Serpico is one of the main characters of the series. He is a servant and illegitimate son of the noble Vandimion family who would join Guts' traveling party with his half-sister Farnese .

Personality
Despite his miserable upbringing, Serpico stands out for his politeness, his gentlemanliness and his sincerity. He is very protective of Farnese, his half-sister, and caters to her every whim, considering her a guardian angel for saving him from his former life on the streets. Although Farnese has abused Serpico in the past, her safety and well-being are Serpico's highest priority. Serpico had developed an aversion to how much Farnese admired Guts, fearing that his inner darkness was the death of his half-sister. However, after joining Guts' party and sailing to Elfhelm, Serpico quickly learned to trust the Black Swordsman and the rest of the group, fighting alongside the group and frequently conversing with them and sympathizing with their struggles. His relationship with Farnese has changed since his long affair with his party and the arrival of Roderick .

Serpico learned at an early age that revenge begets revenge and avoided creating conflict situations as much as possible. Farnese sometimes forced him into duels with other nobles who insulted his honor, but, although he was always much better than his opponent, he chose to deliberately end it in a draw, being well aware that the nobles would come to hate him and try to redeem themselves through revenge. Due to a difficult upbringing, he learned to hide his emotions up his sleeve, often hiding his true nature behind a facade of incompetence and naivety.
As he abandons his act and becomes serious, Serpico holds a calculating and cautious presence for him, even threatening his future comrade Guts on numerous occasions. He becomes cold and unemotional, justifying his less moral actions by the means to protect those he loves.
Despite his skill and sometimes off-putting personality, Serpico is extremely uncomfortable around fire and dislikes the sight of blood, making him an unlikely warrior. His fear of fire stems from the fact that Farnese forced Serpico to burn his mother at the stake to prove that he was not the son of a heretic.

Capabilities
Physical capabilities
Serpico is an exceptionally gifted and skilled fencer, second only to Guts in terms of swordplay. Farnese states that he could defeat the nobles in fencing with one hand tied behind his back and was angry that he held back in order to keep both fighters alive. At first he doesn't seem like much of a threat at all, but when Guts heads to Farnese during the hunt for the black swordsman, it seems that Serpico is responsible for throwing a branch at Guts' arrow to immobilize him. However, Serpico's great skill is not enough to make him a match for Guts in a head-on fight, causing him to tilt other factors in his favor to stay ahead of the game. However, the sylph cloak and sylph sword make him much more agile and boost his offensive abilities. His speed and reflexes are particularly remarkable, as in his second encounter with Guts, he was able to dodge point-blank shots from Guts' automatic crossbow and steal a small bomb from Guts to blind him and escape. During this encounter, Guts noted that fighting him was much more difficult than fighting the pseudo-apostle of the Great Goat, whom he had killed a short time before.
Serpico is also a very good cook and the group often looks forward to the meals he prepares. Serpico has been fighting Apostles every day alongside Guts and the others, gaining more experience in battle. He was quick enough to save Farnese and lift her one-handed so she wouldn't fall off the Tower of Conviction.
Tactical capabilities
Serpico is used to acting docile, incompetent or both in order to bring down the guards of the enemies. In truth, he is neither and is quite intelligent. He acts quickly and is a cunning strategist; the first time he and Guts clash, he is able to survive a direct hit, and the second time, he cleverly puts Guts in a difficult situation where he cannot draw his sword and is able to escape by quickly grabbing a miniature bomb from Guts and using it to cover his escape.
Equipment
- Rapier: Serpico has been known to use it several times on humans, as Farnese's bodyguard, he is very good at fencing. He kept the weapon even after receiving his Sylph gear and was seen using it next to the Sylph Sword.
- Sylph Sword : Given by Schierke, with the "Wind Cloak", he can easily cut Trolls, Daka or any other normal size being using what seems to be air pressure. He is able to use several instances of this phenomenon at once, allowing Serpico to kill several enemies at once. However, even under a full moon (which is supposed to increase the power of the weapon's magic), he was unable to cut through the main tentacle of a sea slug.
- Sylph Cloak: Of the same origin and properties as "Wind Sword", it makes its light body more buoyant thus increasing its jump height in a way comparable to flight, aerial maneuverability, mobility, etc. and can summon strong winds to deflect attacks and projectiles. It pairs very well with the Wind Sword as both responsibly made a wind pressure barrier capable of dispersing a Ganishka lightning strike . It has the same kind of Sylph spirit and the pair of items has a pretty strong attachment to Serpico because when Schierke offered him the items again, he jumps on him (controlled by the wind spirits).
The story
The bastard child of the head of the Vandimion family, Federico Vandimion, and a former Vandimion maid, from an early age he had to care for his sick mother. He often fought with teenagers who wanted his food and medicine. When his mother found out, she reminded him that he was of noble blood and that he should prepare himself because his noble father would come for them. She handed him his locket which contained a picture of herself and Master Vandimion. It was discovered by Farnese when he was 10 years old. He had been beaten by a group of teenagers and was lying in the snow when Farnese passed by and ordered her servants to "load the child into the cart, we'll take him home". After this point, Serpico's life became the property of Farnese. She would make him jump out of windows, have the family dogs chase him and even make him swim in rapids. Once he followed Farnese into the woods behind his family palace. She took him to her sacred place where she burned "bad things" like a pet bird that didn't like him. Serpico later discovered that when Farnese was younger, she went out of the palace and participated in the burning of heretics. When her father told her to throw away one of her toys because it was old, she burned it later that night. This toy symbolized her relationship with her father. Serpico was there with a blanket for Farnese. There Serpico took the place of his toy and their relationship deepened into friendship as well as master and servant. One day he was stopped in the hallway by the master of the house, Farnese's father. It was the first time he had seen him. Master Vandimion asked to see the medallion around Serpico's neck. It was then that Serpico realized that it was his father. After some discussion, Vandimion told him that he could not recognize Serpico as his son because his three other sons were locked in a battle for the right of succession. What he offered Serpico was noble status and steady advancement in rank; in exchange, Serpico was not to tell anyone that he was his son and to look after Farnese.
For the next seven years, Serpico would accompany Farnese to almost every event. Because of Farnese's status, she was constantly asked to dance, which she always refused and even insulted the acquiring man. This would make the nobles angry because Farnese would then dance with Serpico all night. They resented him discussing as an outrage to his common birth. A duel would normally occur every time after the ball. He often visited his mother. Her illness had advanced to the point where she no longer saw her son but the noble man she had fallen in love with years ago.

Suddenly, one day, Master Vandimion returned to the castle, wanting Farnese to marry the son of another rich family. That night, Farnese went to her crematorium where she was contemplating her marriage. Serpico found her standing there naked, she instantly took him in her arms, declaring that they were both deformed and asking him to run away with her. Serpico knew she was developing feelings for him so he refused her offer. When he returned to the mansion, Farnese had set it on fire. Unbeknownst to Farnese, a chandelier was about to fall on her until Serpico saved her. The next morning, Master Vandimion annulled Farnese's marriage and sent her to a convent with Serpico.
Years of peace passed as in the convent. Farnese's status gave him the role of captain of the knights of the sacred iron chain. This was not because of her fighting skill or tactical thinking, but because tradition says that the captain must be a woman. Serpico naturally joined the holy iron chain and reached the rank of herald. The pair of them were then introduced to the second in command, Azan.
The knights of the holy iron chain acted as ceremonial guards who carried out the order of the churches and burned heretics. Serpico knew that these people were not Satanists, but people who were rebelling against the money-grabbing churches. Even though he knew that this could have been his fate, his loyalty to Farnese was greater than his disgust for their duties. Finally, he found himself face to face with his mother at the stake. As he whispered her name, Farnese overheard and denied that she was his mother. Farnese demanded that he burn her personally to prove it.
