Hunter x Hunter has nine memorable arcs, including two unsuitable manga arcs; some are more exciting than others.
Including the manga, Hunter x Hunter currently has nine arcs, seven of which have received an animated adaptation. Each arc is radically different from those that precede and follow it, but the common denominator is Gon and Killua's journey as newly initiated hunters.
Given the uniqueness of these arcs, it becomes a matter of subjectivity to categorize them according to a random set of guidelines. That said, considering the narrative in terms of plot, character growth, cutscenes and overall emotional impact provides a satisfying lens through which to determine the quality of the various storylines.

5/ The arc of the celestial arena
This is the first Hunter x Hunter arc to take place entirely within an urban sprawl - the titular arena is a theoretically unfeasible 251-storey building. While Gon and Killua enjoy defeating the weakest opponents in Heaven's Arena, they are struck speechless (and motionless) when they come face to face with Hisoka's extremely menacing Nen.
The Heaven's Arena arc is quite brilliant, but its central focus is the man who ultimately becomes the boys' teacher: Wing. He explains the very basics of Nen, as well as the different subtypes involved. Gon has one type of enhancement, while Killua's is transmutation. The conclusion of this arc revolves around the fatal battle between Hisoka and Gon, ending with the hero keeping his scathing promise.
4/ The Hunter exam bow

The first arc of Hunter x Hunter introduces all the main characters quite effectively. Gon meets Leorio and Kurapika on the ship taking them to the exam, which encounters a huge storm in the middle of the journey. The actual exam is much more difficult, largely due to the large number of problems seemingly unrelated to the budding hunters.
The introduction of Hisoka makes this arc all the more enjoyable, especially as it promises a serious confrontation between him and Gon. Killua also undergoes a painful experience when he learns that Illumi is one of the competitors. Killua is the only competitor to fail the 287th Hunter exam, but he makes up for it by being the only winner of the 288th.
3/ The Yorknew City arc
The Yorknew City arc is Kurapika's moment to shine. He describes his suffering after the Ghost Troop coldly murdered the Kurta clan in order to steal and sell their precious scarlet eyes on the black market. Kurapika captures one of the troupe's members, Uvogin, after a long and rather perilous battle. At the same time, the Ten Dons hire Zeno and Silva Zoldyck, two of the world's best assassins, to kill Chrollo Lucilfer, the so-called leader of the Spider.
The Yorknew City arc reaches its climax when Kurapika manages to "kidnap" the villain from under the noses of his henchmen and orders the troop to free Gon and Killua in exchange for Chrollo's life. Despite sparing his hated enemy, Kurapika decides to take Chrollo's Nen with him, forcing the latter to abandon his beloved crew.
2/ The arc of the island of greed

The Greed Island arc is one of the most exciting in HxH anime. It follows the adventures of Gon and Killua on Greed Island, a game invented by Ging and his friends. The intrepid pair have some trouble at first, as they have to fight advanced fighters, but the introduction of the fabulous Biscuit Krueger pretty much turns the game on its head.
It's still not easy for Gon and Killua, as a few members of the Ghost Brigade also appear on Greed Island. They hope to find a Nen exorcist capable of dispelling Kurapika's chain of judgment on Chrollo's heart, but to no avail. The highlight of the Greed Island arc is the dodgeball match, where the unlikely combination of Gon, Killua and Hisoka manages to defeat Razor.
1/ The Chimera Ant Bow
Hunter x Hunter's Chimera Ant arc turns the world order upside down when extremely powerful hybrid ants start crawling out of their nests and wreaking havoc on society. Gon is horrified to see that his new mentor, Kite, has been horribly decapitated by Neferpitou and vows revenge on them. When the Ant King awakens, however, the president of the hunters' association has no choice but to enter the fray himself.
Although the old man literally blows them both up with his nuclear heart, Meruem barely survives the blast with the help of Yippee and Poof. That said, the ultimate victory belongs to Netero, as the ant king doesn't recognize the radioactive poison coursing through his veins. Gon goes to Neferpitou, challenging them to a death match, and transforms himself into an adult version of himself by sacrificing his vital energy.
