Who is Portgas D. Ace in One Piece?

Portgas D. Ace is the biological son of Gol D. Roger, the former King of the Pirates, and Portgas D. Rouge. He is also the sworn brother of Monkey D. Luffy and Sabo.

Ace is portrayed as a talented and independent pirate. He sets sail before Luffy and eventually becomes commander of the Second Division of the Whitebeard Pirates. He shares a deep bond with Edward Newgate, whom he regards as his father.

His story is closely linked to several major events in One Piece. His personal quest, his bond with Luffy and his membership of the Whitebeard Pirates make him a central character in a significant part of the story.

The bond between Ace, Luffy and Sabo

One of the most important aspects of Ace's story is his relationship with Luffy and Sabo. The three boys meet during childhood and develop a very strong brotherly bond.

Although they are not all biological brothers, they share a cup of sake and become sworn brothers. Each then follows his own path, but the bond between them remains particularly important.

Ace plays a protective role towards Luffy in particular. He considers his younger brother someone important whom he wants to protect, even when their adventures take them down different paths.

The power of the Mera Mera no Mi

One of the most famous characteristics of Portgas D. Ace is his Mera Mera no Mi power. This Devil Fruit allows him to create, control and become fire.

Thanks to this power, Ace develops a spectacular fighting style based on flames. He can launch fiery attacks, create powerful explosions and use his body, transformed into fire, to fight his opponents.

His power explains why Ace is often depicted surrounded by flames in One Piece figures. The fiery effects give the models a particularly dynamic appearance and immediately bring his abilities to mind.

The famous Fire Fist Ace

Ace is known by the nickname Fire Fist Ace. This nickname directly refers to his Mera Mera no Mi power and one of his most famous techniques.

His fire attacks quickly become feared throughout the pirate world. Ace can unleash immense quantities of flames and turn his battles into truly spectacular scenes.

This characteristic is particularly popular in merchandise. An Ace figure depicted with flame effects highlights one of the character's most iconic features.

Ace and the Whitebeard Pirates

After setting sail, Ace becomes the captain of the Spade Pirates. His crew eventually becomes part of the Whitebeard Pirates following Ace's encounter with Edward Newgate.

Whitebeard recognises the young pirate's qualities and offers him a place in his crew. Ace subsequently becomes commander of the Second Division and develops a particularly strong bond with the other members.

To Ace, Whitebeard represents a father figure. He considers the crew members his brothers and sisters and places great importance on protecting them.

The pursuit of Blackbeard

An important event in Ace's journey is his confrontation with Marshall D. Teach, also known as Blackbeard. Teach was previously a member of the Whitebeard Pirates before leaving the crew after committing a serious offence.

Ace decides to pursue Blackbeard in order to find him and bring him back. This decision sets off a series of events that have major consequences for the balance of power in the One Piece world.

The confrontation between Ace and Blackbeard is therefore a decisive moment in his story and helps set the stage for several major events later in the narrative.

Ace and the Marineford arc

The story of Portgas D. Ace is closely linked to the Marineford War, one of the major events in One Piece. After being captured by the Marines, Ace is sentenced to public execution.

This situation prompts the Whitebeard Pirates and their allies to mobilise in an attempt to save him. Luffy also decides to take part in the battle to find his brother.

The Marineford War brings together many major characters from the One Piece universe and causes significant changes in the world of piracy.

The personality of Portgas D. Ace

Ace is generally portrayed as a warm, protective and independent character. He has a more mature temperament than Luffy, while sharing some of his impulsiveness.

He attaches enormous importance to his loved ones and considers his crew members his family. His loyalty to Whitebeard and his affection for Luffy play a central role in his decisions.

Ace is also affected by questions about his origins and his name. Being the son of Gol D. Roger profoundly influences how he sees himself and how he views the question of his own existence.

The importance of family to Ace

The concept of family plays an essential role in Portgas D. Ace's story. His past shows that family bonds can go beyond biological ties.

With Luffy and Sabo, he discovers a form of brotherhood founded on a promise and mutual affection. Later, Whitebeard also offers him a place within his own pirate family.

This importance placed on the bonds between companions explains why Ace is willing to take risks to protect those he considers his family.

The evolution of Portgas D. Ace in One Piece

As the story progresses, various details help us better understand Ace, his past and his motivations. His childhood, his relationship with Luffy and Sabo, his arrival among the Whitebeard Pirates and his battles gradually shape his character.

His appearance also changes depending on the different periods depicted in the story. Collectors can therefore find Ace with his distinctive hat, tattoo, pirate clothing or flames.

These different versions explain why a Portgas D. Ace figure can represent a specific period of his adventure and become an important piece in a collection dedicated to One Piece.
