10 Devil Fruits That Still Work in Water in One Piece

10 Devil Fruits That Still Work in Water in One Piece

Each Devil Fruit in One Piece is unique, but they all share a common weakness: The power of each Devil Fruit user is nullified when they enter the water.

Each user eventually ends up drowning, unable to swim. Some Devil Fruit powers remain active in water, and in rare cases, the Devil Fruit even works when part of the user's body is submerged.

Most Devil Fruits that can function in water belong to the Paramecia class, which is not surprising since Paramecias offer a wide range of superhuman abilities. Some Logias can also work because they control a specific element. Many of these Devil Fruits require creative usage, but most of the time, they work as long as the user's body is not fully submerged.

10. The Soul-Soul Fruit Creates Homies That Can Move in Water

First appearance in One Piece, season 15, episode 55, "Candy Lovers! Emperor Big Mom"

The Soul-Soul Fruit allowed Big Mom to become the most powerful female character in One Piece, as it grants her the ability to interact with and manipulate souls. She can manifest and extract the souls of people who fear her. Extracting a person’s entire soul results in their death, thus increasing Big Mom’s lifespan and strength. Big Mom can also place souls into inanimate objects, transforming them into Homies.

These Homies have their own minds and personalities, and most of the time, they obey Big Mom’s orders. The Soul-Soul Fruit can transform an entire ship into a Homie, allowing it to navigate without issue. There is a previous example: Big Mom successfully transformed Perospero’s candy construction into a sea Homie. It didn’t lose any of its strength and could move and float.

9. The Flame-Flame Fruit Propels the User in Water

First appearance in One Piece, season 4, episode 2, "Gathering the Strong! His Name Is Ace, Flame Fist"

The Flame-Flame Fruit grants its user the ability to create, control, and transform into fire at will. Like most Logia-type Devil Fruits, it grants intangibility, meaning that most attacks not related to Haki simply pass through the user's body. That said, water and water-based attacks directly counter this Devil Fruit, but its power can still pass through the water.

Portgas D. Ace demonstrated this during the Alabasta Saga with his personal raft, propelled by the Flame-Flame Fruit. The fruit’s flames can easily propel small ships on the open sea. The user can adjust their speed on the fly by increasing or decreasing the intensity of the flames. In one moment, they can navigate at high speed, and the next moment, move fast enough to dodge a hungry Sea King. As long as water doesn’t enter the ship, the flames of the Flame-Flame Fruit continue to burn and propel it.

8. The Lick-Lick Fruit Crosses the Ocean with Candy Constructions

First used in One Piece, season 19, episode 13, "A Giant Ambition - Big Mom and Caesar"

The Lick-Lick Fruit was one of the Devil Fruits introduced during the Whole Cake Island Arc. It grants its user the power to create and manipulate seemingly infinite amounts of candy. It can trap opponents in hardened candy, strong enough to immobilize modified humans like the Vinsmokes. The user can also create durable and effective weapons and prosthetics from candy.

When the Straw Hats escaped from Whole Cake Island aboard the Thousand Sunny, Perospero used the Lick-Lick Fruit to create a candy sea slug, which Big Mom used as a means of transportation. The sea slug did not dissolve upon contact with water and maintained its structural integrity throughout its use. Thus, the user can realistically create a land bridge directly over water or create a small landmass in the middle of the sea, which they can manipulate at will.

7. The Magnetic Fruit Assembles Metal Constructions That Work in Water

First used in One Piece, season 11, episode 17, "Admiral Kizaru in Action! The Sabaody Archipelago in Chaos"

The Magnetic Fruit allowed Eustass Kid to become one of the most powerful members of the Worst Generation, as it grants the ability to create and control magnetic forces. The Devil Fruit’s Awakening allows him to magnetize another living being, meaning their target can be affected by various metallic objects. The Magnetic Fruit can attract and combine various metal pieces to form new constructions, including a powerful electric cannon.

A user of the Magnetic Fruit can assemble metal parts to create a submarine, then use the fruit’s power to hold it in place from the inside. Kid’s Punk Rotten technique creates a metallic golem that he pilots. Therefore, the Magnetic Fruit can theoretically assemble a giant robot capable of walking and fighting in water, controlled from the inside by the user.

6. The Mark-Mark Fruit Still Works Even if the User Is Underwater

First appearance in One Piece, season 15, episode 16, "A Coward and a Crybaby! The Mermaid Princess in the Hard Shell Tower"

The Mark-Mark Fruit is ideal for snipers, as it allows the user to fire homing projectiles at their target from anywhere at any time. The only catch is that the user must first physically touch their target with their hand. Once this condition is met, they can send any object toward the marked target, whether it’s an axe, a statue, or a Marine battleship.

Vander Decken IX is a pirate from Fish-Man Island who can use the Mark-Mark Fruit underwater due to a special anti-strike coating. Thanks to this, it was revealed that the power of the Mark-Mark Fruit still works, even if the user's projectiles are surrounded by seawater. The water does not alter the projectile's speed or prevent it from changing direction if the target moves.

5. The Hollow-Hollow Fruit Can Transform the User into a Ghost

First appearance in One Piece, season 10, episode 1, "Venture into the Sea of the Devil! The Mysterious Skeleton Floating in the Fog"

The Hollow-Hollow Fruit was introduced during the Thriller Bark Arc and grants its user the ability to summon ghosts. These ghosts can be used for surveillance, but they also have offensive applications. The ghosts of the Hollow-Hollow Fruit can pass through a person's body, filling them with such intense negative emotions that they collapse in despair. Some of these ghosts can even explode.

A user of the Hollow-Hollow Fruit can use astral projection to transform into a ghost. In this form, they are completely intangible, meaning they can pass through any surface. In their ghost form, the user can theoretically move through water without the risk of drowning. The user must leave their physical body to use astral projection; thus, their ghost form would disappear if their real body were thrown into the sea.

4. The Gigantic Fruit Allows the User to Walk in Water

First used in One Piece, season 21, episode 25, "Run, Koby! A Desperate Escape Strategy!"

The Gigantic-Gigantic Fruit is currently in the possession of the Blackbeard Pirates and has a simple but effective power. As its name suggests, it greatly enlarges the user's body, thus increasing their physical strength and resistance. A normal-sized human can become a giant, and a giant can become even larger than ancient giants like Oars.

Thanks to Sanjuan Wolf, One Piece fans know that this Devil Fruit works even if most of the user’s body is still submerged. It’s important to note that this only works if the user is a giant. A user of the Gigantic-Gigantic Fruit can stand and move in the ocean, but it is extremely exhausting. They cannot fight for long in the water, but they will not shrink or drown unless they fall into a deep underwater pit.

3. The Heat-Heat Fruit Overheats the Ocean by Direct Contact

First used in One Piece, season 19, episode 45, "A Secret Meeting! Luffy vs. the Fire Tank Pirates"

Despite having similar powers, the Heat-Heat Fruit should not be confused with the non-canon Hot-Heat Fruit, which generates large amounts of heat. The Heat-Heat Fruit allows its user to emit heat from their body and transfer it to other objects, such as swords. An enemy swordsman would be forced to drop their weapon. The user’s fiery punches can be violent, and they can ignite their target just by looking at them.

A user of the Heat-Heat Fruit can overheat the surrounding ocean by heating their arms and plunging them into the water. One might think they would lose all strength and fall into the ocean, but they can keep their arms submerged as long as they wish. This technique damages any living being underwater, and most surprisingly, the user can produce deadly underwater heat rays while their arms are submerged.

2. The Ice-Ice Fruit Freezes Water by Direct Contact

First used in One Piece, season 7, episode 30, "The Man of Pride! Foxy the Silver Fox"

The Ice-Ice Fruit was once one of the most powerful weapons of the World Government but is now in the possession of the Blackbeard Pirates. Its user has complete control over ice, but unlike most Logia users, they do not benefit from intangibility, as ice is a solid substance. In battle, the Ice-Ice Fruit can freeze opponents, and thawing them can take a long time. Even Yonko commanders with Haki cannot break free from this ice.

During the Long Ring Long Land Arc, Admiral Aokiji revealed that the Ice-Ice Fruit could counter the weakness of water by freezing its surface. Thus, its user can literally walk on water without losing their strength or power. When Whitebeard caused a tsunami during the War of the Best, the Ice-Ice Fruit saved Marineford by freezing the wave and all the surrounding water.

1. The Isle-Isle Fruit Works Even When in Constant Contact with Water

First used in One Piece, season 7, episode 30, "The Man of Pride! Foxy the Silver Fox"

The Isle-Isle Fruit is perhaps the most specific and absurd Devil Fruit in One Piece, as it transforms its user into a Human Island. A user of the Isle-Isle Fruit can merge with an island and manipulate its environment. They can control natural environments composed of rocks and trees, as well as artificial environments filled with buildings and other man-made elements.

When Vice-Admiral Garp saved Koby from the Pirate Island, Avalo Pizarro demonstrated that a user of the Isle-Isle Fruit could use an island to create giant limbs capable of easily crushing a Marine battleship. Islands are in constant physical contact with water, and certain parts are always submerged, yet this did not weaken Pizarro or hinder his abilities, meaning the Isle-Isle Fruit is inherently immune to the weakness caused by water.
