There are also anime so bad that harsh reviews damage their reputation for years.
Despite that, several exceptional animated series deserve to be watched at least once, from the three big names of shōnen to future modern classics like Frieren: Beyond the Journey's End or Attack on Titan.

The second season of The Promised Neverland was such a failure that fans only remember the first one. The ending of Erased was so disappointing that viewers rejected everything after episode 10. However, there are truly cursed classics, so infamous for their poor quality that even the most hardcore anime fans feel compelled to try them at least once before permanently abandoning them.
10. School Days is full of blood, gore, and brutal clichés
School Days, from Studio TNK, is a 2007 harem anime that sparked major controversy due to its plot, protagonist, and ending—pretty much every aspect of its story. Following high school student Itou Makoto, this disastrous slice-of-life quickly spiraled into a frustrating and hollow drama after the main character turned a simple teenage romance into a deadly love triangle.
School Days is an anime fans can’t forget—and for all the wrong reasons. With its poor pacing and lifeless clichés, the series offers little actual entertainment. But what viewers remember most is its shockingly grim ending to a love story ruined by the protagonist’s own lack of loyalty. School Days is one of those series anime fans watch not for the quality of the story, but just to understand why the general opinion is so negative.
9. The English dub of Ghost Stories makes this poorly rated horror anime 100 times better
Ghost Stories, produced by Studio Pierrot and released in October 2000, is a horror-mystery anime focused on Satsuki and Keiichirou, a sister and brother who move to their late mother’s hometown. There, they discover that their new school is actually haunted, filled with spirits and poltergeists determined to harm them.
As a serious horror anime, Ghost Stories is far from decent. However, the English dub transformed Studio Pierrot’s biggest oddity into a goldmine of dark, satirical humor. It’s now recommended to all anime fans simply for the hilarious liberties the English voice actors took with the script, turning the series into an off-the-wall comedy that many viewers struggle to believe is real.

8. Mars of Destruction is 20 minutes of terrible plot and animation
Mars of Destruction is a 2005 OVA animated by WAO World, telling the story of humanity’s fight against alien beings known as “Ancients.” The main protagonist, Takeru Hinata, is the only one who can wield the “MARS” combat suit and help ensure mankind’s survival. This short animated feature bears numerous similarities to Gainax’s Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Mars of Destruction is one of the lowest-rated anime in history. Aside from being what fans have called a “bootleg version of Evangelion,” it suffers from atrocious pacing and poor animation. It crams what should be a full season into just 20 minutes, featuring characters that barely resemble the classic masterpiece it tries to imitate. It’s worth watching just to understand how it failed where other great sci-fi anime succeeded.
7. King’s Game is only good if you don’t take it seriously
Premiering in October 2017, King’s Game is a death game anime by Studio Seven in which high school students are forced to perform acts of fan service and horror to survive. The protagonist, Nobuaki Kanazawa, and his class begin receiving a series of mysterious text messages from a figure known as “The King,” who delivers deadly punishments if they refuse to follow his increasingly ridiculous written commands.
Death game anime are popular for their high stakes and thrilling suspense, but that tension is almost entirely missing in King’s Game. The series ends up feeling more like an unintentional dark comedy, with its shallow plot and messy characters—and it becomes even funnier when watched in its English dub version.
6. Pupa is an unbearable anime disaster people couldn’t look away from
Pupa is a 2014 production by Studio Deen, based on the manga of the same name by Sayaka Mogi. This psychological horror series follows Utsutsu Hasegawa as he tries to care for his younger sister, Yume, after they are both infected by a strange virus that gives her a hunger for flesh. At first glance, the story seems like a touching tale of sibling love, but the anime becomes disturbingly inappropriate with each episode.
After Utsutsu offers his own flesh to Yume, the narrative begins to turn the act of feeding his sister into an awkward euphemism for something far more unsettling. Every moment of Pupa’s four-minute episodes creates a surreal, twisted storyline so bizarre that viewers can’t help but keep watching—just to see where this strange anime is going.
5. Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo is an acquired taste for comedy anime fans
Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo is a 2003 gag shōnen anime where hair takes center stage. The main character, Bobobo, is a golden-haired hero on a mission to save the world from the tyrannical Maruhage Empire, which steals people’s hair. This is a completely over-the-top series that either irritates viewers or makes them laugh uncontrollably—there’s no in-between.
Comedic anime can fall flat fast, and Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo is no exception. Many anime fans describe it as nonsensical and filled with repetitive humor only kids would enjoy. Still, comedy is subjective, and this show managed to find an audience who fondly remembers Bobobo and his weaponized mustache. If nothing else, it’s worth watching just to understand why some people loved its ridiculous chaos.
4. Rent-a-Girlfriend has one of the most unbearable anime protagonists
Rent-a-Girlfriend is a romantic comedy anime by TMS Entertainment, based on the manga by Reiji Miyajima. In this story, college student Kazuya Kinoshita tries to cope with heartbreak after his girlfriend dumps him by hiring a rental girlfriend through a professional service.
Rent-a-Girlfriend sets up the perfect premise for a comedy harem anime, but it's anything but a series where multiple women fall hopelessly in love with a single lead. The show sabotages itself with a plot that feels directionless and a painfully unlikable protagonist whom audiences would rather despise than empathize with.

3. Platinum End could have been the next Death Note, but the anime missed the mark
Created by the same duo behind the iconic supernatural thriller Death Note, Platinum End is an anime adaptation by Signal.MD that follows a deadly competition similar to Future Diary, where 12 candidates are chosen to fight to the death for the chance to become God. It’s an intense psychological series that sadly fails to meet the expectations set by Obata and Ohba’s previous work.
The premise and protagonist of Platinum End initially intrigued audiences, but fans were ultimately disappointed by weak antagonists and an overuse of meaningless or unnecessary death scenes. The themes of morality and the consequences of power—so intricately explored in Death Note—were quickly abandoned, especially with the anime’s disappointing ending. While it’s worth watching to see what could have been, Platinum End falls far short of its predecessor’s legacy.
2. Diabolik Lovers is more of a horror show than a true romance anime
Diabolik Lovers, the 2013 otome anime from Studio Zexcs, follows Yui Komori after she’s sent to the Sakamaki mansion to become the bride of one of six vampire brothers. This dark series is yet another reverse harem anime centered around a heroine who severely lacks agency or personality.
The Sakamaki brothers themselves embody exaggerated versions of “dere” tropes, each with an unhealthy sense of entitlement and possessiveness, creating a toxic atmosphere for an already powerless heroine. Diabolik Lovers is one of the worst reverse harem anime, but its consistently twisted turns keep it strangely watchable—even as viewers grow increasingly frustrated by Yui’s almost comically helpless demeanor and the abuse inflicted by her vampire suitors.
1. High School of the Dead is a spicy zombie anime packed with good action
Released in the summer of 2010 and animated by Madhouse, High School of the Dead is an ecchi shōnen anime about a group of high school students trying to survive a zombie apocalypse together. It’s famously known for the “bullet-dodging boobs” gif that went viral online, but the series also offers tightly choreographed action sequences that hooked many viewers.
While the fan service is over-the-top and often distracting, High School of the Dead blends horror, action, and outrageous ecchi elements into a chaotic but memorable experience. It may not be a masterpiece, but it’s definitely a wild ride that anime fans won’t forget anytime soon.
High School of the Dead is mostly known for its over-the-top ecchi fan service, which largely explains its place among the lowest-rated survival anime. That said, this zombie apocalypse series also features well-written plotlines, compelling characters, and intense scenes, making it an enjoyable watch all the way through to the final moments of the last episode.
