Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball is one of the most remarkable anime of the Battle Shonen genre. Yet, after four decades, it continues to evolve, influence new series and surprise its devoted fans. Dragon Ball is more popular than ever, and one of the key factors in its continued success is its ability to create exciting new transformations for its heroic characters. Anime often distills a character's enhanced strength into a flashy transformation that becomes the next step for that hero to match. Dragon Ball sets this precedent early on with its famous Super Saiyan transformation. However, this becomes the first step in a progressive level of strength. Dragon Ball follows a set pattern for most of its run, with predictable upgrades such as Super Saiyan 2, 3 and 4.

Dragon Ball Super has worked hard to reinvent the franchise's transformations, whether through color or character-specific transformations that place each character on their own scale of strength. Two of Dragon Ball's biggest and most powerful transformations are Goku's mastered Ultra Instinct form and Gohan's Beast transformation. These two transformations establish a new status quo for some of Dragon Ball's strongest Saiyans. Gohan Beast and Mastered Ultra Instinct Goku have yet to meet, but there is strong evidence to suggest who would prevail if these two were ever pushed into battle against each other.
What is Gohan Beast and how strong is it?
Dragon Ball has fallen into a somewhat repetitive pattern where it's usually Goku or Vegeta who celebrate the great victories of each story arc. This makes sense to some extent, since they are the strongest characters in Dragon Ball , but it can turn into a never-ending cycle when they are the only characters to shine. Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is a refreshing departure from this pattern, temporarily removing Goku and Vegeta from the picture so that Gohan and Piccolo can step into the spotlight and do the heavy lifting. Super Hero introduces the return of the Red Ribbon Army, terrorizing the planet with two leading androids, Gamma 1 and Gamma 2 , as well as a volatile and incomplete version of Cell Max. These colossal threats push Gohan and Piccolo beyond their limits, leading to the debuts of Gohan Beast and Orange Piccolo.

Gohan Beast proves to be the stronger of the two transformations and the breakthrough that finally saves the day. Gohan Beast is triggered when Gohan believes Piccolo has perished. This new transformation is in fact the evolved state of Gohan's potentially unlocked Ultimate form. Ultimate Gohan was already extremely impressive, but Gohan Beast takes on a purple aura, silver hair and red eyes, all of which give off intimidating vibes. Gohan Beast is rewarded with extreme strength, but he also executes his own deadly variant of Piccolo's special beam cannon, Death Light, which is the only attack that proves powerful enough to eliminate Red Ribbon's evil creation.
What is Mastered Ultra Instinct and what are its strengths?
Goku has always been a Super Saiyan pioneer, but his participation in the Tournament of Power triggers a curious transformation that sets him on a uniquely divine path. Ultra Instinct became Goku's remarkable new transformation and left such an impression on the public that Vegeta even developed his own complementary Ultra Ego transformation. Ultra Instinct is a capricious, imprecise state of mind that involves several stages before the user achieves perfection and takes full advantage of its power. Goku experiences both stand-alone Ultra Instinct and Ultra Instinct before finally getting his first glimpse of Perfected Ultra Instinct - also known as Mastered Ultra Instinct - during his confrontation with Super Full Power Jiren, the most powerful warrior in the universe 11 .
Perfected Ultra Instinct is the natural state of every angel, a testament to its incredible power and usefulness. Perfected Ultra Instinct also comes with other benefits that were previously impossible for Goku, such as the creation of a giant energy avatar that can fight for Goku. Perfected Ultra Instinct is the flashiest of these forms, but Goku goes even further in his battle against Gas. True Ultra Instinct allows Goku to harness and retain his Saiyan nature. This means he's less emotionally detached than in Perfected Ultra Instinct. This becomes Goku's preference, as Perfected Ultra Instinct is a Zen state that is difficult for him to maintain and is contrary to his natural instinct for fighting and emotional conflict.

What are the greatest achievements of these transformations?
Dragon Ball characters have saved not only the planet, but the entire multiverse, time and time again. Their achievements are countless, yet more often than not, a character and his transformation are as strong as the villain he defeats. Goku uses Mastered Ultra Instinct to stand up to Jiren and finally defeat Planet-Eater Moro after merging with an entire planet. Mastered Ultra Instinct's evolved state, True Ultra Instinct, is also responsible for turning the tide in Goku's battle with Gas. These are remarkable victories, but it's worth noting that Gas is actually killed by Black Freezer, who easily eliminates True Ultra Instinct Goku and Ultra Ego Vegeta.
Gohan Beast is a new revelation, essential to the destruction of Cell Max. Goku is not here for this feud, to test Ultra Instinct's power against this threat. However, Piccolo points out that Gohan has the potential to be the strongest man on the planet, and his Gohan Beast transformation seems to be the culmination of this idea. Toriyama also reiterated that Gohan Beast should be on a par with Goku and Vegeta. It's extremely exciting that Dragon Ball now has characters like Gohan, Piccolo, Goku, Vegeta and Broly all with comparable strength, rather than power being reserved for just one or two characters.
What are the limits of these new transformations?
Gohan Beast and Mastered Ultra Instinct Goku haven't had to face each other in battle, and hopefully never will. Toriyama has indicated that there's a lot in common between these transformations when it comes to brute strength alone. That said, Ultra Instinct is a much more restrictive process and full of limitations that gave Goku pause. The only reason Goku is even able to access Perfected Ultra Instinct and beyond is his extensive training with Merus , a former Angel. However, Ultra Instinct remains a mixed bag even after all that extra work. Goku remarks after Gas's defeat that he can't maintain True Ultra Instinct for very long and that it's still an incredibly exhausting and temperamental process. Goku has greater control with True Ultra Instinct than with Perfected Ultra Instinct, but it still forces him to act on an accelerated timetable.
Alternatively, there appears to be no limitation on Gohan's Beast form. He accesses this new power during a moment of intense distress, but he doesn't need to exhaust himself during rigorous training for his body to withstand this increase in power. Gohan even seems to be able to switch his beast form on and off at will, as when Pan sees him afterwards and is startled by his more aggressive stare. Admittedly, Dragon Ball has provided less information on Gohan Beast, so there could be limitations and major setbacks that simply haven't revealed themselves yet. As things stand, Gohan Beast would beat Mastered Ultra Instinct Goku, even with the latter's giant energy avatar. Gohan Beast doesn't operate under a time limit and can simply wait out the clock while Goku exhausts himself and loses the state of consciousness necessary for transformation.
