Matsuda was one of the funniest characters in the manga and often helped his comrades, even if they didn't always appreciate him at his true value. He was ready to sacrifice himself to save them on several occasions, and readers could always count on him to bring a smile, despite the darkness of the series. When Matsuda was spying on Yotsuba employees to get clues about the Kira case, he was discovered. To save himself, he pretended to be there for business. Working with L, they devised a plan to fake his death. Matsuda pretended to get drunk and "fell" from a balcony. This fooled Higuchi, who believed Matsuda was dead.
9. "Great! I'll quit the police force and pursue Kira with you, Chief! I've finally been useful, and I don't want to give up now. Plus, I'm Misa-Misa's manager, so I won't be unemployed."
When the NPA decided to sever ties with L, members of the investigation team had to make a choice. Matsuda, full of enthusiasm, decided to continue working with L, ignoring the more delicate situation of Aizawa, who had to provide for his family.

8. "I'm not trying to defend Kira, but lately, there has been a significant drop in violent crime worldwide, especially in Japan."
Matsuda was the only one who understood that Kira wasn't entirely evil. Although he expressed this opinion, his colleagues did not appreciate his remark. This shows how Matsuda had a different vision from the others.

While Light and L were arguing, Matsuda tried to distract them by talking about Misa's success, but this only annoyed them further.

When Misa sent tapes to Sakura TV to meet Kira, several police officers tried to stop the broadcast. Matsuda then realized they were not alone and that other forces were ready to act.

When they discovered that Higuchi was the Kira working with Yotsuba, Matsuda played a key role in his capture, putting his life in danger by appearing on television to reveal he was still alive.

Always ready to sacrifice himself to stop Kira, Matsuda offered to get the Shinigami Eyes to find Mello's name and stop him once and for all.

Even after L's death, Matsuda maintained his faith in the idea that Kira could have just motives. It was only after discovering Kira's true identity that he changed his mind.

When Near revealed that Light was Kira, Matsuda lost all trust in him and shot him. He deeply respected Soichiro and could not forgive Light for causing the death of his own father.
