Epic battles of vengeance, competition, and power have played a major role in shaping the landscape of Japanese anime as fans know it today. At the heart of this action are the swordsmen.
Fighters practicing a special intermediate martial art, defined by noble warriors in the style of Kurosawa, epic confrontations, and displays of overwhelming power. In some anime, swordsmanship skills are complemented by other abilities, such as Tanjiro's water breathing techniques in Demon Slayer or Haki in One Piece.

Yet, it is ultimately their simple weapons that make anime swordsmen characters, like Himura Kenshin, so endearing and naturally stoic. They have perfected their craft and spirit to become the best swordsmen possible. That being said, some anime swordsmen stand out entirely from the others due to their supernatural powers or exceptional dedication to their art.
Updated on February 21, 2025 by Natasha Elder: Many renowned anime swordsmen have become famous for their exceptional skills and extraordinary abilities. Swordsmen like Erza Scarlet have combined their magical powers with impressive swordsmanship to reach a higher level. We wanted to highlight the remarkable talent of even more anime swordsmen and adapt the imagery to showcase their unique techniques.
30. Kento Nanami Combines His Powerful Cursed Technique with a Dull Sword
Nanami is best known for his 7:30 ratio technique.
Kento Nanami, from Jujutsu Kaisen, combines his powerful cursed technique with a dull sword capable of piercing through anything, even with protection. This sword is especially effective with his Ratio Technique: once the weak point of his target is identified, the blade allows him to destroy it easily. Nanami's Innate Technique gives him a significant advantage in combat.
Even though he has to create multiple weak points by weakening his opponent, Nanami's precision never betrays him. He can pierce moving targets with incredible speed and impressive accuracy. As a Grade 1 sorcerer, it’s easy to see why jujutsu professionals respect Nanami. However, Nanami lacks the raw power needed to surpass the final ranks of anime swordsmen.
29. Olivier Armstrong Wields a Saber in Battle
Olivier can even fight homunculi without alchemy.
Swords are rarely used in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, as firearms and alchemy are generally much more powerful in this steampunk series. However, Major General Olivier Armstrong wields a military saber with finesse in battle. For officers like her, these weapons are usually ceremonial, but pragmatic Olivier knows how to use them excellently in combat.
Olivier is also a skilled marksman, but she prefers her saber, likely because it never runs out of ammunition in battle. She once slashed General Raven across the chest and then used the same blade against the homunculus Sloth on the Promised Day. Although Olivier fought well, she needed the help of her younger brother and the Curtis to finish the job, demonstrating that despite her exceptional talent, other anime swordsmen surpass her.
28. Yato Fights Spirits with His Dual-Bladed Yukine
Yato fights fiercely for his friends.
Yato is a humble god from Noragami who seeks to regain his once-glorious reputation by reclaiming his followers. To achieve this, Yato rebrands himself as the God of Delivery, but his path is often obstructed by spirits. To fight them, Yato uses his new weapon, Yukine, which transforms into a wrapped-handle katana.
Though Yato and Yukine initially struggle to cooperate, they eventually bond so deeply that Yukine transforms into two blades. With his new weapons, Yato becomes one of the best swordsmen in anime, a nearly invincible force against those who wish harm to him or his beloved Hiyori Ikki. Among Yato's special techniques are the Tear, Split, Explosion, and Scarlet Bloom, all highly effective.
27. Stain Uses His Bloodcurdle Quirk in Conjunction with His Swordsmanship
Stain’s quirk is why he killed so many professional heroes with ease.
Stain, the hero killer from My Hero Academia, slaughtered countless heroes with his paralyzing quirk combined with his exceptional swordsmanship. A villain from My Hero Academia with impeccable morals, Stain ardently seeks to rid society of false heroes driven by fame and fortune. He targets heroes like Ingenium, whom he believes have strayed from their true purpose.
Stain’s quirk forces him to cut someone and then lick their blood to paralyze them. The paralysis duration depends on the person’s blood type. Without a long katana, Stain's quirk would be nearly useless in most fights. So, if Stain hadn’t been such a skilled swordsman, he would never have become such a threat to heroes.
26. Aki Hayakawa Only Uses His Sword as a Last Resort
Aki prefers to fight with his Fox Devil contract.
Most anime swordsmen can wield their weapon of choice without consequences, but this is not the case for Aki Hayakawa from Chainsaw Man. He can only use his sword as a last resort because it shortens his lifespan. Aki has a contract with the Curse Devil and wields a nail-shaped sword. To use the contract, he must point the nail at his target and say "fire."
The Curse Devil’s hand projects the nail to the spot Aki pointed at. After three strikes, Aki can summon the powerful Curse Devil to permanently injure or kill the target. Although he also has a contract with the Fox Devil, he loses this connection after facing the Sword Man. That said, Aki couldn’t do anything against the Snake Devil, proving that even his powers have limits.
25. Arthur Boyle's Strength Lies in His Mind
Arthur's swordsmanship reaches a new level when he acts like King Arthur.
In the shōnen anime Fire Force, both heroes and villains use a surprising variety of Ignition abilities, or fire-based powers, such as second and third-generation pyrokinetics. One of the most experimental Ignition abilities belongs to Arthur Boyle, who focuses intense plasma energy onto a simple wooden handle. With this ability, Arthur can form a blazing energy blade, essentially a lightsaber.
Arthur has only grown stronger and faster since his debut, and he can even improve his performance by imagining himself as King Arthur. This is a double-edged sword, so to speak, because if his role-playing is interrupted, Arthur can collapse in battle, regardless of the power of his blade. As a result, he occupies a rather modest position among his fellow anime swordsmen.
24. Hakuro Taught Swordsmanship to Many of Rimuru's Allies
Hakuro is highly respected among Rimuru’s friends.
A surprising variety of magical powers and weapons are used in That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, including swords, which appear quite frequently. Shion, who uses the massive Hercules sword in combat, or her ogre companion Benimaru, also an excellent swordsman, are examples of formidable swordsmen. However, none can match the mastery of the old ogre Hakuro.
Hakuro can easily dominate any opponent in a sword duel, even when they have an unfair advantage. However, he rarely engages in serious fights. He is often seen training Rimuru’s goblin allies to improve their combat effectiveness. A tough but fair mentor, he is the ideal coach for Rimuru's monster friends.
23. Levi Ackerman Reinvented the Art of Swordsmanship
No Titan can touch Levi when he fights.
Members of the Survey Corps in Attack on Titan have, in many ways, reinvented sword combat. Sword fights generally involve close-range, precise battles. In this story, however, this same skill is combined with explosive, exhilarating speed, as swordsmen launch themselves at their targets to take them down. In the terrifying world of Attack on Titan, few are as respected and feared as Levi Ackerman.
Though much smaller than the Titans and his fellow soldiers, Levi’s tactical mind and swordsmanship allow him to rival others. Even the Beast Titan couldn't match this super-powered, deadly character. While he is rightfully considered humanity's most powerful soldier, Levi has his limits when facing overpowering villains or other anime swordsmen enhanced with supernatural abilities.

22. Polnareff's Stand, Silver Chariot, is a fantastic swordsman
Capable of cutting through fire, Silver Chariot is a force to be reckoned with.
Thanks to his powerful Stand, Silver Chariot, Jean-Pierre Polnareff from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure can be considered one of the best swordsmen in anime. Appearing in armor, Silver Chariot evokes medieval knights, which is quite fitting given its incredible swordsmanship. While Silver Chariot obeys Polnareff's whims, like most Stands, it exhibits a certain discernment in battle, as Polnareff rarely gives it direct orders.
Silver Chariot possesses enhanced speed and strength, along with remarkable precision. These three combined elements make it difficult for opponents to face it. Silver Chariot is fast enough to dodge bullets and deflect gunfire. Under pressure at close range, Silver Chariot can launch its sword at its target with great accuracy, even ricocheting it off other objects to reach its mark. This versatility makes Silver Chariot an exceptional anime swordsman.
21. Killer Bee wields multiple blades and later uses Samehada in battle
Killer Bee also has Jinchuriki powers to support him
All the Jinchuriki in the Naruto anime benefit from the immense chakra of a tailed beast, with Naruto Uzumaki and Gaara of the Sand being two prime examples. Later on, in Naruto: Shippuden, fans are introduced to the Jinchuriki of the Eight-Tails, a Cloud ninja named Killer Bee, or simply B. It quickly becomes apparent that Killer Bee is skilled, and not just because of his tailed beast.
Killer Bee was a dedicated swordsman who could wield not one, not two, but at least seven blades in combat, holding some in his knees or elbows to maximize his weapon usage. Holding his swords in all possible positions, Killer Bee would spin to slash at his enemies. Later in Naruto: Shippuden, Killer Bee obtained the living sword Samehada, a significant upgrade from his previous weapons.
20. Tanjiro Kamado has not yet reached his full potential in the anime
Tanjiro has used water-based and sun-based techniques
Tanjiro Kamado, a likable and new character in the world of anime swordsmen, quickly captivated the world through his adventures. Aside from his series' record-breaking sales, Tanjiro is a humble and ambitious outsider who amazed and inspired everyone with his battles against horrific creatures. His training has put his sword through many fantastic and demonic dangers.
With grace and power that could captivate any shōnen fan, Tanjiro has become a swordsman that everyone would love to see fight. His Water Breathing techniques have significantly improved since the beginning of the series, making him even more effective in combat. While his extraordinary abilities deserve recognition, other anime swordsmen possess even more impressive techniques, placing him at a respectable rank among other characters.
19. Ryuko Matoi wields half of a giant pair of scissors
Ryuko will use this power to avenge her father
Ryuko Matoi is a woman on a mission to eliminate the villain who killed her father in the Kill la Kill anime. Armed with only a giant pair of scissors and a smart uniform, she is ready to strike. With her Kamui Senketsu and scissor blade, Ryuko becomes a force of nature. She even defeated the most experienced members of the Four Council of Satsuki Kiryuin.
While Ryuko's sword skills are a bit rough at first, she eventually learns to work with Senketsu to control its power and use it to her advantage. With Senketsu, her scissor blade, and the help of her friends, Ryuko finally finds the justice she desires. However, she still has much to learn before she can fight at the level of the most powerful anime swordsmen.
18. Atomic Samurai can use his sword to protect others as a hero
Though he has trained others, Atomic Samurai is clearly in a league of his own
In a world filled with monsters, aliens, and other incredibly powerful and destructive beings, heroes become indispensable. The heroes of One-Punch Man help defend their world against threats but are also ranked for their popularity and, most importantly, their combat abilities. Atomic Samurai's swordsmanship earned him an S-rank. He is the fourth-highest ranked hero upon his introduction.
Atomic Samurai earned this title solely due to his mastery of fencing. His superhuman reflexes allow him to easily defend against most attacks, and his speed enables him to strike back before his opponent even notices. Additionally, he is a member of the Swordsmanship Masters Council – an order composed only of the best swordsmen – which further proves his talent. His knowledge also allows him to have several disciples, all respected heroes in their own right.
17. Hiei is incredibly fast with his strikes
Hiei is also capable of launching his weapon with precision
Hiei, from the classic Yu Yu Hakusho anime, is a remarkable swordsman. Using a "bushido" fighting style, Hiei underwent intense sword training before developing his incredibly fast techniques. He is so quick that he can strike his opponent 16 times in a second at his base level, and then increase his speed further with his powers. To top it off, he is also highly precise with his strikes.
One of Hiei's greatest sword techniques is the Flame Sword. In this move, Hiei channels demonic flames into the hilt of a broken sword to create a powerful attack. While he doesn't often use this power, believing it to be raw, it adds significant power to his usual strikes. His ability to incorporate external powers into his attacks makes Hiei one of the best swordsmen in anime.
16. Akame is a master of poisons
Akame can kill any living being with a single strike
Akame is the fearsome assassin from Akame Ga Kill!. Her special ability allows her to kill any living being with a single strike. With her sword Murasame, she can inject a deadly curse that rapidly infects anyone it touches. However, even without this curse, her opponents wouldn't survive long enough to tell the tale, given her incredible sword mastery.
Akame is a highly skilled super-soldier, capable of defeating all kinds of beasts and weapons thanks to her agility and decisive strikes. A seasoned swordswoman, Akame favors hand-to-hand combat, using martial attacks ranging from kicks to punches. Murasame is a blessing that prevents her enemies from realizing just how lethal she can be. Akame can also utilize a special performance enhancer called the Small War Horn, which boosts her strength.
15. Ezra Scarlet possesses swordsmanship and armor skills
Erza Scarlet's swordsmanship is sufficient to face the strongest fighters in the world.
Some Fairy Tail fans believe Natsu Dragneel is the main character, while others think it’s Lucy Heartfilia. However, according to rumors, everyone knows the true star of Fairy Tail is none other than Titania herself, Erza Scarlet. Erza is far more than a sword expert, as viewers quickly learn. She also masters her magical power, known as Requip: The Knight.
Additionally, Erza is skilled in all types of weapons designed to defeat rebellious mages and demons. However, Erza has repeatedly proven her talent and strength with a sword. Sometimes, Erza doesn't need to wear her armors, no matter how elaborate they are. Her swordsmanship is more than enough to defeat the toughest fighters in the world, though anime swordsmen are another matter, which explains her mid-tier ranking.
14. Jubei Kibigami is a renowned swordsman in Ninja Scroll
Jubei can even strike his enemies comfortably at a distance.
Jubei Kibigami, from Ninja Scroll, is loosely inspired by the famous samurai Yagyū Jūbē Mitsuyoshi. Therefore, it is no surprise that Jubei is also an exceptional swordsman. With a big heart, he often takes on risky missions for a modest fee, giving him extensive combat experience. At first glance, he may not seem like the strongest swordsman, lacking supernatural powers, but he is highly strategic.
The overwhelming opponents Jubei faces in Ninja Scroll all seem destined to defeat him due to their basic abilities. Yet, Jubei triumphs thanks to his intelligence, which allows him to discover his enemies' weaknesses and exploit them. Another clever tactic involves attaching a string to his sword to make it hard to disarm. He can also use his Wind Slash technique to attack enemies from a distance, giving him an additional combat advantage, allowing him to overcome direct power differences.
13. Afro is one of the best samurai in anime history
Not everyone can wear this headband like Afro does.
While many fondly remember Afro Samurai as the anime with Samuel L. Jackson, the intense action it contains should never be underestimated. Colder than the blade he wields and more powerful than Sam Jackson's voice, Afro is a brilliant, vengeful samurai seeking to avenge his father and become the world's greatest fighter. However, he is often hindered by others seeking to dethrone him and claim the title.
With numerous opportunities to showcase his deadly power, Afro is undoubtedly one of the best samurai in all anime. He can destroy bullets with his blade, demonstrating his speed. Although Afro is unquestionably excellent, his lack of supernatural powers puts him at a slight disadvantage against the greatest anime swordsmen.
12. Kirito applies his kendo training in a video game world
He is overpowered in any virtual game.
Kirito, from Sword Art Online, demonstrated how exciting combat in fantasy worlds can be by applying his kendo training to the virtual world. Though trapped in the game universe, Kirito never falters and lets his swordsmanship shine in critical moments. He used many named swords in Sword Art Online, each with different stats that enhance his swordsmanship.
Kirito dominated the ranks of the fictional Sword Art Online game, acquired exclusive abilities, and faced nightmarish bosses like the Bright Eyes. He also quickly eliminated some of the worst players in the community. Kirito masters many sword techniques in the series, including one-handed swordplay and dual wielding. Yet, Kirito would lose to some of the most powerful swordsmen in anime.
11. Gintoki Sakata single-handedly wiped out the Amanto hordes
Gintoki may be foolish, but his skills are formidable.
As comedic as Gintama is, the audience should never forget the legend of Gintoki Sakata. His nickname "White Yaksha" was given to him on the battlefields of the Joi War, when he single-handedly wiped out the Amanto hordes with brutality. As a testament to his devastating abilities, Gintoki was nicknamed Shiroyasha, or White Demon.
Though he abandoned the steel blade, Gin still manages to be incredibly powerful with his wooden sword from Lake Toya. With it, he can break free from the Shinsengumi's steel and cut through entire giant robots. Not to mention his epic battles against Yato King Hosen, Oboro, or Takasugi. Parodic characters are typically overpowered, but Gin makes his fights relaxed and easy, even compared to other parodic characters.
10. Clare is a monstrous half-Other heroine
Clare uses her intelligence and deep ingenuity in sword fights.
Clare is part of an elite group of demon-hunting knights, all of whom are women. These characters are simply known as Claymores. These knights undergo rigorous training and are infused with Yoma blood to perform the superhuman feats needed to defeat the Yomas, these ravenous creatures threatening humanity. Raised to succeed Teresa, the number one Claymore, Clare is a cold and calculating Claymore who uses her intelligence and deep ingenuity to fight monsters far stronger than herself.
Her excellent strategy and superior skill earn her a place among the elite swordsmen of anime. To prove she deserves recognition, Clare can also increase her speed using a technique called Quick Sword, which has a few drawbacks. Despite this, Clare fought alongside some of the best Claymores in the world, proving that rank isn’t everything.
9. It’s no surprise that Saber was crowned King Arthur
Saber's unparalleled sword skills are enhanced by the mighty Excalibur.
Artoria Pendragon, better known as Saber, is one of the best swordsmen and one of the most influential shonen heroines in the world of Japanese anime. Wielding the mighty Excalibur, she underwent intensive training that allows her to rival the greatest swordsmen in history. Saber has repeatedly proven she is a favorite in the Holy Grail War within the Fate franchise. Beyond her swordsmanship, Saber is an indispensable heroine, thanks to her vast experience.
Artoria has the combat sense and strategic mind needed to face an enemy, even off the battlefield. As a versatile noble warrior, Saber rightfully earns her title of "Saber." She even manages to defeat a monstrous dragon after it weakened her sacred sword. Artoria gathers courage and will to inspire her allies, ultimately leading to Vortigern's fall.
8. Mugen’s unpredictable movements make him an exceptional swordsman
Fighting without a defined form gives Mugen an advantage in many battles.
Mugen, from Samurai Champloo, is an incredible example of a character with a wild style, equally effective at dodging enemy attacks as he is at executing unpredictable movements. Blending the sordid, rough style of a true vagabond with a modern touch, this grimy hero manages to fuse various martial arts and swordsmanship with breakdance hip-hop. This technique is called Champloo Kendo.
Mugen consistently performs some of the most impressive figures ever seen on the battlefield and dance floor. With his nervous demeanor and tendency to use a few twisted moves, Mugen is undoubtedly one of the most dangerous samurai in all anime. He could defeat almost all other anime swordsmen, especially thanks to his ability to manipulate Ki.
7. The absence of certain body parts became an advantage for Hyakkimaru
Hyakkimaru's blades often act as extensions of his body.
Hyakkimaru, from Dororo, was a sacrificial lamb for his father's ambitions to bring prosperity and power to the country. At a young age, he was stripped of several limbs and organs, then sacrificed to various demons. Brought back to life by a wandering prosthetist, Hyakkimaru traveled the country searching for the demons who took his body.

Hyakkimaru uses his innate ability to perceive the true nature of people and exploits the heightened senses that result from it. This allows him to excel in sword fighting at a superhuman level. For a time, his blades were even part of his prosthetics, allowing him to attack from various angles. After facing samurai and demons, Hyakkimaru leaves behind an impressive trail of corpses.
6. Kyojuro Rengoku almost defeated a Higher Moon on his own
Kyojuro passed away with profound and encouraging words to show his determination
Kyojuro Rengoku was the star of the Infinity Train arc in Demon Slayer, surpassing the main trio of the anime—Tanjiro, Inosuke, and Zenitsu. He helped the trio save 200 passengers from Enmu’s train, then faced Akaza, the Upper Moon 3, alone. During this battle, Kyojuro started to lose ground, but he refused to become a demon to save himself, demonstrating admirable willpower.
Kyojuro Rengoku fought and died for his idealistic principles, which allowed him to achieve a moral victory, as Tanjiro loudly pointed out. In battle, Kyojuro amazed everyone with his breathtaking swordsmanship, keeping up with Akaza’s superhuman speed while repeatedly slicing off the demon’s arms. His ability to keep pace with such a powerful being makes him one of the best swordsmen in the anime.
5. Ichigo Kurosaki becomes nearly invincible at the end of the series
Ichigo as a Soul Reaper and Hollow powers in a new way
Ichigo Kurosaki, in Bleach, is one of the most distinguished swordsmen in the series, though few others are as skilled as he is. Ichigo trained for years as a Shinigami and became nearly invincible by the end of the series. Additionally, his Bankai gave him immense agility and a significant advantage in every battle, especially after unlocking the secret of his heritage and obtaining two distinct yet equally powerful swords.
Ichigo is the ultimate cool character that most shōnen heroes aspire to become. His unmatched swordsmanship, combined with his tough attitude, easily captivates fans. His Getsuga Tensho technique is probably the most memorable, but he doesn’t need special abilities to defeat the villain. Few anime swordsmen reach his level, placing him among the best.
4. Roronoa Zoro has greatly improved since the beginning of One Piece
Zoro's unique sword style allows him to use unusual attacks
When Zoro first appeared in One Piece, he already had a solid reputation as a swordsman, but it quickly became clear that he still had much to learn before becoming the greatest. Although he has yet to fulfill his dream of becoming the world’s greatest swordsman, he has made significant progress towards achieving his goal. Zoro can cut through stones as thick as a mountain with relative ease and defend against highly destructive attacks, making him proficient in both offense and defense.
Moreover, he uses three swords, one of which is held in his mouth, giving him a unique set of techniques. Zoro has demonstrated the ability to send slicing tornadoes of wind that take out several enemies at once, cut through steel, and even create extra arms and swords thanks to his fighting spirit. Zoro’s immense progress since the beginning of the series has made him not only one of the best swordsmen in One Piece, but also one of the best in anime overall.
3. Guts is nearly unbeatable with his Dragon Slayer sword
Along with an incredibly powerful sword, Guts also has an arm cannon
Even without the Berserker armor or the demonic blood that fueled his rage, Guts, the Berserk warrior, was a powerful and ungodly force to be reckoned with from day one. Unassuming, Guts constantly carries his gigantic broad sword, wielding it wildly if a fly is within reach. Known as the Dragon Slayer, Guts’ iconic weapon is undoubtedly one of the most powerful swords in anime.
Guts constantly channels all the anguish of living in the medieval nightmare world of Berserk. As a result, he has shredded men, beasts, and other creatures into pieces, and he is known to do so while facing massive waves of these creatures for extended periods. Thanks to his heavy metal armor, Guts even poses a threat to the gods of his world, showing everyone around him who truly wields the greatest sword. Even an army of anime could not survive a Guts assault.
2. Himura Kenshin fights primarily for redemption
Kenshin uses a mix of elegant technique and superhuman perception
Himura, portrayed in Rurouni Kenshin, was once an instrument of death and destruction. He now roams the country as a Rurouni, seeking a way to atone for his past sins and protect the nation. However, despite his polite attitude and passivity, Kenshin should not be underestimated. He rose through the ranks of samurai from a young age, achieving some of the most iconic feats in anime during some of the most memorable battles.
Among his skills, he has lightning-fast strikes, limbs so sharp they can be reattached, and, of course, blows that can cut through pure steel. Kenshin uses Battojutsu, a technique involving drawing and sheathing his sword at lightning speed. However, he doesn’t rely on just one skill. Instead, he regularly exploits the surrounding environment and his light physical presence to maintain an advantage over any opponent.
1. Dracule Mihawk is the greatest swordsman in his world
Mihawk was a sea warlord in the world of One Piece for a reason
It’s no surprise that Dracule Mihawk is considered the greatest swordsman in the world. While the world of One Piece is filled with talented swordsmen, Mihawk’s insurmountable feats and illustrious status make him a top-tier fighter. It’s easy to understand why even talented One Piece fighters like Zoro cannot dethrone the former Warlord of the Sea.
Mihawk doesn't need a sword as large or powerful to face his enemies. A simple dagger is more than enough for him to take on well-trained samurai. However, when he draws his mighty sword Yoru, Mihawk fights with elegance, wielding the massive piece of steel as if it were a natural extension of his arm. In this way, Dracule Mihawk has rightfully earned the title of the greatest swordsman in the anime.
