Appearance

Mei is a child with pink eyes and hair that she wears in two Chinese-style buns at the back of her head. She wears a long-sleeved red dress, a skirt and goes barefoot.

Mei originally started out as a grown woman wearing a lavender dress. However, after defying Rien, she received a scar-like mark that crossed her back and reduced her body to that of a child. After her first use of Tao, Mei's face and body began to mature and grew to about the same height as Fuchi. Her body finally returned to its original state after she released her Tao for the second time to save Gabimaru. After honoring Hōko's wish by extracting her remaining Tao to rejuvenate herself, Mei returned to her former childlike body.

In her Kishikai state, Mei's body transformed into a giant moth; with feathery antennae, vines of anthers emerging from her thorax and five large petals with eye patterns that acted like wings.

After several years have passed since the Edo period, Mei returns to her former childlike body, wearing clothes similar to those she wore in the past.

Personality

Mei is a shy, quiet and innocent girl who becomes easily frightened when hurt. She is particularly kind and considerate to those around her whom she sees as her allies, and also accepts others by seeing their good qualities. When they first met, Mei was afraid of Gabimaru because of his intimidating attitude, but after showing signs of respect towards her, she wasn't afraid to approach him. Mei also has a sense of knowing what is right from wrong, believing that Rien's cruel research into the Hōko needed to be stopped. Unlike the Tensens, Mei has no low opinion of humans, nor any reason to despise them, and was willing to help the survivors who came to the island in any way she could.

History
Past

1000 years ago on Kotaku , Mei was the first Tensen created from the Tao of a single Tao puppet created by Rien but was born to believe that her creator was Rien's husband, Jofuku . She then served as Jofuku's disciple and obeyed all Tao's practices as part of his quest to discover immortality. She also helped raise six young Tensens as they trained in the ways of Tao. Over time, Mei began to develop feelings of disapproval for everything that had happened around her, and upon discovering that Rien had sacrificed many Hōko .after favoring Tan's Outer Way, Mei tried to prevent him from going any further. This, however, led to her being punished by Rien by having her plant ovum broken, her body reduced to that of a child and being condemned to engage in Bōchū Jutsu with the Dōshi. She eventually managed to escape from Hōrai and was found by Hōko . Mei was then raised by him and lived happily in Hōko's abandoned village, while choosing not to concern herself with Lord Tensen's activities.

Edo period

Lord Tensen's bow

Mei sees Gabimaru , Sagiri , Yuzuriha and Senta looking out over the village. Gabimaru senses her presence and pursues her. After being captured by him, she cries because of his frightening behavior. Sagiri calms her and brings her back to the group with Hōko shot. Hōko then persuades them to come to the village.

While Sagiri and Yuzuriha take a bath, Mei provides them with towels and sheets. She then joins the group to discuss the elixir, the island and Lord Tensen . Hōko shows them that the elixir exists by separating her hand and regenerating it. Gabimaru looks towards Mei with his sword and asks if she also has this ability, which heals her. She then goes for a bath but is entered by Gabimaru and Sagiri and screams in panic. Sagiri provides the two with an appropriate bath and offers to clean Mei. After noticing Mei's mark on her back, Gabimaru tells her that appearance doesn't matter and that she shouldn't try to hide her mark. Mei notices Gabimaru's respectful behavior and finds it prudent to approach him. The two then return to their lodgings and rest for the night.

Just after Gabimaru has left for Hōrai and was about to die after fighting Zhu Jin , Mei appears next to him and helps him escape by creating a crater leading along a cliff. While asleep, the two are found by Tamiya Gantetsusai and Yamada Asaemon Fuchi . She later wakes up a little grown-up, which surprises Gabimaru. After talking to Gabimaru for the first time, he quickly asks her if she knows anything about the elixir and its strange power. Mei says her power is called Tao but confuses them with her strange explanation. The group is then approached by the Sōshin . Wanting to know how to use Tao, Gantetsusai carries Mei on his shoulder and asks her to teach him how to master it while fighting the Sōshin.

Gantetsusai asks Mei for reports on his progress in awakening Tao as he kills the Sōshin. Mei says no because he was using his strength too much. Gantetsusai then pointed at Gabimaru but Mei says he's also using his strength too much. After looking at her with a frightened expression, she starts to cry, much to Gabimaru's disappointment. Mei is then captured by a Dōshi who is delighted to meet her and addresses her politely. The Dōshi explains that Mei is similar to Lord Tensen and asks her to return to Hōrai for advice. She then looks towards Gabimaru with tears in her eyes and instantly appears at his side. He explains that even though she wasn't his concern, he still wanted to protect her.

Gabimaru asks the Dōshi why they wanted Mei. The Dōshi explains that she's part of their Bōchū Jutsu training where they arrange sex and join their Yang with his Yin, which scares her. She continues to tremble as he tells them about his past of being banished from the palace, being marked by Rien and having the option of dying or being part of the Dōshi training. Hearing enough of what they had to say, Gabimaru and Gantetsusai stand behind Mei to defend her from the transformed Dōshi.

After Fuchi interprets Mei's words about Tao, Mei helps Gabimaru try to feel his Tao by touching his hand. Gabimaru finds it hard to believe that by accepting his weakness, he will be able to learn the Tao. However, after Mei declares that strength comes from weakness, Gabimaru comes to understand and awakens his Tao. After stepping forward to face the Dōshi again, Mei comments on how Gabimaru possesses an enormous amount of Tao. She then watches Gabimaru dodge the Dōshi's invisible attacks. Gantetsusai declares that Gabimaru was able to understand Tao quickly thanks to his ninja training, but Mei shakes her head in disagreement. The three are then shocked to see Gabimaru dispel the Dōshi's transformation.

After Gabimaru and Gantetsusai finish the Dōshi, Fuchi suggests asking Mei for advice, but Gantetsusai thinks it would be better for her to go home. Gabimaru told Mei that he was still indebted to her and was willing to accept anything she wanted to do. Before she has a chance to make up her mind, she is shocked to see Gabimaru bleeding from the nose and fainting. They then travel halfway across the valley and settle in a cave. After Gabimaru wakes up, Mei provides information about what she knows about Tao and asks Fuchi to interpret her words. The group then decide to rest for the next day. Mei goes out to see Gabimaru and asks him if he's all right. He replies that he is, but Mei becomes frightened when she sees that part of Gabimaru's Tao is missing.

The next day, the group heads up the valley to reach Hōrai. On reaching the summit, they encounter Aza Chōbei and Aza Tōma . After Chōbei attacks Gabimaru, he counters by breaking Chobe's neck, but after surviving and throwing Gabimaru to the ground, Mei warns Gabimaru that Chōbei has a large amount of Tao.

While fighting Chōbei, the three notice that Gabimaru is acting unusually. Mei explains that Gabimaru's Tao is acting strangely and has lost what made him strong. While fighting Gantetsusai, Tōma orders the slave Dōshi to attack her and Fuchi, however, Fuchi pulls out her swords to guard Mei. She then watches Gabimaru fight a transformed Chōbei in critical condition. After Gabimaru sees an opponent to attack, Mei runs to stop him before he tries to use up his remaining life. Mei ends the fight by releasing her Tao to create a huge crater. Gabimaru and Tōma stay away while Chōbei falls into the valley. Mei's body then matures further.

She then receives Gantetsusai's robe for cover and travels with the group to the gateway to Hōrai where they meet Sagiri , Yuzuriha , Yamada Asaemon Shion and Nurugai . Seeing Mei's condition, Hōko asked her if she had used her power, to which she replied yes. He then expressed his gratitude that the group had kept Mei safe. She is then comforted by Sagiri after seeing the state she is in. After realizing that Gabimaru has lost his memories after waking up shortly afterwards, Sagiri corners him to get him to cooperate and restore his Tao. Gantetsusai thinks they're performing Bōchū Jutsu but Mei blushes, saying it was different but similar.

The group then moves to a cave to escape Lord Tensen's sensory field. Mei's body falls ill and Sagiri asks Fuchi to help make medicine for her. Fuchi agrees, but demands that Mei tell him everything they need to know. Mei passes the information on to Fuchi, translating that a Hōshi came to the island in search of ways to achieve immortality, resulting in the creation of the monsters and Lord Tensen who have been practicing the inner and outer way of the Tao for 1,000 years. After Yuzuriha learns that a prototype elixir known as Tan was created by Lord Tensen, she asks why they were going so far in their research. Mei replies that it's possible they're following the will of Jofuku , the Hōshi who created Lord Tensen.

Mei's condition worsens and the three see that her arm is beginning to turn into a tree. Mei explains that her use of Tao causes her to turn into a tree and has little Tao due to a broken tanden caused by Rien. Hōko offers Mei her Tao to recover but can't bring herself to use it as a sacrifice. Hōko insists, explaining that he hopes she will forgive him for not realizing his desire to leave the island after seeing her as his late daughter. Mei bursts into tears as she honors his final wish and tells him she considers him her father. After extracting her Tao, Mei becomes a child again and says goodbye to Hōko.

The four then gather in the group. Mei returns Gantetsusai's robe and sees that he is disappointed that his body has shrunk back to his childlike body. She then senses a strong Tao that has just landed on the island from a person or group of people. Shion and Fuchi think it's Shugen and the other Asaemon who have been sent to reinforce them, along with another group of criminals. While Sagiri tells everyone that Shugen will be useful in helping them, Shion informs them that Shugen despises criminals and gives proof by revealing the story of Shugen executing the Silver Serpent yakuza group and their families. The group continues by listening to Shion's plan to divide everyone into two teams to find Tan and an escape route off the island. They also listen to his strategy of using their Tao attributes to hinder and defeat Lord Tensen. After hearing Yuzuriha's suggestion to abandon the mission goal and leave the island in hiding, Shion gives everyone the option of following their own goal or working together to complete the mission. Unanimously, everyone follows Shion's lead and chooses to cooperate in finding the elixir and escaping the island together.

Arc Horai

Mei provides the group with information about the sea monsters guarding the island and the ships deep within Hōrai as a means of escape from the island. She also tells them that the elixir can be found in Rien's laboratory and its predecessor. The group then attend lessons taught by Gabimaru and Yuzuriha on how to use Tao. Once they've finished, Mei assists Gantetsusai after exhausting herself from the lessons by massaging his shoulders. She is then assigned to the team securing the evacuation routes. Gantetsusai suggests they send her off without making her wait for the Elixir team. However, Gabimaru asks Mei if there's anything she'd like to do before leaving the island. Mei confesses that she wants to live a normal life off the island, but also to find Jofuku and Rien to find out why they underwent a major change in the past. Gabimaru honors Mei's request and promises to reunite the two.

As they work out their strategy for infiltrating the palace, Mei tells them about the layout of the palace building and the temples in which each Tensen resides. Having completed their strategy, the group decides to make their move tonight. Mei then takes the time to explain to Gabimaru and Tōma how Chōbei managed to merge with the Flower Tao of the Waitanhua flower. They then return to Mu Dan's corpse where Gabimaru takes one of his plant stingers, using Flower Tao fusion as a backup plan. Mei is against the idea, as it's a dangerous risk and certain conditions must be met for someone to obtain Flower Tao's powers. However, Gabimaru is aware of how Chōbei took control and knows what he must do to do the same.

Mei joins the elixir recovery team and infiltrates the palace. The teams signal to the escape route security team that it was safe to enter and then detect the palace layout, which disturbs Mei and Sagiri by the corpses they detect in Rien's laboratory. They then successfully enter the building but are greeted by Ran, who knew that Mei would be the one to guide them.

Ran tries to bring Mei back to Lord Tensen's side, revealing that the elixir of life is finally complete. Mei explains that she is different from the others and has come to say goodbye before leaving the island. Despite his disappointment, Ran says that the Rite of Just Consumption will have to continue, which consists of capturing humans and offering them as sacrifices to the Grandmaster . Seeing that their plan to avoid Lord Tensen has failed, the group moves on to their second plan to fight them. Gabimaru tells Sagiri and Mei to find the elixir, however, Mei warns Gabimaru that they are not in the Rentan temple. Ran reveals that he has rearranged the palace layout before their arrival. He then traps Mei by controlling the Tao on the ground. While Gabimaru and Yuzuriha fight Ran, Sagiri frees Mei from her bonds and the two head for the Rentan temple.

On their way to Rentan temple, Mei and Sagiri hear loud noises coming from Dō'in temple. Sagiri assures Mei that Gabimaru will be fine as he has a backup plan, which worries her as she knows what it involves. Sagiri becomes shocked and horrified after Mei explains what Gabimaru plans to do, but knows they must move on after they arrive at Rentan temple.

Mei and Sagiri enter the temple but see that Gui Fa is in the room instead of Rien. The Tensen then says they'll stop them if they step out of place, but Sagiri tells him she doesn't wish to fight and would like to apologize to Gui Fa for the behavior of the humans who trespassed on their island and asks if her group would be allowed to return home safely. Gui Fa says they will honor his request but warns him that it would be pointless to return to Japan, revealing Rien's plan to turn every human into Waitanhua flowers and train the giant Banko .to create a more advanced tan. Sagiri asks Gui Fa why they would go so far, to which Gui Fa explains that the Tensens only see humans as material to create more Tan. Mei disagreed, saying that Jofuku had been trying to help humanity with his research and that using human lives was a mistake. However, Gui Fa explains that their plans have changed since humans first arrived on the island in the past.

After the ritual circle reveals that all the Tensens have been defeated, Gui Fa prepares to render an account to Rien with no intention of avenging their comrades. However, before leaving, Gui Fa asks Mei why she chose to return to Hōrai. Mei replies that she finally understood what life meant after remembering her time with Hōko. The three then feel the palace begin to shake due to Monshin shattering the walls outside, allowing the second landing party to enter the palace. Mei and Sagiri are attacked by both the Iwagakure shinobi and the Dōshi but are saved by Yuzuriha, whom they are happy to see again. After being told that the Iwagakure shinobi and the Dōshi have attacked the palace, Mei is asked by Sagiri if she would be willing to accompany them to confront Rien. However, before she can answer, Yamada Asaemon Isuzu appears with the intention of eliminating Yuzuriha, as ordered by Shugen to slaughter the condemned, but is hindered by Sagiri.

After Zhu Jin merges with Banko , Mei begins to see her body change due to her Tao's dismay at Zhu Jin's influence and concern for her situation. Once the remaining surviving humans have gathered, Mei explains to everyone that in the morning, the Banko will bloom and that arborification will have effects on those who breathe the Tan particles in the air. The survivors then decide that their best option is to work together to destroy the Banko and disperse it to their designated tandens; Mei being in charge of locating the tandens for the group while remaining at Yuzuriha's side to give the signal to carry out a coordinated attack on the tandens.

Starting bow
After the group has succeeded in destroying Zhu Jin's fused Banko, Mei and Yuzuriha run outside the temple and meet Gui Fa, as a child, holding the basin. Gui Fa then tells them the secrets they've found in Rentan's temple, revealing that the Rien they know is in fact one of many puppets created by Rien ., Jofuku's wife who plans to leave for Japan and turn every citizen into a Tan in order to revive her husband Jofuku, which will happen within two hours, shocking both Mei and Yuzuriha. Not knowing what they should do after this revelation, Gui Fa asks Mei for her suggestion. Before she can reply, Yuzuriha tells a panicked Mei that they must hurry off the island. Before leaving, Gui Fa warns them that if they choose to pursue Rien, only two men and one woman will survive, based on the I Ching ritual they found in the temple.

The survivors gather at the entrance to the sluices and enter. The group notes with sadness that all but one of the ships have been destroyed, but cannot set sail due to the wreckage preventing the water from sinking. While Gabimaru, Sagiri and Nurugai desperately try to remove the wreckage, Mei, despite knowing that her life is in danger of ending, makes the decision to enter her Kishikai to pave the way for the others. Using her large petal wings, Mei blows away the debris and gives everyone a chance to make their way towards the ship. Gabimaru shouts to Mei and reminds her that if she stays in her Kishikai, she'll die and won't have the chance to live a normal life. After hearing this, Mei creates an illusion of herself and embraces Sagiri and Gabimaru, telling them both that this was the only way for her to take responsibility and face her destiny, and to thank them for all they had done for her. She then put an end to the illusion and had Gabimaru and Sagiri transported to the ship. After the ship leaves, Mei's ruined soul apologizes to the people who helped her for not being able to flee with them, to Hōko, the Tensens and Rien for not realizing how saddened they were when they banished her and for not being able to run away. to stop them.

At some unknown point before leaving the island, Gui Fa had managed to acquire a replica or Mei's original plant ovum and had it grown in the pond to enable her to be reanimated with the other Tensens.

A new era

After several centuries have passed (presumably during the Reiwa era), Mei is fully resurrected after completing her period of cultivation in the basin and now lives among humans with Gui Fa , who has become an online teacher. After checking the ovules of the deceased Tensens' plant, Mei informs Gui Fa that Ju Fa and Tao Fa are starting to develop earlier and walks with them to revisit.

Abilities and Powers

Tao

Mei possesses the Tao Water attribute and knows its principles. Despite her small body, she has proved able to use it to enhance her physical strength and harm her targets. Mei is also capable of releasing large quantities of her Tao to create craters. However, after the rupture of her tanden, Mei's use of Tao was limited as any large amount she lost would cause her to mature until she reached her original body and slowly arborize . This side effect could only be reversed if she absorbed another Tao being to rejuvenate herself, similar to the consumption of Tan . In her final moments, Mei also showed herself capable of creating Tao illusions.

Regeneration

As a Tensen, Mei possesses Flower Tao's regeneration abilities. Since she possesses Water Tao, Mei's regeneration can only be weakened if she were to be attacked by a Tao user who possesses the Earth attribute, and the only known way to kill her was if said Earth Tao user completely destroys her plant ovule inside. her tanden.

Transformation Kishikaï

As a Tensen, Mei is able to enter a Kishikai state. Using her large wings like flower petals, Mei became able to fly and could unleash a great gust of wind to blow away anything in her path, beating them down.

Anecdotes

  • Like the rest of Lord Tensen, Mei is named after a flower. Mei's name means "plum blossom".
    • What's more, like the other members of Lord Tensen, Mei shares similarities with one of the Eight Immortals, Cao Guojiu being the case in point.
      • Both tried to prevent a loved one from committing atrocities, but ended up having to give up their old lives to live new ones.
      • Cao Guojiu was considered the Chinese deity of acting and theater. Gui Fa referred to this when they told Mei that they considered her emotions to be "staged" since Tensens was created to feel nothing.
  • Mei's ranking in popularity polls :
    • In the first popularity poll, Mei ranked 9th with 390 votes.
    • In the second popularity poll, Mei ranked 10th with 446 votes.
  • In the Jigokuraku Fashion Review for volume 3, Mei's outfit was awarded 5 stars.
  • On the cover of volume 6, Mei was originally shown with golden eyes like the other Tensens, but was later changed to pink on the color pages of the illustration.
  • For reasons unknown, Mei was the only Tensen created without possessing Yang chi. According to one Dōshi , this was supposedly the reason she was banished from Hōrai since she was considered by Lord Tensen to be an "inferior race". Moreover, Mei's Kishikai shows no sign of having two bodies representing Yin and Yang.
  • Since she was the first Tensen created by Rien , Mei was originally the oldest of her siblings. This role was eventually passed on to Gui Fa after Mei had spent some time resurrecting from the pool.
  • Mei has a limited vocabulary when trying to speak Japanese. This is due to his previous banishment from Lord Tensen, who all developed a command of the language at some point. After being taken in by Hōko, whose race also had an understanding of Japanese, Mei's few words developed as she imitated Hōko's words.
    • After coming into contact with Gantetsusai, Mei comically adopted some of her vocabulary and sometimes communicated in her way of speaking whenever she spoke to him, much to the astonishment of the swordsman as to who had taught her to speak in this way.
  • Mei is the only Tensen whose female form does not have her position at 173 cm.
  • Mei and Gui Fa are the only Tensens not to have shown their regeneration ability in the series.
  • Like the other Tensens, Mei has inherited Rien's childlike art and Chinese language.
