Appearance
Ashborn was a towering and muscular shadow warrior, with violet hair, blazing eyes, two curved black horns, and sharp claws. He wore a jet-black suit of armor, a long smoky black cape, and wielded a sword of pure black.
As a sovereign, Ashborn appeared as a sturdy white knight with large white wings, long silver hair, and glowing white eyes. He also wore a silver robe, light beige armor, and a blue-gray cape, wielding a white sword with a light beige guard and a gray hilt.
Personality
Ashborn deeply cared for life and held a compassionate attitude toward humanity. He also harbored a profound desire for peace and was weary of the endless war between the Monarchs and the Rulers, which led him to entrust his ambitions and powers to a human in hopes of putting an end to the carnage once and for all. However, he remained blindly loyal to the Absolute Being and continued to fight for him, even after learning the truth about his existence.
History
Centuries ago, Ashborn fought alongside the other Rulers in a devastating war against the Monarchs at the behest of their god, the Absolute Being. When his fellow Rulers revolted against the Absolute Being—who had used them as pawns for his own amusement—Ashborn was the only one to remain loyal to their creator and attempted to stop them. However, despite his efforts, they easily defeated him and left him for dead.
With his wounds fatal, Ashborn believed it was the end for him and prepared to die. However, before death could take him, he discovered that the Absolute Being had hidden a monstrous power within his body. He activated it immediately, transforming into the Shadow Monarch. His health restored and strength greatly increased, Ashborn returned to the battlefield to continue the fight. But upon his return, he realized he was too late—the rebellion had already ended, and the Absolute Being was dead.

After the capture of Legia by the Rulers, Ashborn realized that the Monarchs would lose unless he intervened and decided to offer them his aid—an offer they reluctantly accepted. Unfortunately for Ashborn, even though he managed to stabilize the balance of power and prolong the war, his overwhelming power caused fear in both camps. Eventually, two of the nine Monarchs, Rakan and Baran, turned against him. Although Ashborn easily defeated them in battle and killed Baran in retaliation for his betrayal, his shadow army was nearly annihilated during the operation.
Just after killing Baran, the Rulers appeared before Ashborn and begged for forgiveness. Although Ashborn initially rejected their peace offering and furiously demanded they kill him to finally end the war, the Rulers persisted in their plea. Overwhelmed by emotion, Ashborn was unable to respond. Seeking revenge on Rakan, Ashborn left the battlefield and went into hiding to rebuild his shadow army, thus allowing the Rulers to defeat the Monarchs and force them into hiding. However, not long after, Ashborn returned to the Monarchs, and Antares—the strongest among them—was glad to welcome him back into their ranks, as two of their number had perished and the rest remained severely weakened from their defeat by the Rulers.
Centuries later, when the Monarchs launched their assault on the human world, Ashborn followed them, seeking to find his place in the universe, as he had never truly felt a part of the world of chaos. At the same time, he began searching for a suitable human vessel with the help of a mage named Kandiaru, who agreed to assist him in exchange for immortality and created a special program designed for this purpose.
While Kandiaru was searching for a human with the physical and mental traits required to serve as a vessel for the Shadow Monarch, Ashborn noticed that one human had exceeded the limits of the program Kandiaru had created and defied all its rules and expectations: Sung Jinwoo. Despite his pathetic weakness and imminent death, Jinwoo always managed to survive. The determination he showed by risking his life over and over again for his family impressed Ashborn so deeply that he eventually came to believe Jinwoo deserved to become his vessel.
D-Rank Dungeon Arc
Despite Kandiaru’s disapproval of his decision, Ashborn chose Jinwoo to be his host a few months before the Monarchs planned to begin hunting down the rulers of the human world. He slowly began turning Jinwoo into a vessel strong enough to fully absorb his powers through the System.
Double Dungeon Arc
When Jinwoo reached level 100, Kandiaru invited him back to the Double Dungeon so Ashborn could take control of him and make him his vessel. However, Kandiaru was unaware that Ashborn no longer intended to possess Jinwoo, but instead wanted to transfer his powers to him so Jinwoo could succeed him as the next Shadow Monarch. Ashborn chose to betray Kandiaru by removing him from the System, breaking their agreement, and giving Jinwoo his black heart. This allowed Jinwoo to regain control of his body and kill Kandiaru after the latter realized Ashborn had betrayed him and joined the Rulers.
Monarch War Arc
When Jinwoo was killed in battle by Rakan, he was seemingly transported back in time to the moment when the System first chose him as a Player. Since he retained his appearance and powers, Jinwoo initially believed the experience to be real. However, after speaking with an alternate version of Go Gunhee, he eventually realized that everything around him was an illusion. Furious, he shouted at the spellcaster to stop wasting time and reveal himself. To his great surprise, the one behind it all turned out to be Ashborn.
Choosing not to waste time, Ashborn introduced himself to Jinwoo and explained everything he needed to know—including his own backstory, the true identities of their enemies, and the reason Jinwoo had been chosen as both his vessel and successor. Once he had finished, Ashborn gave Jinwoo two choices: live forever in his imaginary world, or return and complete the fight against the Monarchs. Naturally, Jinwoo chose the second option, and Ashborn bid him farewell before he returned to reality and reclaimed the true powers of the Shadow Monarch.
Academy Arc
After learning from his wife, Cha Hae-In, that their son Suho was being rejected by his classmates at school due to his growing magical powers, Jinwoo thought deeply about it and realized that the Absolute Being had originally given Ashborn the powers of the Shadow Monarch as a means to destroy his creations—should they ever rebel against him.
Abilities
As the Shadow Monarch and the Greatest Fragment of Brilliant Light, Ashborn was one of the strongest beings of his kind, rivaled only by Antares, and arguably one of the most powerful entities to ever exist.
Immeasurable Strength: Ashborn possessed incredible physical power. He was capable of decimating entire armies with brute force alone, brutally defeating two Monarchs simultaneously in battle, and even crushing Baran’s skull with a single hand.

Power Bestowal: Ashborn had the ability to grant his powers to a human strong enough to handle them. However, due to the overwhelming nature of his strength, he was never able to find a human capable of doing so and was ultimately forced to create one himself through the System.
Shapeshifting: Ashborn could alter his appearance at will, taking on the likeness of someone else.
Umbrakinesis: As the Shadow Monarch, Ashborn had complete control over shadows and darkness, able to reshape them into anything he desired, including weapons and clothing.
Ruler’s Authority: Ashborn could move and control objects telekinetically. His version of the Ruler’s Authority was so powerful that even Baran could not resist its force.
Shadow Extraction: Ashborn could extract the shadows of his fallen enemies and add them to his army.
Shadow Exchange: Ashborn could use shadows as portals, allowing him to travel vast distances instantly.
Shadow Preservation: Ashborn could store his shadows in a reserve and monitor them by perceiving their senses.
Monarch’s Domain: Ashborn could increase the strength of all his active shadow soldiers by 50% during battle.
