Maki Zenin exploded in popularity after the first season of Jujutsu Kaisen. Many fans fell in love with her impetuous, belligerent nature, her overwhelming physical strength and her conviction that she would one day return to lead the Zenin clan that had previously rejected her. Her character design was simple but memorable, changing the appearance of her current scarred state in the Anime for many fans. Here's how Maki earned the battle scars that define her appearance.
Since Mai Zenin's death and the completion of Maki's celestial restriction, the sorcerer's slightly muscular frame has evolved to reflect the superhuman strength that accompanied the complete break with cursed energy. And yet, compared to the scratched scars on the sides of his arms and face, Maki's physical transformation would be considered negligible. Her new look reflects the inner strength that Maki has always possessed and rightly earned in the midst of fierce battle.

Maki's burn scars were caused by Jogo
Maki suffered her iconic scars as a result of her involvement in the Shibuya incident. Shortly after the team comprising her, Nanami, Naobito Zenin, Megumi and Toji Fushiguro defeated the Special Grade Cursed Spirit Dagon, they were ambushed by Jogo, yet another Special Grade curse. Jogo wasted no time in bathing the exhausted wizards in flames in retaliation for her compatriot's exorcism. Since she had no cursed energy, Maki had no way of countering the effect of the cursed spirit's flames and suffered some nasty burns in the encounter.
According to Yuki Tsukumo , the only reason Maki survived Jogo's attempted immolation was because of the superhuman properties of her body, even before the completion of her celestial restriction. The special-grade sorcerer suggested that Maki had received treatment with the reverse cursed technique - which increased her chances of survival - but that even the art of jujutsu healing would have no chance of erasing the burn scars she had sustained. Overall, considering the severity of her injuries, Maki seems to be in pretty good shape, her scars even serving as a visual indicator of her as a capable and seasoned witch.
Maki's character design defies established jujutsu norms
Even before her celestial restriction was over, Maki had always been one of Jujutsu Kaisen's most revolutionary characters. Simply existing as a female witch in the Zenin clan was considered radical, and she had no cursed energy to boot. Even so, her initial goal was to one day lead the Zenin clan, but once she realized that reforming it for her sister was pointless, Maki settled for destroying it completely in honor of Mai . Having single-handedly defeated the entire clan, Maki had nothing left to prove to the institution that had previously rejected her.
According to Nishimiya Momo, jujutsu society had historically valued female witches only for their appearance, their fighting ability an afterthought if considered at all. While scars were battle trophies for men, they were considered imperfections for women. This notion has never really applied to Maki, and even less so now that she has those scars that should be "imperfections". Her total celestial restriction has enabled Maki to acquire strength comparable to that of special-grade wizards and certain unique abilities that are simply unattainable for traditional wizards. Literally and figuratively, Maki has become a jujutsu anomaly, flourishing as a female witch without access to cursed energy, but with a body that defies even the most absolute principles of jujutsu.
