Ymir was a graduate of the 104th Training Corps and a former member of the Survey Corps.
She had the ability to transform into the Jaw Titan. She possessed knowledge about the true nature of the Titans as well as the history of the Outside World. Of her own free will, she followed Reiner Braun and Bertolt Hoover to the land of Marley, where she was eventually devoured to pass on her power as a Titan Shifter to Porco Galliard.

Appearance
Human Form
Ymir was a tall young woman, towering over most of her female comrades, which gave her a haughty demeanor. She had golden, slightly slanted eyes that were quite intimidating. When Keith Shadis reviewed the new recruits, he passed by Ymir without a word. According to another instructor, Keith could read the expressions of his recruits. Those ignored during this initiation had a look that indicated they did not need to be broken—in other words, they had already faced horrors. Ymir's gaze reflected her past, which had significantly hardened her.
As for her hair, Ymir had short brown hair (thicker than in the manga), tied into a ponytail that reached her neck, with two strands falling over her forehead. She also had a few freckles on her face. Despite her advanced age, Ymir retained the body she had before being transformed into a Titan. Finally, regarding her facial features, she had delicate traits and a relatively strong jawline.
Primary Titan
In her "pure" Titan form, Ymir closely resembled her Titan Shifter form, with a few exceptions. Her teeth were square rather than sharp, her skin was darker, and she lacked claws.
Ymir's Titan stood at 5 meters tall. Having inherited the Jaw Titan (also called the "Dancing Titan" or "Acrobat Titan" by fans due to its speed and agility), she was the smallest of the Nine Titans. Her Titan was also significantly smaller than most Pure Titans, granting her exceptional agility and speed. She had straight brown hair, small black eyes that gave her a frightening appearance, and a body disproportionate to her head—unlike other Titan Shifters such as the Colossal Titan.
The offensive features of Ymir's Titan aligned with those of the Jaw Titan. Her claws served as both powerful combat weapons and a means of clinging to any surface. Additionally, she had sharp teeth capable of breaking even the hardest materials. Before inheriting the Jaw Titan, her Titan form had normal teeth, similar to other Titans. Ymir's Jaw Titan was built for swift, relentless attacks, making it the fastest Titan known to date. Unlike most of the Nine Titans, which reflect their user’s physical traits, the Jaw Titan did not bear any resemblance to its wielder, lacking both feminine and personal characteristics.
Personality
At first glance, Ymir appeared indifferent to others, coming across as selfish, opportunistic, and cynical, often displaying arrogance toward her comrades. She sought to take advantage of situations for personal gain, such as when she helped Sasha merely to place her in her debt. She was highly observant and could accurately discern the truth about those around her.
However, Ymir's personality was far more complex. As the story unfolded, her past was revealed, showing that her arrogance was a defense mechanism—a mask to conceal her vulnerabilities. In reality, Ymir hid her altruism behind claims of self-interest, even when risking her life for others. For example, when she kidnapped Christa to take her to safety in Marley, she insisted that she acted out of selfishness to protect herself. In truth, she did this to persuade Christa to follow her, knowing that going to Marley would lead to her inevitable death. Her sole goal was to ensure Christa's escape from the catastrophe about to unfold on Paradis.
Ymir disapproved of those who denied their true selves. This was evident when she reprimanded Sasha for suppressing her regional accent or when she pushed Christa to embrace her real identity rather than hiding. This belief stemmed from her own past in Marley, where she was tortured and beaten before being turned into a Titan. After regaining her human form, Ymir vowed to live with pride, holding her freedom high as a form of defiance against those who had persecuted her. Over time, she revealed her caring and protective side, especially in her relationship with Historia Reiss (Christa Lenz). When she followed Reiner Braun and Bertolt Hoover, it was out of a sense of duty and to repay the debt she owed them, even though it meant certain death. Ymir adhered firmly to her principles and values.
Personal History
As a child, Ymir was taken in by an unknown man, possibly a priest. This man and his associate selected her from a group of orphans and brought her to an isolated chapel, where she was falsely presented as a descendant of the royal family. Despite having no real connection to royalty, she was worshiped by her followers until the Marleyan authorities arrested her along with those who believed in the deception.
She and the other cult members were then exiled to Paradis, where they were injected with Titan serum and transformed into Pure Titans. Ymir wandered aimlessly for about 60 years until, in the year 845, she devoured Marcel Galliard, a Marleyan Warrior, thereby inheriting the Jaw Titan and regaining her human form. Afterward, she entered the Walls, living for some time in Wall Sina, where she survived by stealing and observing humans. During this period, she overheard a conversation among the members of the Order of the Walls, learning about Historia Reiss. Fascinated by her, Ymir set out to find her and eventually joined the military.
Ilse Langner, a member of the Survey Corps who bore a resemblance to Ymir, once encountered a Titan that identified itself as one of the "Subjects of Ymir." This Titan mistook Ilse for Ymir, bowing before her and addressing her as "Ymir-sama." Ilse’s notes on this encounter were later discovered by Hange Zoë, serving as one of the first clues to Ymir’s true nature.
History
104th Training Corps Arc
Ymir graduated from the 104th Training Corps, ranking outside the top 10. Historia believed Ymir deserved to be in the top 10 more than she did, but it was implied that Ymir had used some unknown means to ensure that Historia took her place. It was suggested that Ymir had not put in as much effort during the training. Later, she joined the Survey Corps alongside Historia, primarily to keep an eye on her.
Battle of Trost Arc
Ymir participated in the Battle of Trost when the Colossal Titan destroyed the gate. She was part of the squad that discovered Armin Arlert in a state of hysteria. Ymir mocked him for being the only survivor. This led to a brief argument with Conny Springer, until Historia arrived and diffused the situation. In response, Ymir jokingly asked Historia to marry her once the battle was over. She was one of the soldiers present when the squads retreated to the Wall to receive new orders.
Female Titan Arc
Ymir joined the Survey Corps with Historia. A month later, she took part in the 57th Exterior Scouting Mission. She didn't appear much during this arc, except when the soldiers had to prevent the Titans from entering the forest. At that moment, she asked Bertolt if he knew the whereabouts of Historia. During the battle in the Stohess District, Ymir was absent as she was part of a group of soldiers suspected of being accomplices to Annie Leonhart.
Clash of the Titans Arc
Ymir was first seen in an old mansion, suspected of being an accomplice to Annie Leonhart along with other soldiers from the 104th Training Corps. Then, during the supposed fall of Wall Rose, she accompanied Historia to warn the other villages and investigate the breach in the Wall. When the soldiers sought refuge in Utgard Castle, Conny was still thinking about the Titan from his village. Ymir made a dark joke, saying that if his parents were Titans, "They couldn't have...," implying that they couldn’t have had sex. Conny told her to shut up, and she fell silent.
Ymir's Storyline
104th Training Corps Arc
Ymir was seen later searching for food and talking with Reiner Braun. She remarked that he didn’t seem particularly attracted to women, to which he responded that it wasn’t really the case, and pointed out that she didn’t seem to be attracted to men either. While Ymir was reading the Mahr inscriptions on a can of tuna, Reiner showed his own understanding of the writings. At this moment, both of them realized their mistake: they had inadvertently revealed that they came from Mahr. Caught off guard, Reiner pretended not to understand the writing, asking her if she could read it. The characters weren’t part of the writing used inside the Walls of Paradis, so neither could understand them. If they had been able to read them, it would have revealed their secret. It was implied that Ymir had guessed Reiner was the Armored Titan from this exchange, though it was abruptly interrupted.
Titan Attack on the Castle
When the castle was attacked by Titans, Ymir descended to the lower floors with the others to block the exits. She helped Reiner, who was struggling with a Titan, by kicking the Titan out of the window. Then, she took refuge at the top of the tower with the others. As she watched her superiors get devoured and realized they were trapped, Ymir took a knife and jumped from the tower, injuring her hand and transforming into a Titan. She began fighting the Titans, jumping and strategically biting their napes. However, she was captured by the Titans and had to cling to the tower. Preferring to fall rather than bring the tower down since Historia was there, Ymir clung to the tower and started throwing bricks at the Titans.
As the tower began to collapse, Ymir jumped to the top and said in a hoarse voice, "Hold on to me if you want to live," and the recruits did so. Under the rubble, Ymir was seen beginning to be devoured by the Titans. Fortunately, the Survey Corps arrived and quickly pulled her out, unconscious and missing a leg. They placed her on a stretcher and carried her up the Wall. When Reiner and Bertolt transformed into the Colossal and Armored Titans, Bertolt, still holding her unconscious form, swallowed her.
In the Forest of Giant Trees
Later, after Eren Jäger lost to the Armored Titan following the Colossal Titan’s 50-meter fall, Ymir and Eren were transported to the Forest of Giant Trees. There, Ymir asked Reiner and Bertolt about the "Beast Titan," but they claimed not to know what she was referring to. Ymir continued, saying they looked at it like "two kids in awe." She then explained to Eren that this Beast Titan was directly responsible for the Titan invasion within the second Wall.
Seeing the smoke from the Survey Corps, Reiner and Bertolt prepared to leave, but Ymir convinced them that she would capture Historia. As they moved through the forest, the soldiers were suddenly faced with a flash of light and came face to face with Ymir's Titan form. When Historia arrived, Ymir jumped and swallowed her. Seeing this, Reiner transformed into the Armored Titan and Ymir jumped onto his back as they left once again.
Change of Allegiance
After Reiner was caught by the Survey Corps soldiers, Ymir spoke to Historia about why she changed sides and initially prevented Mikasa from approaching. However, at Historia's request, she stood back. Later, she was seen fighting the other Titans and became concerned about her fate when Historia approached. After a brief exchange, Historia reassured her, saying that she would always stand by her side and that they should stop living for others and start living for themselves.
Ymir continued fighting the Titans to protect Historia. Later, after Eren unintentionally triggered the surrounding Titans on Reiner, Ymir left Historia and went to help Reiner and Bertolt. Once they had escaped and night had fallen, Ymir, Bertolt, and Reiner were seen on Wall Rose. Reiner and Bertolt thanked Ymir for her help, with Bertolt even crying. Ymir, also in tears, told them to enjoy these moments of peace, feeling like a goddess.
Major Turning Point Arc
Eren recalled the conversation Ymir had with Bertolt in the Forest of Giant Trees and wrote it down for Hange Zoë. This information proved vital, leading Hange to speculate that Titans could inherit the powers of the humans who possess the Titan Power by devouring them. This theory led Hange to hypothesize that Rod Reiss wanted to devour Eren to obtain the Founding Titan’s power. By devouring Marcel Galliard, Ymir stole his powers and regained her humanity. This led Hange to suggest that Titans instinctively attempt to devour humans in order to regain their humanity by consuming a Titan Shifter. Ymir's words to Historia, telling her to live with pride, later inspired Historia to defy her father and refuse to devour Eren.
Return to Shiganshina Arc
Before Reiner and Bertolt prepared to attack the Survey Corps, Reiner recalled that they had promised Ymir to save Historia. Later that day, after Reiner was defeated, he revealed that Ymir had written a letter to Historia, which Hange kept for further inspection. Upon receiving it, Historia learned that Reiner had been beside Ymir when she wrote it, and if she was reading these words, it meant that Ymir was about to die.
In the letter, Ymir described her past as a nameless child, taken in by a family who worshipped her and named her Ymir. Then, they were arrested, and Ymir was transformed into a Titan at the Wall separating Mahr from Paradis Island. She regained her humanity after devouring Marcel Galliard. From that point, she began living her life without regrets, except for the regret of not being able to marry Historia.
Mahr Arc
Likely before the Battle of Shiganshina, Ymir was taken to Mahr. Later, she was willingly devoured by Porco Galliard, Marcel’s brother, who inherited his Titan power and all his memories. He mentioned that when he received Ymir’s memories, he noticed how different Reiner Braun seemed on Paradis, accusing him of imitating Marcel Galliard’s personality.
The Great Cataclysm Arc
After Armin Arlelt managed to convince Sieg Jäger to rebel against Eren Jäger and thus stop the Great Cataclysm, the silhouette of Ymir appears, accompanied by many other spirits of former holders of the Founding Titans. Her Jaw Titan then helps the members of the Alliance, the Exploration Battalion, the Warrior Unit, and the Anti-Mahr Mercenaries to defeat the other Founding Titans created by Ymir Fritz.
Relationships
Historia Reiss
Ymir joined the army after accidentally hearing Historia's story, finding that they both shared the experience of being hated to the point of regretting their existence. Ymir was in love with Historia and did everything in her power to protect her, sometimes at the cost of her own life. Ymir actively worked to break down Historia's insecurities, challenging her to accept her true identity and live for herself.
Eren Jäger
Ymir and Eren had little interaction before their kidnapping by Reiner and Bertolt. Eren even admitted that he didn’t know her very well. They quickly became distrustful of each other due to Ymir’s mysterious nature.
Sasha Braus
Their relationship was quite tense, as Ymir apparently didn’t like Sasha and called her an idiot, though Sasha didn’t hold a grudge against her. In fact, it was Ymir who made Sasha realize, through her harsh words, that she didn’t have to speak politely like everyone else just because she was "ashamed" of her hometown.
Reiner Braun
They had little interaction except in Utgard Castle, where they defined themselves as “not attracted to the opposite sex,” and Reiner noticed that Ymir could decipher strange inscriptions.
Bertolt Hoover
Bertolt was initially wary of Ymir, warning Reiner that she killed their friend and was therefore extremely dangerous. His fear of her continued to be a major aspect of their fragile alliance, although he seemed to change his opinion after she saved his life. Later, he expressed his gratitude towards her and was visibly moved by her willingness to risk her life to return to Mahr, despite the certain death awaiting her, showing his intent to return the Jaw Titan to her.
Ymir had a great physical capacity and demonstrated that she was fully capable of fighting and using weapons. During her time as a trainee, it was repeatedly stated that she had started to ease off in order to ensure Historia Reiss a place in the top ten so that she could join the Special Brigades.
Titan Powers
Speed
Despite her small size, her titanic form had superior speed and agility, making it easier for her to scale walls and trees to quickly kill multiple enemies by biting their napes while using her claws and sharp teeth— a tactic she used several times. Against humans or other Titans in a forest, she would have the advantage as she could quickly overpower them. However, her size proved to be a disadvantage, as she was easily subdued by Titans shortly after her transformation at Utgard Castle.
Regeneration
She also demonstrated the ability to automatically heal any injury and even regrow entire limbs. When she lost her right arm and leg in the battle at Utgard Castle, she was able to regenerate in a few hours.
Partial Emergence
She also had the ability to partially emerge in her titanic form, allowing her to interact with others while still transformed, a capability similar to Uli Reiss. This showed that she was skilled at controlling her titanic form.
Communication
Like other "pure" Titans (such as Connie Springer's mother or the Titan that spoke to Ilse Langner), Ymir, in her titanic form, was able to speak. However, like the others mentioned, her speech was rough and she couldn’t speak fluently, unlike Sieg Jäger in his Beast Titan form. She seemed to struggle, as she could only say limited and short phrases, even pausing between words.
