Gaara's motto was "self-love." He justified this by explaining that, to others, he is nothing more than a relic to be discarded. If everyone needs a purpose to exist, then Gaara stated that his purpose would be to love and fight only for himself, a true testament to the resilience of the desert shinobi.

A Jinchuuriki refers to an individual with one of the tail beasts sealed inside them. Gaara is one of them, alongside Naruto. Although the two may not get along or see each other at all at first, an unlikely friendship has blossomed between them.
One of Gaara's most moving lines in the entire series was when he described his friendship with Naruto by saying, "I was a Jinchuuriki, the embodiment of hate and power. I hated this world and all the people in it. I wanted to destroy it with my own hands. Exactly the same thing the Akatsuki is trying to do today. But one man, a Konoha ninja stopped me. I was his enemy, yet he cried for me! I hurt him, yet he called me his friend! He saved me!"
