Ranking of the Best My Hero Academia Characters from Class 1-A!

My Hero Academia features an impressive cast of characters, but the anime primarily focuses on Class 1-A of U.A. High School, the same class to which the protagonist, Izuku Midoriya, belongs.

This group of 20 teenagers, all with much to learn, adds a strong academic dimension to My Hero Academia, resulting in one of the most well-developed student groups anime fans have ever seen. Class 1-A is far more than the typical high school classroom where the protagonist sits by the window.

Over the course of its seven seasons, My Hero Academia has developed all 20 students of Class 1-A their supernatural Quirks, hero costumes, personalities, backstories, and even their taste in interior design, as shown during the dorm room contest. That said, some students of Class 1-A are true shonen protagonists with compelling arcs, while others tend to blend into the background, much like the "extras" Bakugo often refers to. The top ten students of Class 1-A are all standout characters in their own right, each offering fans someone to root for and connect with.

Updated March 2, 2025, by Louis Kemner: This list of the best characters from MHA's Class 1-A has been expanded with five additional entries, as fans now have a more complete picture of Class 1-A. The My Hero Academia manga has come to an end, and fans know these characters better than ever—both as pro heroes and as individuals.

15. Rikido Sato Loves Baking and Fighting as a Muscular Hero

Rikido Sato, or Sugarman, rounds out the list of the best MHA Class 1-A characters, as he didn’t get much personal backstory—not even in the completed manga version of My Hero Academia. He was one of the many students who played a secondary role, but even in that modest position, Rikido tried to stand out. He mainly embodied the "gentle giant" archetype, which is always a fan-favorite in fiction.

Rikido is a burly teenager with immense muscles, especially thanks to his Quirk "Sugar Rush," but he’s also a kind and noble student hero who would never misuse his power. He even has a touch of "gap moe" due to his surprisingly shy and sweet personality when it comes to baking. His desserts earned him first place in the dorm contest, winning him a great reputation among his classmates.

14. Mezo Shoji Stood Up to Spinner as a Sympathetic Heteromorph

Mezo Shoji was one of the few Class 1-A students who didn’t have much opportunity to shine or develop his character, putting him toward the bottom of the best students list. Still, the anime eventually gave him his moment—especially in Season 7, when Mezo and Koji confronted the giant Spinner during a heteromorph riot in the streets.

Mezo proved himself a truly sincere hero by openly sympathizing with all the heteromorphs angry at social discrimination and inequality. He understood their pain from his own past but refused to give in to darkness or act out of selfishness. Mezo’s sincerity helped defuse the situation and convinced the heteromorphs to step back instead of destroying society.

13. Koji Koda Shined During the Spinner Riot

Like his classmate Mezo, Koji Koda knows what it means to be different—even in a futuristic world where almost everyone has Quirks. His unusual appearance and natural shyness kept him apart from others, but like Mezo, Koji refused to let that turn him into a monster. Koji was naturally kind and gentle, and he channeled that positivity during his fight against Spinner’s heteromorph mob.

Koji lowered himself—both physically and metaphorically—to confront the villains and push his Anivoice Quirk to new heights. He felt like a whole new character as he firmly stood against Spinner’s destructive hatred, refusing to fade into the background or let his classmates fight without him. Beyond that, My Hero Academia fans appreciate Koji as a friendly introvert who enjoys the company of animals.

12. Yuga Aoyama Took Responsibility for His Actions

For several seasons, Yuga Aoyama seemed like one of the least likable and least interesting students in Class 1-A, but Seasons 6 and 7 changed that. “Can’t Stop Twinkling” finally earned his place in the top 10 of Class 1-A students—even if just barely. Yuga turned out to be far more sympathetic than fans expected, with a bigger heart than his flamboyant exterior suggested.

Fans now know that Yuga was born Quirkless until his parents made a deal with All For One to grant him the Navel Laser Quirk. Still, Yuga empathized with Deku—also born Quirkless—and genuinely wanted him to feel better. Even more, though Yuga may have betrayed Class 1-A, he was overwhelmed with guilt and was willing to risk his life to redeem himself and become the hero everyone thought he was.

11. Eijiro Kirishima Learned to Accept His Quirk and Become a Manly Hero

Eijiro Kirishima may not be flashy, but he has a strong, confident, and wholesome personality, making him easy to admire throughout the story. At one point, Eijiro felt insecure about his "boring" Quirk, but he still looked up to Crimson Riot as a role model, showing that deep down, he had the confidence to follow in his hero’s footsteps. Mina Ashido later encouraged Eijiro to pursue his dreams.

Eijiro found his fire and enrolled in U.A., becoming the manly and wholesome hero he always aspired to be. He’s tough and cool, but also kind and graceful—a striking contrast to his hot-headed friend Katsuki Bakugo, at least in the early seasons. Eijiro also impressed fans when he helped Fat Gum take down two of the Eight Bullets who worked for Overhaul.

10. Mina Ashido Is a Brave Genki Girl With Slick Dance Moves

Mina Ashido is the genki girl of Class 1-A, making her a cheerful and lovable character from the beginning. She may not score high in academics, but she skillfully combined her excellent dance moves with her acid Quirk to become an agile and effective fighter—most notably during the U.A. Sports Festival tournament.

Mina is also carefree and friendly, getting along with nearly everyone and never hesitating to support or uplift her classmates when they need it. Even though her development arc was limited, she was appreciated from the start and has only grown stronger and more resilient as a pro hero. Her likable personality and humor secured her a spot among the best students in Class 1-A, even if the more deeply developed characters outshine her.

9. Tenya Iida Acts Like a Responsible Big Brother to All His Classmates

Interestingly, even though Tenya Iida is the younger brother of pro hero Tensei Iida/Ingenium, he often acts like a strict and responsible big brother in Class 1-A. Tenya is a disciplined, motivated extrovert who enjoys leadership roles so he can bring out the best in everyone—a trait that makes up for his sometimes stiff or exaggerated behavior.

Tenya also impressed My Hero Academia fans with his energy and focus, determined to follow in his brother’s footsteps no matter what—a feeling many viewers can relate to. He showed extreme discipline and bravery, even timing his own sprints and tearing out his engine pipes to grow stronger, despite the pain.

8. Kyoka Jiro Embraced Her Punk Rock Persona

My Hero Academia fans sometimes overlook the tsundere Kyoka Jiro, but a closer look at her growth reveals a likable and realistic evolution for a young anime character. Kyoka doesn’t have a dramatic arc or a deep theme, but her modest development feels authentic.

She loves music, a passion she inherited from her parents, but she was too shy to show her punk rock side to her classmates at U.A. Eventually, her friends noticed and appreciated her musical talent, allowing Earphone Jack to embrace her hobby openly and with pride. She even led Class 1-A’s rock band during the school festival—a cathartic moment for her.

7. Fumikage Tokoyami Is a Chunibyo With a Devastating, Darkness-Fueled Quirk

Fumikage Tokoyami might seem a bit cringe or dramatic with his chunibyo behavior—just look at his spooky bedroom—but he takes himself seriously as a hero student and isn’t as self-centered as he might appear. Despite his melodramatic manners, Fumikage is a generous team player and surprisingly humble given the raw power of his Dark Shadow Quirk.

Like some of his classmates, Fumikage was born with an incredibly strong Quirk but didn’t rely on it. Instead, he constantly sought to improve. He faced Dark Shadow in a dark cave to hone his skills and trained strategically with Hawks to develop powerful new techniques. He became a standout during the joint training arc—even if he technically lost after Kinoko’s last-minute mushroom attack.

6. Tsuyu Asui Is the Responsible Big Sister Everyone Needs

Slowly but surely, Tsuyu Asui/Froppy earned her place as one of the best students in Class 1-A. She’s popular for her dependable big-sister personality—likely developed from taking care of her younger siblings at home while her parents were busy. She’s also smart, rational, and calm—qualities Class 1-A desperately needs.

Tsuyu is often the voice of reason among her beloved friends and cares deeply for them, even crying openly when she feared they’d be hurt during the Katsuki Bakugo rescue mission. Fans adore her for her frog theme, stylish hero costume, and quirky tastes—like thinking Selkie’s odd behavior is cute instead of annoying.

5. Momo Yaoyorozu's Heart Burns with Passion for Heroism

Momo Yaoyorozu could have been an authoritarian ojou-sama, but despite her exceptional IQ and wealthy family background, Momo is remarkably humble and considers all her classmates as friends and equals. This speaks to her maturity and healthy perspective, and this humility helped her understand the necessity of pushing herself to become more than just "Plus Ultra" and to grow stronger. She wasn’t going to rest on her Alter and good grades for long.

My Hero Academia », un manga devenu l'épicentre d'une nouvelle vague de fanfictions sur Internet

Momo is also very relatable because she had to face her own complacency from a young age and overcome her doubts to grow. Even though it may seem like Momo was born with all the advantages, everyone can and must strive to grow—and that’s exactly what Momo did. Because of this, she ranks among the best students in Class 1-A.

4. Katsuki Bakugo Made Amends for His Bullying

Evaluating Katsuki Bakugo, Deku’s rival in true shonen style, is no easy task because he has many harmful behaviors to address. After learning that Deku was Quirkless, Bakugo started bullying and belittling him, which continued even after Deku received One For All. At that time, Bakugo despised Deku and felt threatened by him, a strange combination.

Nevertheless, Katsuki Bakugo truly cared for his friend, even if he couldn’t admit it. He even took a fatal blow for Deku during the Jaku General Hospital battle and worked with him to defeat Nine in the second MHA movie. More importantly, Bakugo sincerely apologized to Deku in Season 6, allowing the childhood friends to finally unite as true allies and showing fans the best side of Bakugo, the King of Explosions.

3. Ochaco Uraraka Fights for Her Parents

Ochaco Uraraka quickly became one of Deku’s best friends at U.A., warmly welcoming him to campus as soon as they started their classes. Since then, Ochaco has become his greatest ally, supporting Deku to the point where she wants to emulate him and become stronger, just like the Deku she admires so much. Ochaco also maintains wonderful friendships with her other classmates, especially Tsuyu Asui and Mina Ashido.

Although Ochaco was born with a decent Alter, she remains an underdog, which partly explains her admiration from fans. The Urarakas often struggled financially, so Ochaco swore to make a living as a professional hero to support her parents, thanking them for everything they did for her growing up.

2. Shoto Todoroki Truly Became His Own Man

It didn’t take long for My Hero Academia fans to uncover the truth about the talented yet distant Shoto Todoroki. He wasn’t just a young prodigy student and a rival to Deku: he was the product of an arranged marriage that shaped his life. Shoto was born to surpass All Might for his father, but he is determined to break free from this mission and become his own hero, his own master.

Given the fate of Toya Todoroki, Shoto could have faced a much worse fate, but as a genuinely good person, Shoto could never become a villain or a thug, no matter his suffering. Determined to do good in the world, he grew closer to all his classmates, seeing them as precious allies rather than background figures. He is even willing to reconnect with his father and give Endeavor one last chance at redemption, a truly noble gesture from Shoto.

1. Izuku Midoriya Went from Zero to Hero with His Big Heart

The main protagonist of My Hero Academia is, in many ways, the best student in Class 1-A. Deku is a generous boy who understands what it means to be born without a Quirk. He simply wants to inspire others and encourage them to become future symbols of peace, just like All Might once was. Deku also adopted the virtue of hard work with his new Alter, One For All.

Deku is intelligent, brave, idealistic, and sometimes humorous as a professional hero, making him a well-rounded character. He inspires fans with his tough and smart combat style, proving that shonen heroes don’t need to be silly himbos like Luffy from One Piece or overly scientific like Edward Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist. These characters either have muscle or brains, but Deku has both, and that’s refreshing to see.
