Iharu Furuhashi

Iharu Furuhashi is a young officer in the Third Division of the Defense Force.
After the destruction of the Tachikawa base, he was transferred to the Fourth Division.

Appearance

Iharu is a tall, athletic young man with messy pink hair shaved on the sides, orange eyes, and sharp teeth.

In combat, Iharu wears the standard Defense Force combat suit, along with the regular uniform when on duty.

Personality

Iharu is a hot-blooded and proud individual who dislikes being inferior to others or losing, constantly trying to improve more than those he deems stronger than himself. For this reason, he targeted Leno Ichikawa, boasting to him whenever he got the chance. Iharu is described as a stubborn character who brightens every environment he is in.

Despite his seemingly confident attitude, Iharu hides a significant inferiority complex toward his peers, mainly due to his past successes which he now compares to his current life in the Defense Force, where most of his colleagues improve faster than him. In fact, when pushed into difficult and life-threatening situations, Iharu displays a more fragile and insecure side, being aware of his own weaknesses and even admiring someone stronger than him like Leno himself. Deep down, he values his team and teammates more than he would admit. Nevertheless, he has shown himself to be determined and very stubborn, refusing to give up and facing all obstacles on his path to improvement.

History

While Iharu was still in middle school, he was saved from a kaiju by Mina Ashiro. This event would later inspire him to become a member of the Defense Forces.

During his studies at Hachioji Neutralization Technical College, Iharu was always the best in his class, having the highest score on every test, being the best in sports and above all else, quickly becoming popular and admired by his classmates. This led Iharu to believe he could become the best in anything he wanted, developing an oversized ego. He later graduated as valedictorian.

The Man Who Became a Kaiju Arc

Iharu participated in the second stage of the Defense Forces exam. He finished third in the physical fitness test but kept his eyes fixed on Kikoru Shinomiya, desiring to crush her.

For the aptitude test, he managed to reach 14% released power of the Defense Force suit; however, during the test, he could not keep up with Kikoru. After the exam ended and the following accident, he and the other candidates were brought to safety. A few days later, he was officially appointed a member of the Defense Force.

Sagamihara Neutralization Operation at Dawn Arc
Two months after he and the others underwent marksmanship training, Iharu was able to draw 20% from his suit. He quickly went to boast about it to Leno. That night, he and the other boys were in the bathhouse talking about their reasons for joining the Defense Force. When they heard that Kafka Hibino had a history with Captain Mina Ashiro, they talked about it so much that they overheated and fainted. That night, a kaiju appeared and their first mission began. During the mission, deployed in Ikaruga's platoon, Iharu was left speechless by Leno's incredible combat prowess and progress. After the Honju's death, a large number of Yoju rushed toward the Defense Force, and as Iharu and Leno faced them, they encountered a strange disposal crew member. As the crew member revealed himself to be the kaiju that injured Kikoru, Leno and Iharu engaged in combat with him. After being injured, Leno asked Iharu to run away and call for backup. As Iharu fled, the remorse of always being protected—by Mina Ashiro in his past and now Leno—and not improving as Leno surpassed him took over; despite his injuries, he returned to save Leno's life and help him fight the kaiju. Although Leno was able to knock down the kaiju, the latter emerged from a barrage of corpses, ready to fight again. Iharu was then incapacitated but did his best to prevent the kaiju from killing Leno. When he realized he had no chance of saving him, Iharu prayed for his friend's life before Kaiju No. 8 appeared and saved Leno from the humanoid Kaiju, which was decapitated with a single punch, much to Iharu's shock. He could only watch as the battle between the kaiju continued until the Defense Force arrived.

After waking up in the hospital two weeks later, he and Leno were released and celebrated their first mission with the other members of the Corps. During the party, he discussed the mission with his peers. While they were all talking, he watched Soshiro announce Kafka's promotion to a full member of the Third Division Defense Force Corps.

Raid on Tachikawa Base Arc
During the raid, Iharu and Leno helped the Defense Force deal with the Wyvern-type kaiju. He then witnessed Kafka Hibino's transformation into Kaiju No. 8 to save everyone from a Yoju bomb.

Kaiju No. 8 Captured Arc
After Kafka was taken into custody by the Defense Force, Iharu couldn't help but be shocked by the news. Afterward, Mina herself asked him and the others to transfer to another division, as the Tachikawa base had been largely destroyed. Although initially reluctant, Iharu agreed to prove to Leno that he wouldn't lose to him.

At some point, Iharu and Leno were transferred to the Fourth Division.

Kaiju Weapon Arc
After the death of Director General Isao Shinomiya at the hands of Kaiju No. 9, Iharu and Leno paid tribute to him with the rest of their division.

Compatible User Arc
When Leno was chosen to become the user of Number 6 Weapon, made from the corpse of Kaiju No. 6, Iharu witnessed his compatibility test. A month later, he helped Leno and the rest of the Fourth Division in a test to measure Leno's capability with the suit. During the battle, Iharu was saved several times by Leno, and after lamenting his inability to improve like his peers, he saw Leno begin to uncontrollably abuse his power. At the climax, Leno fought while damaging his own body to beat the Honju and froze an entire area just to avoid getting outside help. While Captain Jugo Ogata was ready to intervene and declare Leno's failure, Iharu rushed to his friend, begging his captain to give him one more chance. Breaking the ice, he joined Leno and encouraged him to keep fighting. After carrying Leno on his back to safety and preparing a plan, Iharu used his peak released strength to expose the kaiju's core, giving Leno the opportunity to kill it. After successfully completing the mission, Iharu and Leno celebrated and were brought to the infirmary. Some time later, Iharu called Kafka, after the latter refused Leno's call, and expressed how much he feared Kafka's kaiju form despite still considering him a valuable ally.

Powers and Abilities

General Abilities: Iharu is a strong young officer within the Defense Force, proving to be easily one of the best recruits of his year. Before joining the Defense Force, he was consistently ranked number one in his class, being the strongest of his peers. In combat, Iharu is competent and determined enough to keep up with people like Leno Ichikawa and provide support even against major threats like Kaiju No. 9. He has even been compared to a division captain of Jugo Ogata's caliber, due to his innate abilities with his suit.

Powers

High Combat Power: Iharu was initially able to release 14% of his combat suit's power, then 20% after two months. Iharu's current stable released strength is 24%, allowing him to keep up with Leno and easily break large chunks of ice. However, Iharu's suit's released power reaches remarkable peaks when he engages an enemy, jumping from only 24% to 42% in seconds, even fluctuating unpredictably in both directions. According to Captain Ogata, who even compared Iharu to himself, Iharu's released power is comparable to Ichikawa's and he has the potential to become a great soldier. Iharu is the third recorded case of a Flash Adapter, caused by a unique brain structure that does not allow his released strength to be maintained for long. Instead, he has a fast and explosive fighting style used to overwhelm his opponent. He has been taught combat methods that force him into a short trance. According to Captain Ogata, if he managed to master these techniques, the power generated by his ability to increase in an instant would likely exceed that of Leno Ichikawa. Iharu is now capable of releasing 88% of the suit's power.
Enhanced Strength: Iharu possesses enough physical strength to easily break ice and carry his injured teammates on his back over long distances.
Enhanced Speed: During one of his combat power peaks, Iharu is capable of dodging Honju attacks.
