⛩ The Battle of Karakura is the story of the bloody confrontation between the elite of Gotei 13: the Captains and Vice-Captains against the elite of the Arrancars: the Espada and their Fraccion.

The Espada is made up of ten Arrancars of exemplary strength. Its members are graded by number in descending order, from 0 to 9. This number is precisely tattooed on each of their members to identify them. Alongside Sōsuke Aizen, Gin Ichimaru and Kaname Tōsen, Espada's power rivals that of the Captains of the 13 Divisions.

The rank of Captain is given to one of the Senior Officers leading one of the 13 Divisions. Their second-in-command is appointed Vice-Captain. The sine qua non for attaining this rank is to awaken the Bankai, the second stage of Zanpakutō liberation.

Captains are therefore the highest-ranking soldiers in the 13 Divisions, and also the strongest among them. The strength of this army rests almost exclusively on these officers.
