First airing on Adult Swim, this dark satirical comedy tells the story of two young brothers, 10-year-old Huey and 8-year-old Riley Freeman, who move in with their grandfather after leaving Chicago. Its humor and play on stereotypes made it one of the most successful and engaging ethnic comedies of its time.

Released in 2021, Trese is an urban fantasy series that follows Alexandra Trese, a detective who handles supernatural cases in Manila, Philippines. She eventually becomes embroiled in a larger conspiracy involving the supernatural population of the region.

The series was produced by BASE Entertainment and animated by Tiger Animation Studios. With the original comic writer and artist as showrunners, Trese (Netflix) was able to stay true to its source material and adapt a complex story where unique creatures from Filipino folklore have taken control of the country’s criminal underworld, and Alexandra works to maintain a delicate balance between the supernatural world and the human world in the Philippines.

6. Voltron takes its audience on a journey through space and time

Voltron: Legendary Defender is the modern reboot of Voltron: Defender of the Universe, originally released in 1984. Aired on Netflix, this revival of a decades-old franchise follows five unlikely young heroes who become the paladins (pilots) of five robotic lion-shaped war machines that combine to form the legendary character known as Voltron, a powerful mecha powered by both science and magic.

The Voltron Netflix series was animated by the South Korean animation studio Mir and produced by DreamWorks Animation. It was also one of the first anime-inspired series on the platform, with the original Voltron being adapted from the Japanese series Beast King GoLion. It made a splash when it first aired, and despite some discontent with its ending, many fans found the series to be a wild space adventure that defined Netflix anime in the late 2010s.

5. Heaven Official's Blessing is an irresistible romance

Animated by Haoliners Animation League, a Shanghai-based studio, Heaven Official's Blessing is currently one of the most popular BL series. Unfortunately, due to Rooster Teeth’s closure by Warner Bros., RWBY is not fully available for online streaming, but Volume 9 is available on Prime Video.

3. Netflix's Castlevania is an incredible vampire series

Based on Konami's Castlevania video game series, Castlevania (and its sequel Castlevania: Nocturne) on Netflix was directed by Sam and Adam Deats. Starting with Trevor Belmont’s journey, it introduces Dracula as the main antagonist after the unjust execution of his wife, Lisa Tepes. As hell unleashes across Wallachia, Trevor and Sypha awaken Alucard and embark on a bloody quest to calm the vengeful and grieving Dracula.

Produced by Powerhouse Animation Studios, Castlevania was initially presented as a "Netflix anime," although its style and atmosphere differ from typical modern anime. However, its elegant artistic style and dark tone are strongly reminiscent of Hellsing Ultimate by Madhouse, the more faithful anime adaptation of Kouta Hirano's dark Hellsing manga.
