What is an acrylic figure?

Basically, it is a miniature character of an anime character. They are 2D and printed on plastic and usually come with a stand to display the figure. The colors and art style vary, but usually appear to be from a screen shot of that character in the anime. There are also many variations available, with different poses, outfits and more produced for the most popular characters. Lately, acrylic figures are available for just about every recent anime.

Acrylic figures vary in size, but are usually about 15 cm (6 inches) or less and are very thin. The outline around the art itself is usually clear, especially when the figure is accompanied by a 2D background to complete the display. They are very light and difficult to break - although you should avoid scratching the back of them, which is often unfinished, so it is easy to remove the image if you are not careful.

But while this may explain exactly what an acrylic figure is, it doesn't explain why it has become so popular in recent years in Japan.

What are the benefits?

3D figures have always held a special place in the world of otaku merchandise, and that's unlikely to change anytime soon. But acrylic figures have still gained popularity for a number of reasons. First of all, they are much more affordable for a figure that still looks great. Life-size anime figures can easily cost over 100€, even in Japan. And if you settle for a smaller 3D figure, chances are it's in a cuter "chibi" art style that may not be what you're looking for. Meanwhile, most acrylic figures cost less than $20.

Another selling point of acrylic figures is that they take up much less storage space than 3D figures. They can be stored flat, so it's easy to have lots of them in a box or drawer when you don't need them. When you display them, they only take up a few inches of shelf space for their stand. Between being more compact and more affordable, acrylic figures give an otaku a chance to own more characters than ever before!
