He was also a candidate for the position of Chief Admiral, but following his defeat by Admiral Akainu at Punk Hazard, who also coveted the post, he left the Navy.

After the ellipsis, he made a comeback at the end of the Punk Hazard arc by preventing Doflamingo from killing Smoker. Later, we learn that he has decided to join forces with Blackbeard's crew. His epithet means "the blue pheasant".
