Ami Mizuno is the civilian identity and current incarnation of Sailor Mercury. She is one of the four Inner Sailor Guardians and was the second Sailor Guardian recruited by Luna in the manga. She is an intelligent schoolgirl who is proficient with computers.

Nomenclature & Etymology
Etymology
Ami , the kanji for A (亜) translates as "Asia", "rank next" or "come after". The kanji for mi (美) translates to "beauty." Thus, her first name could be "Asian Beauty" or "Second Beauty", referring to the fact that she is the second to join the team.
Mizuno , the kanji for Mizu (水) translates to "water" while the kanji for non (野) translates to "plains", "field", "rustic" or "civil life". The syllable for no (の) also indicates possession, while the literal translation of his surname may be "water field" or "water civil", others may translate it as "of water".
Together, Ami Mizuno can mean "Second Beauty of Water".

Ami Mizuno is a teenage girl with short, dark blue hair that reaches her neck and blue eyes. Sometimes Ami will be seen wearing reading glasses. Like Usagi, she wears a standard sailor uniform from Juban Public Middle School and later a uniform from Juban High School.

Marine Sensi
Sailor Mercury's standard uniform consists of a white armored leotard over the chest, a blue sailor collar with three white stripes, a blue choker, a blue skirt with a white puffy belt above and light blue bows on the chest and back. . She wears a pair of blue knee-high boots with short heels and white triangular trim, white gloves with three blue arm connectors on the ends that reach just below her elbows, and a light blue circular gem in the center of her chest bow. Unlike the rest of the Senshi solar system (aside from Sailor Pluto), her uniform is sleeveless, giving the illusion of a bathing suit meant to recall Mercury's power over water. A golden tiara with an oval-shaped blue gem is located on her forehead, and for earrings, she has three blue studs on each ear. Additional accessories include the Mercury glasses, which she can summon at will by pressing one of her earrings, and a speaker that extends from her earring to the lower left.
As Super Sailor Mercury, the number of white stripes on her collar has been reduced to one, her choker has a yellow star with a blue gemstone attached to the center, she gains shoulder pads (the bottom being translucent), and the back waist bow has been widened and lengthened.
As the Eternal Sailor Mercury, her sailor uniform has changed dramatically. Her leotard no longer has chest armor and the gemstone in the middle of her tiara is star-shaped. Her earrings have a blue star hanging from a single blue stud. Her necklace is V-shaped with a yellow star in the center. Her navy collar has a singular gold band on it. The gem in the center of his chest bow is also star-shaped. In place of his shoulder pads are short, light blue bubble-shaped sleeves with two blue connectors at the ends; they have a somewhat translucent appearance. Her gloves are extended to reach her arms and her skirt now consists of two layers; blue on top and light blue on the bottom. Her belt is now composed of two ribbons, the bottom one being light blue and the top one being blue, the top one being very long and extending beyond her skirt. Her back bow is now back to its original size and her boots are now white and knee high. they have wider heels and blue v-shaped edges at the top that have yellow stars in the center.
Personality
Before she became friends with Usagi and the other Sailor Senshi, Ami was a shy girl who did not make friends easily. She preferred to spend time alone studying and reading books. In return, many of her classmates thought she was snobbish and arrogant because of her intelligence; even being superhuman because she always finished first in national exams. However, once Ami and Usagi became friends, opinions began to change.

Ami is described as a sweet, kind, gentle and loyal girl who is a little insecure. At first, she relies on the opinions of her mother, classmates, and teachers. As the series progresses, she becomes stronger and more confident. She is the most sensitive of the Inner Senshi and does not like conflict; especially the fights between Usagi and Rei.
Ami's parents are divorced; she lives with her mother in a condominium. Her mother still works, leaving Ami to take care of herself. She also dreams of becoming a doctor like her mother.
Her favorite subjects were math and science. She also has a secret love for romance novels and pop culture but is embarrassed to say so.
Development
As Artbook Infinity revealed, Ami was not included in the original codename expansion plans: Sailor V one shot . Instead, it featured Minako's very similar best friend, Hikaru Sorano. However, Ami was present when the concept was expanded to focus on Sailor Moon.
Ami and Hikaru look very much like Rena Kuramitsu from Naoko Takeuchi's unique story, Miss Rain. In the first edition of the manga, when Usagi saw Ami for the first time, she said that she looked like Rena. This reference was removed in the 2003 and subsequent editions of the manga. In the collection Materials , Naoko Takeuchi describes Ami as looking like Noriko Sakai : a J-pop idol of the early 1990s.
Naoko Takeuchi designed Ami as the "brain of the team", giving her a genius intelligence to make her look like she was not quite human. In the manga Shinsouban Vol. 3 , she revealed that the character was originally intended to be a cyborg and that she planned to lose an arm or be injured in some other way and die, but Takeuchi's editor objected. Part of this idea was eventually used in Hotaru . Her editor revealed, on several occasions, that Ami is her favorite character and in the manga Tankoubon Vol. 3, he said that he faxed Naoko Takeuchi drawings of Ami saying encouraging words while she was working on the manga.
Anecdotes
Ami's membership number in the Three Lights Fanclub was 25; the top number among Sailor Guardians.
In Japan, Sailor Mercury was the most popular Sailor Guardian during the initial release of the manga and anime in the 1990s, although she sometimes fell to second place in favor of Sailor Chibi Moon among younger viewers. This was mainly because Ami's docile and studious personality made her a role model for Japanese children.

In the parallel story Ami's First Love, it was revealed that Ami suffered from psychogenic hives, a stress-inducing disorder that caused her to break out in hives. In other words, it wasn't the love letters themselves that gave her the rash.
