Ranking of Shonen with the Best Final Arc!

In shonen anime, an ending can make or break a series.

A bad ending can ruin a story, but a phenomenal one can make a great anime truly iconic. Shonen anime, in particular, are known for their long narratives featuring underdog heroes or grand adventures spanning dozens, or even hundreds, of chapters or episodes.

The final arcs of shonen anime are undoubtedly the most important. A good ending will be remembered, while a disastrous one will be a complete failure and, in hindsight, even damage the story. However, some final arcs of shonen anime have withstood the test of time and have become the most satisfying and iconic endings, not only of the shonen genre but of anime itself.

10. Naruto: Shippuden's War Arc Offered a Generally Satisfying Conclusion

The War Arc of Naruto Shippuden is controversial. The ending of the shonen anime made several major mistakes that more than anything else harmed the story, but despite its failures, the War Arc remains memorable and featured some of Naruto's greatest moments. From the iconic entrance of Madara Uchiha to the fateful battle between Kakashi and Obito, the War Arc showcased some of the most breathtaking fights in Naruto.

Although the Fourth Great Ninja War was marred by the infamous amount of filler content for which Naruto became famous, it still concluded the story with a beautiful ending. Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha had their final decisive battle in the Valley of the End. After saving the world from Kaguya Otsutsuki, Naruto finally broke the cycle of hatred. The only reason the War Arc remains controversial is that Kaguya Otsutsuki replaced Madara Uchiha as the final villain.

9. The Final Arc of Your Lie in April is Heartbreaking but Perfect

The final arc of Your Lie in April became infamous for its tears and emotionally devastating conclusion. Despite the hope brought by the finale with Kousei Arima playing the piano during a competition, Kaori Miyazono died after an extremely risky operation aimed at improving her condition. During his performance, he saw Kaori's spirit joining him in a duet, and the two artists gave one final performance together.

The ending is especially painful because he received a letter from Kaori after her death, revealing that she had been in love with him. The ending of Your Lie in April is not only memorable and iconic, but also bittersweet in its approach to loss and growth. The final arc definitely solidified the anime's legacy as one of the most emotionally charged endings in history.

8. Assassination Classroom Bid Farewell to Koro Sensei in a Memorable Way

The final arc of Assassination Classroom highlighted the extent of each student's development. The idea was that Class 3-E would assassinate Koro Sensei by the end of the year. And when that moment came, Class 3-E accomplished their mission perfectly, despite the tears that accompanied it. When they killed Koro Sensei, he had become more than just their homeroom teacher, but a life mentor who guided each of them towards the path of fulfillment.

The ending offered a bittersweet farewell between Class 3-E and Koro Sensei, with Nagisa Shiota delivering the fatal blow to their beloved teacher. Nagisa was set to take over Koro Sensei's role by becoming a teacher and mentor to a class full of delinquents and misfits. The final arc of Assassination Classroom provided a beautiful reward to Koro Sensei and allowed each student to showcase their individual talents.

7. Deku Became the Greatest Hero in My Hero Academia’s Final War Arc

The Final War Arc of My Hero Academia stirred both controversy and astonishment among fans. This arc changed the tone of the story, with many unexpected deaths and sacrifices. It also showed Deku transforming into a vigilante in the name of justice, revealing a darker side to his character. The shonen anime concluded with Deku becoming the greatest hero after defeating Shigaraki Tomura.

After sacrificing his quirk, One For All, Deku managed to break through All For One's defenses and free the world from its infamous villain with the help of his friends. The ending sparked controversy regarding the decision to make Deku quirkless after such a long journey, but the main theme of My Hero Academia has always been the possibility for anyone to become a hero.

6. Love is the Most Powerful Magic in Fairy Tail's Final War Arc

The Alvarez Arc of Fairy Tail offered an emotional and poignant conclusion to the shonen series. The Fairy Tail guild desperately resisted, becoming the last bastion of Ishgar against the Alvarez Empire, led by the dark mage Zeref Dragneel. This final war highlighted Fairy Tail's desperate attempt to protect the Fairy Heart from Zeref's grasp, while Acnologia waited for his moment to strike.

The conclusion saw Natsu defeating his brother Zeref and saving the guild from ruin. Add to this a tragic love story between Mavis and Zeref, along with a thrilling final battle between the Dragon Slayers, and the Alvarez Arc formed a perfect ending. While some questioned the idea that love is the most powerful magic, the main goal of Fairy Tail was to demonstrate the power of friendship. Love as the most powerful magic was a logical conclusion for the shonen, knowing that Natsu continuously grew stronger throughout the series for the sake of his friends.

5. Hunter x Hunter’s Pseudo Ending is as Beautiful as Possible... for Now

The Chimera Ant Arc in Hunter x Hunter (2011) shook the story of the shonen. While the anime had always been dark, the final arc truly marked the fans with its unrestrained approach. Kite was killed by Pitou, Gon sacrificed his future potential and nen to avenge him, and Meruem left a lasting impression as the perfect villain. The ending highlighted the brutality of the Hunter x Hunter universe, with no concessions.

Although the Chimera Ant Arc doesn’t technically mark the end of the story, it serves as the conclusion to the anime and offers a generally satisfying conclusion to Gon’s arc. He reunites with Ging after a grueling journey to find him, proving his strength as a true Hunter. The story continues with the Dark Continent Arc, but for simplicity, the anime stops after Gon successfully completes Ging's final trial.

4.Code Geass Has One of the Most Iconic Final Arcs in Anime

The final arc of Code Geass is undoubtedly one of the most iconic in anime. After conquering the entire world with the FLEIJA weapon system, Lelouch vi Britannia established himself as the emperor of the world. However, during his victorious parade, Emperor Lelouch was ambushed by Zero and impaled through the heart in front of the entire world.

In reality, all of this was part of Lelouch’s Zero Requiem Plan, where he would become the focal point of global hatred and die to contribute to world peace. Lelouch was killed by Suzaku Kururugi, disguised as Zero, and died before his younger sister, Nunnally. Lelouch's death was tragic and iconic, sacrificing himself for peace despite being perceived as a tyrant and villain.

3. Attack on Titan Still Managed to Stick the Landing Despite Behind-the-Scenes Issues

The final season of Attack on Titan offered an interesting conclusion, despite production and airing issues. The War for Paradis Arc was as memorable as it was controversial, with Eren Jaeger annihilating the majority of the world's population with the Rumbling. Eren's descent from hero to villain was slow and methodical, allowing his character to shine during the final arc of the shonen.

Eren Yeager became a villain and tragically died in Mikasa Ackerman's arms after successfully carrying out his plan. However, despite his extreme plan to ensure the safety and prosperity of Paradis Island, he ultimately failed to prevent future conflicts. The final arc of Attack on Titan may not have satisfied everyone, but the ending was in line with the anime’s dark tone and overarching message.

2. Yu-Gi-Oh!’s Ceremonial Battle Gave Pharaoh Atem a Perfect Goodbye

The Ceremonial Battle Arc of Yu-Gi-Oh! offered a perfect conclusion to the story of Yugi and Pharaoh Atem. Once the seven Millennium Items were recovered and the three Egyptian God Cards were in hand, the two men faced off. After relying on Atem’s power and luck throughout the series, Yugi finally grew and established himself as the true King of Games after defeating his partner in a duel.

In doing so, Yugi helped Atem return to the afterlife and proved himself as the best duelist by defeating some of the most powerful monsters in Duel Monsters. Furthermore, Yugi overcame Atem’s Heart of the Cards luck to defeat him, something even Seto Kaiba failed to do. The shonen's conclusion was both a perfect farewell to Atem and set the stage for Kaiba's later obsession with bringing Atem back from the afterlife for one final duel in Yu-Gi-Oh!: The Dark Side of Dimensions.

1. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood Offers a Perfect Final Arc for a 10/10 Anime
