Together with the spirit of Pharaoh Atem, he holds the title of "king of games" (king of duelists in Japanese version).
Yugi possessed the three thousand year old (five thousand in the dubbing) mystical millennium puzzle, which allowed his body to host the puzzle spirit, Yami Yugi. Yugi was initially unaware of his existence and control of Yugi's body, and would unwittingly switch to Yami Yugi at difficult times.
He lives with his paternal grandfather, Solomon Muto, and his mother.
Yugi is part of a close-knit group of best friends: Joey Wheeler, Tristan Taylor, Téa Gardner and Bakura Ryou. Yugi's friends often cheer her on from the sidelines, and Joey has duelled alongside her. Yugi has been friends with Téa since childhood and has a crush on her. Téa has been shown to have romantic feelings for Yugi and Yami Yugi.
Biography
History
Yugi lived in his family's game store, Kame Game, with his mother and grandfather. His grandfather taught him a lot about the game, Duel Monsters.
Joey and Tristan used to bully Yugi. Joey even went so far as to take a piece of Yugi's millennium puzzle and throw it into a canal. However, Yugi defended Joey and Tristan when they were attacked by Ushio, claiming that they were his friends, while Ushio claimed that he was protecting Yugi in order to earn money. Joey and Tristan became Yugi's friends after the incident and Joey got the puzzle piece back.
After solving the millennium puzzle, Yugi unknowingly became the host of Yami Yugi, the spirit of Pharaoh Atem. He shared his body with Yami, who sometimes took control, usually to help Yugi and his friends.
Yugi and Joey once visited Burgerpalooza, only to find Téa working there. She was afraid that if they told, she would be expelled because it is against the school rules to have part-time jobs. (In the dubbing business, she feared she would be fired because they might reveal that she was under 18, the required age to work there). She splashed ketchup on their burgers, warning them not to tell. They told her they didn't even know she worked there and didn't say a word.

Yugi then found Téa in a warehouse, filmed by a pervert, who threatened to reveal that she worked at Burgerpalooza. (In the dubbing, it was a mugger who tricked her into writing a note, claiming that Yugi and Joey had given her a dance studio.) Yugi attacked the man, but was thrown against a wall. Téa also lost consciousness after trying to attack him. Yugi then transformed into Yami Yugi , who defeated the man in a card drawing game and crushed him by Mind . Yugi came to believe that he had saved Téa himself, although he did not remember how he had done it.
Yu-Gi-Oh!
Duelist Kingdom
Yugi defeated Joey in Duel Monsters at school and decided to invite Joey, Téa and Tristan to see his grandfather's rare card, the "Blue-Eyes White Dragon", after school. Seto Kaiba, who overheard, kidnapped Grandpa and forced him into a duel for his "blue eyes", as he refused to trade or sell it. Yugi and his friends caught up after Solomon's defeat and saw Kaiba tear the "Blue-Eyed White Dragon" in front of them. Indignant, Yugi challenged Kaiba to a Duel, and Solomon gave Yugi his Deck. Yugi duelled with Kaiba as Yami Yugi and discovered that Kaiba had the other three "Blue-Eyed White Dragons" in his Deck, but defeated him using "Exodia the Forbidden," taking Kaiba's title as Duel Monsters World Champion.
Since Joey was having trouble winning in Duel Monsters, Yugi asked his grandfather to help him train Joey.
Maximillion Pegasus heard about Yugi's victory over Kaiba and sent him a video inviting him to participate in his Duelist Kingdom tournament. Pegasus appeared on TV and Dueled Yugi to the spot, while freezing everyone in the room. Pegasus placed a time limit on the duel and won because time ran out seconds before Yugi could claim victory. As a penalty for Yugi's defeat, Pegasus stole Grandpa's soul.
Yugi entered the tournament in order to save grandpa. At the dock, before boarding the ship for the tournament, he gave Joey one of his two Star Chips, allowing Joey to participate and help him.
On the ship, Yugi met Weevil Underwood , who acted friendly towards him and told Yugi that he knew of some new secret rules to introduce into the tournament. Shortly after Weevil left, Yugi gave Joey the "Time Wizard" card, telling him how it could be useful in a difficult situation. Yugi met with Weevil again later and showed him his "Exodia" cards, which Weevil threw overboard, to hinder Yugi's deck. Joey jumped into the water to retrieve them, but after retrieving two, he was hit by the current and Yugi dove in to save him. Both are then rescued by the stowaways, Téa and Tristan, who throw a rope ladder at them.
Once the tournament began, Yugi tracked down Weevil for revenge, but Weevil ran away, leading him into a forest. Yugi suspected that this had to do with the new rules Weevil mentioned. Weevil led them to a meadow, where he accepted Yugi's challenge, as his monsters got power bonuses on the field there. Yugi moved on to Yami Yugi , who bet both his Deck and Star Chip, which earned him Weevil's two Star Chips after his victory.
Yugi encouraged Joey in his Duel against Mai . As Yami Yugi, he offered Joey abstract clues to help him win. Joey defeated Mai using the "Time Wizard" card, Yugi gave him.
While searching for food, Yugi and his friends found some fish that Mako Tsunami had prepared. Unbeknownst to them, Mako had placed it as bait to attract opponents, where his monsters were taking great advantage of the terrain. Mako appeared, angry at the theft of his food. After Yugi introduced himself, Mako was happy to meet the Duelist, who defeated Kaiba, and shared the food with him and his friends. Yugi got up to leave, but Mako stopped him by throwing a harpoon in front of him and demanded a Duel. Yugi switched to Yami and defeated Mako, winning two more Star Chips.
Yugi and his friends saw a competitor forced off the island because he was out of Star Chips. The boy claimed that they had been stolen, along with his Deck. He described the thief and where he met him. Yugi promised to get his Star Chips back, before the boat left the island. At the crime scene, they met the thief, whose face was disguised. He duelled Yugi, with five stolen Star Chips at stake, and Yami Yugi soon realized that the thief was Kaiba's brother, Mokuba . Mokuba explained how Yugi's humiliation of Kaiba led to his departure, giving Pegasus the opportunity to take over KaibaCorp. Mokuba sought revenge on Yugi for this. Unable to win the Duel, he grabbed Yugi's Star Chips, but Yami discouraged Mokuba and promised to help him and Kaiba.
The group returned to the bay, but the boat had already left. Mokuba showed Kemo that Yugi had retrieved the Star Chips, but Kemo threw them into the water, including some of Yugi's. Kemo grabbed Mokuba to take him back to Pegasus, but Yugi challenged Kemo to a duel for Mokuba's freedom. Since Kemo was not a Duelist, he told Yugi to come back in an hour (4 hours in the dub) and that he would have an opponent arranged for him.
Yugi returned and faced Ghost Kaiba , who pretended to be the real Seto Kaiba and used his Deck. With the help of the real Kaiba, who weakened Ghost Kaiba's "Blue-Eyed White Dragons" via a virus, Yami Yugi won. Yugi recovered Kaiba's Deck, but Kemo had already disappeared with Mokuba.
Yugi was not allowed to help Joey in his Duel with Rex Raptor . At the beginning of the duel, Yugi went to find Tristan, who left angry at Joey for agreeing to these conditions. Tristan reminded Yugi that he should always be at the Duel to offer his friendship to Joey, so the two returned to watch.
That night, Mai shared her food with Yugi and his friends, though she promised that they would be enemies again tomorrow.
Bakura Ryou appeared at their campsite, shortly after Mai left for a walk. As the group talked about the cards they owned and identified with, Yugi encouraged Téa to pick one for herself and chose "Dark Magician" as her own. Bakura suggested they play a friendly duel, where Yugi includes the cards Joey, Tristan and Téa identified with; "Flame Swordsman", "Cyber Commander" and "Magician of Faith", in his Deck and he can show them how his card, "Change of Heart" works. Bakura became Yami Bakura , who trapped the souls of the group in the cards they selected. He then took the Millennium Puzzle from Yugi, but Yami Yugi emerged and faced Yami Bakura in a Shadow Game, staking the Millennium Puzzle, in order to return his friends.
Yugi's friends appeared instead of the monsters they selected when Yami Yugi summoned them. When the "Dark Magician", Yugi was summoned, the two Yugis met. In the Japanese version, Yugi was aware of Yami's existence and the two agreed that this was not the time to keep secrets. In the dub, Yugi was not aware of Yami's existence until that time, although he said that he often heard a powerful voice coming from the Millennium Puzzle when he was dueling. Yugi told his friends of Yami's existence, that he is the spirit of the Millennium Puzzle and apologized for not telling them before. In the dubbing, Yugi admitted that he felt Yami's presence while dueling and felt that they could trust him. Yami managed to win the Duel, with the help of Bakura betraying Yami Bakura, bringing everyone back to normal, although Téa, Tristan and Joey thought the Duel had been a dream. Yugi didn't take the time to explain because they heard Mai screaming at that moment.
The group found the Eliminator , PaniK , who had just beaten Mai and taken her eight Star Chips. Yugi accused PaniK of being a coward and defeated him in a duel as Yami Yugi, regaining Mai's Star Chips. He offered them to Mai, who reluctantly took them back, noticing that she owed him one.
Later that night, Kaiba arrived on the island and Yugi returned his Deck.
The next day, Mai left a letter explaining that she was gone and that she owes Yugi for getting her Star Chips back. Joey was then separated from his friends, who searched a cave after finding his wallet outside. After running from numerous traps, they found Joey in a Duel with Bonz . Joey won, but the Keith Bandit gang trapped Yugi and his friends in the cave, sealing the entrance with a rock.
Using the Millennium Ring of Bakura as a guide, the friends found the Paradox brothers guarding an exit. Yugi and Joey fought them in a Tag Duel to win the passage. After winning Yugi and Joey each had enough Star Chips to enter the final and Yami Yugi passed the brothers' riddle test to get out.
On the stairs of Pegasus Castle, Téa reflected on Yugi's different personalities and wondered if there could be two Yugis. Yugi admitted that he felt like there was someone else living inside him, but hoped he wasn't going crazy.
At the top of the stairs, Kaiba blocked the way and told Yugi about a Duel. Yami took control and confronted Kaiba, using his Duel Disk technology . As Yami was about to win, Kaiba stood up on the edge of the castle, so that the shockwaves from Yugi's attack could knock him down to death. (In the English anime, Yugi talked to Yami, telling him not to do it.) Yami thought about it, but finally decided to attack. Téa ran to Yugi insisting that it was not like him and called the ordinary Yugi out. Yugi took control in time to cancel the move. He fell to his knees, shocked by what he had almost done. Kaiba took his turn and won the Duel, claiming five of Yugi's Star Chips.
Now fully aware of the other Yugi's existence, Yugi confessed it to his friends, telling them that he is afraid of him and therefore afraid of Duel. Kaiba called Yugi weak, but Téa protested that Yugi had saved him and that Kaiba was the real loser. After Kaiba left, Yugi continued to mope. Joey offered to take Yugi's Star Chips, so that he could enter the finals, but Yugi ignored him. Frustrated, Joey grabbed Yugi by the shirt, asking him if he cared about his grandfather.
Mai appeared and was informed of what had just happened. She offered Yugi her excessive Star Chips, as per her promise from earlier, but Yugi didn't even recognize Mai's appearance. Annoyed, Mai told him to grow up and hold on to the Star Chips. She accused him of being afraid of the duel again and challenged him. Téa agreed to the Duel instead, to win back the Star Chips from Yugi.
Yugi slowly began to come out of his depression as he watched Téa Duel. After Mai surrendered, Yugi approached her about the face-down card she did not use. Mai denied losing to him (in the dubbing, she said that some cards just weren't worth playing).
Inside the castle, the group was invited to watch Pegasus Duel Kaiba. Seeing that Kaiba was dueling to save Mokuba , Yugi opted to support Kaiba. Kaiba was trapped in the Soul Prison card of Pegasus, after his defeat. Yugi then shouted at Pegasus asking him who he was to bother people and their families like that.
The finalists along with Téa, Tristan and Bakura were treated to a meal that night, where the finalists paired up. After the meal, Yugi gave Joey his "Glory of the King's Hand", as it is mandatory for every finalist to have it, which is "Glory of the King's Opposite Hand".
That night, Yugi was awakened by his grandfather's voice, calling him. He followed him and found a "Soul Prison" card, with his grandfather's soul inside. Solomon warned him about Pegasus and came with the cards containing the souls of Seto and Mokuba Kaiba. Yugi then woke up, wondering if it was a dream.
Yugi faced Mai in the first duel of the final. Yami Yugi gave little effort to the duel, because he was afraid to face Pegasus. (In the duel, Yugi refused to let Yami Duel, fearing that he would hurt his opponent). This caused Yugi to play badly. Mai's encouraging words brought Yugi back to the top of his game and allowed him to turn the duel around and come out with a win.
Yugi encouraged Joey in his Duel against Bandit Keith.
Yugi faced Joey in the final round. Joey used everything he learned from Yugi, but was still defeated by Yami Yugi. Afterwards, Joey offered to return "Glory of the King's Hand" to Yugi, so that he could claim the prize money. However, Yugi refused, because he had entered the tournament with the intention of saving his grandfather and now the Kaiba brothers. The money was not important to him, but Joey needed it for his sister's eye surgery.
Yugi advanced to Duel Pegasus. At the beginning of the duel, Yugi requested that the souls of the Kaiba brothers be released as well as his grandfather's, if he won. Pegasus agreed but indicated that he planned to take Yugi's soul if he won. Pegasus used his Millennium Eye to read Yami Yugi's mind during the Duel, but Yugi had an idea to counter Pegasus' powers with the risky strategy of having him and Yami change their minds every time they played a face-down card, thus preventing Pegasus from reading their strategy by running the risk of one of them trying something that would hinder the other's plans. After the Yugis destroyed Pegasus' "Toon World" card, Pegasus transported them all to the Shadow Realm. In the shadow realm, Yugi lost his life energy doing the mind-mixing strategy, lacking the spiritual strength to play at that level, and Pegasus continued to successfully read Yami's mind, until Joey, Téa and Tristan blocked his Millennium Eye. Yami defeated Pegasus, sending them both back from the Shadow Realm.
Pegasus disappeared after his Duel with Yugi. Determined to secure the return of the captive souls, Yugi and his friends searched for Pegasus. They found a number of Pegasus' men carrying him away after being assaulted by Yami Bakura . Croquet explained that he had been attacked. (In the dubbing, he said that Pegasus had fallen ill.) Yugi and company headed to Pegasus' tower, where they found a journal entry addressed to the new king of duelists defeating him, explaining why he created Duel Monsters . Yugi then spotted the three "Soul Prison" cards, which are now blank, meaning that souls are no longer imprisoned.
As he was leaving the tower, Yugi ran into Shadi, who used his Millennium Key to enter Yugi's mind. To Shadi's surprise, he found two soul rooms; one for Yugi and one for Yami. Shadi found himself in a Shadow Game with Yami, but was saved by Yugi. Yugi informed Shadi that he did not believe his other self intended to harm him and asked Yami to free Shadi from the game.
A door opened, leading them to a room lined with stone tablets from Duel Monsters . Yugi learned from Shadi that millennia ago, Egyptian kings played Shadow Games with real monsters and magic. After the games turned into a war that threatened to destroy the world, a brave pharaoh sealed the magic. The duo was confronted by the black magician. Shadi prepared to counter by summoning the white dragon with blue eyes . However Yugi insisted that the black magician would never hurt him and asked the magician to let them pass. To Shadi's astonishment, the magician complied. Seeing Yugi's control over the black magician, Shadi thought he might be the chosen one.
Shadi returned himself and Yugi to the outside of Yugi's soul. Before disappearing, he told Yugi his name and claimed he had not told anyone before.
After the group found out that Mokuba was back to normal, Croquet gave Yugi the remaining prizes on behalf of Pegasus, who had been taken to the hospital. Yugi received "The Ties of Friendship" card, was crowned King of the Games and also received the $3 million check, which he gave to Joey for Serenity's eye surgery .
Kaiba thanked Yugi for saving Mokuba and insisted that they should have a fair duel one day to determine who is the best Duelist. Yami Yugi congratulated Yugi for saving everyone (In the dubbing, Yugi pointed out that he didn't even know Yami's name. Yami replied that he had been called many things such as Pharaoh, Yu-Gi-Oh and Yami. Yugi called him Yami and said that he was happy. to call him his friend, while Yami was proud to be one).
Rebecca
As Yugi brought his grandfather home from the hospital, the group was confronted by Rebecca Hawkins. She accused Solomon of stealing her grandfather's "White Dragon with Blue Eyes" and challenged him to a duel. In Kaiba Land, Yugi faced Rebecca in the duel, because her grandfather was unfit to play. The Duel turned out to be an exact repeat of the Duel their grandfathers played long ago over a glass of water. Like the way Solomon went back then when Arthur needed more water, Yugi went to teach Rebecca the heart of the cards . Just then, Arthur arrived, showed that Yugi could have won and explained why he had surrendered. After Rebecca apologized, Yugi gave her the "Bonds of Friendship" card.
Legendary heroes
Mokuba arrived at Kame Game and informed Yugi and his friends that Kaiba's mind had been trapped in the virtual world by The Big Five , while testing a virtual reality machine he had created. After agreeing to help, Yugi, Joey, Téa, Tristan and Mokuba snuck into Kaiba's lab in the adventure game . Yugi, Joey and Mokuba climbed into modules to transport their minds into the virtual world, while Téa and Tristan stood guard.
Yugi, Joey and Mokuba appeared in a graveyard, where they were confronted with "Armored Zombie", "Clown Zombie" and "Dragon Zombie". They summoned monsters to fight them, but the zombies continued to revive stronger than before. However Joey continued to attack them, until Yugi reminded him of his Duel with Bonz . So Joey played "Shield & Sword", dropping their DEF to 0 and Yugi finished the zombies with "Dark Magician". After defeating the zombies, they each received a card indicating the amount of currency they had.
The trio spotted the fairy Iru , who guided them to a town. Here they learned that a prisoner, who might be Kaiba, had been taken to the Cave of Death . They could not get there because of the sandstorm, and a townsman informed them that they would need a "Niwatori" to cross this desert. While searching the town, they found a battle contest with "Niwatori" as the prize.
Yugi and Mokuba watched Joey Duel Madam Butterfly in the Virtual World Coliseum. Once Joey found out that Madam Butterfly was Mai Valentine, Yugi and Mokuba ran to them and explained what happened to Kaiba. Offering to help her, Mai asked her "Lady Harpy" to snatch the "Niwatori" card from the owner of the Coliseum and the four of them ran to the desert. At the edge of the desert, Mai played the "Niwatori" card, producing four large birds for them to ride.
Once they crossed the desert, they reached the template of the Cave of Death. Inside, they found themselves in a labyrinth and were chased by "Labyrinth Tank". Yugi used "magic hats" to hide them and transport them to another part of the labyrinth, where they met Iru and Adena . Iru guided the group to the exit, but it was guarded by "Gate Guardian". Yugi and Joey together summoned "Black Skull Dragon" and equipped him with "Dragon Nails", which made him strong enough to defeat "Gate Guardian". Outside the labyrinth,
At the palace, Yugi and his friends learned that Adena was the queen of the land. (In the dubbing, she was a princess.) Adena informed them of the mythical dragon ritual where they must offer sacrifices to the mythical dragon . They learn that Adena must be the sacrifice of this kingdom and Kaiba must be the sacrifice of another kingdom. Adena tells them about a legendary flying machine that can access the castle where Kaiba is and how she believed that Yugi and his friends were prophesied heroes who would destroy the mythical dragon. Yugi, Joey, Mai and Mokuba agreed to help and were given hero costumes to wear.
On one of the ramparts, they were attacked by monsters that were looking for sacrifice. Yugi, Joey and Mai tried unsuccessfully to fight them. However, Mokuba, who had previously exchanged clothes with Adena, was kidnapped instead. While trying to find a way to rescue Mokuba, Yugi noticed that a recent storm had revealed the outline of the flying machine on the ground below them. Yugi asked Adena how long ago the legend involving the flying machine had taken place. With the unlikelihood that the machine still worked and not enough time to dig it up, Yugi suggested to Joey that they should restore it to the state it was in 1000 years ago, prompting Joey to use "Time Wizard" to bring the machine back 1000 years.
Yugi, Joey and Mai flew the airship to the castle. On the way, they were attacked by monsters, which they countered by summoning their own monsters. Yugi was attacked while his "Dark Magician" was too far away to save him. However Iru, blocked the attack, sacrificing himself. Yugi then played "Swords of Revealing Light" to block the attacks. Angered by Iru's death, Yugi switched to Yami Yugi, who led the group to the castle.
As Yami, he managed to regroup with the Kaiba brothers and defeat the Big Five's "Mythic Dragon" in the final phase by summoning "Dragon Master Knight". Shortly after Adina thanked them and revived Mai, Joey, Mokuba and Iru, the group returned to the real world.

Dungeon Dice Monsters
Grandpa feared for his business, the Kame Game , when the new game store, the Black Clown , opened in Domino City . He ordered Yugi to stay away from the new store. However, Yugi and Téa passed him on their way to school later. Yugi received a flyer for a new Dungeon Dice Monsters game, but Téa dragged him away after blushing at the lady handing out the flyer.
At school, they met the new student, Duke Devlin , the owner of the Black Clown. Joey was jealous of Duke's popularity and challenged him to a game of Duel Monsters . Yugi objected on the condition that Joey and Duke both use the Decks from the packs they open on the spot. Joey lost the televised duel and, to keep his end of the bargain, had to do everything Duke said. Yugi became disgusted after Duke forced Joey to wear a dog suit and act like a dog, so he switched to Yami who challenged Duke to a duel. Duke agreed if they played Dungeon Dice Monsters instead of Duel Monsters and if Yugi lost, he had to give up his "King of Games" title and give up Duel Monsters .
Not knowing the rules, Yami had a difficult start. His chances did not improve as Duke revealed that he had designed Dungeon Dice Monsters with the help of Pegasus. Duke blamed Yugi for Pegasus' disappearance after Duelist Kingdom. Yami used her innate gaming skills to turn the tables on Duke. Yami managed to summon "Dark Magician," which Pegasus had added to the game, and used it to defeat Duke.
After the game, Duke, Yugi and Yugi's friends went to Duke's office. Duke lamented that his dream had been dashed because no one would want to play Dungeon Dice Monsters now. However, Yugi assured him that it was a great game and his friends agreed. Duke apologized for the way he had treated them and they agreed to be friends.
City of battle
Yugi replaced the brown rope around the Millennium Puzzle with a chain, which Yami Yugi complimented and offered advice on how to impress Téa, who was waiting for him. Embarrassed, Yugi asked what he was talking about. As Yugi left the room, his mother asked him who he was talking to. Yugi replied that it was no one and rushed off, telling Yami to stop picking on him, as he offered to help Téa love him. (The Yugis talking about Téa and the scene with Yugi's mother were removed from the dubbing; thus, it is never explained why Yugi was blushing.) Yugi met Téa and went to school with her (in the dubbing, they were going to a soccer game). Yugi told her that Yami was worried about her fate and had no memory of her past.
On the way to school, Yugi ran into Bandit Keith , who was possessed by Marik Ishtar and disguised as a fortune teller. Falling in love with the disguise, Yugi reluctantly let him hold the millennium puzzle to read his future. Keith knocked over the table to Yugi and Téa and ran off with the Puzzle. Yugi and Téa split up to find him. In his search, Yugi followed a series of arrows, although he knew it was a trap, he felt he had no other choice. Yugi caught up with Keith, who had the puzzle bolted to a wall. According to the old rules, Marik had to win the puzzle in a duel, so he challenged Yugi to a duel through Keith. Yugi couldn't switch to Yami during the Duel and soon realized that Bandit Keith was his opponent after seeing that he was using a Platform Machine.
Yami Bakura sensed an evil presence and identified it at the Duel. Seeing Keith controlled, Yami Bakura used the Millennium Ring to break Marik's control. Keith struggled to resist the repossession, but Marik took control long enough for Keith to break the Puzzle. Bakura fell off a rope, knocking Keith out. Bakura then retrieved a piece of the puzzle and sealed a fragment of his soul inside., before returning it to Yugi. Keith regained consciousness and continued to struggle with Marik's mind control, setting the warehouse on fire in his confusion. Unable to remove the piece of the Puzzle connected to the wall, Yugi remained in the burning building to reassemble it. After inserting the last piece, he collapsed and lost consciousness from the heat, but was rescued by Tristan and Joey and transported to the hospital.
Worried about how the puzzle was almost stolen, Yugi took the time to talk with Yami and discovered that Yami had no idea who he once was, as he had lost all his memories. The duo suspected that their new enemy was in possession of a millennium item.
In an attempt to help Yami regain her memories, Yugi asked Téa to spend time with Yami. He asked Téa out, but stopped by Yami just before the appointment. Not expecting this, Yami started yelling in the Puzzle at Yugi, until he was noticed by Téa. On the date, Yami and Téa learned from Ishizu Ishtar that Yami was once an Egyptian pharaoh and that Yugi had to participate in the upcoming Battle City tournament to stop their new enemy.
While talking with Téa, about Duel Monsters at school, Téa asked which card was best for Yugi, assuming that he would choose "Dark Magician". However, Yugi explained that while "Dark Magician" is powerful, "Maha Vailo" is more suitable for him, as it is not the strongest card, but it had a hidden power. He wished he had chosen "Dark Magician", but thought it was better suited for the other Yugi.
The day before the tournament, Yugi and Joey picked up their Duel Disks to compete and the next morning, Yugi finished rebuilding his Deck for the tournament.
Yugi spotted Joey trying to get a rematch with the Rare Hunter, Seeker , who had won his "Red-Eyes Black Dragon". Yugi noticed that his robes were the same ones that Bandit Keith wore, while he was possessed. Seeker refused to face Joey again, but challenges Yugi to a duel. Yugi accepted and switched to Yami , who won and took over Joey's "Red-Eyes Black Dragon". Marik then used Seeker as a puppet to communicate with Yugi. He introduced himself, told Yugi how he was seeking the power of the pharaoh and warned him that there were more rare mortal hunters. Yugi offered Joey to retrieve the "Red Eyes," but Joey refused, saying he would wait until he was a true Duelist before retrieving it.
Yugi was lured into a tent by a harlequin and confronted by the Rare Hunter, Arkana . As Yami Yugi, he faced Arkana in a duel, where the loser's feet were cut off by a jigsaw. (In the dub, they were sent into the shadow realm by energy discs.) Yami won the duel, but then Yugi took over and saved Arkana from the buzzsaw (energy disc in the dub).
At the edge of the canal, while Yugi was talking with Yami about recent events, they were confronted by another Rare Hunter, Strings . Strings was under the total control of Marik and Dueled Yami Yugi using the Egyptian god card, "Slifer the Sky Dragon". Yami won the duel, winning "Slifer the Sky Dragon" thanks to the Ante rule. Kaiba, who had appeared during the duel, challenged Yugi to a duel on the spot, but Marik warned Yugi that he was going to take over Joey. Yugi declined Kaiba's challenge because he had to find and save his friend.
As Yami Yugi searched the city for his friends, with Kaiba's help, they defeated the rare Umbra and Lumis hunters twice, gaining enough location cards to qualify for the finals and also located Joey at Domino Pier .
At the Pier, Yugi was forced to Duel Joey, who was possessed by Marik. Each player had their ankles chained to an anchor, which dragged them underwater to drown once the timer reached 0. The only way for either player to save themselves was to defeat their opponent, which would open a box, giving them a key. Yami made the first moves for Yugi, but Yugi insisted that he fight this battle himself. By talking to Joey and using "Red-Eyes Black Dragon" to remind him of his promise to become a true Duelist and even giving him the Millennium Puzzle, Yugi was able to get Joey's subconscious to ignore Marik's commands. Yugi was able to get Joey completely out of Marik's control shortly before forcing himself to lose. With Joey back to normal, Yugi told Marik that he was the real loser in this duel. Yugi let his hit points drop to 0 and collapsed, releasing Joey's key. However, Joey managed to force the Duel into a DRAW , releasing Yugi's key as well. Using the chain, Joey swung to Yugi's side of the field and grabbed his key, before the anchor pulled them both down. It unlocked Yugi, who floated to the surface and was brought to shore by Tristan. Serenity dove in with the other key to save Joey. Joey later apologized and returned the Millennium Puzzle. Yugi thanked Yami for trusting him and Yami said that Yugi had taught him the strength behind the kindness and that one day Yugi would surpass him in every way.
Yugi, Joey, Mai, Téa, Tristan, Duke and Serenity arrived at KaibaCorp Stadium for the final. Yugi was suspicious of finalist Marik, who is under the guise of "Namu," and Bakura, who should be in the hospital. Téa dispelled any suspicion of Namu, informing Yugi of how he saved her, Joey and Bakura earlier. Shortly after Odion Ishtar arrived, posing as Marik, everyone boarded the airship, where the finale was taking place.
As Yugi prepared for the finale in his room, he added "Slifer the Sky Dragon" to his deck, thinking he would need it to fight Marik. He also suspected that Bakura had come into contact with the Millennium Ring again.
Yami Yugi faced Bakura in the first of the quarterfinals on the Stratos Dueling Arena . Yugi's suspicions were confirmed against Yami Bakura . When Bakura was one turn away from winning with "Destiny Board", both Yugis agreed that they should use "Slifer the Sky Dragon" to defeat him. Yami Yugi summoned "Slifer", but Marik changed Bakura's body control from Yami Bakura to Bakura, who was too weak to resist the attack. However, Yami Bakura did not agree with Marik's plan and took control of Bakura's body. He invited Yugi to attack him, refusing to let his host die. Yugi won the duel, knocking Bakura out and leaving him in need of medical attention.
During the intermission before the next duel, Yugi tried unsuccessfully to get Kaiba to make an emergency stop to take Bakura to a doctor. Yugi returned to his room and began to examine his Deck. He was interrupted by Shadi , who explained how the Egyptian god cards were created and why he must stop Marik from getting his hands on them.
Joey defeated Odion, who was still pretending to be Marik and exposed him as a fake. Afterwards, Namu was exposed as the real Marik and Yami Marik took over his body. Marik confronted Yugi, saying that the battle for the pharaoh's power had just begun.
After losing to Kaiba, Ishizu Ishtar told Yugi the history of the Ishtar family and gave him the Millennium Necklace, as he would need the seven Millennium items to retrieve the memories of the pharaoh.
That night, Yugi was awakened by Téa, who reported that Bakura was missing. They found out that he was in a duel with Marik and saw him lose shortly after their arrival.
Virtual world
The airship Battle City was sucked into a mechanical fortress in the sea, by Noah Kaiba . Yugi, Joey, Tristan, Téa, Serenity, Duke, Kaiba and Mokuba came out of the airship, where they were greeted by a projection of the Big Five, who explained that they had been trapped in the virtual world, after failing to trap Kaiba there, during the Legendary Heroes game . For this, they hate Yugi and his friends for helping Kaiba. Having Kaiba as a common enemy, Noah downloaded their minds into his computer system. Using a modified form of Duel Monsters, they planned to confront the gang in order to claim possession of their bodies, so that they could exist in the real world.
The group was then transported to a virtual jungle, where they were given a demonstration of the Deck Master rules . The Big Five then separated the gang, causing holes to appear beneath them.
Yugi was transported to a pond, where he was confronted with Gansley , who had taken the form of "Deepsea Warrior". Before Dueling Gansley, Yugi changed to Yami Yugi, who Gansley identified as "Type-B". During the Duel, Yugi noticed that their Deck Master, Kuriboh was trying to tell them something. As Yami was about to lose, Yugi took over and used Kuriboh's Deck Master effect to save them. Soon after, Yugi collapsed so Yami took control and won the duel.
The Yugis then entered a corridor. Although they knew there were traps behind some of the doors, Yugi went through one, after hearing Téa scream, but was pushed back by an attack. Yami drew Yugi's attention to the star level of the door, so Yugi summoned a higher level monster, "Winged Dragon, Guardian of the Fortress" and launched an attack into the doorway. They entered the doorway and ended up repeating the same process. Realizing that it was because they kept choosing the level 1 door, they started attacking different levels. The last door had the 2000 ATK, level 4 monster, "Flash Assailant", supported by a series of face-down magic or Trap Cards. Yugi used "Heavy Storm" to clear the face-down magic and the effect of "4-Starred Ladybug of Doom" to destroy "Flash Assailant".
Yugi arrived at the scene of Téa's Duel, but was held back by a wall of ice. "Dark Magician" was removed from her Deck and Summoned to Téa's field, after she played "Sage's Stone". Attacking with both "Dark Magician" and "Dark Magician Girl", Téa defeated Crump, making the ice around her disappear. Yugi rushed to her aid and gave her his cloak. Together, they crossed the ice region and entered through a door, taking them to a courtroom, where Joey was Dueling Johnson .
Yugi rightly suspected that Johnson had rigged the outcome of Joey's luck-based cards. Although Noah tried to disqualify Johnson, Joey insisted that they continue the game without rigging. After Joey won, he, Yugi, and Téa exited through another door.
The trio found their way to Duke, Serenity and Tristan's Duel against Nezbitt . After the duel, the gang tried to find Tristan, before the Big Five took his body. They briefly encountered Kaiba and Mokuba, but were attacked by Nezbitt in possession of Tristan's body. The real Tristan in the body of a robot monkey helped them fight the impostor. However, Nezbitt kidnapped Mokuba and Kaiba took off after him, leaving the others to think about what to do with the monkey, not knowing that it was Tristan.
The group took a van to chase Kaiba. On the way, they discovered that the monkey was Tristan after accidentally flipping a switch, allowing him to speak normally.
After watching Kaiba Duel Leichter, Yugi and Téa went with Kaiba to help him find Mokuba. The others tried to follow, but the tunnel disappeared, before they could enter.
Inside the tunnel, Yugi and Téa got separated from Kaiba and found themselves in a simulation of Kaiba's mansion when Seto Kaiba was adopted. Yugi found a picture of Kaiba's father, Gozaburo , with Noah, shortly before he found Kaiba. Noah then showed the three of them a projection from the past, where Gozaburo showed Noah a picture of Seto, who Noah was supposed to be able to compete with to run KaibaCorp.
Noah took Yugi, Téa and Kaiba back to their friends, where they were confronted by the Big Five, now all sharing possession of Tristan's body. Yugi and Joey teamed up for the Duel to reclaim Tristan's body. Although Yugi and Joey won, the Big Five tried to steal their bodies, but Noah took them and Tristan's body before they could.
Since Noah designed the monkey robot, Yugi and his friends have been searching for clues. Yugi pressed a red button, which transported them to a virtual Kaiba Land . From there, the gang took a handcar into a subway and found themselves on the scene of Noah and Seto Kaiba's duel.
Noah won and turned Seto and Mokuba into stone. This drove Yugi crazy and changed to Yami, who accused Noah of foul play, as he had used Mokuba as a shield to help him win. As Yami, Yugi combined his Deck with Seto's and continued the Duel. Noah gradually turned Yugi's friends to stone as Yami Dueled, until none of them were left. Yugi then offered his support to Yami and took him to his soul chamber. Inside, he took Yami to a room containing his recent memories, where all those who had been turned to stone offered their support. Back in the virtual reality, Yami imagined Yugi's friends handing him the cards drawn by "Card of Sanctity". With them, Yami summoned the three "Blue-Eyed White Dragons" of Kaiba to win the Duel against Noah.
After the duel, Noah tried to steal Yugi's body and escape to the real world, but the power of the Millennium Puzzle forced him to return. After Noah found out that Gozaburo had used it, he tried to help everyone escape from the virtual world and took them to a virtual Domino city. The group split up and reunited, minus the Kaibas. After realizing that Noah double-crossed them, Yugi began to blame himself for trusting Noah.
Gozaburo had Yugi and his friends attacked by monsters while they were looking for a way out, but Yugi and Joey fought them by summoning monsters from their decks. Noah, after stealing Mokuba's body and escaping to the real world, staged a missile attack to destroy the fortress, including the servers in the virtual world. After changing his mind, he contacted the group and explained that they had to get out quickly before the virtual world was destroyed.
Noah told them to go to the arcade. Yugi, Duke, and Joey fought more Gozaburo monsters, while Téa, Serenity, and Tristan went there. When Yugi, Duke and Joey arrived at the archway, Noah asked Yugi to go get Seto before returning himself.
Yugi complied and went to the KaibaCorp building, catching Seto shortly after defeating Gozaburo in a duel. Gozaburo took on the form of a monster and chased the two. Noah asked them to jump off the building. With no other option, they complied and woke up in the real world, before hitting the ground.
Yugi, Kaiba and Mokuba ran to escape the fortress before the missile hit and were helped onto the moving airship by Joey and Tristan, shortly before the fortress was destroyed.

Battle City Finals
The KaibaCorp airship took the finalists to the Duel Tower for the Battle City finals. Yugi stopped by Yami Yugi for the Battle Royal to determine the matches and ended up with Kaiba as his opponent.
Yugi tried to stop Joey from Dueling Marik. However, Yami reminded him that Joey had agreed to the duel knowing that it would be a shadow game and that no one could stop such a game. Yugi worried about Joey and wondered if there was anything they could do to help. However, Yami assured Yugi that this was Joey's fight and that he could win with their support. After Joey lost, Yugi yelled that it was a lie. He said that he would not lose Joey at the Shadow Realm . Later, at Joey's bedside, he begged him not to die. Yugi blamed himself, saying he should have Dueled Marik instead. In the hallway, Yugi cried more and considered stopping the duel, but Yami convinced him that they shouldn't give up and let Marik win. Yami had the idea to use the Millenniumpour necklace to see what was going on. He and Yugi then used it to look into the future, where they saw Yami and Joey preparing for Duel.
Yugi Dueled Kaiba in the second semi-final as Yami Yugi. They managed to defeat Kaiba and then found out that Joey was okay much to Yugi's delight. Yugi and Yami won Kaiba's "Obelisk the Tormentor" card with the ante rule.
Yugi and Yami watched Joey Duel Kaiba in a match for third place. They both agreed that Joey was a great Duelist and would have defeated Marik, if their Duel had not been turned into a Shadow Game. Both noticed that the Millennium Puzzle was acting strangely and saw Téa's reflection in it. They left the Duel to find Téa, who was possessed by the original Marik to confront Yami Marik . At the top of the Duel Tower, they found Téa, Marik and Ishizu. Ishizu explained that Téa would be fine and that the good side of Marik still lives in Téa's mind.
Before facing Marik, Kaiba gave Yugi the card, "Fiend's Sanctuary," which Kaiba intended to use against Marik himself. The final duel of Yami Marik and Yami Yugi was a shadow play, where the regular Yugi and Marik were pulled from their bodies and floated beside them in spirit form. Yugi and Marik were bound by their wrists and ankles in the darkness and parts of their bodies disappeared as their "Yami" lost life points. (In the 4kids version, they were gradually engulfed in the shadow realm.) If Yami Yugi lost, Yugi would disappear and the pharaoh would cease to exist because he needed the physical body of a host to sustain himself.
Yugi encouraged Yami throughout the duel. He even urged Yami to pay life points to keep "Fiend's Sanctuary" active, knowing that this would cause part of his body to disappear. Yugi insisted that they had to find a way to win without making the good Marik disappear. However, the good Marik possessed Téa and told Yugi not to hesitate, he is ready to die. He no longer blamed the Yugis for his father's death (In the dubbing, Marik said not to worry about protecting him, he wants to defeat his dark side at all costs).
Yugi was certain that Yami Marik would merge with "The Winged Dragon of Ra" a second time in the Duel and reminded Yami Yugi that if he did it again, he would become a monster and have the weakness of a Monster Card. With this in mind, Yami Yugi managed to use "Ragnarok", which would destroy "Ra". As Yugi wondered if this would make the good Marik disappear, Odion appeared. Since Odion had taken Yami Marik away, his return allowed the regular Marik to regain control of his body and urged Yami to attack. The Yugis continued to use the "Ragnarok" effect, which destroyed Ra and caused Marik and Yami Marik to switch places. With only 1 point of life left, only Yami Marik's eye remained. Marik then surrendered, causing Yami Marik to disappear and Yugi to win the duel.
As the host, Kaiba congratulated Yugi on his victory. (In the dubbing, he added that Yugi only won because Marik surrendered.) Marik informed Yugi that with his dark side gone, the souls of Mai and Bakura would have to be released and gave him "The Winged Dragon of Ra" because of the ante rule . Marik then showed Yugi the hieroglyphs engraved on his back, explaining that the secret of the pharaoh's power is written there, and that whoever holds the three cards of the Egyptian god can unlock this secret. Once his mission was complete, Marik handed the Millennium Rod and Ring to Yugi.
Kaiba announced that he was going to blow up the Duel Tower and gave everyone an hour to evacuate. Yugi and his friends returned to the Battle Ship and found that Mai and Bakura were okay, but there was no sign of the Kaiba brothers on the airship. With the Battle Ship damaged after escaping Noah's fortress and no one able to find the Kaibas, everyone boarded the KaibaCorp helicopter. As they left, they saw that Kaiba and Mokuba had escaped in their Blue-Eyes White Dragon jet .
Back in Domino City, Yugi and his friends said goodbye to the Ishtar family, Duke and Mai. Then, back in Kame Game, Yugi and Yami Yugi assembled a Deck and included the "Red-Eyes Black Dragon" that Joey had given them. At sunrise, the Yugis met Joey in the square for a final duel to conclude their adventure in Battle City.
Doma
Between classes, Yami took control of Yugi's body and jumped out of school to go to the museum, with cards of the Egyptian god to discover his memories. Yugi asked why they were going alone. Yami replied that it would be too depressing to say goodbye and just wants Yugi to walk him home. (In the dubbing, there was no mention of why they were going alone. Instead, Yami said he felt the Egyptain God Cards pulling him toward the museum.) However, Téa, Joey, and Tristan caught up with him outside the museum and reminded him that they were a team. Inside, Yami was holding the Egyptian God Cards against the shelf, but something was holding him back. The group heard a scream and rushed outside, finding a large number of live dueling monsters in the city.
Suspecting that the appearance of the Duel Monsters was caused by Kaiba's holographic technology, they went to KaibaCorp , but could not get past a crowd of reporters.
Later at the Kame Game, while Yugi and his friends were watching Kaiba on TV explaining that he was not responsible, there was a break-in and the Egyptian God's cards were stolen by bikers from Doma . They quickly rushed outside and saw the gods appear in the city. Yugi wondered who could have summoned them because only someone with a connection to the millennium items can summon the Egyptian gods. The thieves then appeared before them, demanding that Yugi follow them if he wanted to get the God cards back. Yugi changed into a Yami and got into a duel with one of them, Gurimo . Gurimo used the soul-stealing card "The Seal of Oriharukon" and was even able to summon "Obelisk the Tormentor" with its power. Yugi still managed to defeat Gurimo, which sealed his soul in the card. Then Yugi took his necklace containing a fragment of the Orichalcos stone. As a reward for his victory, Rafael released the souls of Rex and Weevil, which Gurimo had previously captured using "The Seal of Orichalcos".
On the street, Yugi, Téa, Joey and Tristan found Rex and Weevil and discussed the bikers, who had stolen their souls and Yugi's God cards. Rex and Weevil pretended to agree to help them, but secretly planned to get the God cards for themselves.
After leaving Rex and Weevil, Yugi and his friends met Rebecca Hawkins , who claimed that Yugi was now her boyfriend and took them to the museum to see her grandfather Arthur . After researching the origins of Duel Monsters , Arthur confirmed that Yugi did indeed share a connection with an ancient Egyptian pharaoh and informed them that the pharaoh had saved the world when ancient Egyptian wizards harnessed the powers of real monsters by sealing them in tablets, like Duel. Monsters. He also showed them pictures of what he believed to be Atlantis, showing sculptures of Duel Monsters, proving that the origins of Duel Monsters go back more than 3000 (5000 in the dub) years in Egypt to at least 10000 years in Atlantis. Arthur told them that he believed there was a parallel dimension where the Duel Monsters were real. Since the pharaoh saved the world the last time people conjured these monsters, Arthur thinks that Yugi must save the world this time, since the pharaoh was reborn in him. Not knowing what to do next, Yugi gave Arthur the stone he had taken from Gurimo to test. Outside the museum, to Yugi's embarrassment, Rebecca gave him a kiss before leaving. Shortly before leaving, Yugi thought he heard someone calling for help, but couldn't see him anywhere.
As Yugi fell asleep that night, he heard the voice calling for help again. The millennium puzzle activated and the two Yugis were sent to the room inside the millennium puzzle. They heard the voice calling for help again and tried to find out who it was. They finally found Kuriboh, who led them to a room where they had never been before. They heard the voice again and followed it, causing them to be transported through a vortex to the Duel Monsters Spirit World.
Yugi and Yami found themselves hovering over a castle. They flew there and met Dark Magician Girl, who told them that both worlds were in danger. She explained that both worlds depend on each other for survival, but now a bridge has been opened between the two worlds and the great beast, which feeds on the life force of humans and spirits will consume them all. Yugi and Yami agreed to help them, so Dark Magician Girl took them to three dragons trapped in crystal. According to the legend, three warriors should be able to free them. Believing that Yugi was one of the warriors, she asked the Yugis to pull a sword out of one of the dragons. Yugi and Yami pulled out the sword, freeing the dragon, Timaeus .
Yugi woke up in his bed soon after. He saw a strange light phenomenon trapping monsters outside. He ran to the square to see what it was and met his friends there. The monsters were absorbed into a crystal, which shattered, revealing an eye, which shot a tornado at Yugi. However, Yugi's Duel Disk began to glow when the card, "The Eye of Timaeus" appeared on it. Using it, Yugi summoned Timaues to attack and destroy the eye. The Dark Magician Girl then appeared next to Yugi and informed him that the battle was just beginning.
The group flew to San Francisco, where a limousine was provided to take them to Industrial Illusions headquarters. Inside the limo, Yugi noticed that "The Eye of Timaeus" was lighting up as Kaiba threw Critias elsewhere. However, the limo took the group into a desert and the driver abandoned them at a gas station. At the station, they were approached by another biker gang looking for trouble, but Mai Valentine appeared on a motorcycle and fought off the bikers, causing a fire. Tristan drove Yugi, Joey and Téa in the limo away from the station before the gas pump caused an explosion. Mai also escaped on her motorcycle and drove away. The limo broke down, while still in the desert, leaving Yugi and his friends stranded. Using Téa's femininity while the boys hid, they were able to hitch a ride from a truck driver to Industrial Illusions.
When the group finally arrived at Industrial Illusions headquarters, they were locked in by Mai, who revealed that she was with Doma and had captured Pegasus' soul in a "Seal of Orichalcos" card, before challenging Joey to a duel. During the duel, Yugi's "The Eye of Timaeus" card lit up again as Joey was sent into the spirit world to free Hermos . Fearing that Mai would lose, Valon interrupted the duel and the Doma members fled.
Showing the card to his friends, Yugi received a package from Industrial Illusions, containing a videotape and the card, "Illusion's Key". He was initially reluctant to watch the video, remembering the last one Pegasus had sent him. After deducing that Pegasus cannot seal souls, since he no longer has the Millennium Eye, Yugi and his friends watched the tape. Pegasus offered some explanation of recent events, but since it was too risky to leave the information on tape, he asked Yugi to meet him in person and arranged a jet for Yugi and his friends to come to California and bring the "key to the illusion" with them.
Yugi and his friends were then joined by Duke, Rex, Weevil and Kaiba. Using the "Illusion's Key" card, Yugi was able to open a secret room, where they encountered a holographic recording of Pegasus. Pegasus told them about Doma's involvement in historical events and told Yugi where to find an exclusive card, which he would need later. They found the card, "Legend of Heart," though blank at the time, in the room. Although Kaiba decided not to stay with Yugi and his friends, they correctly guessed that he had the other legendary dragon, "Fang of Critias".
Duke led the gang to Arthur Hawkins' house to look for clues as to what to do next. By the time they got there, Arthur had been kidnapped and the house blown up. Rebecca threw herself around Yugi and explained what had happened. The group went to Arthur's mobile home and discussed what had happened. Rebecca returned the Oriharukon stone that Yugi had lent to Arthur. While the others prepared something to eat, Yugi and Rebecca went outside to talk. Rebecca showed Yugi a map and a note from Rafael that she found after the explosion. Rafael's note told Yugi to come to Death Valley alone . (In the dubbing, he told Yugi to go if he wanted to see Arthur again.) Later that night, Yugi borrowed Rebecca's horse, Copernicus , to go.
Yugi Dueled Rafael as Yami Yugi to Death Valley, but still accompanied Yami in spirit form. Yugi was relieved when Rafael said he had no intention of playing "The Seal of Orichalcos" in this Duel. However, Rafael used "Exchange" to give the card to Yugi later. Yugi urged Yami not to use this card, no matter what, and Yami agreed. However, they reached a point where Yami felt he would lose if he did not play the Seal. Despite Yugi's objections, Yami played it and Yugi's spirit form left him alone.
Yugi was unable to contact Yami for the rest of the duel, as he was trapped behind the seal. He tried in vain to beg him not to sacrifice his monsters, including "Dark Magician Girl," to whom they had made a promise. Yami continued to lose the Duel and was about to lose his soul to "The Seal of Orichalcos". Using the power of the Millennium Puzzle, Yugi broke the seal that held him and reappeared next to Yami. Since "The Seal of Orichalcos" only takes one soul, Yugi pushed Yami aside and let the seal take him instead.
Yami went to the Stone Wilderness, where good and evil spirits wander, in hopes of contacting Yugi. He managed to find Yugi and apologized for what happened. Without Yugi, Yami said the darkness inside him began to grow. He was afraid that Rafael was right about him being evil and was afraid to have his memories (this may not be true because he was easily manipulated by Rafael's words to be a lie of Dartz only to get his soul or be influenced by the Orichalcos himself). Yugi reminded Yami that he had been locked up. Yami tried to apologize again, but Yugi said he did not want his pity. Yugi asked if Yami had only come here to demoralize himself. (In the dubbing, he said that if Yami is really evil, there is only one thing to do). A dueling disk appeared on Yugi's arm and he challenged Yami to a duel. Yugi knew that he would have to Duel Yami sooner or later and if Yami's heart became dark or engulfed in the darkest abyss, Yami will lose. (In the dubbing, Yugi said that Yami did not deserve to be a part of this world and had to pay for what he had done). Yami reluctantly agreed to the duel.
Both Yugi drew the same cards in the same order, so Yugi used "Sangan" to shuffle his Deck and "Card Destructionwhich never cared about anyone's suffering because his pride got in the way and proceeded to make monster sacrifices that it is thanks to Yami's carelessness that he can use this strategy to wreak his own revenge. He managed to counter Yugi's strategy with "Divine Wind" and win. Yugi was delighted that Yami won and said that by defeating him, Yami had defeated the darkness in his heart and the influence of Orichalcos that had corrupted him, which meant that Yugi had planned this all along and had never been under the influence of the evil card. Before disappearing again, he urged Yami not to give up and said that he would always be with him.
When Kaiba and Yami were in a duel with Dartz, the leader of Doma, Dartz summoned four "Mirror Knight Tokens". When Kaiba tried to destroy them, he instead had their helmets broken, revealing that they had taken the form of people whose souls had been lost to "The Seal of Orichalcos," including Yugi, Joey, Mai and Pegasus. Dartz claimed that the destruction of the tokens would result in the destruction of their souls. The "Mirror Knight" Yugi tried to resist when Dartz made him attack Yami. Yami refused to attack any of the tokens because it would kill his friends. Kaiba was convinced that nothing would happen if the tokens were destroyed and attacked Joey's, but Yugi's used his effect to block the attack at the cost of his shield. Yami had another opportunity to destroy the tokens. He was reluctant, but Yugi insisted that Yami attack and not worry about him, as he has a more important mission to focus on. (In the dubbing, Yugi said he would be fine.) However, Yami still refused to attack. After playing "Orichalcos Tritos", the "Mirror Knights" were unable to challenge Dartz and he asked Yugi to attack Yami. Finally, Kaiba had the opportunity to destroy the tokens. Yami tried to stop him, but Yugi insisted that he would be fine and Kaiba continued.
Yugi's soul was trapped in a bubble sucked into the Great Leviathan . The souls of people, who were recently taken by "The Seal of Orichalcos", were floating in bubbles near him. After Yami defeated Dartz, the Legendary Dragons, now in their Legendary Knight forms, released the souls of the chosen Duelists; Yugi, Kaiba and Joey. Yami informed Yugi that the knights had freed him and that Dartz had disappeared into a vortex after the Duel.
Roland alerted Yugi, Kaiba and their friends about Atlantis rising from the sea. Yugi, Kaiba and Joey chose to travel through the wormhole used by Dartz, suspecting that it would lead them to Atlantis to confront him. Téa objected because they might walk directly into Dartz's trap, Yugi convinced her that they should go save the other lost souls. Inside the temple where the duel took place, the millennium puzzle began to glow and led Yugi to the location of the Egyptian god's maps. However, they were helpless as Dartz had already sucked their energy into the Leviathan. Yugi caught up with Joey and Kaiba and returned their legendary dragon cards before the three entered the wormhole. The trio emerged on Atlantis and Yugi switched to Yami. They discovered that Dartz had left his body and combined with the Great Leviathan, to make up for not getting the souls of the chosen Duelists.
As Yami, he, Kaiba, Joey and an army of Duel Monster Spirits fought Leviathan. However, Leviathan's tendrils pulled the three chosen Duelists inside. Yugi appeared next to Yami and suggested that perhaps they could fight back by calling the others trapped inside. Following Yugi's advice, Yami called on everyone else to focus on the light in their hearts and pass that strength to him. Using it, he summoned the Egyptian gods and freed the chosen duelists from the leviathan. Thinking that the gods might need his help, Yami returned control of Yugi's body to Yugi and flew to the gods in spirit form. Yugi cheered for Yami as he watched him and the gods fight and defeat Leviathan.
Yami returned to Yugi on Atlantis just as it began to sink. As Yugi was about to leave through the wormhole after Joey and Kaiba, Yami called him back and the duo were confronted by Dartz and The Great Leviathan in a smaller form. After Timaeus failed to destroy the Leviathan, Yami advised Yugi to run, but Yugi refused to leave and helped Yami argue against Dartz' ideology. Leviathan turned into a black whirlpool and surrounded Yami. Yugi tried to help Yami, but Yami insisted that this was his fight and that he had to prove that the darkness in his heart was gone. As he focused on this, the Leviathan disappeared.
Yugi and Yami saw that the perverted side of Dartz was now gone, as were Ironheart , Chris and Skye . Ironheart and Chris thanked the Yugis and told them to return through the portal where a new future awaited them.
Yugi then washed ashore, where they were greeted by Dark Magician Girl and the legendary knights, who thanked them for their help. Yugi's friends, who had escaped from Dartz's temple in Kaiba's helicopter, flew out to greet him, relieved that he had survived.
Grand Championship
Yugi, Kaiba and all of Yugi's friends prepared for Kaiba's ultimate tournament, the KC-1 Grand Prix Championship. The winner of the tournament would face Yugi Muto in an attempt to claim the title of Duel Monsters World Champion.
On the opening day, as Yugi and his friends watch a duel between Rick and the KC DuelTek 760, a hacker traps all duelists and spectators inside the makeshift electronic stadium. The CPU opponent's level has been changed to its highest difficulty level, and the only way for everyone to escape is to defeat the CPU in a duel. Rick had mostly normal Dragon monsters and almost no Spell or Trap cards in his Deck. Yugi turns into Yami and takes over, using "Heart of the Underdog" - a card Yugi had given Rick - and combined it with the effects of "Spirit Ryu" to win and free everyone.
Yugi didn't do much Dueling this season. He cheered on Joey and Rebecca throughout the tournament. He fought a duel and defeated Vivian Wong , so she could heal Solomon Muto's back.
Yami faced Leon von Schroeder , who took the alias of Leon Wilson, in the final. Leon acted differently during the Title Bout and Yugi found out that Leon only wanted to duel and defeat him to gain the respect of his family that Zigfried could not earn in his youth. Leon played an illegal card, "Golden Castle of Stromberg", which forced Yugi to discard half of the cards in his Deck every turn of Leon and also infected a virus in the KaibaCorp computer system. Yami discovered a weakness in the card; he could not discard half the cards in his Deck, having only one card left. He managed to destroy it and undo the virus. With "Golden Castle of Stromberg" defeated, Yugi continued the Duel and played several Spell and Trap Cards before landing the final blow using "Dark Magician," "Necromancy," and "Wave-Motion Diffusion" to win.
Memories of Pharaoh
efore going to Egypt to finally unlock the Pharaoh's memories, Yugi wanted to learn as much as possible. He asked his grandfather to tell him about his adventure where he retrieved the millennium puzzle from the tomb of the nameless pharaoh. He was sad to learn that grandfather did not know the way back to the tomb, but grandfather advised him to stay away. Obsessed with the cards of the Egyptian god, grandpa begged Yugi to leave them with him rather than return them. Yugi reminded him how the pharaoh would need them and grandpa apologized. Before saying good night, Grandpa said his own adventure was over and assured Yugi that he was the only one with the power to help the pharaoh get back everything he had lost. Holding onto the Pharaoh's legacy is no small task, he said and advised Yugi to face each challenge as if it were a game.
As Yugi slept, he dreamed that he was talking with Yami, reflecting on how the encounter had changed their lives.
Yugi was awakened by hearing Rex and Weevil break in to steal the Egyptian god's cards. They grabbed a bag, not knowing that it also contained the Millennium Objects, and Yugi ran after them. By the time Yugi caught up with them, they had been knocked out by Yami Bakura , who had taken back the Millennium Ring . Bakura returned the items and divine cards to Yugi, but insisted on keeping the ring for himself. He tried to assure Yugi that they had the same goal; to bring the seven elements of the millennium to the millennium stone. Taking control of Yugi's body, Yami ordered Bakura to stop poisoning Yugi's mind. Before parting ways, Bakura declared that to solve the riddle of the pharaoh's memory, they would play the ultimate Shadow Game .
At the airport as Yugi was preparing to board his flight, he unexpectedly met Joey, Téa and Tristan. He told them that they didn't have to come, but they insisted that they wouldn't miss it for anything.
At the airport in Egypt, Yugi and his friends were met by Ishizu , Marik and Odion Ishtar , who took them to an underground cave in the desert, where the stone tablets of the museum had been moved. As Yami held the cards of the Egyptian god against the tablet, his spirit was sucked out of Yugi's body and into the world of memory. The part of Yami Bakura's soul that had been secretly sealed in the millennium puzzle was also sucked into the world of memory, taking with it the rest of Yami Bakura's spirit, from Bakura . Yugi reported that Yami was no longer present in his heart or in the Puzzle.
Shadi appeared and confirmed that the pharaoh had left Yugi. He informed them that the pharaoh went to a world of his memories, which was created 3000 years ago from the experiences of the pharaoh. Fearing that Yami was in the same danger that sealed her in the millennium puzzle the first time, Yugi, Joey, Téa and Tristan begged Shadi to let them go to the memory world to help Yami. Shadi explained that they had to go through a door in the millennium puzzle to get there. Again, Yugi insisted on going alone, but his friends would not allow it. Using the Millennium Key, Shadi led the four of them inside the puzzle, where they began to search for the right door in the maze.
Yugi and company searched the inside of the Puzzle for a long time, but to no avail. Behind one of the doors, they found Yami Bakura who turned into a monster and attacked them. After escaping, Shadi informed them that it was the pharaoh's enemy in its true form. Since the labyrinth reflected the heart of the pharaoh, Yugi finally started to feel it shaking while Yami was in danger. (In the dubbing, the temperature changed as the pharaoh's emotions changed.) Yugi realized that instead of calling the pharaoh, they had to wait for the pharaoh to call them, so he asked everyone to sit together and focus. This caused a maze to open a door to the world of memory.
Yugi, Joey, Téa and Tristan entered the ancient Egyptian memory world, where Yugi no longer had the millennium puzzle. Although they looked out of place, no one noticed them. They soon learned that other people could not see them and that trying to touch the solid matter would gradually push them through. Unbeknownst to them, they had entered an RPG played by Yami Bakura and Yami Yugi, where they were acting as non-playable characters.
The group found Bobasa , who like them could not be seen by most other people, but unlike them, he was able to touch objects. The pursuit of Bobasa led them to find the priest Seto rescuing Kisara. Recognizing in him the guy who looked like Kaiba on the tablet, they knew he worked for the pharaoh and followed him to the palace . Unlike other objects, they discovered that they could not get through the palace gates. Bobasa reappeared and offered to help them.
The five of them fell asleep outside the palace until the gates finally opened when the pharaoh chased Thief Bakura on horseback, accompanied by the monster Ka Diabound and Slifer the Sky Dragon respectively . Yugi, Joey, Téa and Tristan ran after them and finally caught up with the pharaoh after he fell off his horse after Slifer's defeat. They were happy to find that the pharaoh could see them, as he asked Yugi with surprise if it was really him. Taking the pharaoh's hand, Yugi was able to give him some of his strength, allowing him to summon Ra's winged dragon to fight the Diabound of Bakura.
Ra first defeated Diabound, but Yami Bakura, playing the RPG, used one of his Hourglass tokens to go back in time to a few minutes before. This time after Slifer's defeat, Diabound's attack shattered the ground beneath the pharaoh, causing him to fall into a chasm before Yugi and his friends could reach him. Yugi's friends briefly encountered Thief Bakura before being called by Bobasa to hide. Téa feared that Pharaoh had lost his soul, since he had just lost a Shadow Game, but Yugi reminded everyone that the world is built on Pharaoh's memories and since he still existed, he had to be okay.
The next day, Yugi, Joey, Téa, Tristan and Bobasa searched for the pharaoh along the Nile. There they found Mana, who could see them and mistook Yugi for the pharaoh. When they started talking about looking for the pharaoh after Bobasa found his cloak, Mana realized that Yugi was not the pharaoh. She quickly learned that they were her friends and joined their search party. The group was about to be attacked by Thief Bakura's men soon after, but Mana used her magic to lift the river and sweep away the attackers. As they continued their search, Mana explained how only half of her spells worked, but Yugi told her how much she resembled the "Dark Magician Girl" card, and that if she continued to practice, he was sure Mana could become as strong as the "Dark Magician Girl." Finally, the group found the pharaoh on the beach.
Yugi and her friends learned that the thief Bakura had taken the Millennium Puzzle from the pharaoh and was after the other items as well. The pharaoh told them that he had only recovered a fragment of his childhood memory and that no one would tell him his real name. The pharaoh finally rode off with Mana and asked Yugi and the others to return to their world and not get involved.
Tristan, who had secretly been possessed by Yami Bakura suggested that the pharaoh was deliberately causing himself to lose his memory in order to forget information that he knew would require someone to bring back the evil that he had locked away. Yugi and the others agreed that it must be his name, which had been erased from history. Yugi thought that the pharaoh must have used it as a password to lock out Zorc's necrophages. Since the pharaoh was going to relive his battle with this creature, Yugi realized that without knowing its name, the pharaoh would lose this time. Determined to find out the pharaoh's name before the battle, they decided to go to the palace to see if there was any trace of it.
This time at the palace, thinking to himself, Yugi asked the pharaoh to let them in, and discovered that he could pass through the palace gates. Inside the courtyard, he suggested that they split up to search and meet again in an hour. While they were searching, Yami Bakura used another hourglass token to temporarily freeze time.
The five of them met up again, discovering that Bobasa had eaten all the food in a storage room. Despite this, he was still hungry and could not move without eating. Tristan, who was still possessed, argued that Bobasa was no help and that they should leave him. However, Yugi said that he had helped them find the pharaoh. The others agreed and helped Bobasa find something to eat. After finding some grapes, they pulled him outside and let him eat them. The grapes eventually filled Bobasa, who said that this allowed him to fulfill their wish. His body swelled, allowing him to float in the air. He invited them to ride on his back, so that he could take them to see the name of the pharaoh. He took them to the pharaoh's tomb in the Valley of the Kings.
The inside of the tomb was full of traps. Remembering grandfather's story about visiting the tomb, Yugi knew that traps worked and was able to guide his friends to safety. They reached the room where Grandpa found the millennium puzzle, but couldn't find any clues there, so they started looking for another room.
Joey accidentally hit a hidden switch, unlocking a passageway. Possessed, Tristan ran ahead of everyone, but found the room empty. To everyone's surprise, Tristan read the hieroglyphics on the floor stating that they said that whoever solves the Millennium Puzzle must return the wish granted to them to succeed. Yugi claimed that what he wished for could never be returned, but after some cajoling, he admitted that he wished for friends. Téa and Tristan were touched, having never heard that before. Tristan pushed Yugi onto an eye patch on the floor and pushed Joey and Téa onto another, where he joined them. The floor, except for the two eyes and a connecting beam, gave way, leaving the two eyes balanced on a stone needle under the middle of the beam. (In the dubbing, a shadow pit is added under the platform. In Japanese, it's just a long drop.) The beam turned, positioning Yugi's eye at a door to another room. Yugi was reluctant to go through because it would have meant losing his friends. After calling Yugi weak, Tristan jumped from the platform to the door, causing the platform to become unbalanced. Joey and Téa jumped off the platform and grabbed onto the ledge. Yugi ran after them and jumped on Joey. The three of them climbed up and entered the room.
Inside the room, they found the name written on a wall. Unable to read it, they just memorized the hieroglyphics. While looking for Tristan, they spotted him and went out and followed him.
Yugi, Joey and Téa were taken to a room with two sides connected by a bridge. On the other side stood Tristan who revealed that he was possessed by Yami Bakura and took on his appearance. At the same time, the room shook as Zorc was about to be resurrected elsewhere. Yami Bakura laughed that they were not going to leave with the pharaoh's name, then formed a dueling disk on his arm and challenged Yugi to a duel.
Bakura explained that their Decks will be created from images in their minds and the order of the cards will only be revealed once they draw. Duel Disks and Decks then appeared on their arms. Bakura told Yugi that this would be a Shadow Game, so losing would mean losing his soul. (In the dubbing, Bakura instead said that it had been a while since they had duelled, but this time Yugi didn't have Yami Yugi to bail him out.) very different from his real Deck.
Yugi intended to level up "Silent Swordsman LV0" under the protection of "Marshmallon" and "Marshmallon Glasses". However, Bakura forced "Marshmallon" into attack mode, leaving Yugi to defend it as well. Whenever Bakura got the upper hand, he often mocked Yugi for not being able to win without Yami Yugi. Bakura used "Cursed Twin Dolls" to suppress his own graveyard, filling his field with ghosts and "Counterbalance" to get players to send cards from their Deck to the Graveyard equal to the number of cards on the field, including ghosts each turn. Since Bakura no longer had a Graveyard, it was not affected. Yugi used "Aria From Beyond" to use "Spirit Sword of Sealing" to temporarily remove "Silent Swordsman" from play. Bakura's strategy left Yugi with a card in his Deck, "Gandora the Dragon of Destruction," which he drew and summoned. Using its effect, "Gandora" destroyed and removed from play all other monsters on the field, then destroyed itself. This disabled the effect of "Spirit Sword of Sealing" and sent "Silent Swordsman" back into play. Yugi used "Silent Swordsman", with 4500 ATK to attack and defeat Bakura.
Bakura said he couldn't believe he lost to a "container". Before giving up control of Tristan's body, he laughed that Zorc had always been unleashed and that they couldn't win if the pharaoh died. After explaining to Tristan what had just happened, the room began to collapse. The quartet exited through a tunnel leading them to the side of a cliff.
After going down the cliff, Yugi and his friends were attacked by hooded horsemen. Like how Yugi and Yami Bakura were able to form Duel Disks, Yugi realized that if they were focused enough, their thoughts could become real. With no time to fight the horsemen, they imagined that they could fly and set out to find the pharaoh.
Just as Zorc was about to throw a fireball at the pharaoh, Yugi and his friends arrived. Zorc threw the fireball at them instead, saying they should have stayed in their own world. The group dodged the attack, but saw some of the Bakura soldiers approaching. Preparing to fight, Yugi conjured a Duel Disk and the Deck he and Atem had built. He summoned the "black magician," whom Pharaoh now recognized as Mahad . Joey, Téa, Tristan and Mana, who were in the palace, summoned more monsters to fight the soldiers.
With the Monster Spirits fighting Zorc and the soldiers, Yugi and his friends gathered around the pharaoh. They told him that they had seen his name and remembered what it looked like, but they were unable to read it. However, after seeing the pharaoh's cartouche, Tea suggested that they concentrate on making the hieroglyphs appear on it. They all held their hands over the cartouche and tried this. Zorc tried to stop them by throwing another fireball in their direction, but Seto Kaiba appeared and used "Ring of Defense" to block the attack. Zorc launched another attack destroying the ring. Yugi and company managed to survive with the name engraved on the cartridge. The pharaoh declared that his name was Atem. Knowing this, he was able to revive the Egyptian gods and combine them into The creator god of light, Horakhty , who attacked and destroyed Zorc.
Both Yugi and Atem found it odd to have different names at first, having shared an identity since Yugi solved the puzzle. Yugi said he felt a little lonely, but that was okay. Even though their names are different, he said they will always be a team. After saying goodbye to the priest Seto, Atem reached the end of his memories, he could no longer exist in the memory world, so he joined Yugi, Joey, Téa, Tristan and Kaiba to leave through an opening in the sky.
Yugi and the others woke up in the cave from which they had entered the pharaoh's memory world. Yugi discovered that Atem still resided in his body and received the Millennium Eye from Kaiba, who said he would need it. Before they could question Kaiba about how he got it, they were interrupted by the appearance of Bakura, who was no longer possessed by Yami Bakura. On their way out, the Yugis took the millennium ring from Bakura and found the scales and the millennium key, left by Shadi.
Ceremonial battle
The Ishtars guided Yugi and his friends to the Millennium Stone Shrine; The last home of the Pharaoh. They went on a boat, where Yugi met Duke, Grandpa and Mokuba. On the boat, Marik told Yugi that Atem would have to lose in a ceremonial battle in order to continue. Joey and Kaiba both proposed to Duel Atem, but Yugi declined their offers in favor of Dueling Atem himself. He thought it was something he and Atem needed. Angrily, Kaiba showed Yugi a briefcase of cards and said that if he was going to duel, he might as well use a real Deck, but Yugi again refused, wanting to use his and Atem's cards.
The night before they arrived at the shrine, Yugi worked on his Deck. Téa entered Yugi's room and admitted that she didn't want Atem to leave and asked what Atem thought. However, Atem had hidden in his soul room to give Yugi privacy while he built his Deck. As he built the Deck, Yugi reflected on how solving the Millennium Puzzle had changed his life. Once he finished, he gave Atem privacy to build his Deck.
The next day, everyone arrived at the shrine. It was the best time for the duel because Zorc had just been defeated, Ishizu assured them, and said that the pharaoh would stay at that moment if they didn't take the chance. Yugi placed the objects of the millennium in the millennium stone . This caused the Eye of Wdjat to scan it for the pharaoh's soul and split them into two bodies. Yugi and Atem moved to opposite sides of the cave and prepared for the duel.
Atem chose not to hold back and quickly summoned the three Egyptian gods. Using "Valkyrion the Magna Warrior" in combination with "Magnet Force" and predicting Atem's movements, Yugi was able to redirect the explosions of "Slifer the Sky Dragon" towards the gods, lowering their ATK and eventually destroying them. Yugi and Atem continued to fight using cards they had both used together before. When Atem summoned "Dark Magician" and "Dark Magician Girl", Yugi fought them using cards like he used against Yami Bakura and played "", predicting that Atem would use "Monster Reborn". Once the magicians were defeated, Atem attempted to revive "Slifer the Sky Dragon" using "Monster Reborn," but Yugi revealed that he had selected this card with "Gold Sarcophagus" and cancelled his Yugi reluctantly attacked Atem directly with "Silent Magician," winning the Duel.
With the duel on Yugi cried. He said he was weak and that he had always followed Atem, wanting to be as strong as him. However, Atem said that Yugi had the strength of tenderness, which Yugi had also taught him. Yugi called Atem "the other me," but Atem said that he was no longer another Yugi and Yugi Muto is now himself and no one else. (In the dubbing, while Yugi was crying, he said that he had been so focused on the duel that he forgot what it meant to win. However, Atem said that Yugi had opened the door for him, so that he could finally rest where he belonged and that they had fulfilled their destiny. Yugi said he would miss Atem, but Atem said they will never truly be apart because the gift of kindness Yugi gave him and the courage he gave Yugi will bind them forever).
The Eye of Wdjat then began to glow and upon hearing Atem speak his name, he opened the door to the spirit world. Yugi and his friends tried to convince Atem to stay. After Joey convinced Téa that Pharaoh had to leave, Yugi said he would never forget Atem (In the dubbing, Yugi said it's like they always say "That's your move!"). Once the door closed, the room began to shake. Yugi and the others all ran outside as the shrine collapsed, burying the millennium items with it.
Yugi, Joey, Téa, Tristan then flew to Japan and Yugi received a hug from Rebecca at the airport. Later, when he met up with his friends, he thought that this was not the story of the pharaoh; Everyone has their own story and even though one has just ended, theirs is just beginning.

Yu-Gi-Oh! GX
Jaden Yuki meets him on the way to the Duel Academy registration. Yugi gives Jaden the "Winged Kuriboh" card. In the Japanese version, he says that the card brings luck. In the English dubbing, he says that he feels that the card belongs to Jaden. Yugi's Deck is displayed at the Duel Academy. Later, it is stolen by Dimitri, who fights with Jaden. During the duel, Dimitri started to imitate Yugi and a shadowy figure of Yugi appeared behind him. Then, the Deck returned.
In his duel with Gravekeeper's Chief, Jaden mentioned that Yugi had won many Shadow Duels. As Lyman Banner gave a history lesson, he mentioned Yugi and Kaiba as the best Duelists of their generation and showed drawings of them to the class. One of the girls in the class says that they are among the most beautiful, and another girl calls them dreamboats. During Jaden's duel with the Dark Magician Girl , Bastion Misawa and Zane Truesdale state that Yugi is the only duelist who has the "Dark Magician Girl" card, which confuses them as to who Jaden is up against.
When Jaden visits the Kame Game store during the school trip, Solomon Muto states that Yugi has gone on another trip and doesn't know when he'll return. While Jaden is fighting T-Bone , Jaden gives T-Bone some words of wisdom, which Solomon Muto believes to be exactly what Yugi would have said.
While Bob Banter is caught spying on Alexis Rhodes, he distracts Jaden, Syrus and Hassleberry, saying "Hey look! It's Yugi", so he escapes.
When Jaden confronts Frantz, who has stolen a copy of "The Winged Dragon of Ra", Pegasus compares Jaden to Yugi.
During one of the Aster Phoenix flashbacks, Pegasus mentions that Yugi is "Number 1" in his top five duelists, with Kaiba as number 2, Joey as number 3, Aster as number 4 and Jesse Anderson as number 5.
In Jaden's senior year, the person who scored the most graduation points on the exam received a copy of Yugi's deck, excluding the divine cards. Chazz Princeton , Alexis Rhodes and Syrus Truesdale qualified, but declined the prize in favor of their own decks. During the graduation party, Jaden is led by Winged Kuriboh into the room containing Yugi's deck. Yugi appears and sends Jaden back in time to Duel his younger self.
Taking place some time before the Waking the Dragons arc, Yugi won Battle City V2 at one point and had a dream where Kuriboh told him that he would meet someone and have to duel. Soon after, Yugi ran into Jaden Yuki , who had been sent back in time by Yugi's future self. Jaden showed Yugi a "Winged Kuriboh" card, which he said Yugi had given him and that helped him to come here. Yugi saw that Jaden's "Winged Kuriboh" looked like his own "Kuriboh", but had no knowledge of ever meeting Jaden or giving him a card. He told Jaden about his dream and asked if Jaden was there for the duel.
