Fern - Frieren

Fern is a young human mage who travels with Frieren as her apprentice and a member of the group.

She is a war orphan and refugee from the Southern Lands, later adopted by Heiter and entrusted to Frieren’s care after his death.

Personality

Fern has a mature personality, shaped by her upbringing, which often leads her to act like the group's caretaker. She constantly assists Frieren with everyday tasks such as waking her up (as she’s a heavy sleeper), feeding and dressing her, and cleaning up her messes. She acts the same way with Stark, scolding him for staying up late even though they’re around the same age.

Despite her maternal side, Fern is easily irritated and can act childishly when others don’t meet her expectations or offend her. In extreme cases, she sulks and completely ignores people trying to reconcile with her, although this can be resolved through gestures like feeding her or giving in to her wishes. She also tends to follow and observe others when she is suspicious or curious rather than confronting them directly—such as when she trailed Frieren after suspecting her of poor financial decisions or when she investigated Stark while struggling to find the right birthday gift for him.

Fern is also a very loyal apprentice and has the discipline to train rigorously from a young age, allowing her to become an accomplished mage recognized by Frieren. She rarely cracks under pressure and keeps her cool in battle despite injuries or facing opponents more powerful or experienced than herself. Her commitment to magic stems from the trauma of losing her parents young and her later adoption by Heiter. After nearly giving up on life, Heiter convinced her to live on to preserve her cherished memories. As a result, she became deeply dedicated and mature enough to learn magic and prove to Heiter that he could die peacefully, without regrets or concern for her. Fern clings to magic because without it, she feels as though she’s lost in darkness.

Appearance

Fern is a young human girl with violet eyes and long purple hair reaching her waist, with bangs and two longer strands framing her face in a hime cut, partially tied back. After turning sixteen, Fern became taller than Frieren and has a more developed figure. Her mature and calm demeanor gives her a typically stoic expression, rarely showing strong emotion. Her features are characteristic of people from the Southern Lands.

During her travels with Frieren, Fern is most often seen wearing a long white buttoned dress with a Victorian-style bodice, frilled collar, puffy white sleeves, and black boots. Outdoors, she wears a long black hooded coat with a gray lining. For her sixteenth birthday, Frieren gifted her a butterfly-shaped hair ornament, which Fern wears at the back of her head to tie her hair. She also frequently wears a mirrored lotus bracelet on her left wrist, given to her by Stark for her eighteenth birthday.

Personal Items
As a mage, Fern wields a long wooden staff wrapped in purple ribbons, gifted to her by Heiter. The staff was broken during her battle with Frieren’s clone Spiegel in the second phase of the First-Class Mage Exam. The broken staff led to a conflict between Frieren and Fern, which was resolved after Frieren took its remains to Richter, who fully restored it.

Winter Outfit
After the events in the Domain of Count Granat, the Count gifts Fern a dark blue long-sleeved dress, which she wears with a short light gray winter jacket and a blue scarf for cold weather. This replaces her previous winter outfit, which was just a brown shawl worn over her regular clothing.

Other Outfits
As a child, Fern had short purple bobbed hair with bangs and wore a large red ribbon on the side of her head. Her clothes resembled a smaller version of her current white buttoned dress and black cloak, paired with black Mary Jane shoes. Before being adopted by Heiter, she wore a light cape over her shoulders and had a locket with a photo of her family.

In Heiß, Fern chooses a light purple floral dress for her date with Stark. The dress reaches mid-calf and features wide sleeves to the elbows and a bow-tied collar with a small keyhole opening. She pairs it with white flats and a small white handbag. Fern opts for the floral dress instead of a black lace one.

Accessories
For her eighteenth birthday, Sein buys Fern a small brown pouch with a butterfly design and gives it to her as a gift.

Abilities

Since childhood, Fern has shown a talent for mana control and suppressing her presence. She can overwhelm powerful mages like Ehre with basic spells. According to Falsch, she is the youngest mage ever to pass the Third-Class Mage Exam with the highest score. Serie also acknowledges her talent, allowing Fern to pass the First-Class Mage Exam and stating that under her guidance, Fern could reach heights no other mage has attained.

• Mana Suppression: Like Frieren, Fern is skilled at concealing her mana—a skill she’s retained since childhood. She often sneaks up on individuals, including demons, undetected. She surprised the powerful demon Lügner despite his subordinate Linie’s expert detection skills. Fern also approached Wirbel, a mage strong enough to lead the Northern Magic Corps, without being noticed until she was right beside him. Frieren even admits she struggles to sense Fern when her mana is hidden. Fern may even be better than Frieren at this, as she can move while completely suppressing her mana, whereas Frieren must remain still.

• Mana Detection: Fern has shown greater mana detection capabilities than anyone introduced so far. She sensed instability in Serie’s mana, something even Lernen—Serie’s apprentice for over fifty years and the top First-Class Mage—failed to notice. Serie was so impressed that she immediately offered to mentor Fern, despite originally intending to reject her.
• Casting Speed: While Fern lacks Frieren’s vast mana and technique, her strength lies in her incredibly fast spell casting. According to Frieren, battles end faster when Fern is involved. In her fight against Lügner, she overcame his endurance-focused strategy by firing off multiple instances of Zoltraak in rapid succession to overwhelm his attacks.

Spells

• Offensive Magic: Zoltraak – Fern’s signature and only offensive spell. She has practiced it since childhood, mastering it to the point of casting multiple, high-speed shots. She can also increase the density of her Zoltraak blasts while maintaining speed—an impressive feat praised by the Greater Demon Solitär.
• Defensive Magic – Like most modern mages, Fern can conjure protective hexagonal barriers either to shield specific areas or enclose herself. With this, she blocked multiple Zoltraak shots from its creator, Qual.
• Clothing-Transparency Spell – A spell that reveals hidden items underneath what is recognized as clothing, often used to detect concealed weapons.
• Levitation Spell – A telekinetic spell used to float targets in the air. Fern uses it for everyday tasks like clearing debris from a beach and in combat to retrieve her staff.
• Bird-Capture Spell – A hunting-originated spell that traps birds or bird-like creatures with a magical glow. It has a 50 cm range.
• Clean and Pristine Clothing Spell – A legendary spell from the mythical era, gifted to Fern by Serie after she passed the First-Class Mage Exam. Any clothing Fern casts it on becomes clean, spotless, and floral-scented.
