Qu'est-ce que la volonté du D ?

What is the will of the D in One Piece?

One Piece has always been surrounded by mystery, and one of the most important is the initial D appearing in a number of pirate names.

For over 25 years, Eiichiro Oda's One Piece has fascinated fans of both manga and anime. Its often zany antics combine with intrigue, emotional and physical trials and, of course, mystery. One of the greatest mysteries of One Piece, apart from the nature of the One Piece treasure itself, has been the continued appearance of the initial D in a number of character names. From Luffy D Monkey to Gol D Roger, it's certainly no coincidence that all these pirates bear the same mysterious initial. Often referred to as D's Will, it suggests a unique bond between seemingly unrelated people, and the strangest thing is that many of those who wear it don't actually know what the D stands for.

Oda assured fans long ago that D had meaning, noting that it would be revealed over time. Some information has been clarified over the years, but there haven't been many concrete revelations defining the Will of D. With little information sprinkled throughout both the manga and the anime, some conclusions have been drawn, but do they lead fans closer to answers about the Will of D? First of all, it's important to take a look at everything that's been revealed so far.

What is the meaning and mystery of D's will?

Across the seas of One Piece , there have been a number of characters revealed to have a D in their name. One of the best known is the series' main protagonist, Luffy D Monkey. Initially, the recurrence of the D in other character names led fans to wonder how, if at all, these characters were related.

For some, like Luffy, the D has been passed down from generation to generation, but that doesn't necessarily seem to be the case for everyone. As the mystery surrounding the D's will began to unravel through hundreds of episodes, it became clear that even if these characters didn't share a family tree, they did have things in common. All were leaders in their own right, with a gift for expressing their deep desire for personal freedom and pursuing their dreams.

Gol D Roger and Roger's pirates knew the deeper meaning of D's Will, and when Whitebeard asked him what it meant, he agreed to explain. Unfortunately for fans, the flashback scene faded before they could get the answer too, which seems to be Oda's way of trying to express the need to discover the answers for themselves. This has been a recurring theme in One Piece, with Luffy in particular refusing to simply receive answers to the big mysteries. Where's the fun and adventure in that?

In episode 703, the former celestial dragon Donquixote Rosinante told Trafalgar Law that he came from the fatal D family after discovering that he had the initial of his name. In Rosinante's childhood homeland, parents were often known to tell misbehaving children that they would be eaten by "D" if they didn't straighten up. He also noted that the elders feared the "storm" that members of the secret D family were known to cause, claiming that they were often called God's natural enemy, or rather the celestial dragons, who are known to be gods . . It was also later noted by Imu that the Ds were considered enemies of the Great Kingdom during the Void Century, suggesting that they had long been the active opposition against oppression and domination.

Family tree Will of D

At present, there are thirteen known carriers of the D initial, although some believe there are many more who are unaware of their heritage or prefer to remain hidden. Six of the 13 are dead, including Gol D Roger, Portgas D Ace, Portgas D Rouge, Rocks D Xebec, Nefertari D Lili and Nefertari Cobra. The remaining seven include Luffy, his father Dragon D Monkey and grandfather Garp D Monkey, Marshall D Teach, Nefertari Vivi, Jaguar D Saul and Trafalgar D Water Law .

Does Baggy have D's will?

Captain of the Buggy Pirates and co-leader of the Buggy and Alvida Alliance, Buggy the Star Clown was once an apprentice to the Roger Pirates. Although he was once one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea, he lost that title when the system was abolished, but went on to become one of the Four Emperors. Despite his many nefarious deeds over the years, Buggy has no Will of D.

Does Usopp have D's will?

Also known as "God" Usopp and about a half-dozen other names , straw-hat sharpshooter Usopp developed a reputation over the years not only for telling outrageous lies , but also for accidentally finding himself in ridiculously heroic situations. Dubbed "God" after freeing thousands of slaves, as he delivered his speech underground, a strange light was projected onto him from above, creating an ethereal quality that made former slaves believe he was holy. Whether Usopp has D's will has yet to be confirmed, but given what fans really know about his story to date, there's a good chance the answer is no.
