Riza Hawkeye

Riza Hawkeye is an officer as well as the personal subordinate and bodyguard of Colonel Roy Mustang.

She is a sharpshooter and firearms specialist, making her an invaluable asset to the Colonel both in the office and on the battlefield.

Appearance

Riza Hawkeye is a very attractive woman with a moderately muscular yet curvy body. She has long blonde hair reaching the middle of her back and brown eyes. Although she wore her hair short in her youth and during her deployment in Ishval, she began growing it out in 1910 after becoming familiar with Winry Rockbell. Each of her ears is pierced with a silver earring. Riza often wears a short-sleeved black turtleneck sweater under her military uniform.

In the 2009 anime and manga, she has a large tattoo covering most of her back, with a significant portion obscured by burn scars inflicted by Colonel Mustang. She always wears clothing designed to conceal the tattoo.

Personality

Riza is calm, with a serious yet courteous demeanor. Hawkeye is regarded by her peers as the model of a perfect soldier: strictly disciplined and highly rational, she rarely relaxes at work and is usually in charge of keeping her colleagues in line.

Although she may appear stern and rigid on the outside, Riza is not as cold and distant as she might seem. Her softer side tends to show through her interactions with younger characters, such as the Elric brothers and Winry Rockbell, and she is often seen being gentle with her pet. Highly disciplined, Riza takes her work very seriously. When she meets Winry Rockbell, Riza reveals that she doesn’t like the military either, because she is sometimes forced to kill. However, when Alphonse Elric later refers to her weapons as “tools of destruction,” she corrects him by saying her guns are “tools of protection.” While in the 2003 anime she is seen using her guns to intimidate coworkers into doing their jobs, in the manga (and the 2009 anime), she treats her weapons with far more seriousness and never draws her gun without the intent to kill.

Past

After losing her mother at a relatively young age, Riza Hawkeye was raised by her father, Berthold, who, despite his meager income as a civilian alchemist, managed to provide his daughter with a respectable education. As she approached adulthood, Riza became acquainted with her father’s young apprentice, Roy Mustang. Although they were the only living members of their family, father and daughter remained distant—Berthold was absorbed in his research, and Riza did not understand his passion. Nevertheless, he inscribed his notes on flame alchemy onto her back to keep the knowledge from falling into the wrong hands. In 1905, when Riza was in her late teens, her father died of an unknown illness.

With no relatives to turn to, Riza accepted Roy’s help in arranging her father's funeral. At the burial, Roy told her that if she ever needed him, she could find him in the military. He inadvertently revealed his dream of making the country a better place and serving the people of Amestris. Riza found his ambition charming and informed him that her father’s secrets about flame alchemy had survived on her back. Hoping he would use them to help the people, she showed him the code. After deciphering it, Roy left to prepare for the State Alchemist exam. In the meantime, Riza enrolled in the military academy a year later.

In 1908, following her excellent performance at the academy and a shortage of manpower in the region, Riza was deployed to the front lines of the Ishvalan Civil War as a sniper. Her exceptional skills earned her the nickname “Hawk’s Eye,” and although her hands were stained with the blood of her targets, she was also forced to witness the massacres carried out by her fellow soldiers and State Alchemists. It was only a matter of time before she reunited with Roy Mustang—now known as the “Flame Alchemist”—on the battlefield. After greeting him for the first time in years, she expressed her despair that the ideals she had clung to in her youth had devolved into senseless slaughter. The military she had believed was there to serve the people had instead been ordered to murder innocent civilians, and the alchemy she had thought was a gift for humanity had been used to commit terrible atrocities.

By the time the war ended in 1909, Riza was tormented by guilt—not just for the lives she had taken, but for her choice to join the military and entrust her father’s secrets to Mustang. On the final day of the war, she dug a grave for a dead Ishvalan child and asked Roy to burn the tattoo on her back. He partially did so, not only to prevent the rise of another Flame Alchemist but also to free her from her father’s legacy and the burden of alchemy. With peace restored, Riza chose to remain in the military and was assigned directly under Mustang's command in East City.

In addition to her high-level administrative and clerical skills, Lieutenant Hawkeye is an expert sharpshooter and firearms specialist. Whether armed with a bolt-action rifle, shotgun, sniper rifle, handgun, or even dual-wielding pistols, she is well-known for never missing her mark. In the manga, she earned a formidable reputation during the Ishvalan Civil War. A true professional, Hawkeye can disassemble, clean, and reassemble a firearm with expert speed and rarely enters battle with fewer than two loaded weapons. Furthermore, she is highly skilled in combat tactics and covert operations and is instinctively aware of the danger posed by Homunculi, more so than by ordinary humans. This heightened perception is likely due to her keen instincts and extensive combat experience.
