Although Death Note features many characters, not all are beloved by fans. One of the most underrated characters in the series is Near, L's successor. After the latter's death, Near was introduced as one of his heirs, which displeased readers, making him immediately unpopular among detectives.

Despite the criticism, Near is actually very well-written, and some of his quotes are among the best in the series. From his incisive comments toward other characters to his insightful monologues, Near has truly made an impact.
10. "Kira will not miss this opportunity to kill me. Well, the fact that he agreed to meet me means he has accepted my challenge. The die is cast. Whether we like it or not, we must act."
For most of his arc, Near never met Light, whom he always considered his opponent. Thinking they had mutually outsmarted each other, they agreed to meet for the first time. Fortunately, Near's move was decisive, allowing him to defeat Kira and avenge L.
9. "You said that [Kiyomi] was an excellent student, but those were just her grades. She herself is downright stupid."
Kiyomi Takada was introduced in the series long before becoming a key character. As she became Kira's spokesperson, Near decided to study her, and this was his conclusion. Although he judged her unintelligent, he knew her loyalty to Kira was crucial and that she was considered important because of the role Mikami had assigned to her.

8. "We are going to be dissolved, thanks to that cowardly president. No, he's not a coward. He's not even a maggot."
Light was on the verge of reaching his goal of submitting the entire world to his will. When the United States yielded to Kira, Near knew the SPK was going to be dismantled and informed the other members. Although the majority of members were already dead, they continued to work on the case to bring justice to the world.
7. "This is the only photo left, and there are no copies... I've contacted every member of Wammy's House and anyone from your past who might know your face. It's not 100% perfect, but I think it's safe to say you won't be killed by the notebook."
Near and Mello had a great rivalry throughout the series. They had grown up together, and Mello always resented Near. However, they helped each other in their quest for justice for their fallen role model.
Kira needed to know someone's face to kill them, and the orphans of Wammy's House were lucky to have only one photo of themselves. After Mello left the orphanage, Near found his photo and kept it with him to protect him until their next meeting. In exchange for his photo, Mello revealed the existence of Shinigamis to Near.
6. "Mr. Aizawa, I'm sorry to tell you that Kira doesn't even consider the special unit a threat. You mean nothing to him. He sees you as flies buzzing around him. But he can never ignore me. That's because, to Kira, I am his true opponent in this battle of egos between him and L."
Long before Near and Mello got involved in the case, Kira was hunted by Aizawa and the other members of the special unit who had worked with L. For a long time, they didn't believe Light was their enemy, but Near succeeded in convincing Aizawa and Mogi to collaborate with him. They knew Near represented the biggest threat to Kira and joined the right side.
5. "For Mello, it's a game between the two of us to see who gets to the final boss first. But everything I just said is an optimistic point of view. It is possible that, like Kira, Mello wants to take control of the world. Mello has always wanted to become number one."
During one of the first interactions between Near and Light, Near asked to know more about the notebook and Kira, while Light pretended to know nothing. Light also researched Near and Mello to learn about their past. When Near spoke about his relationship with Mello, he explained their rivalry and their way of thinking.

4. "L number two, nice to meet you."
Although this quote is very simple, it marked the first meeting between Light and Near. Unaware that L had successors, the special unit decided that Light should take on the role of L after his death.
3. "To speak in extreme terms, I can actually understand those who would use this notebook for their personal interests and kill a few people, thinking they are acting normally. But you have taken the power of the notebook and the Shinigamis and confused yourself with a god. You are nothing but a mass-murdering madman."
After finally resolving the case and proving to everyone that Light was Kira, Near explained to his opponent why he had always opposed him. This is one of the few moments where most fans truly appreciated Near, as he expressed what Kira's detractors had felt from the beginning.
2. "If you can't win the game, if you can't solve the puzzle, you're just a loser."
After learning of L's death, Roger announced the news to Near and Mello. At that moment, Near was working on a puzzle he was about to finish. While Mello was devastated by their idol's defeat, Near spoke these words while flipping the puzzle over. Unlike Mello, Near showed no emotion regarding L's death, though it deeply affected him.
1. "Mello always said he would be number one, that he would be better than me and L, but I always knew I could never surpass L. It could be that I lack action and he lacks composure. And even if we couldn't surpass the one we admired alone, together, we can live up to L. Together, we can surpass L."
Mello's death was a crucial clue to solving the case, and Near would have perished if his rival hadn't sacrificed himself. Aware of this, Near recognized that his victory was also Mello's and that together, they represented the true greatest detectives of all time.
