Tashigi is the first character in One Piece to truly mention the concept of named blades. Many of these blades have gained a certain level of fame in the anime world and are easily recognizable by those who study them. Among these named blades are the graded swords. The most famous of them have been used by powerful characters like Dracule Mihawk and Gol D. Roger. Roronoa Zoro’s Wado Ichimonji also holds a rank assigned by the renowned and skilled blacksmith who forged it. Technically, a named blade doesn’t need to be a sword to be graded.

Handling a powerful sword requires a lot of respect. Although they grant power to their user, they also require powerful users. Many swords presented in One Piece have unknown grades and could fall into any category, but that doesn’t guarantee their power. Some named blades are ungraded. They are neither recognized for their strength nor their grace, but they remain powerful and remarkable nonetheless. Trafalgar Law's Kikoku belongs to both categories and is a cursed blade. It is said that swords have a personality, and any sword that has caused the death of its user is considered cursed. Swordsmen must prove themselves against the sword they wield in order to survive. This is the only way to reveal the potential of a blade.
Grade swords are common in the One Piece universe.
Only two grade swords have been confirmed.
Grade blades stand out for their strength and elegance compared to basic named swords, but they aren’t particularly special beyond that. Their total number remains unknown, but only two have been mentioned in the One Piece series. Among them, Sandai Kitetsu is more notable than Shigure. Sandai Kitetsu is a cursed blade with a dark past, whose worth was proven by Zoro’s confidence in himself. Zoro has kept Sandai Kitetsu with him ever since he obtained it in Loguetown. Shigure is Tashigi’s sword, and she hopes to use it to reclaim all named swords from those unworthy of wielding them. While Sandai Kitetsu is the third in the Kitetsu line created by Kozuki Sukiyaki, Shigure doesn’t have such a background.
Grade blades are incredible swords. Fewer than 100 superior grade swords surpass them. However, they are considered inferior to superior grade blades and are worth less. Of all the unknown grade blades in the One Piece anime, most are probably of this level. It’s hard to imagine that Johnny and Yosaku’s swords are superior to these, despite their grade. These are the swords that most skilled swordsmen can obtain, but as the series suggests, most good swordsmen possess something better. Just by their sheer number, grade blades present a major obstacle to Tashigi's dream.
Skilled, large, and supreme quality swords are particularly remarkable.
These high-quality swords are available in limited numbers.
There is a limited number of skilled, high-quality, and supreme grade blades in the world. There are 50 skilled grade swords, 21 of high quality, and only 12 supreme grade swords. All these swords are famous and easily recognizable. Most are also wielded by renowned swordsmen. The fewer the swords in each grade, the better made they are. These swords have all proven their durability and ability to perform incredible feats. Notably, Kozuki Oden’s two swords, Enma and Ame no Habakiri, are of superior grade. There are three canon skilled grade swords. Five of the superior grade blades have been revealed. While not all are showcased, five of the supreme grade swords have been named.
Once Zoro acquired his swords in Loguetown, he only used named blades. Yubashiri is the only Expert grade sword he ever used. Shisui, Enma, and Wado Ichimonji are all Excellent grade swords. They all come from Wano, a region renowned for its swordsmiths. Tashigi obtained two of these Expert grade swords by fighting pirates and proving her own strength as a swordswoman. Some of these swords have special abilities, such as Enma’s power to drain the user’s armament haki. These traits make them difficult to wield but incredibly powerful. Given the limited number of blades in these grades, it's unknown what happens when a new sword reaches these higher levels.
Warlords, admirals, emperors, and pirate kings
Only powerful individuals possess single-piece supreme quality swords.
Among the supreme grade swords, all but one have been revealed to have an incredibly famous user. Yoru is the most recognizable: Dracule Mihawk, the blade of the world's greatest swordsman. Admiral Fujitora also uses a supreme grade sword, hidden in his cane. Whitebeard’s Murakumogiri shows that these blades aren’t necessarily traditional swords and can come in an incredible variety. Roger’s Ace is also of supreme grade. Only Shodai Kitetsu has not been shown in the One Piece anime, but we have just mentioned it. Many fans believe this sword is in the possession of one of the Five Elders. Since the other Kitetsu swords have already appeared in the anime, it’s likely that it will appear at some point.
Swords are considered supreme-grade when they are the best in the world. To be recognized as such, they must prove themselves by surviving fierce battles. Thus, only a sword wielded by a powerful swordsman can reach this level. Among the unknown grade swords, the one most likely to be supreme grade is Shanks' Griffon. Supreme grade swords can only be wielded by powerful users. Since swords have personalities, these users are probably very demanding when it comes to their handling. Murakumogiri currently rests on Whitebeard’s grave and has not been claimed by a new user. It might not be a big mystery, but fans are unsure of where Ace is currently located.

Zoro’s favorite sword should grow with him.
Another aspect of blade grades is the black blade. After surviving many battles, a blade can transform into a black blade. It is said that the sword then advances to a higher grade. These blades are considered the most durable in the world, but their creation requires great dedication. Although this has not been confirmed, popular belief holds that this process is tied to armament haki. A blade like Enma would more easily turn into a black blade due to the haki it drains. However, the sword Zoro has dedicated himself to the most and holds dear is Wado Ichimonji. It is also the sword he has used the longest in battle.
Wado Ichimonji embodies Zoro’s promise to become the world’s greatest swordsman alongside Shimotsuki Kuina. It is the only sword he holds in his mouth for his three-sword style. As Zoro grows, it makes sense that his sword would grow too. Yoru is a black blade, and Wado Ichimonji would be of the same level if it were also black. This would place Zoro on equal footing with Mihawk when they fight for the title. One could say that Zoro won’t be ready to claim the title of the world’s greatest swordsman until he transforms Wado Ichimonji into a black blade.
The names and grades of blades are an important element in One Piece. They aren’t always present in the main storyline, as this information is better shared through other media. Zoro himself doesn’t care about specific grades. He judges a sword by its strength and personality without knowing its grade. The character for whom these elements matter most is Tashigi, but her dream is doomed to failure. Even though these grades don’t hold particular importance for Zoro, they provide a good way for fans to better understand the many swordsmen of the One Piece universe.
