When the Phantom Lord guild targets Fairy Tail by destroying their guild hall and injuring several members, Makarov vows to avenge his children. Their guild master, as well as Phantom Lord, suffers a crushing defeat at the hands of Makarov and his Fairy Tail companions.

Makarov confronts Hades on the very essence of magic. While Hades believes that true magic is born from darkness, Makarov sees magic as a neutral force, shaped by those who use it.

Makarov reminds Hades that despite the rules imposed by others, Fairy Tail has always lived on its own terms, using magic in its own way, regardless of its origin.

When he receives complaints from the Magic Council, Makarov burns them, encouraging his members to live their lives without worrying about rules. For him, following rules hinders personal growth, and he prefers his guild children to follow their own path.
