As the protagonist of the prequel film, Yuta has a personal backstory already known to viewers. He is a heroic jujutsu sorcerer with a heart of gold and an impressive range of skills and techniques. Even before his grand return at the end of season 2, Yuji, Megumi, and Nobara had heard the legends of Yuta. Due to unfortunate circumstances, Yuta will meet them in season 3, not as an ally, but as their personal executioner. As a key character, there are important details to recap regarding Yuta Okkotsu.
Updated on February 21, 2025, by Ajay Aravind: The end of the Jujutsu Kaisen manga does not mark the end of the anime, as there are still 133 chapters to be adapted. Yuta Okkotsu, portrayed by JJK, will play a significant role in many of them, especially as the battle against Sukuna intensifies. Given his involvement in the Culling Game and beyond, we've updated this article with additional information.
Yuta Okkotsu's character preceded Jujutsu Kaisen itself.
Gege Akutami created both Yuta and Rika long before the manga.
Although Yuta Okkotsu existed before Yuji Itadori, Akutami chose to make the latter the main protagonist. Like Yuji at the beginning of season 1, Yuta is an outsider to Jujutsu, recruited after the tragic death of his beloved friend Rika Orimoto, who was just 11 years old. Before her death, Rika gave him a promise ring so that they would always be together. As Rika dies on the street, Yuta says her name, unknowingly casting a curse. Rika continues to exist alongside him as a Special Grade Cursed Spirit, threatening anyone who endangers even the slightest bit of his well-being.
Rika proves to be so powerful that she is eventually known as the Queen of Curses within the Jujutsu Society. Fearing her, the elders of the Jujutsu Society sentence Yuta to death, but Satoru Gojo manages to enroll him at the Jujutsu School. There, he meets his allies Maki Zenin, Inumaki Toge, and Panda, who come to learn of Yuta's kindness through their missions. As Yuta begins to control his powers and grow closer to his new friends, he faces the enemy Suguru Geto, who threatens the Jujutsu Society with a dangerous new world order.
Yuta defeated Suguru Geto and freed Rika.
Geto wanted to use Rika for himself.
Despite Geto's friendly demeanor toward Yuta, Yuta is repulsed by Geto's hatred for non-sorcerers. Geto announces the date of the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons, putting the Jujutsu community on high alert. The large-scale attack in Shinjuku between Geto's forces and the Jujutsu Sorcerers turns out to be a ruse to distract sorcerers and keep them away from Yuta. Geto's main goal is to use his Cursed Technique to absorb Rika and claim her immense strength for himself.
Though isolated and less experienced than Geto, Yuta remains unwavering in his battle. After tending to his injured friends, Yuta focuses all his attention on Geto. Facing Geto's cursed spirits, Yuta eventually destroys them all. From an armed clash to a physical brawl, the two sides are at an impasse. Yuta realizes he must tap into all of Rika's energy to win. He convinces her to lend him her full strength, promising that in exchange, he will accompany her to the afterlife. Yuta seals this sacrificial promise with a kiss to Rika, and with even greater power than before, he triumphs over Geto.

The Final Fate of Geto and Yuta's Reclaimed Freedom
Geto manages to escape, gravely wounded, and faces his former friend, Gojo. Unable to escape or retaliate, Geto accepts his fate, and Gojo kills him. Unfortunately, Gojo’s decision to hide his friend’s body from the Jujutsu elders allowed Kenjaku to implant Geto’s brain and take over his body. Yuta likely feels guilty for not finishing Geto off, but later has the chance to correct his mistake when he faces Kenjaku. As over a year passes before Kenjaku reveals himself, Yuta from JJK: 0 has time to become even stronger before the events of Jujutsu Kaisen begin.
Instead of Yuta needing to escape into the afterlife, it turned out that the kiss had allowed Rika's soul to pass on. Only Rika’s Special Grade Cursed Spirit remained behind, a nostalgic memory with equivalent power. After the conclusion of Jujutsu Kaisen: 0, it's assumed that Yuta trains abroad during the events of season 1 and the Shibuya Incident. While his heroic return after the Shibuya Incident is thrilling, the tone quickly shifts when it is revealed that Yuta has been tasked with eliminating Yuji Itadori.
Yuta's Evolving Role Continues Through JJK
Yuji was never in danger with Yuta as his executioner.
Yuta’s role in JJK is unique, as he has evolved greatly throughout his brief screen time. Initially, he is a mere bystander, caught in a difficult situation he was never truly prepared to handle. Ironically, much like Yuji, he is saved by Gojo and learns to become an asset rather than a feared threat. Yuta quickly establishes himself as a powerful and inspiring hero, turning his challenging circumstances into his greatest strength.
Though beloved, Yuta quickly becomes the biggest threat to the hero Yuji, who is also adored by fans. In a matter of minutes, the inspiring hero Yuta transforms into a complex antihero. Manga fans already know that Yuta never intended to execute Yuji, even though their brief confrontation and his apparent revenge were certainly unsettling. Ultimately, Yuta admitted to having staged the entire performance to deceive the Jujutsu elders and saved Yuji from them. The preparations for the Culling Game soon begin.
Yuta's Versatile Abilities Make Him a Formidable Sorcerer
Yuta's cursed energy reserves surpass even Gojo's.
Though he starts his journey with no knowledge of cursed energy and the world of sorcerers, Yuta quickly becomes one of the most powerful sorcerers in the world. Despite his age making him a student, Yuta is ranked as a Special Grade sorcerer. While this is mainly due to Rika's power, he gradually earns his Special Grade rank after Rika's release. By the end of Jujutsu Kaisen: 0, Gojo explains that Yuta's natural abilities and immense cursed energy stem from his ancestors. Descended from the great sorcerer Michizane Sugawara, Yuta is a distant relative of the Gojo clan.
Thanks to his acquired skills, Yuta is regarded as almost as strong as Satoru Gojo. His preferred combat style involves wielding a sword. While he still wields a katana, he is also proficient with other weapons. Even without a weapon, Yuta learns hand-to-hand combat, initially supported by his classmate Maki Zenin. After perfecting his strength, Yuta becomes capable of delivering powerful close-range blows.

Yuta also possesses the unique ability to copy other Cursed Techniques after Rika consumes a part of his target's body. This power is a common phenomenon in shonen anime. Unlike Neito Monoma's Copy ability in My Hero Academia, Yuta's Copy can indefinitely store an unlimited number of replicated Cursed Techniques in Rika. However, his connection with Rika lasts only five minutes, which is more than enough to eliminate most of the characters in Jujutsu Kaisen.
Yuta's Domain Expansion is a True Power
Yuta's Domain Expansion was revealed during his fight against Sukuna, where the young Jujutsu sorcerer truly impressed the King of Curses. As expected, his Copy transforms into a dome-like structure filled with countless swords, each symbolizing a previously replicated Cursed Technique. Thanks to his True Mutual Love, likely named after Yuta's bond with Rika, he can select a copied technique and set it as the infallible effect of the barrier.
While this may seem like a significant limitation, it prevents Yuta from being overpowered like Gojo or Sukuna. The main drawback of True Mutual Love is that Yuta doesn't know the Cursed Techniques represented by the swords, so he must choose one and use it. Given his vast arsenal of copied techniques and combat mastery, this limitation doesn't hold him back for long.
Yuta Plays a Key Role Against the King of Curses
Yuta's fights are among the most thrilling in Jujutsu Kaisen. Defeating Kenjaku was relatively easy, with the heroes using Fumihiko Takaba's Comedian to distract the villain from Yuta's imminent arrival. Yuta quickly decapitated Kenjaku and had his body devoured by Rika. He then joined the fight against Sukuna, who was weakened from his recent battle with Gojo. The King of Curses suffered severe damage when trapped in Yuta's True Mutual Love. Eventually, Sukuna fatally wounded Yuta, prompting Rika to take him to the operation's headquarters.
Consuming Kenjaku earlier proved useful against the King of Curses: Yuta managed to place Kenjaku's brain inside Gojo's skull, gaining control of the Six Eyes, Infinity, and the Infinite Void. Upon returning to battle, Yuta was able to unleash Gojo's Infinite Void on Sukuna, who reveled in his opponent's extreme measures. Despite several attempts to use the Hollow Purple ability, Yuta's Infinite Void collapsed, and his five-minute connection with Rika was surpassed. Yuta was ultimately sidelined, allowing Yuji to take over.
What Happened to Yuta Okkotsu After JJK?
Although Yuta was considered dead for a long time, Rika managed to restore his body and reimplant his brain. Yuta then apologized to Yuji and the others for his perceived mistakes, but Panda, Yuji, and Todo defended his choices. In the main timeline of Jujutsu Kaisen, Yuta Okkotsu's storyline concludes in the final chapter 271. He is out with Maki and Inumaki, with a chibi Panda hanging from Yuta's shoulder, just four panels before the official conclusion. However, Gege Akutami published an epilogue nearly three months later. Chapter 271.5 is divided into four distinct sections, each focusing on specific characters.
