Luffy is undeniably one of the most creative and adaptable fighters out there today.
This verdict isn’t just because of his Devil Fruit power, which gives him an edge over the competition, but also thanks to his quick-thinking mind, able to come up with innovative maneuvers on the fly. His quirky, creative style has given birth to some of the anime’s most iconic forms—from Gear 2 to the hilarious Afro Luffy (if fans consider it a real form). But beyond the raw power of these transformations, their designs are truly a wonder to behold.

8. Luffy becomes a true tank after transforming into Gear 4 Tank Man
Gear 4 Tank Man first appears in episode 806
When Luffy first debuted his Gear 4 form in Dressrosa, fans likely didn’t realize that Bounce Man was only a sub-form—neither did Luffy. It wasn’t until Whole Cake Island that this became clear, when Luffy unveiled Gear 4 Tank Man to defeat Charlotte Cracker. While Tank Man is mostly identical to Bounce Man, it’s noticeably rounder.
Instead of coating his pecs and shoulders, his Armament Haki now enveloped his bloated belly, glowing with a fiery red hue. His cheeks and lips were so puffed up he could barely speak. This transformation was the result of Luffy's insane consumption of crackers during the fight, turning him into a literal tank. Even if this form was a one-time use, it definitely made an impact—and gave fans plenty of laughs.

7. Luffy blows air into his bones to create Gear 3
Gear 3 Luffy first appears in episode 288
Gear 3 Luffy doesn’t get the recognition it deserves, mostly because it followed the jaw-dropping debut of Gear 2. But this Tom and Jerry–inspired form is incredible in its own right. Before One Piece's time skip, Luffy had to blow into his thumb to inflate his arm like a balloon. He could grow to the size of a building and cause mass destruction.
To make it even more unique, Luffy would then deflate into a chibi version of himself. That form was entertaining on its own, even if it portrayed Luffy at his goofiest. Regardless, Gear 3 packed a serious punch, even if it wasn’t Luffy’s flashiest form.
6. The shadows of Thriller Bark unite to create Nightmare Luffy
Nightmare Luffy first appears in episode 370
After consuming numerous shadows Moria tried to steal on Thriller Bark, Luffy became the perfect candidate to defeat Oars in this Scooby-Doo–inspired arc. Nightmare Luffy is basically the result of a fusion dance between Luffy and the Hulk, only with a blue tint. Everything about this form is meant to be intimidating—from the spiked hair and massive forearms to the dark, hollow eyes that match the arc’s zombie theme.
Luffy even had a sword on his back, which he could wield thanks to the swordsman’s shadow inside him. What's even more fascinating is how this form seems to foreshadow the eventual creation of Gear 4. It’s likely that Luffy had something similar in mind when he later developed Gear 4 Bounce Man.
5. Base Luffy can (almost) do it all
Luffy's base form first appears in episode 1
While each of Luffy’s forms adds to his legend, his base form is still amazing. As a skilled fighter with the Gum-Gum Fruit, Luffy can stretch his body to its absolute limits. This elasticity lets him twist, contort, and inflate at will, throwing off both his enemies and spectators.
Thanks to his creativity, Luffy has developed an incredible arsenal of mind-blowing techniques that highlight his ingenuity. With iconic moves like Gum-Gum Pistol, Gum-Gum Gatling, and many more, he constantly impresses. All of this proves how perfect the Devil Fruit is for him—no one else could use such a seemingly simple power in such brilliant ways.
4. Gear 4 Bounce Man reveals the fruits of Luffy’s time-skip training
Gear 4 Bounce Man first appears in episode 726
After the time skip in One Piece, it was clear Luffy was hiding something—but no one knew what until Dressrosa. During his fight with Doflamingo, Luffy finally unveiled his new Gear form, combining the cleverness of Gear 2 with Haki mastery. The pink glow of Gear 2 and the black hue of Haki formed a deep crimson look. With Nightmare Luffy vibes and a completely new appearance, it was easily Luffy’s most radical transformation to date.

Luffy’s eyes became sharper, outlined in black to emphasize his dark pupils. Haki patterns formed tribal-like tattoos across his puffed-up chest and shoulders. Beyond the form’s physicality, Luffy could coil his arms like springs and multiply his limbs to overwhelm opponents. He could even move his legs so fast that he flew through the air. It was the peak of Luffy’s creativity—and left an unforgettable mark.
3. Gear 2 perfectly represents Luffy’s recklessness and intuition
Gear 2 first appears in episode 272
Looking back at Gear 2, its design might seem simple, but it remains iconic. With a pinkish glow radiating across Luffy's body and steam constantly rising from his skin, this form launched him to an entirely new level. Not only is the visual impact amazing, but its creation is even more impressive.
Fans already knew Luffy for stretching his limbs in battle, but this was the first time he took it further by turning his entire body rubbery from the inside. Specifically, he used his blood vessels to boost circulation, increasing his body heat, speed, and of course, his power. This bold and clever approach perfectly encapsulates who Luffy is at his core.
2. Gear 4 Snake Man gives Luffy his coolest form to fight Katakuri
Gear 4 Snake Man first appears in episode 870
With Bounce Man and Tank Man already in play, it made sense for Luffy to unveil another form. While Bounce Man was constantly a step behind Katakuri, Luffy needed something faster to face one of Big Mom’s most powerful children. Enter Snake Man—a sleeker, more agile version of Gear 4, maintaining Luffy’s size but with sharper muscles and a ripped physique.
Snake Man keeps the core aesthetic of Gear 4: black outlines around the eyes, Armament Haki coating the arms and legs, and wild, floating hair. But what sets it apart is its functionality—punches fly like serpents, zigzagging at incredible speeds in all directions. This form makes Luffy look undeniably badass, earning an A+ on the coolness scale.
1. Gear 5 is without a doubt the peak of Luffy
Gear 5 first appears in episode 1071
Luffy has many forms that suit him well, but none quite compare to Gear 5. It’s the perfect representation of Luffy himself—limitless, joyful, and utterly free. With this form, Luffy can do anything he imagines, from becoming a giant to pulling off ridiculous, cartoon-style antics straight out of a Looney Tunes episode.
Nothing captures that sense of freedom like his transcendent white appearance, which radiates pure, chaotic energy. His flowing white hair, the clouds swirling around his body it all contributes to this surreal and liberated vibe, as if he’s one with the sky, at peace and full of joy.
