Why Solo Leveling is the best anime of 2024

Why Solo Leveling is the best anime of 2024

The animated adaptation of Chugong's South Korean web novel Solo Leveling is finally out and already making waves as a must-see series of 2024!

The 2024 anime season is packed with exciting series - old and new - including titles such as Metallic Rouge, Bucchigiri?!i and Dragon Ball Daima. However, one of the most eagerly awaited anime releases of the year is Solo Leveling , an epic fantasy dungeon crawler based on the South Korean web novel by Chugong. Solo Leveling has found a devoted fan base eagerly awaiting its transition to television, but the positive reception surrounding the anime series premiere is greater than anyone could have expected.

Crunchyroll has begun streaming Solo Leveling for an international audience, and it has already generated overwhelming traffic for the anime streaming service after just one episode. Audiences are clearly ready for Solo Leveling to become their new anime obsession, but there are plenty of reasons why it deserves to be the only series people need to watch in 2024, whether they're seasoned anime fans or newcomers.

It's a clever and surprising evolution of the MMORPG and Dungeon Crawler concept.

Anime remains a highly versatile storytelling medium, with many diverse genres to explore. However, certain archetypes have become increasingly popular and dominate the medium in a way that does more harm than good. I sekai fantasy series, MMORPG riffs and Dungeon Crawler content have never been so popular, and the anime landscape is rife with them. The 2024 anime list alone includes series such as Gods' Game We Play, Quality Assurance in Another World and Delicious in Dungeon.

Solo Leveling takes the tropes of this genre and reinvents them in surprising and subversive ways. Solo Leveling isn't exactly an isekai anime, but it still takes place largely in dungeons with typical RPG characters and "game-ified" objectives. Fortunately, Solo Leveling isn't just more of the same, and finds ways to push these familiar concepts to new heights. Sung Jinwoo is an E-rank hunter, but he avoids a predetermined fate of complacency thanks to his ingenuity. Solo Leveling gradually becomes a captivating power fantasy that draws on fantasy and Dungeon Crawler archetypes, but is never constrained by them.

There's an excellent English dubbing, as well as other international productions.

There's always a frenzied debate about anime subtitles versus dubbed versions of series, but there's no denying that international dubbing helps to widen a series' audience. Solo Leveling's built-in fandom probably means that its anime would still be a hit if it were only available in Japanese. However, Crunchyroll has pulled out all the stops, and Solo Leveling will include dubbing in several languages beyond English, such as Hindi.

Solo Leveling's ADR English dubbing director is Caitlin Glass, who has assembled some of the biggest names in the industry to cast the series. Aleks Le plays Sung Jinwoo, Justin Briner plays Too Jinho, Christopher Sabat plays Baek Yoonho and Dani Chambers plays Lee Joonhee. There are many more characters to come in Solo Leveling , but the anime's first episode sets an impressive standard for its dubbing performances, particularly when it comes to Sung Jinwoo's frightened and conflicted protagonist.

Its powerful musical score by Hiroyuki Sawano

Music is a major element that can help elevate an anime to something greater than its source material. Music is such a powerful way of amplifying the themes and atmosphere of a story, so it's particularly exciting that Solo Leveling has entrusted Hioryuki Sawano with the responsibility of the anime soundtrack. Sawano's prolific anime career includes music for such famous series as Kill la Kill , The Seven Deadly Sins, Promare and Attack on Titan .

Sawano's work on Solo Leveling draws perfectly on the series' moody, suspenseful and action-packed narrative. Sawano is responsible for the music on Solo Leveling , but he's also behind the anime's memorable opening theme song, "LEveL", where he collaborates with TOMORROW X TOGETHER. "LEveL" immediately bombards the audience with the power needed to prepare them for such a special anime series.

Superb visuals and animations by A-1 Pictures

It's usually exciting when a popular manga or manhwa series receives an anime adaptation, but sometimes these productions are doomed to failure before they even get started due to the particular animation production companies involved. Solo Leveling is lucky enough to be produced by A-1 Pictures, which is one of the biggest names in the industry and has already made waves with anime such as Sword art Online , Fairy Tail, Blue Exorcist and Lycoris Recoil. A-1 Pictures has the right level of talent and experience to do justice to Solo Leveling's story, rather than sending it to a spread-out studio where delays are inevitable.

Solo Leveling's premiere is a testament to the series' fluid visuals, despite much of its first episode being immersed in a dark dungeon. A-1 Pictures recruits top talent for Solo Leveling, including director Shunsuke Nakashige, cinematographer Masataka Ikegami and art director Yasuhiro Okumura. This team is a sublime fit that correctly captures the manhwa and webtoon magic of Solo Leveling , but also elevates it to something greater with creative and inspired touches.

A good gateway to Manhwa and Webtoons

Anime, more often than not, adapts manga and light novels for historical inspiration. Recently, however, greater efforts have been made to give South Korean manhwa and webtoons a real showcase. Crunchyroll has made impressive progress in this department thanks to its animated adaptations of popular South Korean works such as Tower of God and The God of High School . However, Solo Leveling's success was on a whole new level, and there was intense anticipation for its inevitable animated series.

Solo Leveling garnered millions of readers before its anime went into production, and the series is the perfect introduction to South Korean storytelling. A brand new medium can sometimes be intimidating to explore, but Solo Leveling is an excellent example of what manhwa, web novels and webtoons have to offer. The anime's outstanding premiere is a solid introduction to this world. Those who love Solo Leveling will no doubt enjoy many other manhwa series now that they have a taste of what's possible.

It presents a strong, intelligent and ingenious outsider protagonist

Solo Leveling is the kind of anime series that lives or dies by the success of its protagonist. It's hard to create a protagonist who instantly connects with the audience, and there are some genuinely strong series, like Black Clover or Fairy Tail , that initially struggle because of flawed main characters. Solo Leveling ' Sung Jinwoo is the perfect blend of overworked underdog and ingenious genius. Solo Leveling establishes that Sung Jinwoo, as an E-rank hunter, is at the bottom of the chain of command. However, he looks to intelligence, ingenuity and inspiration rather than brute force and magic.

Sung Jinwoo is able to decipher the dungeon's enigmatic clues and avoid evisceration, not least because he's such an atypical character in this fantasy-centric world. Solo Leveling's premiere presents Sung Jinwoo as a brilliant mind, which is obviously just as important as raw power in these dangerous dungeons. Sung Jinwoo's Hunter rank will undoubtedly improve over time, but this progress is irrelevant without the right mindset to survive. Solo Leveling, in just one episode, makes Sung Jinwoo someone the audience both appreciates and cares about.

It's not uncommon for the first episode of an anime to get lost in exposition and story setup, especially when it's set in a fantasy world or incorporates foreign concepts that are important for the audience to understand. Solo Leveling takes place on Earth, albeit in an alternate reality where monsters, dungeons and hunters are the norm. Solo Leveling quickly and effectively establishes its system of hunter hierarchy and the way they patrol dungeons to collect goods that improve the world. Other anime like One-Punch Man, My Hero Academia and the upcoming Kaiju No. 8 can get lost in the weeds when it comes to their multi-level societies.

Solo Leveling covers the basics and hopes its audience will understand the rest. The result is a deftly paced premiere that still finds time for action, suspense and intrigue without much of the running time being devoted to rules. Solo Leveling has a complex, detailed world that's quite different from real life. However, it's content to analyze what's needed over time and use the inexperienced Sung Jinwoo as an effective audience surrogate.
