Appearance
Hwang was a tall, muscular man with short, spiky black hair. When agitated or using his powers, his eyes glowed bright red. During his trip to Korea, he wore a red T-shirt and gray jeans, with a gold chain around his neck. While torturing Jinho, he wore black pants, a red tank top, and a bluish-gray jacket adorned with a flaming skull on the back.
Personality
Hwang was a selfish, murderous fool with little regard for human life. Consumed by overconfidence, he truly believed he could defeat far stronger opponents such as Sung Il-Hwan and Sung Jinwoo, never once considering the possibility of losing. Like his brother, he was a bully who enjoyed abusing his power and targeting those weaker than himself.
Despite his despicable nature, Hwang deeply respected power, as shown when he nervously backed down after Thomas Andre silenced him with a show of strength. He could also be cunning when necessary, deliberately kidnapping Jinho despite warnings, knowing Thomas would intervene and shield him from the consequences if Jinwoo tried to kill him. However, since Hwang clearly never imagined Jinwoo could be stronger than Thomas, this miscalculation ultimately led to a well-deserved death.
History
Shortly before the main story began, Norma Selner offered Hwang a promotion, and he left for America without hesitation, eventually joining the Scavenger Guild under Thomas Andre's leadership. This move caused him to be seen as a traitor by Koreans, damaging his reputation back home. Even his brother resented him for abandoning his homeland for money and power.
Dungeon & Lizards Arc
Years after defecting to the U.S., Hwang's brother was suddenly killed during a raid gone wrong. Correctly deducing that Jinwoo or Jinho— the raid's only survivors— were responsible, Hwang flew to Korea to track them down and take revenge.
Red Gate Arc
Upon his arrival in Korea, Hwang was met by Woo Jinchul, who had been sent to escort him wherever he needed. Though surprised to see Woo, Hwang made it clear that he intended to avenge his brother's death and warned him not to get in his way. Using his phone, Dongsoo then tracked Jinwoo via his Hunter license and learned he was currently inside a Gate. He immediately ordered Woo to take him there.
Unfortunately for Hwang, Jinwoo was in a Red Gate previously purchased by the White Tiger Guild. Believing Jinwoo to be dead and that his trip had been in vain, Hwang almost fought Baek Yoonho after concluding that Ahn Sangmin, one of his employees, knew something about Jinwoo and was hiding it. Realizing he wouldn’t get what he wanted without causing a scene, Hwang ultimately gave up and returned to the U.S. the next day.
Demon Castle Arc
Hwang Dongsoo was called to interrogate Sung Il-Hwan, who had emerged from a Gate. Since Il-Hwan spoke only Korean and had poor English skills, Hwang—being Korean-born—was chosen to talk to him. Hwang refused to answer any of Il-Hwan's questions. When Il-Hwan warned him of an imminent threat, Hwang dismissed it, saying the world was full of powerful Hunters to handle such dangers. Il-Hwan noted that Hwang seemed strong, but even that wouldn’t be enough. Hwang read Il-Hwan's profile and saw he was married with two children—one being Jinwoo Sung. When Hwang asked for his son’s name and received confirmation, he showed a sinister expression, prompting Il-Hwan to ask why. Hwang replied that Jinwoo was dead and would soon be joined by his father. In response, Il-Hwan brutally beat Hwang into a pulp, causing massive damage to the building they were in. Hwang later woke up in a hospital and recalled Il-Hwan’s warning to stay away from his family, or even death wouldn't save him.
Jeju Island Arc
When word spread of Korea launching a fourth raid on Jeju Island, Hwang asked the Korean Hunters Association to let him join the strike team so he could avenge his brother. However, the Association saw through his motives and rejected his request, forcing him to remain in the U.S.
International Guild Conference Arc
When the Bureau announced that Jinwoo would represent Korea at the upcoming International Guild Conference, Thomas summoned Hwang and warned him not to go after Jinwoo. Though Hwang seemingly agreed, he had already plotted the month prior to avenge his brother by targeting Jinho. While Jinwoo was at the Bureau, Hwang kidnapped Jinho from his hotel and took him to an abandoned factory on the outskirts of town. However, thanks to his shadow soldiers, Jinwoo quickly located Hwang and used Shadow Exchange to teleport to his location.
Despite being outclassed, Hwang refused to back down and tried to attack Jinwoo after the latter refused to answer his questions and struck first. It was futile—Jinwoo easily deflected his blows and brutally beat him in the resulting skirmish. Before Jinwoo could kill him, Thomas arrived at the factory and ordered Hwang to let Jinho go. Jinwoo, however, refused and simply tossed Hwang aside to deal with him later.
After defeating Thomas, Jinwoo killed Hwang and extracted his shadow, naming it Greed to add to his army.
Epilogue
After the Rulers used the Cup of Reincarnation one last time at Jinwoo’s request, a new timeline was created where humanity had no knowledge of magical creatures. As a result, Hwang never became a Hunter and was never killed by Jinwoo as he had been in the original timeline.
Ragnarok
Decades later, in the revised timeline, Hwang regained his powers and became a Hunter once more. However, he soon became a servant of the Itarim, forcing Il-Hwan to kill him a second time, and Suho—Jinwoo’s son—to turn him back into a shadow soldier.
