Rin Okumura is the main protagonist of the story. He and his slightly younger twin brother, Yukio, were born to Satan and Yuri Egin. He studies at the True Cross Academy to become an exorcist. Rin wishes to become a knight and defeat his sire.

Apparence
In her demonic form, Rin has two blue flames floating above her head as horns, long elf ears, her eyes turn bright blue, her pupils turn red and are distorted, but most importantly, her body is dotted with blue flames (one of which is concentrated at the tip of her tail).
Before joining True Cross Academy, Rin wore a blue hoodie, a pink t-shirt and black pants decorated with chains on the side, revealing a rebellious nature. He also had a white jacket with several pockets and black mittens. Due to his involvement in various fights, Rin had bandages on his cheeks and hands (he was treated by Yukio).
Since he joined True Cross Academy, he has been wearing the school uniform, which consists of a white shirt, red, black and white tie, black jacket and pants. Rin keeps the Kurikara on his shoulder, wrapped in a red cover with black ties. In class, he uses a clip to pull up his bangs which used to bother him for work.
Personality
Rin has a protective and supportive personality. He can be very violent and get into fights (this may be caused by his demonic side), but has a good heart. He supports his friends and tries to encourage and help them. He also seems very protective of Yukio, and aims to surpass him one day. However, Yukio often finds Rin annoying because of his frequent impulsiveness and stupidity, which causes Yukio to look down on Rin to the point where it is difficult for Rin to be taken seriously by Yukio and even others, causing Rin to desperately try to win his brother's approval. He gets hurt when Yukio accuses him of killing his father by pointing his gun at him, so Rin warns him not to insult him by saying that he would not fight his own brother.
Although he usually hides it, Rin loved his adoptive father very much, and has only good things to say about him. He deeply regrets that the last thing they did was fight, which led to Satan possessing him. Like Yukio, he takes any insult to Fujimoto very seriously, and in fact got very angry when Shura claimed that he died like a coward. He also doesn't like people insulting Yukio, whom he loves and respects very much. However, Rin is surprisingly level-headed and laid back, and rarely gets angry without a good reason.
Rin is often shown as being able to relate to people easily and connect their feelings to his own, as with Shiemi Moriyama's grief over her grandmother and Ryuji Suguro's ambition to defeat Satan. He is also able to understand Shiemi's desperate desire for friends since he grew up with almost no friends, being constantly harassed by bullies as well as his reputation for being "a demon." In general, he is often the first to try to make people feel better if they are feeling bad. He is not an academic person, even though he was able to earn a junior high degree and become an Exwire.
Unlike his brother, Rin is immature, which leads others to believe that he is younger than Yukio. It has been noted by several people that, despite being twinned, Rin and Yukio are extremely different. He is a strong head (literally as well as metaphorically, he was able to stop a demon charging him directly with his forehead) and is often very open with his friends. However, when his friends discover his demonic heritage, they are afraid of him, thinking that he is unstable and could lead to disaster. However, they slowly got used to him and accepted him during the Kyoto Arc.
Despite his usual hot-blooded attitude, Rin is often shown to be more sensitive than he lets on, especially when he cries after reading a moving manga. He is also shown as having a soft spot for animals. At the beginning of the manga, the reason why he had a fight with Reiji Shiratori and his delinquent gang while they were torturing pigeons. He also tries (successfully) to tame Kuro without killing him after hearing that he was once Shiro's pet.
Past
During the Blue Night (anime), Satan killed many exorcists to find someone he could possess without any harmful effect in order to save Yuri Egin, who was about to be executed by the Vatican for being impregnated by the evil one. Shiro Fujimoto and Mephisto Pheles were called by Yuri's father, Ernest Frederik Egin, to find and kill Yuri and the children of her union with Satan. They later discovered Yuri in the forest with her newborn twins, whom she named Rin and Yukio. She died shortly after giving birth.
Instead of killing the two little boys, Mephisto decided to seal the demonic powers of Rin, who was the only one producing blue flames, inside the Kurikara, to help Shiro take care of them as if they were his own children. Mephisto made a bet with Fujimoto, promising that if he failed to raise the twins as normal children and if Rin's true nature resurfaced, Mephisto would get custody of them (anime).
During his childhood, Rin led a normal human life, but his strength and anger seemed unnatural, so much so that all the children and even the teachers were afraid of him and considered him a demon, calling him a "demon child". He often got into fights with his classmates, and the only one who could stop him was Shiro. Rin always admired his "father" and wanted to be like him when he grew up. He also always protected his brother Yukio from bullies, and encouraged him to pursue his dream of becoming a doctor. When he was younger, he learned to cook, an activity that became his natural talent.
History in the anime

Rin appears for the first time punching Shiratori, who runs away with his friends calling him a demon. He wipes the blood dripping from his nose, and wonders how he got there. It is later revealed that the boys wanted to kill a pigeon but Rin interfered.
He then returns to Southern Cross Boys Monastery where he is reprimanded by his adoptive father Shiro Fujimoto who tells him that he was fired from his job. We meet Yukio, his younger twin brother who is about to enter the True Cross Academy. While arguing with other members of the monastery, we suddenly see blue flames coming out of a lamp on the floor. Rin is being treated for the last time by her brother due to the latter's departure to the boarding school. Rin encourages his brother in his dream to become a doctor. He admits to him that he is also stressed by his habit of fighting and his inability to keep a stable job. The members of the monastery lend him a suit and shoes for his interview in a store. He sees his father reassuring a little girl named Yui and comes to meet him saying that the job of an exorcist is complicated, since he has to eliminate things that do not exist. Shiro shows him how to make his tie and teases him about his maturity.
During the interview, the boss is surprised that a schoolboy asks for a job, Rin answers that he doesn't really like school. She first asks him to stack boxes in front of the store, and is amazed when she realizes that the task is completed in a few minutes. However, as Rin is carrying the last box, he trips and the contents spill on the boss's head. He then carries out various tasks where he hurts her. He is reprimanded and feels sorry for himself; when a saleswoman offers him a pot of cheap noodles, he finds that they are awful, so he offers to replace the saleswoman and cooks delicious fried noodles in order to sell a sauce and smoked sardines, which is a success. The boss tastes his dish and decides to hire him. He announces the news to Yukio and to the other members of the monastery. Shiro tells him to come back to share with them the last dinner of his brother in the monastery.
On his way back, he sees Yui running after his scarf asking a demon to give it back to him. Rin catches her and while trying to give it back, he sees the demon slipping out of his hands. He runs after it but the demon knocks over a pile of boxes and Rin protects the little girl they were about to fall on. The mother of the little girl runs. Meanwhile, the members of the monastery wait around the table in silence for Rin. Yukio goes to look for his brother and finds him on a swing, with his head down. He tells him that he has been dismissed but Rin can't explain why, not understanding what has happened. Back at the monastery, the twin brothers see the little girl and her father who come to thank Rin. Her father says that Yui is dizzy but Rin tells him that someone is messing with her. Her father is upset and heads to the school but Yui stops him saying that it is evil spirits that are bothering her. However, he doesn't believe her and Rin gets angry telling him that he should take her seriously. He is cut off by Shiro who gives him a blow in the back, and gives the little girl a four-leaf clover to protect her. He asks the father not to blame her because she needs her parents' support, especially now. Rin is surprised that the father listened to Shiro. The latter tells him that Rin is too immature to give lessons, and that he is grounded too because of the note his ex-boss filed with the ministry for what he broke.
The next day, Rin wakes up and Yukio is already gone. Looking out the window he sees coaltars in the air, demons fond of darkness, humidity and sorrow and wonders why nobody sees anything. He is stopped by Shiratori, the boy he had a fight with and goes out to confront them despite his exit punishment. Rin wonders what is happening to Shiratori because of his new sharp teeth and the coaltars which turn around his head. The latter asks him how much money he has to give him in order to avoid some rumors when he enters the academy of the True Cross. Rin tells him that he doesn't want anything but Shiratori laughs at him saying that Yukio and Rin don't have enough money to study. Rin hits him because he hates being laughed at.
There, he sees Shiratori transform into a demon and is tackled to the ground by the friends of the blond. He doesn't understand why nobody seems to notice. The demon grabs a piece of burning iron and one of his friends tries to stop him, however Shiratori kicks him. Seeing the iron getting closer to him, Rin loses control and blue flames surrounding his body throw his attackers who flee. The demon tells him that these flames are the proof that he is the son of Satan, as he thought. He introduces himself, Astaroth, and asks him to come with him to join Satan. At this moment, Shiro arrives and chant the demon from Shiratori's body. Shiro teaches him the existence of Assiah and Gehenna, and of the demons who manage to invest some bodies of their world. He announces that Rin has to take shelter, because now he is going to attract interest. Rin does not understand and wonders who he is. Shiro answers that he is the child of a demon, specifically Satan. Shiro and Rin flee to the monastery.
Recalling his childhood memories, Rin remembers that he always knew he was different. He was a violent, angry child who was even called a demon child. On the way, they meet many demons that Shiro hunts. When they arrive at the monastery, he gives him the Kurikara, a very old magic sword which is supposed to contain Rin's demonic power, and orders him not to give it to anyone or to draw it, because Rin would become a demon and would not be able to return to his human form. Rin learns that he is the only one to have inherited Satan, Yukio being too weak to receive this power, but also that his father kept silent because he wanted to raise him as a human.
The demons manage to enter the monastery, Astaroth has their head. Shiro hides Rin in the trapdoor and tells him to run away and hide where the demons won't find him. He gives him a phone with a single registered number that he must call as soon as he leaves the monastery. However, Rin doesn't want to run away and realizes that he is a demon when he remembers his childhood. Rin comes out of hiding and sees the members of the monastery injured by Astaroth. When he understands that the demons want him, he decides to leave, so that his father is rid of him. He argues with Shiro by telling him that they are not of the same blood, that they are strangers, and that he plays the model father simply because he has to. Shiro gives him a slap and orders him to go and pack his bags. At this moment, he falls on the ground and becomes possessed by Satan. Rin runs to him and Satan speaks to him for the first time. He makes members of the monastery set fire to themselves to save Rin. Satan opens the door to Gehenna by cutting Shiro's wrist. Rin's body becomes strewn with blue flames as he yells at Satan not to come near him, to which Satan laughs. The latter grabs him to take him to the Gehenna, and throws him in the door which absorbs him. He announces to him that he will be reborn demon. However, Shiro takes back the control and stabs himself in order to chase away the evil, saying that Satan will give him back his son.
Rin watches in fear as his father falls into the magic door. Rin rushes to his father. He remembers asking Shiro if he is a child of a demon, and he reassures him that he is human. He then catches the Kurikara, and takes him out of his furnace, despite the warning of Shiro and a member of the monastery, in order to save him. He then takes the form of a demon with elf ears, pointed teeth and a black tail. He destroys the gate of Gehenna with a simple sword stroke. As day breaks, he puts away his sword and cries when he sees the body of his dead father. Yukio arrives at the monastery and runs to Shiro.
At the funeral of his adoptive father, Rin is seen standing alone in front of his grave with his hands in his pockets. He remembers his words, and decides to call the number on the phone he gave him. He then meets Mephisto Pheles, exorcist of the Knights of the True Cross. Mephisto is ordered to eliminate Rin, despite the fact that he was supposed to protect him, and offers him either to kill them and run away, or to be killed, or to kill himself. However, Rin says that he wants to be an exorcist too, no matter what they think, because he is not the son of the demon, but the son of Shiro Fujimoto. Mephisto asks him what he plans to do after becoming an exorcist, to which Rin replies that he would kill Satan. Mephisto is hilarious, because the son of Satan plans to be an exorcist but accepts Rin's choice and warns him that he might regret his choice because of his destiny full of suffering.

Overview
Rin became aware of her true identity after Kurikara could no longer contain the blue flames of Satan, her true father ( the flames locked by Fujimoto Shiro, see Rin's story in the first paragraph ). These events led to the death of his adoptive father and guardian, the father and Exorcist Fujimoto Shiro. He dies at the hands of Satan himself, who at the same time tried to send Rin to Gehenna, the kingdom of demons.
After the funeral of his adoptive father, Rin was confronted with Mephisto Phelès and the Knights of the True Cross. Mephisto offered him to kill or be killed or to commit suicide. Instead, he asked to become an Exorcist, an idea that amused Mephisto. Rin was then personally enrolled by Mephisto in the True Cross Academy. Since then, he has been pursuing his goal of becoming a Holy Paladin to defeat Satan. He is currently an Aspirant and is trying to become a Knight (an Exorcist who fights with a sword). Rin can tap into the power he inherited from Satan by using his katana. The sword, once taken out of its scabbard, acts as a portal between Gehenna and Assiah, revealing Rin's original form.
Familiar Demon
Rin is always accompanied by a familiar Cat Sith demon, Kuro, who originally belonged to Father Fujimoto. Kuro can be useful in battle as he is able to grow impressively and can become a mount when the opportunity arises.
Powers and Abilities
Great stamina : Rin has a great vitality, even when he takes powerful blows from Amaimon, he continues his fight even though their forces were very unequal. On the other hand, he is sensitive to holy water.
Agility : In his demonic form, Rin can jump higher and run faster than a normal human being. According to Suguro and Shima, he is really fast (even in his "human" form).
Pyrokinesis : Rin can create and control blue flames inherited from his biological father, which are extraordinarily powerful and deadly. He learns little by little to use them better. His flames don't usually seem to burn him but he feels the heat and was already almost "consumed" by their power.
Telepathy: A gift inherited from his demonic side, he can communicate mentally with surrounding demons. Nowadays, he can more and more sense their presence and know approximately their power.
Sword Fighting: As the owner of Kurikara, he can become a knight, an Exorcist using swords on the battlefield. As he is still training his katana, Rin often relies on his strength and blue flames in battle.
Regeneration: Due to his demonic heritage, Rin can heal very quickly from serious wounds. He is also immune to Miasma or other substances created by energy-sucking demons that cause great pain to humans.
Cooking: Having learned to cook at a young age, Rin is very good at it. He has mastered Japanese gourmet cooking.
