Tengen (Jujutsu Kaisen)

Tengen, more commonly known as Master Tengen, is a major figure in Jujutsu Kaisen. He is an immortal exorcist residing in the Dead Star Pavilion beneath the Tokyo exorcism school, from where he masters all the barriers of Japan, including the exorcism institute.

Dating back to the Nara period (710 - 794), Tengen is one of the main players in the founding of the exorcism society. He is also the center of religious groups that worship him as a god, notably the Astral Cult.

Appearance

Tengen is a being over a thousand years old. He possesses the power of immortality, but not eternal youth. To maintain control over his fate, Tengen fuses with compatible humans. However, since Toji Fushiguro killed the previous human who was supposed to merge with Tengen 12 years ago, the latter was unable to initiate the Fusion, and his aging accelerated, as did his own consciousness, which became diluted.

His current form as we see it is not really him. His evolved soul is now everywhere in everything, and Tengen has in a way become the whole world. It's thanks to his barrier techniques that Tengen is still able to retain a physical body and consciousness of his own. His physical body, however, resides in the tree at the center of the Dead Star Pavilion. Today, Tengen's appearance is rather atypical: he has four completely white eyes and a cylindrical head devoid of any hair. He also wears a simple light-colored robe. Kenjaku notes the resemblance between Tengen's figure and that of Ryomen Sukuna during the Heian era.

Personality

Tengen seems to be a respectful, straightforward person, well-informed about events in the outside world and apparently wanting the best for mankind. They don't seem to mind awkward questions about his existence, especially his appearance, and are more than happy to help ordinary exorcists if it's in the best interests of everyone and mankind.

Tengen was willing to do whatever they could to help Yuji Itadori and the others stop Kenjaku, but in return asked that two members of his team stay behind to protect him from the master of plagues. Tengen strongly insisted on this, but only because his own safety is the key to humanity's survival.

History
Past

During the Nara period, Tengen helped spread Buddhism throughout Japan and established a moral code for exorcists. His preaching gave rise to religious groups such as the Astral Cult, who worshipped him as a god.

Endowed with a spell of immortality but not eternal youth, Tengen had to merge once every 500 years with compatible humans called "Stellar Plasma", in order to retain his humanity and not evolve.

Hidden Treasure Bow / Premature Death

In 2006, Tengen had to merge once again, and the Stellar Plasma was a young girl named Riko Amanai. Tengen appointed Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto to ensure the safety of the Plasma Stellaire until the Fusion, which took place on the evening of a full moon.

However, Riko is murdered by Toji Fushiguro, a contract killer for the Astral Cult. Despite this, Tengen has, against all odds, stabilized.

During the 30th Twin High School Tournament, intruders invade the school. Masamichi Yaga goes to protect Tengen.

When Mahito decides to break into the Tokyo school's storeroom, two of Tengen's guards are killed by him.

Although Tengen doesn't interact with the outside world, its abilities have been shown to be essential in reinforcing the magical barriers, pillars of the occult world, protecting exorcism schools and Japan themselves for thousands of years.

Exorcism

Inborn spell
Tengen possesses an immortality spell. Except that he ages, rather like a tree. The fact that he's getting older isn't a problem in itself, except that when he enters his decrepit phase, the spell is triggered and transforms his body. Tengen evolves. He leaves his humanity behind to become a superior being. According to him, when he's in this state, Tengen no longer has any consciousness. He is no longer himself. To avoid any danger, every 500 years he merges with a compatible human called the "Stellar Plasma" to renew his body and preserve his identity.

Today, Tengen was unable to merge with the previous Plasma Stellaire, Riko Amanai, 12 years ago. His aging has accelerated and his own consciousness has been diluted. His evolved soul is now everywhere in everything, in tune with the world.

Barrier Control

Tengen's other characteristic is his manipulation of barriers. He feeds the two barriers that protect exorcism schools and reinforces the barrier techniques used by the assistants of the two schools. Tengen's barriers change the appearance of the institutes every day, effectively concealing the existence of the exorcism schools. The Tokyo school's cursed storeroom is also protected by a barrier that manipulates over a thousand doors, only one of which is connected to the storeroom containing the cursed relics and objects. However, Tengen's barrier is more about concealment than protection. As long as someone finds the entrance, getting in is not difficult.

The Dead Star Pavilion is the basis of all the barriers in Japan, and is the origin of all the barriers in Japan. The tree in which Tengen lives is protected by a different barrier from that around the schools, and only people he has invited can hope to enter.

Continuum Barrier (くせいけっかい, Kusei Kekkai): Each room in the labyrinth that stretches just above the Dead Star Pavilion is part of the Continuum Barrier, one of Tengen's barriers. Tengen can shape the area to his liking, and information about everything that happens there is always transmitted to him.
