Appearance

Byung-Gyu was a slim young man with spiky black hair, pale skin, and black eyes. In his first appearance, he wore a light gray long-sleeve shirt, black pants, and blue sandals. During the 4th raid on Jeju Island, he wore blue-black armor with a gray hoodie, a grimoire on his right waist, and a brown-golden mace.

In his shadow form, Byung-Gyu had glowing blue skin and wore a tattered black hooded cape. He also had white, hollow eyes and held a teal-colored grimoire in his right hand.

Personality

Byung-Gyu was a friendly and compassionate man, deeply opposed to violence. He decided to retire early and considered leading a normal civilian life as a Korean history professor before the Korean government announced its intention to launch a fourth research and destruction mission on Jeju Island. Despite his aversion to combat and hunting, Byung-Gyu had a strong sense of duty and willingly participated in the fourth raid on Jeju Island.

History

Min Byung-Gyu, despite perfect health, chose to retire from hunting. His decision was deeply linked to the tragic events on Jeju Island, where he participated in three unsuccessful research and destruction raids. The devastating consequences, especially the loss of Eunseok, weighed heavily on him. A year before the Double Dungeon incident, Byung-Gyu joined the third Jeju Island raid with Eunseok and his close friend Baek Yoonho. The raid's failure and Eunseok's death traumatized Byung-Gyu, leading him to retire and seek another path in life.

Return to the Demon Castle Arc

Although retired, Byung-Gyu went to Japan after the country contacted the Korean Hunters Association to gather the opinions of those who had participated in the Jeju Island raids. Upon arrival, he and his team discovered that ants were evolving at an alarming rate and had now developed wings, posing a renewed threat to neighboring countries. Byung-Gyu called Baek Yoonho to inform him.

About five days before the fourth Jeju Island raid was launched, Byung-Gyu went out for a drink with Baek and announced his intention to become a history professor. He also made it clear that he would never return to Jeju Island.

Jeju Island Arc

Despite his initial decision not to participate in the 4th Jeju Island raid, Byung-Gyu ultimately changed his mind and joined the team the next day. During the raid, he helped his teammates by granting them stat bonuses and healing them quickly when injured.

Unfortunately, their defeat of the Ant Queen attracted the attention of the Ant King. Upon discovering the queen’s body, the Ant King attacked them fiercely, severely injuring each of them with a single blow. Realizing his teammates wouldn't survive the Ant King's assault without his healing magic, Byung-Gyu activated his Disguise skill and attempted to heal them as best as he could. Unfortunately, the Ant King detected his presence and attacked him last, impaling him in the chest from behind. Understanding he was dying, Byung-Gyu shouted for Baek to flee just before the Ant King devoured his head, killing him instantly and absorbing his powers.

After killing the Ant King, Jinwoo resurrected Byung-Gyu as a shadow soldier to heal Cha Hae-In, who was on the verge of death. Once Byung-Gyu was revived, Jinwoo granted Baek's request to let Byung-Gyu rest in peace and ended the extraction, allowing his soul to peacefully fade away.

Ahjin Guild Arc

Some time after the 4th Jeju Island raid, Cha Hae-In had a strange vision one night of Byung-Gyu's spirit pleading with her to warn Jinwoo to be cautious with his powers. She later relayed this warning to Jinwoo, convincing him that finding the source of his powers was more important than becoming stronger.

Ragnarök

Due to Jinwoo's time reset with the Reincarnation Cup, Byung-Gyu's death was undone. In the revised timeline, Byung-Gyu worked as a Korean history professor at a university before transitioning to medicine and becoming a doctor. He eventually met Oh Seonjoo, and the two married. Although he lost his memories as a hunter, Byung-Gyu sometimes had nightmares where he was killed by a giant ant.

Two years after the Great Cataclysm, Byung-Gyu, now in his sixties, had become a doctor and evaluator at the Hunter Association. He gained some fame as the only doctor in the country studying stardust and its effects on humans.

When Suho came for a rank re-evaluation, Beru was summoned to demonstrate his summoning skills. Upon seeing the small ant, Byung-Gyu almost panicked. Similarly, Beru recognized the doctor and felt sympathy and a familial bond with Byung-Gyu. Being somewhat responsible for his existence, he blessed him with protection.

Although he couldn’t grant Byung-Gyu all his S-rank healing powers due to the human’s essence having long integrated with it, Beru’s blessing allowed Byung-Gyu to awaken and become a C-rank healer. Despite his awakening, Byung-Gyu chose not to join a guild or become a hunter, believing his talents would be better utilized focusing on his research on stardust.

What happened to Min Byung-Gyu in Solo Leveling? Explained

Abilities

As an S-rank healer, Byung-Gyu was a master of healing magic and could instantly heal his fellow hunters, even from severe injuries. He also claimed to possess combat abilities on an A-rank level.

  • Healing Magic: Byung-Gyu was an incredibly gifted healer, as evidenced by his ability to instantly bring Baek and Ma Dongwook back to full health after the Ant Queen poisoned them. He also managed to quickly regrow Ma’s arms after the Ant King tore them off and restored Cha’s health when she was on the brink of death, something even Jinwoo couldn't do with healing potions.
  • Buff Magic: Byung-Gyu was able to improve his fellow hunters' stats through his spellbook.
  • Disguise: Byung-Gyu could blend into his environment and conceal all traces of his presence, making him invisible both physically and magically. However, he was unable to move while this skill was active, making him an easy target if the enemy managed to locate him.
