As a Pillar of the Demon Slayer Corps, Giyu is a very powerful swordsman. He was able to easily defeat the transformed Spider Demon Father and Rui, the Fifth Lower Moon.

However, he does not consider himself a true Pillar, although he masters Water Breathing. He believes that one of his peers, Sabito, who died saving other demon slayer trainees, was the only one who could fill this role. Giyu has developed an additional technique to Water Breathing, which he is the only one to know, "Water Breath 11th form: Calm"
