Chôji Akimichi

Chôji Akimichi

Chōji Akimichi is one of the main protagonists in the Naruto series.

He is a chūnin from the Hidden Leaf Village, a member of the Akimichi clan, and part of Team Asuma, originally led by Asuma Sarutobi. Alongside Shikamaru Nara and Ino Yamanaka, he forms the new "Ino-Shika-Chō" trio, just like their fathers before them. He is the sixteenth head of the Akimichi clan.

Skills

Chōji's character is intriguing over time: initially portrayed as a certified "loser," he evolved to become one of the most powerful in his class. One constant remains his keen sense of analysis, which he demonstrated multiple times, both in terms of food and combat (notably during the final round of the Chūnin Exams).

Taijutsu

As a member of the Akimichi clan, Chōji has a somewhat stocky build. However, this also means he can use all of his clan’s techniques, such as Partial Expansion Jutsu and Human Boulder. As a genin, he lacked confidence in himself, yet he possessed devastating taijutsu, even more so than Kiba. He showcased his full capabilities against Jirōbō, where he used Partial Expansion Jutsu and the most powerful technique of the Akimichi clan: "Caloric Control." However, he had to rely on the Akimichi clan’s pills, which granted him explosive power but had devastating effects on his body. He crushed Jirōbō with a colossal expansion, demonstrating his mastery of his clan's techniques.

In the second part of the series, Chōji became even more powerful. He mastered Partial Expansion Jutsu and could deliver incredibly strong blows. His techniques gained strength, including his Expansion Jutsu and Human Boulder. During his fight against Kakuzu, he revealed a new technique: the Crushing Palms, which were evidently very powerful. However, he still lacked complete confidence in his abilities, which lowered his potential and prevented him from attacking his master during the war. It was only during the Fourth Great Shinobi War, thanks to his father and comrades, that he fully trusted himself. His power then became immense. He grew to a gigantic size, matching his father's height. He also mastered the Caloric Control technique without needing the Akimichi clan’s Three-Color Pills, which granted him butterfly wings and exponentially increased his strength, combining it with his enormous size. From that moment on, he had complete confidence in himself, and thanks to him, the Fourth Division was able to defeat Kakuzu and Asuma. He even engaged in a two-on-one battle alongside his father against Tobi’s giant statue but ultimately failed.

History

During his childhood, Chōji was ostracized and looked down upon by other children. He was not very skilled when it came to "playing ninja." According to them, any team he was on was bound to lose, so they preferred to exclude him from the games. The day Chōji met Shikamaru, the latter still tried to include him, marking the beginning of their friendship.

Chūnin Exams

He had Asuma Sarutobi as his sensei and teamed up with Ino Yamanaka and Shikamaru Nara, forming Team 10. He completed several missions, and eventually, his sensei recommended him and his teammates for the Chūnin Selection Exams. He passed the first test, the written exam, and then began the Death Forest challenge, where he had to survive for three days. It was during this that he showcased his techniques, battling the Oto ninjas, Orochimaru’s subordinates, particularly against Zaku Abumi and his sound cannons. He participated in the qualifiers for the third test but was defeated by Dosu Kinuta. Dosu dodged his Human Bullet and let it crash into the wall. Then, turning Chōji’s Multiplication technique against him, he took advantage of the 80% water content in Chōji’s body to directly transmit his sonic waves into his body, knocking him out. Chōji was still happy about his friend Shikamaru’s victory.

A month later, he attended the final test and watched the fights of Sasuke, Shikamaru, and Naruto, but ended up falling asleep due to Kabuto’s genjutsu when Orochimaru’s attack began. A few minutes later, he was awakened by Sakura, who had resisted the genjutsu, and stayed on the sidelines during the confrontation between the Konoha ninjas and those from Oto and Suna, letting his sensei handle things. After the death of the Third Hokage and the appointment of the Fifth Hokage Tsunade, he congratulated Shikamaru for his promotion to Chūnin and told him that even though everyone had eyes only for Sasuke or Neji, he was the true genius of ninjutsu and strategy.

Mission to Retrieve Sasuke

When Sasuke left Konoha to join Orochimaru in the Hidden Sound village, Shikamaru, under Tsunade’s orders, formed an emergency team to pursue him and the Sound Quartet, who were tasked with escorting him to Oto. This team consisted of Shikamaru Nara, Kiba Inuzuka and his dog Akamaru, Neji Hyūga, Naruto Uzumaki, and Chōji Akimichi. Together, they set off in pursuit of the fugitives, ready to do anything to save Sasuke. When they finally caught up with them, they were driven out of the bushes by an explosive kunai thrown by Sakon and then trapped by Jirōbō in his stone Doton prison, whose walls continuously drained their chakra.

While Shikamaru provided a diversion, Chōji regained his strength by eating a bag of chips and then managed to free them by smashing the stone prison's wall with his Human Bullet. After escaping, they almost got crushed by a massive rock thrown by Jirōbō, but once again, Chōji saved the day by destroying the rock with another Human Bullet. After being knocked away by Jirōbō’s knee strike followed by a shoulder charge, Chōji announced his decision to face the large Chūnin himself while the others continued to pursue the remaining three. He handed out military-rejuvenating pills to all his friends. As his friends left, Chōji took out a box of special pills from the Akimichi clan and swallowed the first one, the spinach pill.

Empowered by the pill’s effects, he blocked Jirōbō’s furious charge, lifted him off the ground, and sent him rolling on the floor. However, he soon started feeling the violent side effects of the pill. Going all out, he increased his mass tenfold, wrapped a large belt full of kunai around his massive body, and used it to charge directly at Jirōbō, spinning furiously and launching his Spiked Human Bullet. Jirōbō then summoned a stone barrier to protect himself, but as Chōji broke through it effortlessly, Jirōbō activated his Cursed Mark and grabbed Chōji with both hands, stopping his rotation. The kunai slashed his flesh without causing any harm, and Jirōbō hit Chōji squarely with his Hoshō technique, the Destructive Palm.

Then, thinking of all the effort he had made to improve, Chōji decided to swallow the second pill, which further boosted his strength, and used his Bubun Baika, Partial Enlargement, on his arm to grab Jirōbō and crush his bones.

Jirōbō threw him into the air with a punch. Chōji then used Chō Baika, Jumbo Enlargement, becoming so enormous that he crushed part of the forest along with Jirōbō under his weight. Jirōbō then activated Stage 2 of the Cursed Mark and lifted Chōji’s gigantic form into the air with his Shogekishō technique, palm facing the sky. As Chōji reverted to his normal size and crashed to the ground, Jirōbō grabbed him by the throat and slammed his head violently into the ground. After insulting Chōji and his friends and stealing his last chip while taunting him, Jirōbō prepared to finish him off with his Asshō technique, Palm Facing Hell.

Chōji, remembering his meeting with Shikamaru and the beginning of their friendship, then swallowed the last pill, the chili one, which would likely be fatal, determined to take Jirōbō down with him.

Chōji seemed lost as Jirōbō slowly pummeled him. In one final effort, Chōji swallowed the red pill, knowing that by doing so, he risked his life. After swallowing the pill, butterfly wings made of chakra appeared on his back, but he began to rapidly shrink, and his strength increased a hundredfold. He then concentrated his chakra into his fist and landed a punch that instantly killed his opponent. He collapsed in front of a tree after reading the encouraging messages left by his companions. He was eventually saved by Tsunade, who created a medicine using a medical directory from the Nara clan to stop the harmful effects of the pills.

Part II: Hidan and Kakuzu

He was chosen to form one of the twenty squads tasked with locating the Akatsuki members who had entered the Land of Fire. His team, made up of Ino Yamanaka, Aoba Yamashiro, and Raidō Namiashi, met up with Asuma Sarutobi’s squad—Shikamaru Nara, Izumo Kamizuki, and Kotetsu Hagane—who were already facing off against the Akatsuki, but they arrived too late to save Asuma, who had been cursed by Hidan’s technique. Asuma died, but before passing, he gave his final advice to his students and asked Chōji to go on a diet. After Asuma’s burial, Team 10 set out to find the Akatsuki to avenge their master, with Kakashi Hatake accompanying them so that Tsunade would not oppose their mission. They followed Shikamaru's plan and separated Hidan and Kakuzu. Chōji, Ino, and Kakashi faced off against Kakuzu and discovered that he had five hearts, making him very difficult to kill, especially since each heart allowed him to use a different chakra nature. It wasn't until Naruto and Yamato arrived that they were able to deal with the rogue ninja.

Pain's Invasion

He helped Kakashi, alongside his father, to hold their ground against Tendō. However, Tendō’s unpredictability caused their strategy to fail. Shortly after, Chōji lost consciousness, and his father was severely injured by a missile from Shuradō. However, thanks to Tsunade’s slugs, Chōza was saved in time.

Fourth Great Ninja War

Naruto: The Akimichi Clan's Expansion Jutsu, Explained

During the Fourth Great Ninja War, Chōji was placed in the Fourth Division (long-range fighters), commanded by the Fifth Kazekage, with notable members like Temari and Shikamaru, who was leading the division to assist Gaara, the general and overall commander of the army. On the decision of the Headquarters, Gaara sent Chōji, Shikamaru, and Ino to the coast to support Darui’s First Division. While on their way to Darui’s front, they were contacted mentally by Inoichi from Headquarters, who tasked them with neutralizing the legendary Kinkaku from Kumo, the bearer of Kyūbi's chakra. Kinkaku had once severely injured the Second Hokage, Tobirama Senju. Chōji was doubtful, but Inoichi reminded him that the Ino-Shika-Chō trio was one of the greatest legends in the Shinobi World.

When they arrived on the battlefield, Chōji was very anxious about the upcoming battle. The Fourth Division ninjas launched a rain of kunai at Kinkaku, and Chōji took the opportunity to use his Human Bullet against him, but Kinkaku resisted the impact and easily threw Chōji into the air. Then, Shikamaru immobilized Kinkaku with his Kage Mane technique. Kinkaku broke free from the shadow's hold thanks to the power of Kyūbi and swung one of his tails, which stopped mere inches from Shikamaru’s face. He was saved by Ino’s Shintenshin technique, which transferred her mind into Kinkaku’s body. Darui then said Kinkaku’s name, forcing him to respond, activating the Amber Pot. Kinkaku was sucked into the pot, and Ino managed to exit his body just before being pulled in.

Later, Team 10 encountered a freshly resurrected Kakuzu, who was busy ripping out the heart of a shinobi from the Alliance to replenish his supply. Shikamaru said something related to shōgi, and Kakuzu deduced that they had defeated Hidan since he wasn't with him. Kakuzu then captured his fifth heart before being cut down by Izumo and Kotetsu, who had arrived to reinforce. Shikaku then assigned Team 10 to stop their former sensei, Asuma, as they knew him better than anyone else.

Shikamaru used his Shadow Bind to bring Asuma closer to Chōji, but Chōji couldn't bring himself to attack his teacher. Asuma struck Chōji and launched a deadly Fūton technique, the Wind Dust, which Chōji managed to dodge thanks to Ino’s help. Shikamaru and Ino tried to reason with Chōji, while Asuma insulted him by calling him a "fatty." Chōji charged at Asuma but hesitated at the last moment. Asuma attacked Chōji, but Ino blocked the blow by taking control of his body. She tried to reason with Chōji inside his mind, alongside his father and Shikamaru. As Asuma unleashed his Katon technique, the Burning Clouds, on Chōji, Chōza, in his giant form, saved his son by using his body as a shield, suffering severe burns in the process. Chōji told Ino she could lift her possession, and then, using his clan’s secret calorie control technique, he deployed butterfly wings and rapidly shrank in size. Ino was worried, but Chōza reassured her, explaining that it was just the clan’s technique, and since Chōji had activated it without the pills, there would be no side effects.

Asuma then asked Chōji if he was ready, to which Chōji confidently replied. Ino took control of two White Zetsu and sent them against Asuma, then Shikamaru used the Shadow Bind to force Asuma to jump to escape. Chōji used this moment to transform into a giant and struck Asuma with a powerful punch infused with massive chakra. Asuma was sent crashing into a rock and immobilized by one of his own weapons, thrown by Shikamaru, which latched onto his shadow. Asuma told his team that their formation was perfect before being sealed by the Sealing Unit.

Chōji then enlarged himself even more and asked Ino and Shikamaru for help to end the battle. In just a few hours, he crushed the White Zetsu, Kakuzu, and Hizashi Hyūga with his team, before Tobi and the Gedō Mazō statue appeared.

Chōji charged at the statue with his father, Chōza immobilized the statue, and Chōji struck it, but to no effect. He was pushed back, just like his father, by the statue. He reverted to his normal size and hid with the others until the statue left the battlefield.

After Shikaku informed the rest of the Alliance that Naruto was fighting the masked man, Chōji and the rest of the Konoha 11 set off to help him.

Against the Jūbi, Chōji and several ninjas from the Alliance desperately attempted to stop a Biju Bomb by using a simple Doton technique to create a wall. Despite their efforts, the overwhelming power of the Jūbi’s attack was too much, and their defense wasn’t enough to prevent the massive destruction caused by the Biju Bomb. This moment highlighted the immense power of the Jūbi and the determination of the Alliance's forces, who, even in the face of certain destruction, fought valiantly to protect their world.
