Jujutsu Kaisen: Who Is Kenjaku?

Kenjaku is one of Jujutsu Kaisen's main antagonists. He is a thousand-year-old exorcist whose aim is to "evolve" mankind via occult energy throughout Japan. To achieve this, he needs to merge Tengen, an immortal being, with the human race and has set up the Murderous Hunt, a game of death between exorcists to achieve this end.

Thanks to a spell that allows him to transplant his brain into different bodies, Kenjaku has used different identities and crossed the centuries by inhabiting several carnal envelopes. Among the notable humans he has possessed were Noritoshi Kamo, an exorcist from the Meiji era (1868-1912) who is now considered the worst exorcist ever, and Kaori Itadori, with whom he fathered Yuji Itadori. Today, Kenjaku inhabits Suguru Geto's deceased body and has taken on his identity.

Appearance

By possessing a person's body, Kenjaku takes on the identical appearance of his host, the only difference being the appearance of a long scar on his forehead that runs all the way around his skull. Kenjaku can unscrew this box at will and sew it back on.

In addition to this, the brain that parasitizes his victims' bodies is Kenjaku's own. One of the characteristics of this brain is the presence of teeth.

Personality

In Suguru's body, Kenjaku displays a relaxed, cheerful and sometimes even arrogant attitude.

Although willing to work with scourges to achieve his own ends, Kenjaku reacted negatively when these spirits acted as if they were his equals. He proved to be a civil collaborator, telling Jogo and the others exactly what to do, and even struck up a friendly bond with Mahito. In his spare time, Kenjaku would even play board games with them. This relaxed, condescending attitude remained during the fights, when he would praise his opponents' abilities. Although Kenjaku sometimes stops by pretending he's talking like someone else, this implies that at least some of his habits stem from the influence presented by Suguru's original personality.

As his conversation with Yuki Tsukumo shows, Kenjaku believes that the next step in mankind's future lies not in "abandoning occult energy", but rather in "optimizing" it. However, make no mistake, Kenjaku is no Good Samaritan. Indeed, he wants neither a world of peace, nor a world without plagues. For Kenjaku, exorcists, non-exorcists and plagues all possess a potential linked to occult energy, just waiting to be tapped. However, Kenjaku himself doesn't seem to grasp this immense potential, of which he can only understand one thing: chaos. A chaos so immense and uncontrollable even for him, it's just waiting to be tamed. And it is this belief that is the main reason for his actions and all his unethical and inhuman experiments on plagues and human beings, and the main motivation behind his current intrigues.

History
Past

Kenjaku is a thousand-year-old being who, by making pacts with numerous exorcists, transformed them into relics and then offered their artifacts to humans. In the past, he was defeated twice by a bearer of the Sixth Eye. The second time, Kenjaku killed the Plasma Stellaire and the Sixth Eye within months of their birth. However, on the day of the Fusion, the Plasma Stellaire and the Sixth still appeared. As a result, Kenjaku no longer sought to destroy the Sixth Eye, but to seal it with the Edge of Supplication, as there cannot be two carriers of the Sixth Eye.

During the Meiji era, Kenjaku had managed to acquire the body of a member of the Kamo clan, Noritoshi Kamo. During this time, Kenjaku had run a temple, where the woman who could give birth to plagues had taken refuge. During his time there, it was recorded in the archives that Noritoshi had apparently made the woman his prisoner for her intellectual curiosity, performing numerous experiments on her that resulted in nine abortions that led to the creation of the Nine Phases Fetuses.

While in this body, Kenjaku had also mixed Noritoshi's blood with that of the fetuses, giving one of them access to the Kamo clan's hereditary spell, Hematite Manipulation, and the others spells based on the use of blood.

More than fifteen years before the beginning of the story, Kenjaku had taken possession of a young woman named Kaori Itadori, who was Jin Itadori's wife. Kenajaku, then in possession of the young woman's body, mated with Jin and from their union Yuji was born.

Six years before 2018, Kenjaku returned to the Edge of Supplication. On December 24, 2017, Suguru Geto was killed by Satoru Gojo and thanks to his spell, Kenjaku took possession of Suguru's body.

Arc Naissance of the Matrix

In July 2018, Kenjaku meets Jogo, Hanami and Dagon at a restaurant to discuss their goals. After dropping off one of Ryomen Sukuna's Fingers at the Eishu Juvenile Detention Center to examine Sukuna's current strength, Kenjaku explains to the Scourges that they must ally with Sukuna and render Satoru unable to fight. Only then can they hope to achieve their goal. Kenjaku recommends using the Edge of Supplication to seal Satoru. An excited Jogo kills everyone in the restaurant and tells him they won't be needing the relic.

That night, Kenjaku and Hanami watch Jogo lose to Satoru. Kenjaku stays out of sight because he has to keep any trace of "Suguru's survival" hidden until later. Kenjaku later enters Dagon territory to meet Mahito and the other scourges. When Jogo and Hanami arrive, Kenjaku says this defeat proves they should avoid Satoru until the operation to seal him on October 31 in Shibuya.

Petit Poisson bow and baton return

Some time later, Kenjaku sees Yuji and Junpei Yoshino chatting on the river, much to his satisfaction. He then goes to check on Mahito after his battle with Kento Nanami. The duo later place one of Sukuna's Fingers in Junpei's apartment, causing his mother to be killed by a plague. As Junpei attacks his classmates at Satozakura High School, Kenjaku and Mahito place a curtain preventing weak humans from leaving, the aim being to lure Yuji and force him to swear an oath with Sukuna.

Bow Tournament

Later, Kenjaku and Mahito meet Jogo. Kenjaku explains the rest of their plan to get Sukuna on their side. Hanami's attack on the Tokyo exorcism school was part of the plan, acting as a distraction to allow Mahito to retrieve some relics. Kenjaku advises them to avoid killing students, as Sukuna seems to be interested in one of them, and they can only release him at the critical moment on October 31.

A few days later, Kenjaku and Mahito implant the first three Fetuses of the Nine Phases in human hosts, letting the spirits merge and possess them. They send two of the brothers, Kechizu and Eso, after one of Sukuna's remaining fingers. Later, they play board games with the third brother, Choso. When Choso senses the death of his brothers, he breaks pieces of the game. Kenjaku asks him how he knew, but is contacted by someone who reveals that it was Yuji and one of his comrades who killed Choso's brothers.

Arc Shibuya drama

On October 19, Kenjaku and Mahito go to meet Kokichi Muta, their double agent. Once they've reached his hideout, Mahito says he simply wants to kill Kokichi, but Kenjaku tells him to first heal his body with Absolute Alteration. This done, Mahito and Kokichi prepare to face off. Kenjaku offers to help, but Mahito declines, preferring one-on-one combat. As the two fight, Kenjaku places a curtain. He then stands back and examines Kokichi's abilities. After Mahito kills him, he and Kenjaku leave. As they leave, the two allies talk about the fight and the final preparations of their plan for Shibuya.

Before October 31st, Kenjaku meets Jogo, with whom he discusses Satoru. They devise a plan to distract Satoru and seal him with the Edge of Supplication. Later, Kenjaku plays mahjong with Jogo, Mahito and Hanami, while he explains to them how the Edge of Supplication works.

On October 31 in Shibuya, Kenjaku is with Dagon while Hanami, Jogo and Choso look after Satoru. After dealing with the plagues, Satoru sees the Edge of Torment before his feet. He is about to leave, but stops when Kenjaku, in possession of Suguru Geto's body, appears. Confused by the appearance of his dead comrade, the Supplicant's Edge captures Satoru. As Kenjaku watches him being sealed, Satoru asks Kenjaku who he is, who replies that he is Suguru. Using his eyes, Satoru unmasks the deception and Kenjaku confesses to being an impostor. Kenjaku also tells him that he will unseal Satoru a thousand years from now, once his plan is complete.

Satoru says, however, that they still have Yuta on their side, to which Kenjaku retorts that even if Yuta is powerful, he couldn't become the "next Satoru Gojo". Kenjaku then bids farewell to Satoru as he seals him in. Before bowing out, Satoru asks Suguru how long he plans to let someone else take control of his body. Hearing this, Suguru's body arm suddenly grabs his own neck. Kenjaku laughs and says this is the first time an inhabited body has disobeyed him. Kenjaku then calls Mahito and the two discuss what has happened. Afterwards, the two watch as Satoru is sealed up completely.

However, after his allies wake up, Kenjaku watches the Edge of Supplication sink into the ground. He then informs his allies that they will have to wait until the relic has completely subdued Satoru. However, they all learn that other exorcists will be coming to their location and decide to spring into action. While his allies decide to move, Kenjaku remains with the seal to guard it. Once they've gone, Mimiko and Nanako Hasaba step forward and ask Kenjaku to return Suguru's body to them, which he refuses.

Later, Mei Mei and her brother Ui Ui head for Shibuya station and are confronted by Kenjaku. Mei soon realizes that this Suguru is a fake until he summons a morbid S-class scourge, the Old Lady of Smallpox (which he invokes as the God of Smallpox). After she and her brother defeat the spirit, Mei and Ui prepare to face GKenjaku, who claims they are strong for exorcists of this era.

Once the seal is complete, Kenjaku leaves level -5 of the station before Aoi Todo arrives. Later, when Mahito sees Yuji borrowing it from him, Kenjaku appears and offers his help to the scourge. Yuji then rushes Kenjaku to try and get Satoru back, but the latter pushes him away. Mahito tries to attack his ally, but Kenjaku dodges and absorbs the S-class flail. Afterwards, Kenjaku talks to Yuji about the future of the world.

However, the two are interrupted by students from the Kyoto school who attack the master of flails, but to no avail. As Kasumi Miwa uses her technique, Kenjaku parries it and sends Spirale at the student. However, he is stopped by Atsuya Kusakabe and Utahime Iori, who are protecting Kasumi. All are then interrupted by the arrival of Choso, who confronts Kenjaku about being one of his parents, Noritoshi Kamo, which he confirms. Just as Choso is about to attack him, Uraume intervenes and tells the half-elf to back off. Kenjaku then confronts Choso and the other exorcists who have come to help him. The latter, however, are frozen by Uraume's spell. Kenjaku asks Uraume not to kill them, as he needs a messenger. Uraume wonders if this is reason enough to leave everyone alive when Yuji suddenly frees Choso from the ice holding him. Uraume gets angry, then after blocking Momo Nishimiya's attack, activates Cascade, declaring that Yuji is enough on his own. Before they can crush their opponents, Yuki Tsukumo intervenes and protects them.

Kenjaku then has a conversation with Yuji about the importance of occult energy: while Yuki believes that mankind can only evolve if it gets rid of occult energy, Kenjaku believes that it lies in its optimization. Kenjaku then extracts and uses Mahito's spell to break Tengen's barrier. He then reveals to his opponents that he has used Absolute Alteration on two types of non-exorcists on whom he had placed his special mark in the past: the first, non-exorcists who had received relics and become receptacles, and the second, non-exorcists who unconsciously possessed spells and awakened them. He then proceeds to break the seal that binds them and explains that these non-exorcists are going to kill each other in a game to learn more about occult energy.

While standing behind Kenjaku, Uraume suddenly falls as the ice behind Yuki melts. Kenjaku asks Uraume what happened. Uraume replies that he has been poisoned by Choso. Kenjaku then reveals that the relics he has offered are the remains of the exorcists and plagues he has pacted with. He then releases a huge quantity of scourge before retreating with Uraume and the Edge of Supllice, and tells Yuji that he looks forward to seeing his evolution.

Yuji's execution bow

After the events in Shibuya, Kenjaku sets up the "Deadly Hunt", a fight to the death between exorcists with the aim of all participants learning more about the manipulation of occult energy.

Arc Preparations for the Hunt

On November 1, 2018, Kenjaku crosses numerous Murderous Stalk arenas, including Sendai. There, he appears in Setsuko Sasaki's subconscious - along with many other non-exorcists. Kenjaku apologizes, but Setsuko wonders why. Kenjaku then explains that the town she's in is about to become the scene of a great massacre. To help her and the other non-exorcists, Kenjaku offers to get her out of the barrier she's trapped in, which Setsuko accepts. Once at the border, Kenjaku thanks her for being his son's friend before disappearing.

While Megumi Fushiguro and her allies are with Tengen to find a way to counter Kenjaku, Tengen reveals that he, Kenjaku, the Stellar Plasma and the Sixth Eye are linked by fate, and explains the history surrounding this link.

Murderous Stalking Bow

Days later, Kenjaku appears in China, where he is due to meet with some of the country's top executives.

Skills & Competencies

The vast majority of Kenjaku's skills are still unknown, however, being over 1000 thousand years old, he was able to acquire a wealth of knowledge that most exorcists in the modern world are unaware of. Notably, during the Meiji period (1868-1912), he conducted experiments on a woman, creating the Nine Phases Foetus. According to Tengen, Kenjaku is sufficiently advanced in the art of barriers to approach his mastery.

In Suguru Geto's body, he led a group of incredibly powerful S-class plagues into a functional team capable of being a great threat to the exorcism world and Japan. He makes great use of his current ability, undoubtedly better informed than his original user.Jujutsu Kaisen: Kenjaku và Geto có phải là cùng một người không? - All Things Anime

Physical Abilities

Kenjaku possesses great strength. In Shibuya, he was able to parry the New Shadow School's Size Technique, one of the fastest techniques, with his bare hands, and then break his opponent's sword, again with his bare hands, without difficulty.

Close combat
Over 1,000 years in the making, Kenjaku has accumulated a wealth of experience in hand-to-hand combat. This was demonstrated when he confronted and overpowered Choso in a battle of pure physical blows.

Exorcism

Innate Spell

Kenjaku's innate technique enables him to transfer his brain from body to body, giving him access to all the techniques of the person he possesses, as well as acquiring the body's memories. What's more, the brain that Kenjaku sometimes reveals belongs to him; that's why non-exorcists can see it. Normally, by abandoning his host, Kenjaku also loses the body's capacity. However, he has several stratagems to remedy this, allowing him to use the spells of his former hosts.

In particular, this technique is so precise that it cannot be detected by someone with the Sixth Eye.

Here is a notable list of the bodies Kenjaku has possessed over the last millennium:

  • 400 years ago, Kenjaku transplanted his brain into the body of a then-unknown man. He used this person to establish oaths with former exorcists, in particular Hajime Kashimo.
  • Noritoshi Kamo (かも のりとし, Kamo Noritoshi): Over 150 years ago, Kenjaku possessed Noritoshi's body. However, the circumstances are still unknown.
  • Kaori Itadori (いたどり かおり, Itadori Kaori): At some point in the past, Kenjaku transplanted his brain into the body of Jin Itadori's wife, with whom they had a son, Yuji. It is currently unknown for what purpose or how long he inhabited this body.
  • Suguru Geto (げとう すぐる, Getō Suguru): Currently, Kenjaku has taken Suguru as his host body, giving him access to all his memories and skills. Kenjaku wanted his mind manipulation, and Suguru's body also allowed him to be able to successfully seal Satoru. He got the body back after Satoru refused to get rid of Suguru's corpse.

Spells of his hosts

Antigravity System (アンチグラビティシステム, Anchigurabiti Shisutemu): This spell is Kaori's innate technique. In its original version, it allowed her to use her own body as a territory to improve her basic inadequate power and to lift the spell's activation time limit. Kenjaku, on the other hand, uses an inverted spell to intensify gravity.

Spirit Manipulation (じゅれいそうじゅつ, Jurei Sōjutsu): This spell is Suguru's innate technique and allows him to domesticate the plagues he captures by absorbing them into a small sphere that he swallows.

  • Old Pox Lady (ほうそうババア, Hōsō Babā): A morbid S-class scourge of deformed appearance with plenty of warts on its body. The scourge was invoked against Mei Mei and Ui Ui in Shibuya as the God of Smallpox. However, it was exorcised by the two exorcists.
  • Mahito (まひと, Mahito): Kenjaku absorbed Mahito when the scourge was cornered against Yuji. Later, he assimilated the S-class scourge into his Spiral technique. Kenjaku used this technique on the two types of non-exorcists who bore his mark. With this, he was able to awaken them.
  • Kuro-Urushi (くろうるし, Kurourushi): A cockroach scourge registered as class S, he was removed from Spirit Manipulation by Kenjaku to take part in the Murderous Hunt in the Sendai arena.
  • Cursed Asian god: This scourge, assimilated by Kenjaku, is a cursed Asian god who eliminates all obstacles. An S-class spirit that binds itself to the very essence of its target. The scourge has been exorcised by Yuki Tsukumo.
  • Superior Technique, Spiral (ごくのばん「うずまき」, Gokunoban: Uzumaki): Kenjaku condenses all the flails he has assimilated into a mass of occult energy which he throws at his opponent. When used on scourges of at least semi-class 1, Spirale extracts the scourge's innate spells and causes them to be assimilated by Kenjaku. However, these powers are for single use only.
  • Absolute Alteration (むいてんぺん, Mui Tenpen): by assimilating Mahito into Spirale, Kenjaku extracts the spell from the flail. He used this technique on the two types of non-exorcists who bore his mark. With this, he was able to awaken them.

    Other Techniques

Curtain (とばり, Tobari): A barrier technique that prevents being seen from the outside and reveals the presence of plagues on the inside.

Kenjaku also knows his way around curtains by proxy. He was the one who adjusted the curtains in Shibuya.

     Discover our Geto figure

Reversal spell (Hanten Jutsushiki): A technique that produces so-called positive energy. Kenjaku can use an inversion spell to heal themselves - including the bodies they possess - but also to power inverted spells.

Territory Extension, Jonchée de Matrices: This is Kenjaku's Territory Extension associated with his spells. Inside, Kenjaku's techniques are enhanced. In addition, with the Jonché de Matrices, he can use his spells to extend his territory without closing the barrier.

Simple Territory: This is a technique for defending territories, neutralizing the unstoppable dimension of associated spells. Although we've never seen him use this spell, it is said that Kenjaku can use Simple Territory. Since he can even rival Tengen in terms of barrier, Kenjaku's Simple Territories are not like anyone else's.

Arcane, Basket of Emptiness: Like Simple Territory, Basket of Emptiness defends against territories, neutralizing the unstoppable dimension of associated spells. Again, although we've never seen him use this spell, it is said that Kenjaku can use the Basket of Emptiness.

    Intelligence

Kenjaku's greatest asset, however, is his immense intellectual and planning capacity. Kenjaku can draw up plans so advanced that they can span millennia before coming to fruition.

In modern times, he is the mastermind behind the Mahito faction and the entire Shibuya Drama, including the eventual sealing of Satoru Gojo. He is the reason why the faction was even able to function, due to the very opposite nature of the personalities of the scourges composing it. Kenjaku also organized the attack on the exorcism school and is the organizer of the Murderous Hunt and its rules.

The only weakness in his planning, however, was the Sixth Eye. He has, however, found a way around this in the present era. He is a skilful manipulator, as he planned to grow Mahito and Jogo, only to absorb them, which he achieved with the former, but not with the latter due to his exorcisation by Sukuna. Moreover, having lived for over 1,000 years, Kenjaku also possesses a deep and fundamental understanding of exorcism.

    Equipment

Edge of Supplication: This is an S-class relic containing a barrier capable of sealing absolutely anything or anyone. He recovered this relic six years before the story began and it was the core of his plan to seal the new bearer of the Sixth Eye (i.e. Satoru) in Shibuya. The plan took place on October 31 in Shibuya, and the sealing ended in his favor. Kenjaku is the bearer of the "front" of the Edge of Mercy. As the bearer, he alone has the power to open the "reverse", which is in Tengen's hands. However, it is possible to unseal the edge's target by opening it with a spell capable of canceling other spells.
