What is Cosplay?

Cosplay is the art of creating or buying costumes and accessories of a character, often from fiction (series, film, video game, anime ...) in order to put them on and then embody the said character during photo shoots, gatherings of enthusiasts or even on stage in the manner of the theater!

We often think, wrongly, that cosplay was born in Japan, probably because of the extent that the phenomenon has taken in this country. But it is quite different ...
At the origins, 1939 : the first American Science Fiction convention, WorldCon is inaugurated. Forrest J Ackerman, a young man in his twenties at the time, goes there as a "Man from the Future" who spits sparks. The creator of Vampirella and coiner of the term "Scifi" pitches the idea of dressing up as his favorite character and becomes the first cosplayer in history!

Cosplay on anime !

This is the most famous anime style of dress around the world: in fact, it is very popular in Europe and the United States. The goal is to dress like your favorite anime character.

Cosplay is not just an outfit, it's a whole attitude: the person who chooses to dress as their favorite anime hero will also imitate their body expressions, gestures and poses.

If the cosplayer can buy a ready-made costume in a store, it is preferable to recreate the anime character's outfit oneself, making sure that the costume is as faithful as possible. You will have to make sure that all the accessories that characterize the character are present! You will also have to reproduce the character's makeup and attitude.

Cosplayers, or "people who practice cosplay," like, for the most part, to gather at conventions and fairs that may deal with themes such as science fiction, anime or even video games and many other universes conducive to creation! They wear their costumes, participate in fashion shows or contests, pose for amateur or professional photographers, and sometimes even shoot videos. They can also host video game or movie releases in stores and cinemas, meet with children in hospitals, etc.

To watch cosplayers, you can go to the Harajuku or Shinjuku districts in Japan, or attend the World Cosplay Summit, an event created in 2003 in Japan and organizing competitions between cosplayer pairs. Needless to say, the costume must be made from scratch to be able to participate in a competition, and that the most famous animes (Naruto, Bleach...) are to be avoided to stand out!"
