A new report by Animation Business Journal's (ABJ) reliable Tadashi Sudo has detailed Nippon Television Holdings' financial results figures dated November 2, 2023. Nippon TV already owned 14.86% of Studio Ghibli. It was revealed that at the time of acquiring the studio, Nippon TV had paid 10 billion yen to increase its share to 42.43%. ABJ reports that this would value Studio Ghibli at around 36.6 billion yen, the highest ever valuation for a merged and acquired animation studio in Japan. By comparison, the 2007 merger between manga publisher Mag Garden ( Aria , Elemental Gelade ) and Production IG ( Heavenly Delusion , Psycho-Pass , Ghost in the Shell ), which created IG Port, was valued at just 20 billion yen.

A Study of Studio Ghibli's Hidden Gems

Studio Ghibli's valuation is still considerably lower than Toei Animation's 600 billion, known in recent years for One Piece , Dragon Ball Super and The First Slam Dunk , all of which were huge financial successes . Nevertheless, this valuation is a great demonstration of confidence in Studio Ghibli, to whom Nippon TV has promised to guarantee its future and its creative capacity intact.

Fans won't have to wait long to see the magic of Ghibli on the big screen, with The Boy and the Heron due for release in North America on December 8, 2023. A new English-dubbed casting trailer was revealed on November 2. The film stars Robert Pattinson, Willem Dafoe, Florence Pugh and Christian Bale, who returns to Studio Ghibli having also voiced Howl in Howl's Moving Castle.

GKIDS is the North American distributor for The Boy and the Heron, and describes the plot as follows: "A young boy named Mahito who longs for his mother ventures into a world shared by the living and the dead. There, death comes to an end, and life finds a new beginning. A semi-autobiographical fantasy about life, death and creation, a tribute to friendship, from the mind of Hayao Miyazaki.

As detailed on Anime News Network , Nippon TV representative director Yoshikuni Sugiyama and Studio Ghibli president Toshio Suzuki announced the planned acquisition at a recent press conference. Nippon Television, a long-standing partner of the famous studio, plans to buy 42.3% of Ghibli's shares, making the latter a subsidiary of Nippon TV. According to President Suzuki, the aim of this partnership is to ensure successors for Ghibli, since Suzuki and co-founder Hayao Miyazaki are 75 and 82 years old respectively. In addition, Miyazaki's son, Goro Miyazaki, has turned down an offer to become the studio's future leader.

Nippon TV has been affiliated with Ghibli and its co-founders for over three decades. In 1985, the network presented Miyazaki's Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (1984) in its "Kinyo Roadshow" programming block. The financial success of Nausicaa eventually paved the way for the creation of Ghibli, the studio behind such beloved classics as Castle in the Sky (1986), Kiki's Delivery Service (1989), My Neighbor Totoro (1988) and Spirited Away (2001), among others. NTV, which is also home to such iconic anime as Lupin III , Inuyasha and Detective Conan , continues to feature Ghibli films regularly in its programming blocks.

Although Ghibli is preparing for a future without its co-founders, Miyazaki's latest film, The Boy and the Heron , has left an indelible mark on the anime landscape this year. Released on July 14, the film grossed over 7.4 billion yen (around $50.17 million) during its theatrical run in Japan. Set during the Second World War, The Boy and the Heron follows Mahito Maki, a young boy who has just lost his mother in the Tokyo bombings of 1943. After moving with his father to the countryside, Mahito comes across a talking heron that promises to reunite the grieving children. boy with his mother. This bizarre encounter eventually draws Mahito into an alternative magical realm where he must rely on his inner strength to find his way home. The film arrives in North American cinemas on December 8.

On September 7, The Boy and the Heron made its Western debut at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), where director Guillermo del Toro made a surprise appearance to congratulate Miyazaki on his latest triumph. "We are privileged to live in a time when Mozart composes symphonies," said the director. "Miyazaki-san is a master of this stature and we are so lucky to be here." While Studio Ghibli will fall under the management of Nippon TV in the near future, Studio Ghibli vice-president Junichi Nishioka says The Boy and the Heron is not Miyazaki's last film, as he continues to brainstorm and share new ideas for an unspecified future project.

Studio Ghibli's film library is available on Max (formerly HBO Max).
