has traveled back in time to convince her younger self to destroy not only Chaos, but also the Galaxy Cauldron itself.
In the world of Sailor Moon, the Galaxy Cauldron is not only the birthplace of the stars—it is also what allows the universe to be reborn. It is likely the source of the Sailor Guardians' reincarnations after death. For this reason, Sailor Moon refuses her future self’s plea, declaring that she will find a way to protect the universe’s cycle of life without destroying the Galaxy Cauldron.
Using the power of all the Sailor Crystals, Sailor Moon leaps into the Galaxy Cauldron, disappearing with Chaos itself. This courageous act weakens Chaos—but Sailor Cosmos knows it will one day return. However, Sailor Moon’s actions reignite her hope, and she returns to the future filled with gratitude.
