Monkey D. Dragon

Monkey D. Dragon

Dragon, whose full name is Monkey D. Dragon, nicknamed "The Revolutionary", is the father of Monkey D. Luffy and the son of Monkey D. Garp. He is the famous leader of the Revolutionaries who are trying to overthrow the World Government. As such, he is the greatest enemy of the government's leaders.

He was once a member of the Navy.

Appearance

He is often seen wearing a khaki raincoat, and recently was seen wearing the uniform of the Revolutionaries. He has a red tribal tattoo on the left side of his face, from his forehead to his jaw, and his black hair is disheveled in the style of Luffy (longer). He is often seen with a sinister smile on his face. At the execution of Gol D. Roger 22 years ago, he didn't have his tribal tattoo on his face. It's amusing to note, however, that in all the photos depicting him, he sports a big grin and a psychopathic look. This is no doubt due to the World Government's desire to make him look like a dangerous madman. He often wears a hoodie. His age is unknown to us, but being Luffy's father, he must be around forty.

Personality

Dragon's personality is virtually unknown due to the many mysteries surrounding him, with the exception of an obvious love of freedom and belief in fate, the common traits of a "D" bearer. Despite this, he's very serious about his crusade, warning his subordinates that the conflict against the World Government will be long, difficult and fraught with pitfalls.

Unlike other members of his family, or other "D" wearers, his demeanor is stern and serious. However, he is often seen with a confident smile on his face.

Determined to keep the flame of the Revolution alive, he also seems to care about the innocent (probably seeing the oppression of the world government towards them), as evidenced by the scene where he voluntarily saves the inhabitants of Grey Terminal and then offers them a position in the revolutionary army.

He apparently doesn't like to be asked anything about his past, or even to talk about it. He also has a strange habit of always turning and looking in the direction of East Blue when the wind changes course. Fellow revolutionary Emporio Ivankov attributes this habit to Dragon's paternal instinct... given that he left Luffy in East Blue. He is described as "charismatic" by Brook. He advocates sincerity and discipline above all else in his army, his goal is peace, and he sees war only as a means to that end, not as something to be welcomed.

Relations

Family

Monkey D. Garp
Dragon is the son of the famous Vice-Admiral Monkey D. Garp. No direct interaction was observed between the two. However, Garp was "a little too" relaxed in telling Luffy about Dragon's criminal status, even picking his nose while telling him this. He even laughed when he realized he shouldn't have revealed this kind of information in front of everyone. There seems to be some kind of understanding between the two of them. Garp said the reason Dragon was in Loguetown was so he could watch Luffy set sail for the Grand Line. But in the end, Dragon had to save Luffy from Smoker's attack.

Monkey D. Luffy
Monkey D. Luffy is the son of Monkey D. Dragon. Like his father, Monkey D.Garp, he seems to have high expectations for Luffy. And although he has yet to introduce himself to Luffy, Dragon seems to support his son's actions to date. He appeared in Loguetown to see Luffy off to Grand Line and prevent Smoker from capturing him, showing that he cares somewhat about his son's well-being (perhaps to push Luffy to become more mature). Dragon also seems to be very proud of his son because of all the trouble he's caused the world government. His unusual habit of standing in the wind and facing East Blue (where he had left Luffy), apparently means he misses his son. When he was informed of Luffy's second intrusion into Marineford, he decided to concentrate on his own goals, and that Luffy was old enough (in his opinion) to take care of himself. However, he doesn't seem to be trying to turn him into a Revolutionary, leaving him to follow his own path.

Other
No mother or wife (if he was ever married) was named for Dragon. However, both were left as "?" in The Grand Line Times supplement issue, and he was bound to have had a relationship with Luffy's mother. As the bearer of the D's Will, he may also be related to other D's. It's unclear whether, before Sengoku made the information public to the world, Dragon knew that Portgas D. Ace was the son of Gol D. Roger, or if he was aware of Ace's adoption into the family (although his subordinate Kuma didn't know). But Ace was aware that Dragon was Luffy's father (before it was announced to the world by Sengoku).

Vegapunk
Dragon has a cordial relationship with Vegapunk, the Revolutionary. Although Vegapunk shares Dragon's contempt for the corruption of world government, he didn't join the Revolutionary army when Dragon invited him, as he considered the army poor. Nevertheless, both shared their respect for Clover and worked to ensure that the famous archaeologist's death was not in vain.

Skills and competencies

He is the leader of the Revolutionaries and has full command of the organization. At present, we know almost nothing about the extent of his skills. However, there are a few hints that Dragon is an incredibly powerful person, as the World Government considers him to be "The World's Most Wanted Man". We also see him in the episode where he saves Luffy from Smoker, who doesn't even try to stop him. The world government fears the possibility of being at war with him at the same time as Whitebeard. He is therefore a terrifying threat, and has formidable subordinates such as Emporio Ivankov, Sabo, Bartholomew Kuma and Inazuma who are comparatively less powerful than he is. This underlines Dragon's true power. When Sengoku tells everyone about the link between himself and Luffy, everyone is shocked, including Gecko Moria, a member of the 7 Corsair Captains, and the members of Whitebeard's crew.

What's more, every time Dragon appears in public, the weather, wind or storms are altered in some way. Rain at Whitebeard's execution, the Grey Terminal fire burning out with a gust of wind in Goa, and gusts of wind in Loguetown are just a few examples, although it's not clear whether Dragon is the cause.

History

Past

Dragon was born in the kingdom of Goa. He founded the revolutionary army between 19 and 24 years before the present day. One by one, countries slowly began to support him, even if sometimes the phase of understanding involved war. He witnessed the execution of Gol D. Roger, but he didn't yet have his tattoo.

At one point, Dragon was captain of the Freedom Fighters, a small, poor military organization. He eventually met the scientist Vegapunk and asked him to join his group, but he refused because their lack of resources meant he couldn't build anything.

Twenty-two years ago, a few months after the Ohara incident, Dragon visited the ruined island to pay his respects to the victims of the massacre. He spoke with Vegapunk, who was there for the same reason, and vowed to create an army capable of fighting back and preventing disasters like Ohara from happening again. That same year, Dragon, Emporio Ivankov and Bartholomew Kuma founded the Revolutionary Army. At this stage, Dragon had not yet acquired his facial tattoo.

Over time, his ideals slowly spread around the world and one by one, countries slowly began to support him, albeit sometimes through conflict, causing the downfall of many countries. Eventually, Dragon would be considered the world's worst criminal.

Twelve years before the current story, Dragon returned to his home in the Goa Kingdom and witnessed the burning of the Gray Terminal. After witnessing Sabo's grief for his own people, he asked for help and expressed his shame and contempt for his heritage. Dragon adopted a plan to save the people and embarrassed the government by creating a dam to allow those from Garbage Mountain to escape and join his ranks. As a result of his actions, the nobles simply noticed that the charred remains of their burning of the mountain were much lower than expected.

As Sabo set out on his pirate adventure, a Celestial Dragon destroyed his ship and Dragon took him in, wounded and amnesiac.

The revolutionary army

Sabo

He's known Sabo for several years (they met at the Grey Terminal incident). He was touched by what he had to endure at a young age. If Sabo is the second most important person among the revolutionaries, it's because Dragon must have a great deal of trust and consideration for him. We don't know whether Dragon was aware of the brotherly relationship between his son and Sabo before the information became public.

Emporio Ivankov

Emporio Ivankov is one of Dragon's companions and one of the commanders of his revolutionary army. Ivankov deciphered Dragon's habit of looking in the direction of East Blue, as if nostalgic for the country. However, Ivankov had no knowledge of Dragon's family until he met Luffy a few years later, which led him to protect him at all costs during his time at Impel Down and during the Battle of Marineford. It is not yet known how Dragon met Ivankov.

Bartholomew Kuma
Bartholomew Kuma was once a member of Dragon's crew and the Revolutionary Army, as shown in an analepse where Dragon saved the inhabitants of Grey Terminal in the Kingdom of Goa. His relationship with Dragon is still a mystery, but he knows that Luffy is Dragon's son, a fact that even Ivankov didn't know until he met the young boy. Although Kuma has been working with the Revolutionary Army in secret, his latest modification to full Pacifista now makes him entirely under the control of the World Government, but Dragon is apparently fully aware of Kuma's situation vis-a-vis the Navy and the World Government.
Koala and Hack
As with all revolutionaries, he is their superior.

Other Revolutionaries
The other Revolutionaries were relieved to discover that their mysterious leader is in fact a "human" when they heard he was Luffy's father and Garp's son.

Enemies
Being an outlaw (revolutionary), he is actively sought after.
