Ichigo "Fullbring" Figure - Bleach™

10. "The Day I Became a Shinigami" Introduces Ichigo and Rukia as Soul Reaper Heroes

The first episode of almost any anime is a must-watch, whether the viewer is committed to watching every episode or just skimming through to get a feel for it. Bleach is no different: Episode 1 introduces Ichigo and Rukia while laying the essential groundwork for Bleach's combat system with Soul Reapers and Hollows.

This episode established Rukia as a reverse-isekai heroine and Ichigo as a brave human with incredible spiritual gifts, as he fought the Hollow named Fishbone D. The mix of action, humor, supernatural elements, and Ichigo's new friendship with Rukia helped summarize the essence of Bleach in just one episode.

9. "Kon’s Great Plan" Establishes Ichigo’s First Real Stakes as a Soul Reaper

For a few episodes, Bleach followed Rukia and Ichigo teaming up to fight Hollows, but that changed when Rukia fled one night, prompting Ichigo to search for her. The sad truth was that Rukia was considered a criminal by the Soul Society, and Renji and Byakuya had come to take her back. Even worse, Ichigo failed to stop them despite his efforts.

This episode marked a tragic turning point: Ichigo and Rukia were separated, and Ichigo even saw his nameless zanpakuto destroyed. It was a terrible night for Ichigo, but it ultimately allowed him to reset his powers, preparing him for the mission ahead. These twists helped set up the Soul Society arc, arguably Bleach's best storyline.

8. "Ichigo Becomes a Hollow!" Reboot of Ichigo's Zanpakuto and Fighting Style

Ichigo wears a Hollow mask and a white cloth over his black robe in the Bleach anime.
With his unnamed zanpakuto gone, Ichigo needed a new weapon and a new mentor, as shown in episode 19 of Bleach’s first season. This episode pushed Ichigo to his limits, nearly turning him into a Hollow midway through Kisuke Urahara's training. However, he pulled through and obtained a new weapon named Zangetsu, which would remain his iconic zanpakuto for hundreds of episodes.

"Ichigo Becomes a Hollow!" also revealed the truth behind Ichigo's other powers. He emerged from the trial with a Hollow mask on his face and seemed fairly comfortable with it. The true nature of Ichigo’s inner powers remained a mystery at the time, but this moment set the stage for him to use Hollow abilities in the future — as a Soul Reaper unlike any other.

7. "Conclusion of the Death Match! White Pride and Black Desire" : The Heart Behind Byakuya Kuchiki’s Actions

The entire Soul Society arc was filled with incredible battles and twists, but none more important than the fateful rematch between Ichigo and his sworn enemy, Captain Byakuya Kuchiki of Squad 6. They were fighting for Rukia’s fate, so the stakes were much higher than simply proving who was the better swordsman or settling a personal grudge.

In episode 59, Ichigo’s inner Hollow powers returned, setting the stage for him to eventually master them in future episodes. This episode also humanized Byakuya’s stance to some degree. While he was still wrong for defending Rukia’s unjust death sentence, he also spoke as a nobleman and a captain tasked with upholding the law. If high-born souls like him didn’t respect it, no one would, and chaos and crime would overrun the Soul Society. That said, Byakuya ultimately yielded and swore to stay out of Ichigo’s way.

6. "Urgent Report! Aizen’s Terrifying Plan!" Ichigo Finally Masters His Inner Hollow

One of Bleach’s best training arcs unfolded when Ichigo met the eight Visoreds, who helped him confront his inner Hollow head-on. In episode 125, Ichigo found the resolve to fight and defeat his Hollow counterpart on equal footing, allowing him to become the "king" between them. It was a major breakthrough, but the developments of episode 125 didn’t stop there.

The main plot of Bleach, which had slowed down at that point, picked up again when Toshiro’s team spoke to the Gotei 13 captains about the coming war with Aizen’s Arrancar army. It was a key moment to reignite excitement, fear, and a sense of looming danger as both sides prepared for battle — though Ichigo’s role remained uncertain.

5. “The Moment of Conclusion, the End of Grimmjow” Highlights Ichigo’s Unshakable Determination

Many of Bleach’s best plot moments revolve around Ichigo’s victories over his enemies, which go beyond merely resolving the physical stakes of battle. Ichigo didn’t defeat characters like Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez just to settle grudges — his victory over Grimmjow actually put the Arrancar on a path of partial redemption, becoming more of an anti-hero. After losing to Ichigo, Grimmjow had to find a new purpose in life, something less rooted in conflict.

Ichigo’s victory in episode 167 also once again proved his incredible determination, which was tested when Grimmjow questioned his reasons for coming to Las Noches. Ichigo had hesitated more than once in Bleach, so he needed victories like the one against Grimmjow to redefine his motivations and heroic resolve.

4. “Defend Karakura Town! Entire Appearance of the Shinigami” Marks the Beginning of Sosuke Aizen’s Final Push Toward Victory

Kisuke Urahara & Yoruichi Figure POP - Bleach™

Some Bleach episodes clearly mark the beginning or end of narrative arcs — like when characters move to a new location to fight with new stakes. These plot-centered episodes are essential viewing, explaining key developments while building viewer interest and investment.

Episode 215 marked the start of the final war against supervillain Sosuke Aizen, who at that point was putting his ultimate plan into action. Aizen wasn’t content with ruling Hueco Mundo — he wanted to eliminate the Shinigami and create the Oken to reach the Soul King, but Captain Yamamoto stood in his way. Yamamoto and his allies held their ground in the replica of Karakura Town, acting as true heroes facing the forces of evil for the first time.

3. “THE BLOOD WARFARE” Sets Up the Incredible Thousand-Year Blood War Arc

The Thousand-Year Blood War arc began with a must-watch episode that brought Bleach back to TV after ten years. Episode 367 launched a new narrative while updating the visuals for the 2020s, encouraging anime fans to stay tuned and experience Bleach at its peak production quality.

Episode 367 also made it clear that even though Ichigo was the strong, mighty hero who had defeated Aizen and the Espadas, his battles were far from over, and even more powerful enemies awaited him. The terrifying reality of the Quincy Empire shattered the audience’s sense of safety and comfort around Ichigo’s team, preparing them for the brutal war to come — beginning with Asguiaro’s ambush and the tragic death of Chojiro.

2. “The Sternritter’s March” Raises the Deadly Stakes of the Final Arc

The plot of the Thousand-Year Blood War arc is dense, so anime fans who binge the final arc are encouraged not to miss anything. After just three episodes, the TYBW arc delivered another must-watch: episode 369 marked the start of the promised war from episode 367. That’s when Yhwach led his armies into the Seireitei, while Quilge Opie continued wreaking havoc in Hueco Mundo.

Another key part of this episode was the tactical strength of the Quincy Empire, with Quilge acting as bait to lure Ichigo away from the Soul Society and ease the invasion. With Ichigo absent, the Shinigami struggled greatly, and Uryu Ishida wrestled with choosing a side. This subplot ultimately led to Uryu’s shocking and consequential decision shortly after.

1. “Born in the Dark” Is a Brutal Turning Point for the Gotei 13 and Ichigo

“Born in the Dark” shed light on Ichigo’s personal stakes in the TYBW war, as he had more to deal with than just protecting his Shinigami friends. This episode revealed the truth behind Ichigo’s family lineage, sparking interest among new viewers when Yhwach referred to him as “his son born in the dark.” Never before had Ichigo had such an intimate connection with the villains.

Episode 373 delivered a twist similar to “Kon’s Great Plan,” destroying Ichigo’s zanpakuto and challenging him to forge a new one. As before, Ichigo had to dig deep and uncover his true nature before creating an even stronger zanpakuto. This storyline ultimately led to Ichigo learning the truth about his mother and training with the Royal Guard to forge his final Zangetsu.
