What happens to Gojo at the end of Jujutsu Kaisen?

Satoru Gojo was introduced as the "strongest sorcerer" in the Jujutsu Kaisen universe.

After an explosive debut in the first episode, where he crushed Ryomen Sukuna, Gojo quickly became the iconic figure of JJK. Over the course of the seasons and the manga, more and more fans were captivated by his personality, strength, design, and character, not to mention his deep commitment to preserving and educating the new generation of Jujutsu sorcerers.

Now that JJK has finished its manga and all the character statuses have been confirmed, fans are eagerly waiting to know what will happen to Gojo at the end of the series. The death of Sukuna and Kenjaku was a blessing, but their actions also devastated the Jujutsu community. Gojo's dream of changing the world was a key feature of his narrative arc, and even his death should not have prevented his protégés from continuing his legacy.

Satoru Gojo was a modern product of Jujutsu's ancient legacy

The most powerful sorcerer worked hard to create a better world

Born as the pride of the Gojo clan, Satoru Gojo entered the world with the powerful combination of the Infinity and the Six Eyes technique. Infinity allows Gojo to manipulate reality and space at will, a potent ability enhanced by the Six Eyes. This trait gives its users ultra-precise control over their cursed energy. Thus, Gojo's potential was immeasurable from the day he opened his sky-blue eyes after birth. In addition to his basic powers, Gojo possesses several other abilities that make him a formidable opponent on the Jujutsu battlefield.

In the first season of the anime, fans saw Gojo humiliate Jogo and Sukuna, even though the King of Curses was far from his peak at the time. However, at this stage, the curses of the Special Grade villains were unable to reach Gojo, let alone worry him. Gojo was so powerful that the main villains had to specifically plan his neutralization before launching their main operations. However, Gojo had to face much more than his enemies: he also dedicated a lot of time to ensuring that the old traditions of Jujutsu wouldn’t hold back the younger generation of sorcerers. Thankfully, Gojo's overwhelming strength allowed him to keep both the villains and the authorities at bay.

The Hidden Inventory Arc reveals Gojo's transformation

Gojo understood the importance of mentoring the youth

Season 2 of Jujutsu Kaisen gave viewers a glimpse into Gojo's past, when he was a student at the Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical College, before he truly inherited his position as the most powerful sorcerer of the modern era. In this flashback, fans discovered a more immature Gojo, whose bond with the villain-turned-puppet, Suguru Geto, played a crucial role in his development. For many, this arc remains one of the best in the entire series, showcasing an epic clash between Gojo and Toji Fushiguro. For the first time, fans saw Gojo lose a fight and be left on the brink of death by Toji.

"In all the sky and on all the earth, I alone am honored" — Satoru Gojo

It was at this moment that Gojo finally became aware of the mechanisms behind cursed energy. He also understood how to fully harness his Six Eyes and Infinity, generating an attack so powerful that it gutted Toji Fushiguro. Known as the Technique of the Purple Void, this enhancement made Gojo seemingly invincible, but it also led to his isolation, with a growing gap between him and the rest of the Jujutsu community. Gojo felt the pain of loneliness, standing alone at his supreme level, but this would eventually change. That said, it was the death of Riko Amanai and Suguru Geto's defection that truly transformed Gojo as a person.

Gradually, Gojo became accustomed to mentoring his students and taking them under his wing, especially those rejected by the Jujutsu authorities for one reason or another. If he saw potential in someone, Gojo would forget all caution and rush to encourage and teach them. Yuta and Yuji are alive today thanks to Gojo's intervention, while Megumi could have become an arrogant Zenin if Gojo hadn't stepped in to become his mentor after killing his father, Toji. These three young men represent the future of Jujutsu Kaisen, and Gojo made sure that Yuji, Yuta, and Megumi would improve the world for good.

Gojo always wanted to meet his soulmate

He was a warrior as much as a teacher

Gojo and Sukuna stand back-to-back during their first fight in the Jujutsu Kaisen anime.
Beyond his noble teaching efforts, Gojo represented a threat to his enemies thanks to his combat skills. All his allies noticed that, despite his supernatural strength, Gojo seemed to enjoy fighting more than anything. Gege Akutami confirmed in an interview that Gojo is happiest when he encounters a skilled jujutsu sorcerer. In a questionnaire, Akutami revealed many hidden aspects of Gojo's character. His personality, laid-back attitude, arrogant demeanor, and great pride in his strength led many to not want to be his friend, while others despised him.

The loneliness he felt after defeating Toji Fushiguro was exacerbated by the reactions of the highest authorities in Jujutsu, who began to see him as an extremely dangerous threat. Like any anime character with incalculable power, Gojo first and foremost wanted to find someone capable of offering him the best possible fight. He needed an opponent who could give their all on the battlefield, and that wouldn't be Toji Fushiguro. However, his encounter with Yuji possessed by Sukuna would eventually guarantee a fight between the most powerful sorcerer of the modern era and the most powerful sorcerer in history.

Gojo's stay in the Prison Realm led to a new tragedy

Gojo could have potentially stopped the Culling Game

Almost everyone in Jujutsu Kaisen, from heroes to villains, knew that Satoru Gojo was an insurmountable obstacle in combat. And since Sukuna wasn't strong enough before the Shibuya Incident, Kenjaku devised a plan to keep Gojo locked away so they could carry out their evil schemes in Shibuya and initiate the Culling Game. The villain used the Prison Realm, an extremely powerful cursed object capable of trapping anyone inside, to imprison Gojo in a pocket dimension. Gojo only had to wait for someone on his side to figure out how to free him, but his 19-day absence from the front lines had serious consequences.

Before being finally freed from the Prison Realm in chapter 221, Gojo spent over 130 chapters away from his allies. This allowed for the execution of Principal Masamichi Yaga, the near-execution of Yuji Itadori by Hiromi Higuruma, and several other deaths during the Culling Game. Had Gojo been present throughout this period, it's likely the Culling Game would never have begun. More importantly, Sukuna might not have had the opportunity to tame Mahoraga, the most powerful Shikigami of Megumi's Ten Shadows Technique. Being sidelined had disastrous consequences, as Sukuna already possessed Megumi by the time Gojo escaped the Prison Realm.

Gojo vs Sukuna is already a historic Shonen battle

The battle between Gojo and Sukuna destroyed half the city and lasted 13 chapters

During the Culling Game arc of Jujutsu Kaisen, Sukuna had nearly recovered all of his fingers and had the ideal host to challenge Satoru Gojo. Meanwhile, Gojo and his allies had been preparing for the inevitable battle for over a month. The action took place off-screen, maintaining the pace for the action sequences that followed. The date for the Gojo vs Sukuna match was set, and the fight began when Gojo used the Hollow Technique: Violet in chapter 223 of the manga. Gojo then declared that Sukuna was "the opponent," implying that the King of Curses needed to prove himself in battle.

The initial fight will likely become even more iconic after the anime adaptation, as the two most powerful characters in Jujutsu Kaisen clash for the title of the best. Despite the power of Gojo’s Domain Expansion, Sukuna had a much larger arsenal, as he now possessed the ability to use Mahoraga. Using Mahoraga's universal adaptation against Gojo's various techniques, Sukuna managed to devise the only attack capable of bypassing Gojo's Infinity. Known as the "Cleft Slash," it easily pierced Gojo's body and killed him in one of the most epic panels of Jujutsu Kaisen.

Gojo humbly admitted his defeat in the afterlife

Spectators discover Gojo in the afterlife, finally surrounded by those whose lives his strength had previously isolated him from. Suguru Geto, Kento Nanami, Riko Amanai, Principal Masamichi, and several others warmly greet their fallen comrade. Having finally found his equal, Gojo humbly expresses that he had fun in the fight and died without regrets, a drastic change from his arrogant attitude. The fandom, however, was deeply shaken. Some wished that Gojo hadn’t died at all, while others complained about his death being too abrupt and out of place. Many fans even wondered how the rest of the cast could hope to defeat Sukuna without Satoru Gojo.

Gojo's power haunted Sukuna, even after his death

Fans wondered for a moment if Akutami was faking Gojo’s death, explaining all the internet searches like “Is Gojo dead?” Many believed that the blue-eyed hero would return to help his students; after all, Gojo is the strongest, right? Their wish was granted, but not as they had hoped. When Gojo returned to the battlefield and challenged Sukuna, the villain was briefly shocked before realizing what had happened. It was actually Yuta Okkotsu, who had copied Kenjaku’s brain transplant and used it to implant his own brain into Gojo’s body in order to wield his teacher’s powers. Yuta managed to manifest Gojo’s Infinity to face Sukuna, along with a few other techniques.

However, the plan didn’t go as expected. After five minutes, Gojo’s body collapsed due to the limitations of Yuta’s Copy. During those five minutes, Yuta, already exceptionally strong, had to face numerous challenges while using Gojo’s body. Whether it was the size of his limbs or using Gojo’s eyes in the manga, Yuta struggled and made several mistakes. Despite his efforts, he couldn’t fully become Satoru Gojo.

This was the answer to the question Geto had asked Gojo years ago when he left the Jujutsu society and Gojo confronted him:

"Are you the strongest because you are Satoru Gojo? Or are you Satoru Gojo because you are the strongest?" — Suguru Geto

This existential question had tormented the character of Gojo since his appearance in the Hidden Inventory arc, and fans now have the answer. Despite his body, his techniques, and his memories, Yuta could never be as strong as Gojo. In the end, Satoru Gojo was the strongest because he was Satoru Gojo. Therefore, his death forced the remaining heroes to fight at even higher levels, something Gojo may have already hoped for. As a mentor at heart, Gojo knew that his students would rise up and save the situation.

Gojo's influence helped reshape the Jujutsu Society

Gojo’s dreams of change were fulfilled by Yuji, Yuta, and Megumi

By the end of Jujutsu Kaisen, Satoru Gojo’s death was confirmed. No wish, no cursed technique, no miracle could bring him back to life. Ultimately, Gojo passed away on his own terms. Considering that his students were fighting the one who had managed to kill him, some fans wondered how Gojo could die without regrets. Chapter 271 of Jujutsu Kaisen, "From Now On," revealed that Gojo had already accepted the idea of losing, as he trusted his students to finish the job. As expected, Yuji managed to save Megumi and defeat Sukuna.

Gojo's final scene in Jujutsu Kaisen takes the form of a flashback to a conversation with Yuji. He advises the protagonist of the series to develop a "completely different kind of strength" before stating that he "expects great things" from Yuji. This lesson is reflected in the compassionate treatment Yuji gives to a curse user in chapter 271. The hero repeats his mentor’s encouragement to the criminal, ensuring that Gojo's lessons of forgiveness, mercy, and clemency will serve as the foundation for the future. The final victory of the younger generation also demonstrates that they deserve to carry on the legacy of the Jujutsu society, as Gojo believed.
