Perona

Perona

Perona, nicknamed "The Ghost Princess" in reference to her powers, was the leader of the Zombie Animals and the Zombie Ambush on Thriller Bark, before Gecko Moria's downfall.

She was one of the main antagonists of the Thriller Bark Arc, as she was part of the Mysterious Four alongside Doctor Hogback, Absalom, and Gecko Moria.

Appearance

As a child, Perona wore the same umbrella, crown, and had the same hairstyle. However, she was dressed in a simple pink dress with a small black bow around her neck, and small red boots. She carried a ghost plushie with her, along with a tamed bear resembling Kumacy, called Kumaé.

In Hogback's flashback, ten years earlier, while her crown is visible, the rest of her outfit is hard to make out. However, she appeared to be wearing a dress that gave her a childlike appearance.

Before the Timeskip

Perona has a rather unique style compared to other characters, with large round black eyes and very pronounced lower eyelashes, giving her a distinctive look. Her feet are often shown with her toes pointing inward. Perona resembles a "Gothic Lolita" with her flashy black, dark red, and white clothing.

Her hair is pink and very long. Her hairstyle consists of two pigtails tied with black and white elastics, along with a black, white, and dark red crown adorned with spikes and a cross. She wears a small t-shirt and stockings that cover her legs, along with a mini-skirt and distorted red boots. She always wears red lipstick and a thick layer of eyeliner. She sometimes holds a dark red umbrella with eerie patterns.

After the Timeskip

After the two-year time skip, Perona is seen on the Sabaody Archipelago, wearing a long black and white strapless dress with pleats, high-heeled boots, and a large top hat with a white flower crown. She has a pink bat tattoo on her left forearm, a wristwatch, and pink nail polish.

She still carries her umbrella and holds a plush animal that strongly resembles Kumacy. She also has a different hairstyle, now with her hair tied into at least four spiral braids at the back of her head. Her bust is noticeably fuller, and she appears more mature and less whimsical. She has gained strength and confidence.

When we see her again reading the newspaper with Mihawk, she is wearing a large straw hat under her crown, a white shirt with a loose black tie around her neck, a small black skirt with white flowers on it, and black ankle boots. She still wears her wristwatch on her left wrist and has several bracelets on her right wrist.

Personality

Perona is very confident in the abilities of her Devil Fruit. She was particularly shocked to see Usopp resist her power, as it was the first time this had happened, and she didn't think it was possible. She dislikes people telling her what to do and hates those who disobey her. Despite this, she is very loyal to Gecko Moria, seeing him as a form of protection, as she is seen crying to join him. Her loyalty is not without flaws; in fact, she tries to leave Thriller Bark after believing Oars wanted to kill her. However, she seems to be very attached to him, as she cries bitterly when she learns of his "death" in the newspapers and is relieved when Mihawk tells her that the last time he saw Moria at Marineford, he was still alive and that what was written in the newspaper is probably false.

In the manga, she speaks normally using very masculine language, despite her appearance. Before the timeskip, she behaved like a spoiled little girl, capable of throwing a tantrum if she didn’t get what she wanted. After the two-year time skip, she became more mature and less capricious, but she is still seen carrying a plush bear with her, indicating that she hasn’t completely abandoned her old habits.

After Zoro’s arrival, she treats her injuries and shows a desire to befriend him, even though she considers him an enemy, as she feels lonely and initially thinks of manipulating him. She also shows that she is not completely incapable of being kind to others, despite the cruelty she seems to display at times. She is even capable of encouraging people she finds depressed, even if they are enemies (like Usopp or Zoro). She cries quite easily, as seen when she starts crying after realizing that Usopp is naturally pessimistic, thinking it's terrible to live like that, and when she is sad to see Zoro so lost in Mihawk's mansion.

She apparently only likes "cute" creatures and will only let someone work for her if they are cute. Her dream is to create a country where all "cute" people would be turned into Zombie Animals who would obey only her. She didn’t like Kumacy because, although he looked cute, his voice wasn’t, and she preferred him not to speak. Her affection for cute things gives her a slightly childish attitude in some ways. She is very playful, threatening to burst Usopp's heart when she was in her ghost form. Usopp almost had a heart attack and got angry when Perona mocked him by saying she couldn’t do such a thing.

She seems to be terrified of cockroaches, even screaming in fear and believing that plastic cockroaches are real. Furthermore, she seems somewhat naive, not doubting for a second that Usopp could lift a ten-ton hammer.

Laughing Style

Like many characters in One Piece, she has her own laugh that uses the word "Horo": Horo-horo-horo-horo-horo! This laugh is derived from the name of her Devil Fruit, the Horo Horo no Mi.

Relationships

Friends and Allies

Zoro
After meeting Zoro on Kuraigana, she decides to treat his injuries, despite the quarrels they had. They manage to develop a mutual trust by living on the island for two years alongside Mihawk. She is also kind enough to guide Zoro to the Sabaody Archipelago and help him join his crew. She also slows down the Marines to allow the Straw Hat crew to escape. She seemed a little sad when she saw the Thousand Sunny drift away.

Moria
Perona joined Moria's crew in her childhood and considers him as a father figure. Even though she shares a strong bond with him, this didn’t stop her from wanting to flee after Oars began ravaging the island. She says she came to have fun, which is understandable as she was still a child. Later, when she learns of his "death," she is seen very upset, but Mihawk explains to her that it’s probably a lie. She remains convinced that he is alive after the two-year time skip.

Kumacy
Perona has another peculiar relationship with Kumacy, her plush bear. She finds him cute in appearance, but forbids him from speaking due to his voice, which she doesn’t find cute at all and can't stand. However, she was quite devastated when Usopp purifies him, despite the usual mistreatment she subjected him to.

Mihawk
Perona and Mihawk share a rather strange relationship. She settled in his castle after the Thriller Bark incident. When Zoro arrived on the island, Mihawk wasn't particularly pleased to see intruders in his home, but he eventually allowed her to stay. They spent two years together training Zoro, and later, it's revealed that they are still together, traveling across former battlefields. During the Wano Kuni Arc, they argue because he didn't tell her that Moria was alive and back on the scene, but also because she feels like she cooks too often. She wishes to rejoin her captain, but the Warlord, who clearly cares more about her than he shows, dissuades her, explaining that strange things happened during the Reverie, making the world dangerous. Perona is deeply touched when he says something kind to her (he simply told her to be careful), and in return, she thanked him for everything he had done for her.

Enemies

Straw Hat Crew (Formerly)
On Thriller Bark, for a brief period, she became an enemy of a particular member of the Straw Hat crew, Usopp. This was mainly because she was defeated in their fight, marking her first failure, something she had never experienced before. She completely ignores Nami when she meets her later, stating that "the long nose" is her only enemy. She believed that Nami was an easy opponent and that she could defeat her alone using her Devil Fruit powers.

After the time skip, she helps the Straw Hat crew escape from the Marines, showing that she has turned a new leaf and has even become an ally. This is likely due to the two years spent with Zoro.

Abilities and Skills

Zombie Army
Perona was the commander of the Zombie Animals and the Zombie Ambush of Thriller Bark, a part of Gecko Moria's Zombie Army consisting of Animal-Zombie hybrids. These are skilled fighters who assist her in her missions of inspecting shipwrecks at Thriller Bark or capturing pirates who venture onto her lands. Even Hogback himself acknowledged Perona's strength and usefulness under Moria's command.

poster-wanted-moria-one-piece™

Strength
Despite her appearance, Perona possesses a certain amount of physical strength, as she was seen carrying Kumacy's body, which is bigger than her, while levitating with her Devil Fruit powers.

Culinary Talent
Perona is capable of cooking many savory and sweet dishes as well as drinks, having cooked several times during the two years she lived with Mihawk on Kuraigana Island.

Medical Knowledge
Although she seems to recognize that bandages can help an injured person, she appears to lack expertise in medicine. During the process of treating Zoro's injuries, she covered him from head to toe with an abundance of bandages the first time she found him. However, despite this flaw, she possesses enough common sense or medical knowledge, as Zoro was able to recover from his wounds.

Sense of Direction and Navigation
Perona also has navigation skills and a good sense of direction, as demonstrated when she led Zoro from Kuraigana Island to the Sabaody Archipelago. She then went to Thriller Bark and later returned alone to Kuraigana. After learning that Moria was alive, she traveled from Kuraigana to the Hive, moving from the Paradise to the New World.

Devil Fruit

Contrary to appearances, Perona is far more formidable than she seems. She ate the Horo Horo no Mi, or Ectoplasm Fruit, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit. It allows the user to create ghosts and possess the same properties as them. "Horo" means "Hollow," referring to the ghostly powers of the user.

History

Past
Perona was adopted at a very young age by Moria, who raised her as his own. This is why she considers him to be her father. According to her, she joined him simply for the fun of it.

About three and a half years ago, Perona and Moria learned through the newspaper about Bartholomew Kuma's appointment as one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea.

Thriller Bark Arc
She first appears as a ghost, but her name is not revealed yet. She spies on the Straw Hat Pirates and is spotted by Brook.

She is later seen when she informs Absalom and Hogback about the number of Straw Hat Pirates and Luffy's bounty. Absalom comments on how calmly she announces the bounty of 300,000,000. Later, three of her ghosts encounter Luffy's group, who attempt to capture them. However, Luffy, Franky, and Zoro are momentarily affected by the ghosts and turn negative.

Perona reappears, and her ghosts return to her body. Kumacy wishes her a good return, but she orders him to be quiet, as she cannot stand his voice. She is finally introduced, seen encouraging her zombie troops.

Later, she orders her bear to be silent once again and tells him that she is going to the ship to recover the treasures. Upon arriving on Luffy's ship, she is surprised that the man who defeated Crocodile has no loot on his ship. Her search is interrupted by Hildon, who informs her that Moria is summoning the three monstrous zombies, as he wants to awaken Zombie 900, which surprises the young girl.

Perona is found in her quarters, shouting at Kumacy and Absalom, but they are interrupted by Hildon, who was looking for him. She then heads with him and Hogback to their master Moria. Hogback asks Perona where the three prisoners (Nami, Usopp, and Chopper) are, and she responds that she doesn't know, as she hasn't seen anyone.

Meanwhile, Luffy is gnawing on the bars, trying to escape. Absalom attempts to stop him, but Perona prevents him and decides to handle it herself. She uses her "Negative Hollow" and captures the pirate, who later has his shadow stolen by Moria. Perona announces that she wants her own country with cute subjects. Later, the Tararan subordinates inform Moria and the three monstrous zombies that their leader was defeated by a skeleton and lost his shadow. Hogback connects it to Brook, but Perona is confused, as she has never seen him before.

She witnesses the awakening of Oars, but Nami and the others are detected. After their departure, Perona watches the giant's meal. Oars climbs the mast, and Hildon announces that Luffy is awake and the pirates are approaching. Hogback panics, but Perona reassures him that she will capture the entire crew and that he should have plenty of puppets. She tells them she will be in her room and leaves with her bear.

She then encounters Usopp, Zoro, Sanji, and Franky. She incapacitates three of them, but Usopp resists her. He offers to stay and face her. She uses her ghosts to make him depressed, and while she believes she has won, Usopp rises and purifies the zombies that were about to attack them. He declares that her power has no effect on him because he is naturally defeatist, possibly the most defeatist person in the world.

This shocks Perona, as she never imagined anyone could resist her power. Panicking, she flees to her enormous room. Usopp chases her, but Kumacy blocks him. After defeating him, he searches for Perona and finds her flying outside. She tries to cheer him up and then plays around with him. He is in shock and cannot reach her, as she passes through his body with her hands.

She threatens to crush his heart, but after scaring the young pirate for a few seconds, she tells him it was a joke, which angers him. She dodges all his attacks and subjects him to true torture with her explosive ghosts. Kumacy arrives as backup, but Usopp, now Sogeking, purifies him, driving the young woman into a fit of rage. She causes a few more ghost explosions, but Usopp realizes something is off and finds Perona's real body.

She then explains that what he was fighting was just an astral projection. Usopp shoots at her real body but misses. Perona prevents him from trying again by capturing him with a "Mega Hollow" before returning to her body. Once she becomes human again, she makes the ghost explode, but it absorbs the attack with an Impact Dial. She tries to escape but notices that the earlier shot wasn't a miss. The pirate's shot spread glue, trapping her arm.

Panicking, she is about to be helped by Hippo-Gentleman, but Usopp uses the Impact Dial to defeat the zombie, impressing Perona. He shoots a "cockroach ball," which sends her into a panic. She hates cockroaches, and Usopp lifts a giant 10-ton hammer. She begs him to put it down, pleading with him, calling him "Mr. Usopp." Nevertheless, he lowers it to defeat her. Just before the hammer touches the terrified girl, it bursts, and the ghost girl faints. The pirate then announces that the cockroaches are fake, and the hammer was actually an inflatable balloon.

Perona is seen again upon waking up, surrounded by her zombies, and she begins to panic when she discovers the castle partially destroyed. Her subordinates inform her that Oars is responsible for the destruction. He arrives at that moment and shouts for "the woman." Perona thinks he means her, but he is actually searching for Nami. She runs away, taking the treasure of Thriller Bark with her. She then prepares Luffy's ship with provisions to leave. She declares that she came to this island to have fun, and if her life is in danger, she won't stay. However, she is blocked by Nami but announces that her only enemy is "Negapif."

At this point, Bartholomew Kuma appears and asks her where Moria is, to which she responds that she doesn't know. He then asks her where she would like to go on vacation, and she replies that she would like to go to a dark island where she could cast curses for fun. She regains her composure and tries to attack him with a powerful move to take his shadow and give it as a farewell gift to Moria, but Kuma uses his power to send her elsewhere, frightening Nami.

Ellipse

Perona is sent by Kuma to Kuraigana Island, along with Zoro. When she finds him unconscious, she initially considers killing him, but instead, she decides to heal him. When he wakes up, she tries to make him her plaything, but the swordsman refuses.

Later, she attempts to guide Zoro to help him leave the island after returning his swords. However, they are attacked by giant monkeys. To their surprise, Mihawk arrives. Perona is then seen crying after learning of Moria's death at Marineford, but she is reassured by Mihawk, who tells her that Moria was alive and well the last time he saw him on the battlefield.

Return to Sabaody Arc

After the two-year training period of Zoro, Perona returns with him to Sabaody Archipelago. While Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji are heading toward the Thousand Sunny, she helps them by repelling the Marines with her "Negative Hollows." She asks them why they are still lingering around the archipelago when they should be preparing to leave. She scolds Zoro for his ungrateful behavior toward her and strikes Sanji with her ghosts when he shows enthusiasm for her, commenting that the cook must be ill. She then informs the Straw Hat Pirates that Navy ships have been dispatched to the archipelago. Later, she assists the pirates during their escape by holding off the second platoon of Marines with her power. After the crew departs, she seems a little sad to see Zoro go.

The Quays of the World

Perona returns to the ruins of Thriller Bark and is happy to find Kumacy's body.

The Quays of the World: The Man with 500 Million

Later, she is seen alongside Dracule Mihawk in the ruins of an old battlefield.

Wano Kuni Arc

Perona learns from the newspaper that her captain, Gecko Moria, is alive, which motivates her to go join him in the New World. However, Mihawk (who clearly cares for her) stops her, informing her of the events at the Reverie and explaining that the world is more dangerous than before.

Egghead Island Arc

Upon arriving at Egghead Island, she discovers where Moria is being held captive. After finding the key to Koby’s cell, she proposes a deal to him: if he frees the former Shichibukai, she will assist him in his mission.

The differences between the One Piece manga and anime

The differences between the One Piece manga and anime regarding Perona's storyline are quite interesting, as they highlight the variations in pacing and characterization between the two formats. Here’s a detailed breakdown of the key differences you've mentioned:

Thriller Bark Arc

Manga: When Usopp knocks out Perona, foam comes out of her mouth, which is a visual detail present in the manga but not included in the anime. This small detail emphasizes the comic aspect of Perona’s defeat in the manga.

Anime: This visual cue is omitted in the anime, likely due to the adaptation focusing more on the action and pacing, skipping some of the minor comedic details.

Separation with the Straw Hat Pirates

Anime: In the anime, during Zoro's mini-adventure on Kuraigana Island, Perona exhibits a more childlike and solitary personality. This is partly because she is depicted living alone without servants, and she attempts to force Zoro into being her servant. She uses her Negative Hollows to make him swear to serve her and even demands that he dress as Kumacy, her beloved stuffed bear.

Manga: This behavior is not shown in such detail in the manga. Perona’s actions are less exaggerated, and the focus is more on the relationship dynamics with Zoro rather than the more playful or quirky interactions seen in the anime.

Anime: After the message from Luffy is revealed, Perona leaves the castle with Mihawk and Zoro. She scolds Zoro for wanting to start his training immediately and tells him to wait until his injuries are healed. This scene emphasizes a more nurturing side of Perona in the anime.

Manga: In the manga, there is no equivalent moment where Perona is seen scolding Zoro for wanting to train. She is more focused on Zoro's recovery and the practicalities of their situation.

Return to Sabaody Arc

Anime: When Perona scolds Zoro at Sabaody, her hat is shown to be bent and in contact with Zoro, implying she is in her physical form. This is inconsistent with her ability to appear as a ghost, which raises some questions about continuity and physical interaction.

Manga: In the manga, Perona is always depicted as being in her ghost form, and there’s no ambiguity regarding her ethereal nature. These inconsistencies in the anime are likely due to the fluid nature of anime adaptation and the occasional oversight in such scenes.

Anime: During the Sabaody Arc, there are extended moments where Perona uses her Negative Hollows to make Sanji feel depressed. The scene is drawn out more, with Perona continuing to toy with him. This type of extended filler is typical in anime adaptations, where scenes are sometimes padded to give more screen time to certain character interactions.

Manga: The scene with Sanji is much shorter and less focused on, with Perona’s powers being shown but without the extended playfulness that the anime version provides.

Anime: After repelling the Marines, Perona is shown facing the sea and says she will need to find "another toy," hinting at her disappointment with Zoro’s departure. This scene further explores her character's whimsical and childlike nature, adding depth to her loneliness after Zoro leaves.

Manga: This specific moment is not included in the manga, as it provides more of an emotional, introspective view of Perona that is expanded upon in the anime.

General Differences

The anime tends to add additional character interactions and filler content, such as the extended scenes with Sanji and the emphasis on Perona’s "toy-like" behavior. These moments enhance her playful, childish traits in the anime.

The manga, while still showing Perona's eccentric personality, maintains a more concise and streamlined narrative without the additional fluff seen in the anime.

These differences highlight how the One Piece anime often adds filler or extends scenes for pacing and character exploration, while the manga keeps the story tighter and more focused.
