Frieren is the main protagonist of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End.
She was the mage of the Hero Party and traveled alongside Himmel the Hero, Eisen the Warrior, and Heiter the Priest on a ten-year journey to defeat the Demon King. After Himmel's death, Frieren began traveling with Fern and Stark to visit Aureole and speak with Himmel once more.

Personality
Frieren is an elf mage characterized by her calm, introverted, and contemplative nature. Having lived for over a thousand years, she has developed a unique perception of time, making her often appear emotionally distant or slow to react to events that seem immediate to humans. Her detachment can sometimes be mistaken for coldness, but this trait is more a reflection of her difficulty connecting emotionally with short-lived species.
Despite this apparent distance, Frieren is sensitive and capable of deep affection. Her grief over the deaths of Himmel and her former companions reveals an emotional complexity she rarely expresses. Her journey, initially motivated by the desire to understand human emotions better, becomes an introspective quest filled with nostalgia and regret for what she failed to express in the past.
Although generally calm and peaceful, Frieren is also capable of ruthlessness when facing threats. As a battle-hardened mage, she has no hesitation in eliminating dangerous enemies. She displays surprising clarity and pragmatism in combat, shaped by centuries of experience.
Her humor is subtle and sometimes sarcastic. She enjoys teasing her traveling companions and can show great irony. Her personality becomes more expressive as her journey progresses, particularly in the company of Fern and Stark, who gradually bring her out of her shell.
Appearance
Frieren has the youthful appearance typical of elves, which belies her advanced age. She has long pale blonde hair, usually tied in a low braid with strands framing her face, and striking purple eyes that give her a mysterious, ethereal aura. Her slender, delicate frame adds to her otherworldly presence.

Frieren generally wears a white tunic adorned with golden patterns, a dark skirt, and a short cloak. Her attire blends magical and priestly aesthetics, reflecting both her status as a legendary mage and her ascetic lifestyle. Frieren is one of the most powerful mages of her era. Her magical skill is the result of centuries of study, practice, and combat. She has learned thousands of spells, some trivial, others incredibly powerful. Her knowledge is vast, and her mastery of magic unparalleled among modern mages.
Her primary abilities include:
Mana Control: Frieren can precisely conceal her mana, allowing her to pass unnoticed even among other mages. She can also increase its output considerably when needed, overwhelming her opponents.
Combat Spells: She can cast offensive spells with devastating power, ranging from magical projectiles to wide-area destruction. Her control is so advanced that she can adjust the scale and type of magic to her opponents.
Defensive and Sealing Magic: Frieren knows many barrier, healing, and sealing spells, including those used against demons and corrupted entities.
Teleportation and Spatial Manipulation: She uses teleportation spells to travel quickly or escape dangerous situations.
Spell Analysis and Adaptation: Frieren is capable of analyzing enemy spells in real-time and finding effective counters, reflecting her immense battle experience.

Zoltraak: A high-speed magical projectile spell she often uses in combat. Despite its apparent simplicity, it is extremely powerful and can pierce most magical defenses.
Deluge of Light Spears: A powerful rain of magical spears that she uses against demon armies.
Illusory Magic: She can create highly realistic illusions, useful for infiltration or distraction.
Sealing Spells: Particularly used against demons, these are complex incantations she often uses after weakening her enemies.
Pinnacle of Magic: This offensive spell is regarded by Fern as the ultimate expression of magical power—"The Pinnacle of Magic." It is used as a last resort by Frieren’s clone. The spell emits no detectable mana and is unrecognizable as a spell by its targets, making it extremely difficult to anticipate. It appears to generate a telekinetic force that violently repels the target. The attack is so powerful that it slams Fern against a wall and shatters her staff. However, the spell leaves the caster completely defenseless immediately after casting. Frieren notes that she had not used it in approximately 80 years, implying she last resorted to it during the Hero Party’s final battle against the Demon King.
Mana Strike: Provoked by Solitär’s illusion that Fern and Stark had been killed, a silent yet furious Frieren deflects Solitär’s Mana Strike and detonates it against her. Although Frieren is not yet as skilled in the use of this technique as Solitär, she is still capable of wielding it effectively in a high-pressure situation.

Defensive Barriers
Like most modern mages, Frieren can cast defensive magic in the form of hexagonal protective barriers. These can shield specific locations or envelop the caster and are primarily used against offensive magic, such as Zoltraak. - Unnamed Protection Spell: A unique defensive spell developed by Frieren after analyzing Macht’s curse, Diagoldze, over a two-month period. This spell successfully nullifies Diagoldze, rendering it ineffective.

Sealing Magic
A highly advanced spell used to seal the powerful demon Qual, transforming him into stone. The seal remained intact for over eighty years before showing signs of instability. -
Golem Magic
Frieren can animate rocks into puppet-like golems. She can form humanoid golems from disjointed stones, often using them for amusement. She also creates a giant golem version during her battle against her clone in the Tomb of the King Ruins. The golem is fully maneuverable and capable of mimicking other spells cast by Frieren. -
Magic Dispelling
Frieren can analyze enemy spells and dispel them effectively. Her staff glows gold when performing this magic. This technique is first showcased during her confrontation with Aura's undead army, where she liberates the corpses controlled by Aura’s Auserlese spell. -
Poison Identification Spell
Frieren can identify the nature of poison or venom through a magical reaction. However, since poison analysis typically falls under a priest’s role, this is not her strength. For example, she fails to identify the poison affecting Stark after a snakebite. -
Goddess Magic
Lacking the aptitude of a priest, Frieren is generally unable to cast advanced forms of Goddess Magic. However, she can perform basic spells—such as simple diagnostic magic—when using a Holy Scripture. -
Illness Identification Spell
With the aid of a scripture, Frieren can diagnose simple ailments, such as the common cold. -
Unnamed Restraining Spell
This spell manifests as a glowing golden rope used to immobilize opponents. Frieren employs it to bind Denken and Laufen to a tree during the First-Class Mage Exam’s opening trial. -
Unnamed Memory Transfer Spell
A form of advanced mental magic used to transfer memories between individuals. Frieren uses this spell to receive Denken’s memories.

Flower Field Creation Spell
Frieren inherited this spell from her mentor Flamme. It allows the user to grow a field of flowers, provided they have seen them before. The spell holds deep sentimental value for Frieren. In accordance with Flamme’s final wishes, she uses it to surround her master’s grave with flowers and rarely invokes it due to the memories it brings. -
Swamp Rescue Spell
Used to retrieve someone sinking in a bottomless swamp. -
Bird-Catching Spell
Originally developed by hunters, this spell captures any birdlike creature. It emits a glowing light and has an effective range of about 50 cm. -
Life-Risking Treasure Chest Lock Spell
A powerful binding spell from common magic, used by the clone of Spiegel-Frieren to seal both the treasure chamber and the main body of the Spiegel. The spell remains active until the caster’s death.
Weaknesses
Despite possessing immense mana reserves, Frieren does not equate magical strength solely with mana quantity. She recognizes that talent and strategy are crucial factors in determining the outcome of a battle. Throughout her lifetime, she has lost eleven times to mages with less mana—four of whom were demons (including Qual and Macht), one an elf like herself, and six were humans.
Interruption in Mana Detection
Frieren’s mana detection ability becomes inactive whenever she casts a spell—an error common among novice mages. This makes her momentarily vulnerable to highly skilled opponents who can conceal their mana and strike while she is casting. However, due to her vast experience and reflexes, this weakness is rarely exploitable.

- Her favorite winter flower might be the "Ice Cherry Blossom."
- She dislikes onions. In Chapter 121, she tests an artifact that induces nightmares. The chapter’s cover art—which depicts Frieren surrounded by enormous onions—is implied to be her nightmare.
- Her hair is sometimes braided by Fern, who creates two distinct braid styles depending on her mood, though the differences are almost imperceptible. Frieren is also seen with curly hair on occasion, usually after escaping from a Mimic by blowing it up from the inside.
