Biography
Wakabayashi is an extraordinary goalkeeper who can take almost any ball thrown at him. Not many shots can pass Genzo. He is a charismatic boy, Genzo is also loyal to his friends and he is firm in his decisions. Genzo always keeps his feelings inside himself. Since childhood, he has aimed to be the best guardian in the world. He tended to be selfish, and to boast about his skills before he met and played a few games with Tsubasa Ozora.
At the age of 12 he went to West Germany with his coach Tatsuo Mikami. There he met Karl-Heinz Schneider, and from there their rivalry started. Three years later, the All Japan Youth came to West Germany, and then the match between Hamburger SV and Japan began. Hamburg started with Wakabayashi and Schneider, while Japan had Kojiro Hyuga.
At first, Hamburg's defense seemed too lazy. Schneider scored 3 goals against Ken Wakashimazu, and the power of his shot had injured Wakashimazu's left arm. Schneider was disappointed by this. Then Yuzo Morisaki enters and conceded two more goals. The result, Hamburg won 5-1. Wakabayashi told Hyuga that the last goal was just a gift for Japan.
After that, Mikami saw Wakabayashi's sadness and told him that he was sorry for him but Wakabayashi answers that he has nothing to be sorry for and that he was happy for Hyuga. Wakabayashi also asked if he could be a member of the Japan team. Mikami accepted and he became the second goalkeeper of the team, using the number 22, he was on the bench until the game against the West Germany Jr. Youth, since the right hand of Wakashimazu was injured. Wakashimazu said that if his hand was injured, he would not allow Wakabayashi to play, but he had to play at that time. Japan won 3-2 against West Germany.
In the World Youth Championship, both his arms were injured because of Brian Cruyfford and Stefan Levin. However, he always managed to protect Japan's goal in the Asian preliminaries of the World Youth Championship. His arm recovered when the final tournament started.
In En route to 2002, FC Bayern Munich, with Schneider, Levin and Shunko Sho, won 2-1 against Hamburg. Due to the "unnecessary" overlap of Wakabayashi near the end of this game, the Hamburg coach held a grudge against Wakabayashi, and he ended up not being able to play more. Thus, he joined the U-22 Japan. He perfectly defended Japan's goal in the early Asian qualifiers, giving a sense of security to the team. However, being seriously injured in his eye during the match against Australia, he became unable to play the rest of the preliminary round.
