Nappa

Nappa is a Saiyan warrior, one of the last surviving members of his race after Planet Vegeta was destroyed by Frieza.

Nappa is the subordinate and loyal companion of Prince Vegeta, with whom he arrives on Earth to conquer the planet and retrieve the Dragon Balls.

Characteristics and Personality

He has been part of Vegeta's entourage since the latter was just a child. Nappa stands out among other Saiyans for his fierce and impulsive nature. As a member of the Saiyan elite, he has the honor of serving the royal house, but despite his noble rank, he does not hold a prestigious position as one of Frieza's warriors. His battle power reaches 4,000 units.

He is around 50 years old and had hair in the first TV special. Like most men under Frieza's command, he wears a scouter.  

Nappa has a destructive personality and constantly indulges in violence. In fact, the first thing he requests upon arriving on Earth is to wipe out a city. The anime expands on this aspect when Vegeta allows him to vent his frustrations on the Earthlings while waiting for Goku’s return.  

Despite this, he remains an arrogant Saiyan toward his opponents and takes pleasure in humiliating his enemies. However, he relies far more on his muscles than his brain, which ultimately proves fatal when he begins his fight against Goku.

Biography

Nappa still had some hair and closely followed the young Prince Vegeta. This may be why Frieza unintentionally spared him, as he remained by the prince’s side.

As an elite Saiyan, Nappa was entrusted with training the young Prince Vegeta. He was on a mission with him when Planet Vegeta was destroyed by Frieza. Since then, he has remained by Vegeta’s side as his bodyguard.

Dragon Ball Z (Saiyan Saga)

He overhears the conversation between Raditz and Piccolo and, along with Vegeta, decides to travel to Earth to take the Dragon Balls and wish for immortality. Upon their arrival, Nappa destroys a nearby city, but Vegeta reprimands him for potentially destroying the Dragon Balls in the process. They scan the area to locate the strongest warrior, who turns out to be Piccolo, and head toward him.

They soon confront Piccolo, Gohan, Krillin, Yamcha, Tien Shinhan, and Chiaotzu. Nappa mocks their low power levels, but Vegeta warns him that they can increase their strength at will. To test the Earthlings, Nappa plants six Saibamen. The first is defeated by Tien Shinhan and immediately killed by Vegeta for being too weak, while the second self-destructs, taking Yamcha with him. Enraged, Krillin eliminates three Saibamen in a single attack, and Piccolo finishes off the last one. Nappa then prepares to fight.

Nappa effortlessly severs Tien Shinhan’s arm. Witnessing this, Chiaotzu launches a suicide attack to save his friend, but Nappa survives. Tien Shinhan then uses the Kikoho at the cost of his own life, only managing to momentarily startle Nappa. Piccolo and Krillin are ultimately saved at the last moment by Vegeta, who grants them a brief truce out of curiosity about Kakarot.

After three hours, the battle resumes. Piccolo devises a plan to exploit the Saiyans' weakness—their tails. However, the strategy fails as Nappa had trained to overcome this vulnerability, unlike Raditz.

Despite Krillin’s valiant efforts, Nappa nearly finishes him off. Overcome by anger, Gohan manages to land a blow that briefly topples the brute. Enraged, Nappa prepares to eliminate Gohan, but Piccolo sacrifices himself to protect him.

Malgré la colère de Gohan et son puissant Masenko, Nappa reste indemne. Goku intervient et sauve donc Kuririn et Gohan. Le scouter de Vegeta indique à ce moment là un potentiel supérieur à 8000. Nappa se refusant à croire cette information fait face a Kakarot.

Goku domine le combat contre Nappa, et lui assène plusieurs coups avec l'intention de venger ses amis un à un. Ne perdant pas pour autant sa vitalité, Nappa perd son sang froid, et c'est Vegeta qui le sermonne violemment.

Après avoir repris son calme, Nappa contre-attaque de nouveau avec ses meilleures techniques, faisant jeu égal avec le Kamehameha de Gokû. Le combat s'éternisant, Vegeta l'ordonne de se mettre en retrait. Il en profite néanmoins pour achever Gohan et Kuririn mais Gokû l'en empêche grâce au Kaiôken.

Unable to continue fighting, Nappa pleads with Vegeta for help, but the Prince of the Saiyans kills him, considering him a useless waste now. His death highlights how cruel Vegeta is towards his own kind, especially toward his loyal companion who had been by his side since childhood.

Dragon Ball Super (Future Trunks Saga)

Like many other enemies from the past, Nappa appears as an illusion in the Terror Forest when Goku and Krillin go to search for the Paradise Herb for Master Roshi. Although Nappa didn't kill Krillin in the past (unlike Tambourine, Freezer, and Majin Buu (evil)), his appearance seems to have terrified Krillin. Despite trying to neutralize the illusion using a Taiyoken and Kienzan, these attacks don’t work on Nappa. Krillin eventually overcomes the illusion by conquering his past fears.

Dragon Ball GT (Super No. 17 Saga)

When the two No. 17s fuse their energy to open the dimensional portal that separates Earth and Hell, Nappa escapes from Hell. He begins destroying a city. Upon Vegeta’s arrival, Nappa seeks revenge on the Prince of the Saiyans, but Vegeta kills him once again with a Kikoha.

Dragon Ball GT (Evil Dragons Saga)

He is seen in Hell with General Blue and Sergeant Metallic, attacking Piccolo, who easily defeats them.

Power

As an elite Saiyan, Nappa's power was incredible, enough to destroy entire cities with just two fingers and effortlessly defeat Goku's friends. His potential is listed at 4,000, but he was able to withstand Goku toward the end of their fight, even though Goku's power was 8,000 according to the manga. However, it should be noted that this figure was provided in the Daizenshū rather than the manga. This number seems somewhat questionable given the fight against Goku.

Nappa is capable of transforming into a Great Ape.

Great Ape (Dragon Ball Online)

Nappa was supposed to appear as a Great Ape in the video game Dragon Ball Online. However, although he never appeared in this form within the game, it was still implemented into the game's database, making it possible to obtain this image.

Super Saiyan

Thanks to the customization options in Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, Nappa is able to transform into a Super Saiyan.

Super Saiyan 3

In Super Dragon Ball Heroes, Nappa is capable of transforming into a Super Saiyan 3.

Fusion (Natz)

Natz is the result of the fusion between Nappa and Raditz using the Fusion Dance. This fusion was introduced in the spin-off manga Dragon Ball Fusions.
