Rin Itoshi is the deuteragonist of the Blue Lock series.
Rin is the younger brother of Sae Itoshi and started playing soccer with him at a young age. Rin played as a striker in all the teams he was in, always being one of the best players. In Blue Lock, Rin was considered the best player until he was officially confirmed as the number one player by Jinpachi Ego at the beginning of the third selection.

Rin's main goal is to become the best striker in the world. He was obsessed with the idea of beating his brother in soccer and getting back at him for giving up their common dream, but after the Blue Lock Eleven played Japan U-20, he gave up his revenge and decided to change so that he could become the best striker in the world, beating anyone in his path.
Rin is an ideal candidate for the type of striker that Ego strives to create and after the Japan U-20 game, Rin is ranked as one of the top players in Blue Lock. Rin currently plays regularly on PXG during the Neo Egoist League.
Rin is a surprisingly tall teenager with a slim but powerful build. He is significantly taller than Yoichi Isagi who is older than him. He has black hair with bangs that cross his face more in his right eye than in his left, thin teal eyes and distinct eyelashes that he shares with his brother Itoshi Sae. As a young boy, Rin looks largely the same, his facial features simply become more distinct as he ages.
At Blue Lock, Rin wears the standard body suit (black with gray stripes) and a tracksuit. At the second selection, he wore the red team's #1 jersey and the black A team's #1 jersey at the third selection. It was not until the Japan U-20 game started that he put on an official blue Blue Lock player uniform with jersey # 10 and a captain's armband.
Personality
As a young boy, Rin was very innocent and admiring of his brother, Sae, wanting nothing more than to become a cool and strong player like him. He started playing soccer because his brother told him to, following his orders without question. While they played soccer together, Rin listened to everything Sae said and adapted accordingly. When Sae left for Spain, Rin found soccer more difficult without his brother, but tried to become like him and replace him. This is where Rin's basic playing style would begin to change from his instinctive style to a more logical one.
Initially, he was a good team player and captain of his high school team, seeming to be on good terms with some of his teammates. However, due to his fallout with his brother, he became cold, blunt and overly serious. He is completely focused on soccer to an almost obsessive degree and is also very selfish, as he always puts his goals ahead of everyone else and their motivations. Rin has a lot of pride as a striker, which borders on arrogance, as he frequently describes soccer and the thinking of others as "lukewarm" or "mediocre." These manners and behaviors came from his brother; in an attempt to be like his brother, Rin copies his words and embodies his mindset.
Rin seems to respect almost no one. He will only acknowledge your presence if you have a notable and annoying ability/influence on the soccer field. He seems to have no friends, only rivals (only Isagi and Bachira seem generally equal to him). At the time of Japan's national representative game, he is more visibly chatty with the team, giving instructions on the field and conversing specifically with Isagi.
Rin engages in a follow-up routine at the end of each day to improve his physique, and can often be found in the training room doing exercises or weights. Despite his arrogance and aloofness, Rin truly lives and breathes soccer, dedicating every waking moment to improving himself. This mentality combined with his personality is what makes him the best candidate for Blue Lock's supposed top forward. Everything Rin does is to allow him to beat his older brother and end the rivalry, but after Rin gets past his revenge against his brother and his rivalry with his teammates, he achieves clarity in his decisions. He now aims to free himself from whatever is holding him back and establish his own identity as a selfish person, without relying on his brother, teammates or rivals.
Capabilities
Archetype
- Playmaker: A player who controls the flow of the team's offensive play and is often involved in passing moves that lead to goals through vision, technique, ball control, creativity and passing ability.
When he was younger, Rin was an instinctive player, but being trained and guided by his brother made him develop a particularly logical and predictive style of play. Whether in attack or defense, Rin's style of play is to grasp the abilities of his teammates and opponents and force their best plays and abilities, manipulating them in his efforts to score goals for himself.
Skills
Superior soccer technique: Rin is one of the two Blue Lock players who have high level statistics, along with Ryusei Shidou . In the third selection, he scored an average of 2.5 goals per game, which was the highest in the Top 6. His spatial awareness, ball control, power and shooting accuracy are rivaled by only a handful of players. Although Shidou can be described in the same way, what makes Rin the best in Blue Lock is his willingness to cooperate and create chemical reactions with his teammates, while Shidou scores goals completely independently. Rin's experience and techniques are advanced enough that he is able to play the role of captain, act as the focal point of an attack, play defense, and even defeat high-level defenders, using their own strengths against them.
Perfect Kick Accuracy: Rin's main weapon is her very accurate kick. His kicking/passing accuracy is almost perfect, as evidenced by the fact that he kicked two balls in such a way that they traveled different paths, while hitting each other in the air. Rin's kicks are so accurate that he is capable of scoring from long distance; Isagi suggested that he could potentially score from anywhere under 35 meters, free kicks and even directly from corner kicks. Even under the physical pressure of players like Shidou Ryusei or Tabito Karasu, he is able to make an accurate shot. Aiku Oliver notes that his shooting power and accuracy decrease when he uses his left foot, but in most conditions where Rin can shoot, he is on target. Rin needs space and range to set up his shot pattern, the denial of which can cause his shot to fail. However, he uses his other weapons to end up with a lot of both, making him one of the best scorers in Blue Lock.
- Accurate high speed free kick: Rin took a high speed free kick with incredible accuracy. This free kick was so fast and accurate that it went right over Isagi's head, giving him no chance to react.
- Direct Vertical Spin Shot: A direct shot from the corner point, targeting the top corner furthest from the goal. This shot can catch players off guard if they don't expect it, thinking it can be avoided by positioning.
- Line Drive Shot: Rin attempted to replicate his brother's shot, dribbling to the goal line and using his left foot to launch the ball over the goalkeeper and into the net on the other side. However, the decrease in shooting power and accuracy means that his shot was saved and hit the post.
- Jump Shot: After feinting to get around an opponent's defense, Rin lifts the ball and executes a jumping roundhouse kick. With this technique, Rin is able to both shoot with frightening accuracy and evade a challenge from an opponent.
- Blind Shot: Rin takes advantage of another player's movement to shield the ball from the goalkeeper's view, before firing a blind shot that the goalkeeper cannot react to in time.
-
Trivela (Shot): A technique in which you spin the ball using the outside of your foot. Rin hides his form, to force the assumption that he will shoot with his left foot, before shooting with his right. Rin is able to do this and score from outside the penalty area, as demonstrated against Japan U-20.
Trivela (pass): A technique in which you spin the ball using the outside of your foot. Rin can use this technique to pass the ball, manipulating the opponent into thinking that his pass has failed, only to have him return to his destination. - Oppressive Pass: Rin makes a difficult pass to his teammate in order to continue a play. He will usually play this pass in the optimal space for his teammate to recover and return the pass (in the case of Aryu) or in the space where he expects his teammate to break through (in the case of Bachira). This pass, as opposed to a more creative pass, challenges the limitations of Rin's team, forcing them to rise to meet his expectations.
Spatial Awareness: Rin analyzes the entire field, including the positions of himself, his teammates, and his opponents, to determine the best play. Rin's tactical ability and spatial awareness are at such a level that only Isagi can understand, counter and compete with his analytical ability. Rin is regularly able to predict the positioning and movements of other players, including Isagi, by setting up traps and baits to lure them into unfavorable positions, intercepting their plays and setting up his own.
- Spacing: By reading his opponent's weapon, as well as the positions of other players on the field, Rin spaces himself in a way that allows him to predict and respond to whatever they decide to do.
- Synchronization: Rin is also able to use his spatial awareness defensively, by reading and understanding the heart of his opponent's soccer, he can overlap his thoughts with theirs to predict what he will do next. He used it to stop Sae and Shidou's combined attack during the U-20 game. However, focusing only on defensive play makes it difficult for him to join the offense to score his own goals.
Off-ball moves: A term used to describe times when players are not in possession of the ball. Rin uses these movements to position himself in an opponent's blind spot, as well as to maneuver into goal positions. He does this after determining the field of vision of the players on the field, like Isagi.
- Positioning: Rin has incredible positioning, constantly moving to areas where he can receive the ball in space and still be able to score a goal. If Rin realizes that he will not receive a pass, he always positions himself in a spot where he could score if he were to receive the ball by chance. He demonstrated this positioning in the second selection, as well as in the U-20 game. Rin also uses it defensively, in combination with his spatial awareness. After using his spacing, Rin gives himself enough room to predict where the opponent is likely to break through, then uses his positioning to intercept them.
- Super-Speed Interlock: Using another player's movement as a precursor, Rin moves into a position where he can meet a fast cross in open space. He used iten conjonction avec Bachira pour marquer contre l'équipe World Five.
Puppet-controlled soccer: Rin's main style of play is to control and manipulate what his opponent thinks. After identifying the strengths and weaknesses of each player on the field, Rin uses his superior technique, tactical and physical abilities to manipulate them into scenarios that will result in a goal. He can do this by using his own abilities against the opponent or by combining his strengths with those of his team. This style of soccer pushes his team's abilities to their limits and beyond, resulting in very complex and effective play that often results in a goal.
- Feints: By positioning himself at a distance where he can shoot, Rin manipulates his opponent into thinking he is going to shoot. This lures the opponent to attempt a block, before he feints to get around them. Rin can also use it in reverse. By changing his form and hiding his movement, he fools his opponent into thinking he won't shoot, before he does.
- Marseille Turn: After manipulating his opponent into thinking he will perform a regular feint, Rin turns into a roulette wheel to get around their defense.
- Elastico Nutmeg: Rin hits the ball to the side with the outside of his foot to force a challenge from his opponent, before using the inside of his foot to push the ball between their legs and past them. He used this to get past Sendo.
Flow State: Flow, as described by Ego, is the state of "total immersion" or "being in the zone." It is the mental state in which a person performing an activity is completely immersed in a sense of energetic concentration, total involvement and enjoyment in the process of the activity.
Rin finally reached Flow in the final minutes of the Japan U20 match. Rin's style of soccer usually involves accurately calculating the players' weapons on the field and shooting them to use, manipulating the field to find the best way to score. However, when in Flow, rather than pulling out other players' weapons to use them effectively, Rin pulls out their weapons to stop them. This usually involves Rin baiting them in some way, to use their most powerful weapon, before defeating them directly. In Flow, Rin is rated several levels above her standard abilities. Rin managed to completely defeat Teppei Neru, Miroku Darai and Kazuma Niouen quick succession, using each of their weapons against them. Even Aiku couldn't stop her alone, but when they were helped by Shidou, they were able to put pressure on Rin. Despite this, Rin was able to throw a powerful curved shot that only missed by a few inches. Rin is even able to neutralize Sae's dribbling as we saw in the last minute of the U-20 match.
- Opposite acceleration: When facing someone with speed as a weapon, Rin hits the ball to the side to bait their forward acceleration, before they suddenly accelerate in the opposite direction, blocking them in the process. He used this to get past Neru.
- Off-ball moves: When facing someone with off-ball moves as a weapon, Rin will cross him several times to get behind, before using his hand to stop him from turning around to stop him. He used this to get past Darai.
- Center of Gravity Full Burst: When facing someone with basic strength as a weapon, Rin will force a physical pressure duel, dropping the ball as bait. When they charge, Rin adopts a position with a low center of gravity, to break their balance, using their own charge against them. He used this to get past Niou.
