5/ "Good! I'd rather be a pirate than die here."
Zoro makes this statement during his meeting with Luffy. Due to unconventional circumstances, Zoro becomes a prisoner on a marine base. The swordsman was originally a pirate hunter at this point in the series. The only reason he changed his career is because his future captain gave him an ultimatum. Zoro is all about survival; he will gladly accept any profession if it doesn't interfere with his goals.

Your rank doesn't matter to Zoro, especially in a fight. In the incident at Whiskey Peak, the first straw hat companion faces a slew of Baroque Works members. In Baroque Works, the lower the number, the higher the skill field status level within the company. However, Zoro is not impressed with the titles. His concern is who is the strongest.

After his duel with Warlord Mihawk, Zoro suffered serious injuries from which he has not recovered. Despite this, he still faces one of Arlong's buddies, Hachi, in the Arlong Park arc.
During his fight with Hachi, the swordsman collapses due to his injuries. Everyone thinks he is about to die, but somehow Zoro gets up. He then lets everyone know that he refuses to die, until he is able to fight Mihawk again. Death can't even kill his resolve.

When Chopper was the last addition to the crew, he noticed that everyone was independent and that Luffy did not force anyone to do anything. Zoro explains to Chopper that they are not an ordinary pirate crew and that Luffy is not an ordinary captain. Everyone knows his role on the ship, so there is no need to watch them. He later explains to Chopper that most people who claim to believe in teamwork will not pull their own weight when times get tough.

The first lieutenant of the straw hats takes his goal of being a swordsman very seriously. After a brutal defeat of Mihawk, Zoro turns around to face him, proudly. Zoro wants to look the person who defeated him in the eye, to show that he is not a coward. Once Zoro has said these words, the warlord gains a lot of respect for the young swordsman and decides to spare his life. He sees that the man has convictions and he is curious to see what Zoro will do with them.
